As @baumanco was trying to say; Single person earth augers are not designed to continuously dig all the way to full depth without lifting them up (as they are spinning. not completely out of the hole.) Every few seconds, to help evacuate the dirt. You need to let it dig down about 12 inches or so; then as it is spinning, lift the whole thing up about 1/2 the depth of the hole; then lower it back down and let it dig for a few seconds; then lift it back up again to evacuate the dirt; and lower it back down again and keep repeating that cycle every few seconds until you get to full depth. Dirt is too thick and heavy. If they designed these single man augers with a speed high enough to evaluate dirt from full depth on its own without lifting it occasionally, it would spin so fast that it would injure us if it hit any obstructions, and the force of the spinning even in soft clean dirt would be so strong that it would rip the machine right out of the hands of most average people and make it unusable. Plus, with and electric (cordless or corded) auger, trying to force the machine to do all work evacuating the dirt from more than 12 to 18 inches without helping it by lifting occasionally, put an excessive amount of strain on the electric motor and drastically reduce it's lifespan.
Thanks for taking the time to be the First video reviewer of this Ridgid Earth Auger.
    Have a Great day!

As I said in the video, it doesn't spin as fast as a gas powered unit, so it doesn't have the speed to sling the dirt even when lifting it up and down. Buy one, and you'll see what I'm talking about. This isn't my first rodeo with augers. You gotta remember this is clay, so it's thick and heavy. I'm sure it would do better in different soil conditions. But here where I'm at, it just doesn't have the rpm's. Maybe with 2 max output batteries, it might help a little but as it is it does just ok in my opinion.

@@matthewmeltonTEAMMELTONFISHING Sir, I'm not sure why you are doubling down and getting defensive, instead of just taking the kind advice from two different people who were just trying to help you and make the tool last drastically longer for you, but you clearly never lifted up even one time while digging any of the holes on your video (accept for when you hit something), you just strained it all the way down until it wouldn't go any deeper, then reversed the bit back out leaving most of the dirt still in the holes. You are the first person that I have seen try to force it all the way to full depth without lifting the tool occasionally to evacuate the dirt. I have clay here too, and so do most of the people who have done reviews for other earth augers, that isn't something new or unique. And your clay in your video was significantly more dry, more crumbly, and less pasty and sticky than a lot of the other people who have done reviews for other electric and cordless augers that operate at about the same speed as this Ridgid auger. If you lift it occasionally while it is still spinning, instead of forcing it all the way down and then reversing it out, you will only have minimal loose dirt in the very bottom of the hole (maybe 6 inches), instead of 3/4 of the hole having loose dirt filling it and having to basically re-dig the holes again with a manual post hole digger. And, you will be able to go down deeper (as long as you don't hit rock), because you won't have the excessive weight and friction pressing and squeezing on the entire auger bit. Whether it is your first rodeo or not, we all have room for improvement, and having people who are willing to offer us free helpful advice from their experiences or research is always a blessing, but it is only helpful if we are humble enough to accept it and use it.

@@tonyb3426 Well said.👍🏼 I came here because I’m torn between the petrol and cordless auger. Your comment helps me make an informed decision. The petrol version might be torquey, but is certainly smokey too. I like the quietness and simplicity of the battery-operated version, but can’t help but wonder how many holes can one get on a single charge?🤔 I’ll be working in a remote site a few kilometres from electricity.

The machine doesn't need to "sling" the dirt out with high RPM's, you just have to manually bring the auger up and feather the dirt out while digging down. Looks like a great machine, thanks for the video.

You should do a second video showing which method is most effective; Forcing the bit through as deep as you can until it stops, and then reversing the bit back out. "vs" Lifting up occasionally about 1/2 to 2/3 of the current depth of the hole every few seconds, to as deep as it can go, and then lifting it out most of the way while it is still spinning and letting off the trigger just before the bit comes out of the hole. To help everyone see and learn from the side by side comparison which method would help them the most. ?Or even just to prove your point to everyone that it doesn't have enough speed to evacuate the dirt even when lifting it up occasionally?

?? If you stood behind it, you wouldn't hesitate to back it up with a factual comparison of your method vs a different method recommend by two of your viewers suggesting it is a better and more effective method that could save your other inexperienced viewers from burning up the electric motor in their auger if they copy your method more than a dozen or two dozen times. If your ego is so delicate that you get upset and defensive when others try to help you or make suggestions, why are you putting videos on a public platform where people with many different perspectives can see them?
P.S. I haven't gone out and bought one for myself and made a video because the Ridgid Earth Auger is still significantly overpriced and currently only comes in a kit with the 2 low-end batteries and a cheap charger (which I don't need because I have many MAX Output batteries and better chargers already) that drive up the price even higher, unnecessarily for my needs. You already have access to one, and obviously like making videos, so I made the suggestion to you, not thinking that it could be possible for a simple suggestion to do a comparison video of methods could hurt your feelings. If you are making videos desiring to help people, not just to get some attention for yourself, and you believe that the method that you used in your video is the most beneficial for your viewers to use, why wouldn't you want to show all of them the proof of that?
((Something that you might want to consider; You do realize that every person watching TH-cam can read all of your replies (not just the person that you are replying to), right? Will defensive or disrespectful replies from you to your viewers boost your reputation or tarnish it?))

@tonyb3426 I love RIDGID tools, and I personally have 80 tools registered on the RIDGID website for the LSA right now. With that being said, I am not such a RIDGID groupie that I'm going to make up some BS padded review for them. The earth auger again works great, but it needs a little more RPM to spin the dirt out of the hole like a gas-powered or tractor attachment auger and a little more torgue to reach the full depth in this hard clay, I clearly stated this in my video. As far as the raising up and down method for drilling a hole, I tried that while I used this auger while drilling out 8-2ft deep holes, and again, it doesn't spin fast enough to sling enough clay/sandy dirt out of the holes to clean them out. You will definitely need some post hole diggers. If you don't trust my review, that's fine. Go put your money where your mouth is and buy and test your own RIDGID earth auger. Until then, you can stop trolling anytime.

      @@matthewmeltonTEAMMELTONFISHING
I'm sorry, but the things that you stated as faults of the tool were 90% user error. Everyone who has experience with Earth Augers, or even just basic knowledge of electric tools, knows that it is extremely bad and damaging to the electric motors to strain them so hard that it forces them to stop moving. Even with the tractor mounted earth augers that are much more powerful and not susceptible to electric motor burn out, on nearly every video of them being used, they always lift the bit to nearly the top of the hole and back down repeatedly throughout the entire time boring the holes. And, they never reverse the bit back out of the hole (unless it hits an obstruction and gets bound up), which is just like unscrewing a screw, which, doing so, obviously can't evacuate any dirt. The bit cannot be lazily lifted just slightly and back down either, it has to be picked up almost out of the hole each time. And, even common sense, and the most basic knowledge of centrifugal force, would tell you that even if it was underpowered and had lower than ideal RPMs, any earth that wasn't soupy mud or very sticky clay that would need to be scraped off, would fall off of the part of the spinning bit that was lifted up out of the hole and didn't have the sides of the hole preventing it from falling off. No BS in reviews is necessary, just using common sense proper use of the tool, and having enough integrity and humility to admit that what we did could use some improvement. And, for the sake of your mother in law or whoever it was that you said actually owned the tool that you were reviewing, I hope you won't keep forcing the tool all the way down until it binds and stops, because it was not designed to work that way, and it will burn up the motor if you continue to misuse it that way. Some people have the ability to listen and learn lessons from other people's mistakes, but some people refuse to listen and insist on only learning their lessons the hard way from repeating the mistakes of others who cared enough to warn them. I have absolutely nothing to gain by proving you wrong on a TH-cam video where everyone could see it. I am not a cruel person. I was just trying to prevent you from destroying the tool, and hoping that you would have enough integrity to realize, acknowledge, and correct your mistake, and pass on the proper method to your viewers to prevent them from misusing their augers and causing them to fail prematurely. And, besides, everyone with experience, could already clearly see the mistake that you were making a minute or two into watching your review, as at least two of us have already informed you as a courtesy. And I'm sure that many other viewers will continue to question why you are misusing the auger, as long as you leave that video up of you misusing the auger. And, there are already many videos of other people using earth augers Properly on TH-cam, that put "their" money where my mouth is, so it would be pointless for me to waste money on a tool that is still significantly overpriced, just to show the proper method of using an earth auger that many other people have already been showing for years. It would only be useful for a person who was trying to tell people that lifting the auger up occasionally to evacuate drastically more dirt, the way that all other people reviewing and demonstrating earth augers have done it, doesn't work as good as forcing the bit in all the way to the bottom without lifting and reversing the bit back out, to make a video to prove that the way that nearly everyone else who uses an auger has been doing it, isn't as good as their way. Anyway.. At least, your other viewer and I cared enough to take our time to try to help you and your other viewers, even if we couldn't get through to you. At least your viewers can hear about the proper use of an earth auger from other people in the comments section of your video, or from the many other TH-camrs who took the time to learn the correct way to use an earth auger before they made their videos. Regardless of your defensive and stubborn replies to your viewers who took their time to politely inform you of your misuse of the tool that will destroy it if continued. I hope for the best for you. Have a good night.

Why are you not bringing the auger up and down repeatedly to clean the hole out as you go deeper. I've never used an auger that goes straight down and is clean. Even regular drill bits need to be moved up and down or have a vacuum to extract the dug out debris.

    • @matthewmeltonTEAMMELTONFISHING
      @matthewmeltonTEAMMELTONFISHING  ปีที่แล้ว

That's what I said in the video, it doesn't spin fast enough like a gas powered auger to clean the hole out, so you have to clean the hole out with post hole diggers. If RIDGID would increase the speed up I believe it would work better. Trust me I've tried to clean the hole out by raising it up and down because nobody likes using post hole diggers. Thanks for watching.

@@matthewmeltonTEAMMELTONFISHING OK. I didn't hear you say anything about raising it up and down repeatedly, which is why I made the comment. I only heard that it didn't spin fast enough to evacuate the dirt. I typically go about 8-12 inches down, then work the auger up and down to let the dirt that rode up the auger bit to be pushed out of the hole. Rinse and repeat several times until all of the dirt is no longer in the hole and it's up and outside of it. Speed helps but usually isn't required. In any case, thanks for the thorough review of everything on it.

I used one of these this last weekend and it took one hole for me to figure out how to use one efficiently. I mean, where is the common sense? You cannot just drill to the max depth without pulling it out a few times to clean some dirt out of the hole and have a perfect hole. I would swear that these reviewers are intentionally trying to make these battery earth augers look bad. Are they a skid steer hydraulic auger? No, they are not. So stop trying to make out like they are going to function like one.

If you read all of the comments fully, Neither me or the other person who told him he was misusing the tool said anything whatever endorsing Ridgid tools, we didn't even defend the tool even slightly, so him calling us Ridgid fanboys is obvious deceitful nonsense. We were only commenting about him misusing the tool, because he didn't care enough to research how to properly use the tool before he posted a video saying things that he was doing improperly were faults of the tool. And, because if anyone follows his bad example of misusing the tool, it will destroy their high priced tool. Nobody was giving him hell about the way he used the tool, only politely informing him that the tool is not designed to work that way. The issue was only pushed farther because of his defensive and childish responses and him saying it wasn't his first rodeo with earth augers, when he clearly did not know how single person earth augers are designed to work, and his insisting on trying to blame the tool for him trying to force it to do something that it was never designed to do. Instead of being humble enough to just say, Thanks for the advice, I will try it that way next time. Besides the obvious fact that, If anyone couldn't see how inexperienced and awkward he was in trying to get the first hole started with his feet so far away that he was off balanced and nearly fell over when he squeezed the trigger (which any person with experience would know you should never do), and only after a few tries, he finally stepped close enough to be able to brace himself and get some leverage, they would have to be blind. Plus, the way he was using the machine is dangerous and could get someone hurt, especially for a smaller weaker person. This is a large tool that has the potential to cause serious or permanent injuries to a person if misused, and it is irresponsible to post a video for a tool that size without first doing sufficient research of how to properly use the tool, and displaying the misuse of the tool without acknowledging that it is improper and dangerous to use the tool in that manner. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, if he didn't know that he was misusing the tool when he posted the video, then it wasn't deliberately misinforming or endangering others. Now that he has been informed of the proper use of the tool and the dangers of the way he used it in his video; leaving that video up, and not correcting his mistake, would be negligent and dangerously irresponsible. ... A much bigger issue than just about "how he used the auger"... At least for anyone who cares about the wellbeing of others.
