- Have had alot of spike slammers lately over railroad spike knives so I thought I'd try something different with a spike. I have always wanted to try a forged rose but I wanted to do it completely from the forge, one piece and no torch. Honestly, I am not going to win any prizes with this one but it's my first and I think a great project for newbies like me to give a try! Try It!

I really liked this video. Not only did you show a technique for making a one-piece rose, but also the process behind getting the first one "figured out". So often you'll see blacksmiths working pieces that are a style or form they are very familiar with (nothing wrong with that of course - I love those videos too!) But, I've seen far fewer where someone records their first attempt at something (outside of a spike knife, s-hook, etc.) It gives aspiring blacksmiths a more realistic expectation of what a "first" will look like, even with a year or so of smithing experience; it looks a little rough, there are things you would do differently, but it is still instantly recognizable as a rose, and something worthy of display.

Great video man, keep it up! I love seeing the entire process, from the change in ideas at the beginning on how you're going to divide the spike up to how you make changes along the way. Your video, unlike so many others, includes the necessity in adapting as you go along. I look forward to watching more.

I've got to say, that is the best upsetting of a small piece I've ever seen done without a jig. Impressive.

Hi, my name is sam smith, I have been forging for about 4 years, I am far from the best, but I think the rose came out great, the only thing is work it while its hot, the metal wants to move easier and it well keep it from breaking or fracturing, I love how you made it out of the rail road spike it gives it a great look, also for texturing use a stump instead of the anvil, so the texture want be lost as you roll it around, I love it and keep on forging.

This is amazing, ive started basic blacksmithing (knives and stuff) and this would probably be a goal to set for to make eventually
ChickenPlaysHD cutting the spike was the only part that was hard... the rest was more frustrating than difficult... give it a try!
I usually do the rolled rose myself. Bang em out in 20 minutes at key ring size. Touch the ends of the petals with a brass brush at a black heat (600-700 degrees F), then clear coat them at about 200degrees F. Gives a nice gold look.
It's a great touch for leaves and such as we'll :)

came out pretty good.. thats alooooot of work, might be cool to get some pin striping paint, oneshot... and paint the pedals red and the stem green but fade the green so the spikes still there and the metal fades up too the green.. and maybe weld some thorns on the stem too. def cool rose and nice video dude.

(Sorry if this is already mentioned here and I missed it): I believe the inspiration for this was from Helmut Hillenkamp's "irontolivewith" channel, in a video titled "Forging Roses (HD)".
That is really cool
All sorts one can do with a spike. The head can be hammered into a leaf, flatten it and the cheeks of a "skull" form. I use the spike end alot to make scroll pendants, or taper out to use as nails. All sorts besides "knives". I'm gonna try this. 🍻

Nice job with your videos. Next time I fire up the forge, I am going to try this too. Have you tried fullering a little ways back from the base of your petals, then using a saw or hot cut to make a third layer of petals? (Cutting up from the stem towards the petal, then bending it up) Might give that depth that you are trying for on the finished product.
Great job for your first one-piece rose, but like that other guy said, "Put some heat on it" for the upsetting and for the petal forming/bending. Further, you know that 'pointy-thing-on-the-anvil'? You could try forming petals on it, also putting in a curve, instead of pliers, and more importantly, to do the curling of the stem like blacksmiths often do scrolls. Much cleaner curves. But, again pretty good for a first rose.

great job! looks great......how do you prepare for finishing the piece? fire scale removal, use a pickle, soak in acid, wire brush, how do you clean the inside of the rose before finishing so it does not rust.......

Chandler do you thank that it might have split some of the lower spike wedge it in from the center but leave enough stock to hold the rose and make it a 12 peddle rose?

besides rail road spikes, what other parts from railways are your favourite to work with? i have been "borrowing" quite a bit of metal from the track right by me haha, but what do you like to work with? I'm new at blacksmithing.

He's got an actual shop set up now, so he spends all day most days hammering instead of filming and posting. If you want a piece, you can luck out and find it on his etsy or ebay, but your best bet for something specific is to dig through some of the comments on other videos and you can find his ordering email.

I see a bag of anthracite on the ground, is that all you use or do you mix it with bituminous?
Quick trick. Mark the places where you want to saw while the iron is cold. Then heat it up to orange. At this heat the hack saw will go through the iron like it was warm butter.
I've cut Nicholson files (pretty tough material) this way and it doesn't seem to hurt the saw blade. Note, keep the saw moving.
Dick Bromberg I thought about that but thought the heat would weaken the saw blade... will give it a go on the next one!

hey man I have only started blacksmithing a little while ago I have made a couple knives and some rings and the biggest problem is that I cant seem to get a good coal fire going I was wondering if you use a coal or propane forge and how you get the coal forge to light and stay lit reliably I haven't looked at all your videos yet to see if you made one on that yet but could you make one maybe? thanks

Blacksmithman5 I use coal... i light the coal by first starting with a couple handfuls of charcoal, get that going and then add the coal... You need to have air to keep the coal going... a fan or blower, hairdryer works..
Chandler Dickinson Off the anvil is just a weighted box. I hang it on the beak to help dampen the ringing and sound of the anvil. I call it my neighbor pacifier lol
Blacksmithman5 it silences the ring on the anvil to make it alot quieter.

+Hicks Unlimited I do not... I can make another but I don't do it as one piece anymore as it just takes too long to be affordable. I forge the spike as I do in the video and make the rose from sheet stock... I looks much the same but much better and doesn't take as long. Should I wear ear plugs while I blacksmith?
Depends on the work and the environment. With machines certainly yes, when you´re in an enclosed room and you got all that anvil ring etc. also yes. If your anvil is half way deatened properly and you´re outside it might not be too harmful to the ears if you don´t wear protection. I personally always do but in the end of the day it´s your personal choice to make.
BobbyNiggs Thanks Daniel! Like he said it depends on the anvil and location... I have heard anvils ring so loud that it just hurt. But a quieted or deadened anvil I don't think you will need ear plugs... I use ear protection when grinding tho... If it hurts or annoys your ears...protect them!

Rock Zone I use 4, 3 and 2 pound hammers mostly... the petal work was mostly done with the 2 pounder the rest with the 3 or 4...
