  • Hello everyone and welcome to the forge! In today's episode, I forge a one-piece rolled rose (also known as a Russian rose). For this project, I used a piece of 2-inch mild steel flat bar 1/8 of an inch thick. I hope you enjoy this video and it makes you want to go out and give it a try. I appreciate you watching.

    Excellent beginner project! I’m going to use it, friend of my wife who is very interested wants to come and play in my forge. I am by no means a blacksmith or teacher but this is a great start that even I could teach someone to do. Here’s hoping , should be easy enough and something she will enjoy doing!

    Thanks this method has worked out better for me than all the other ones I have tried. and I like making these. I've made about 20 of them now. Just wondering what is a good price point for these? Internet references are all over the place. From a hundred and twenty bucks with a few leaves on it to 25 bucks. My first few I sold for 35. Sounded kinda fair. but I am getting better and faster at making them and don't want to under cut or devalue the design for other blacksmiths. So any hints will be much appreciated by everyone. Though I don't really expect a answer from this cause the video is sorta old but it would be nice. Also curious if it would work better and faster If you just forged the petals out and forged the stem separately and tacked them together at the end.

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am glad it helped out, I sell these for 35 dollars, a lot of the pricing depends on the area you live, I live in a more poverty striken area so most people can afford that but in an area where there is more money you can get more for them. I would give the seperate method a try and see which one you prefer. I appreciate you watching!

    How long of a piece of stock would you recommend start with, and how wide are the starting petals when i make my cuts?

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      16-18 inches should be more than enough for the whole piece but you can go longer if you want more petals , I usually do around 2 inches per petal, it makes it easier to get a tight roll for the center of the rose.Thanks for watching I appreciate it!

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for watching I appreciate it! I believe the petals were cut every 2 inches so if you do 8 petals it would end up being 16 inches just for them, if you pre cut the stem I would add another 6 inches or so for that, so 22-24 inches overall should do it, anymore than 8 petals just add 2 inches for each one to the overall length.

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I appreciate you watching, I use a wire brush on the outside, then a soak in acetone to remove the oil and crud, then rinse with water. Then a wax finish or spray paint once they dry, you can use an oven to dry them quickly before painting/waxing.

    I’m curious how you’d manage this if you had a smaller forge, mine isn’t quite as big as yours and I’m not sure how to fit the rose in there with how the stem and petals are, it’s too wide, I guess I could bend it but I’m not sure how that would mess with anything. Guess I’ll have to work on it a bit more, Great video though!

      Thanks! I appreciate you watching, normally I allot 6 inches for the stem cut around 3/8 of an inch wide, then I allot an in to an inch and a half per petal. I like around d 8 petals so you would need stock that is 14-16 inches overall. My preferred stock thickness to work with is 1/8 of an inch thick.

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe the petals were 2 inches wide and the stem was 6 inches for an overall length of 22 inches for the bar, give or take a little on the stem because you will be drawing it out when you forge it round, you may want to allot a little less. I appreciate you watching!
