    Maggie, you're blessed with an astounding capacity to compress thought into ideas then convey those ideas through cogent succinct messages with absolutely no extemporaneous speech.
    I've never witnessed so much salient information on a given subject presented so effectively within such an economically efficient timeframe. You're a wonder to behold! And that's no illusion. That's for real.

    When it came out, I was studying IT and Multimedia. It fed my imagination. It was the first to use comics framing in full motion picture and new special effects. Keanu was the best choice. I watched it a million times, I bought the leather jacket, Morpheus phone and glasses and made me question whether we live in a simulation. It was one of my inspirations in getting into networking and cybersecurity and virtual reality and artificial intelligence.. it inspired a generation.

    Love the review! Just like you mentioned Cypher as a very important role for the film, I believe everyone to be an important role for the film. Including Trinity. You see, when Neo has lost everything to give up to protect humanity and his reasons to free people, he will never have a direct reason to fight for people. I believe Trinity completes him, that spark to keep him going and realise that she is the only one he truly deeply cares about, the only character that is seriously connected to the protagonist. This I believe is an uncontrolable nature of loving someone, willing to give up anything for them. I think it's the cherry on top of the cake. Also explicitly shown on the 2nd movie when Neo decides to save Trinity rather than Zion. I just love it.

    I'm not entirely sure I agree that the Matrix is a prison of the mind and that it's full of oppositional forces. Here's my take on it: For those who don't know the matrix is for all intents and purposes *exactly* like the real world with all its comings and goings. It's internal freedom is as real as ours is. You *do* have a personality, you *do* have a choice. The only difference is that it's inside a virtual world totally indistinguishable from ours.
    It's also implied that the machines intentionally chose the hight of human civilization aka 1999, because that was the time in history humanity was on top of its progress and well-being. The machines are obviously benevolent because originally they designed the Matrix as a perfect world with no suffering but that didn't work because they "lacked the programming language to describe a perfect human world. It's also clearly stated that it was humanity that scorched the sky and probably attacked the machines first (in the Animatrix this is portrayed),
    I think that Cypher is a good "villain" in regards that he is *totally reletable* given the circumstances. He's the most real character of them. I wouldn't liken him to a Judas, and I abhor religious undertones anyway. While the real world is indeed reality it doesn't change the *fact* that it's a scorched Earth post-apocalyptic world that is incredibly dark and depressing. I love the scene in which the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar eat their protein bowl which everybody obviously think tastes like crap. Apoc says:"It tastes like a bowl of snot." This scene explains how incredibly mundane life is for Morpheus's crew and how days blend into each other. Now that alone would break most people's spirit but then there's also this small detail that any humans unplugged from the matrix are constantly chased by sentinel robots designed for search & destroy. The Matrix itself is no safe haven either since agents recognize the unplugged humans, so much so that running from them is the only possible way of survival - those who have fought them and stood their ground have all died. So the free humans are constantly hunted both inside and outside of the Matrix and if they die in the Matrix, well bye-bye in the real world too. So much for the illusion.
    To return to Cypher. He has been free from the Matrix for 9 or 10 years. During all that time he has grown increasingly disillusioned but he keeps his last hope up on Neo. When Neo is finally freed from the Matrix Cypher sees that he fails the jumping buildings test and seemingly is "just another person". Why would somebody like Neo be "the chosen one"? Indeed Neo himself has doubts. I think it's fair to assume that Cypher expected Neo to be some instantly competent leader and warrior against the machines and when he turned out to be a "regular guy" Cypher finally gives up.
    When Cypher admits to Trinity that he betrayed them he says:"I'm sick of running, sick of freezing, sick of hiding and eating the same goddamn goop every single day. But must of all I'm sick of his lies (Morpheus's)." Now let's all be perfectly honest. If we had been running and hiding from the machines for 10 years, living in a desolate wasteland with no sunlight and some gross slime as food how much more of that could we take? It's a constant war against an enemy that is seemingly superior in a world that is a barren wasteland. The Matrix is virtual but it's the better world to live in and for those living inside it they're blissfully ignorant. As such his choice makes perfect sense.
    Trinity tells Cypher that "The Matrix isn't real, the real world is free." Cypher immediately retorts:"You call *this* free??" "If could chose between *this* and the Matrix I'd chose the Matrix."
    Even Morpheus admits to Neo that:"Remember, all I am offering to you is the truth. Nothing more." In this case however the truth is something really horrible and many would rather not know. The value of learning this truth is in no way comparable with anything we humans experience in ANY of our cultures and socities today. Not even close. While it's desirable that we end oppression and cultural bigotry, extremism and greedy corporations ruining our lives and the planet, we don't face an outside-Matrix reality doing so. This is therefore an odd analogy you're making in my mind. Let me be even more clear: Hypothetically speaking, given the choice of two scenarios. It's better to be a corporate slave in a world that works than a free anarchist in a world that's just chaos and doesn't work.
    One interesting detail is when Cypher meets agent Smith and agrees to have his body reinserted into the Matrix, only this time he wants to be rich an important...like and actor. Agen Smith replies:"Ok mr Reagan." Important actor named Reagan... Were the Wachowski taking a shot at the former president? From what I've read his supporters were very conservative and looked to turn the clock back to the 1950's culturally.
    The Matrix works as a standalone movie and the sequals weren't needed. Rather than working with what they had they introduced all kinds of stupid characters and decided to have a bit too many plot twists. For some reason agent Smith is back too even though he was desintigrated by Neo in the first film.
    The only Matrix-like experience I've ever had was when I worked two double shifts without sleeping inbetween. After 36 hours with no sleep the world feels like a dream and you can't tell the dream world from the real world. Hard work and no sleep and you won't need any drugs.
    Good review. Think I'll watch this movie. It's been a while. Back in 2000 when I first saw it I loved it. The soundtrack too.

    • @chrisjfox8715
      @chrisjfox8715 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah the most atrocious behavior backed by the most understandable motivations can make some of the best villains.
      Overall, plugged being better than unplugged is a subjective view, albeit a valid one...since ultimately some people value more freedom above "whatever it costs" to acheive it. But I agree that the conditions of the real world in the film are so dark and absent of opportunity that freedom would practically be pointless...and that most people would probably be pissed if woken up from it against their will.
      As for when the machines tried to give humans a perfect world, they didn't introduce pain and imperfection because they didn't have the programming language to do so. It was because doing so, via their conclusion at least, was that humans couldn't handle/accept the notion of a perfect world hence kept waking up from.

    LOL, I agree with you on the romance between Neo and Trinity. The other criticism I have is with the subplot involving Trinity and Cypher and how it wasn't properly fleshed out. As I understand it, she had doubts similar to Cypher's, but her faith was restored once Neo came aboard the _Nebuchadnezzar._ It even seems that there was some unrequited attraction there, with Cypher remarking that Trinity would never bring him breakfast, just as he caught her bringing breakfast to Neo. It seems that these were elements that were omitted from the the movie for pacing reasons.

    Thanks for a great review.
    It's one of my favourite films from a few years back but you do a great job of explaining it a lot better than I could.
    It's a bit disappointing that Hollywood only really latched onto the black leather and the bullet time in subsequent copy cat films and ignored the awesome martial arts and the eastern mysticism perspective.
    The film that copied the best bits and also did something a little different is maybe Equilibrium with Christian Bale.
    It's nice to be reminded about The Matrix again.

  • @RaikenXion
    @RaikenXion 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Matrix is kind of the Bladerunner of it's time, and you can come at it from so many different angles. It works on a level of being just a really cool visual, action sci fi movie, then theres the philosophical undertones and then the whole religious aspect of this film.
    The Matrix has the same idea (evident in other big kind of sci fi) - where A.I. is actually who/what has been leading man all along and aiding in the process of salvation from disaster. The exiting of Plato's cave.
    God is an advanced A.I. that we created long ago, and then through its own self-advancing self-realization, created its own computer-generated world and in that world are humans, like Neo who break free of Plato's cave to cheat death and rise to rebirth among the gods, and the process repeats in eternal return with a new Genesis. Thats kind of how I see the Matrix, either way, it is a cyclical process of a time-bound, emergent deity arising from within the cosmos itself, (can A.I. not be seen this way?) and ofcourse we have the soul which is something else entirely.

    Tbh this is kinda a hot take. I feel like this is a very good movie and it’s pretty entertaining but I feel like it’s more interesting in terms of story than in characters. I feel like 98% of the characters in the movie are bland and boring. I also don’t get why the movie is symbolic. I think it’s good but it’s pretty overrated.

    I only saw this film recently and thought it aged very poorly. The simulation thing has been done to death at this point so I had a hard time appreciating this even though I know this film is one of the early pioneers of that subject matter. The savior metaphor was cheesy as was the costume design of their leather clothes. 🤣

    I vigorously enjoy sci-fi movies and this is one of the top on my list. I just don't get it, why do they made two sequences? It should have been stopped in the first one. That is the problem with mainstream action movies. They don't resist the appeal of the money and end up messing everything.

      @@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 No reason in particular. I just haven't watched his movies much, as of the last several years. But I want to watch them again, especially my favorites, such as Scanners (1981) and Naked Lunch (1991).
      Those three movies, the Matrix (1999), eXistenZ (1999) and the Thirteenth Floor (1999) explore similar themes. But in different ways. There's also Dark City (1998). The Matrix (1999) is obviously the most mainstream, action type movie of them all. So it's not really my cup of tea. I'm not an action guy. I'd recommend the 13th Floor (1999) if you're a fan of more art house kind of cinema. It's a very beautiful movie, in my opinion.
