  • If you want to reconstruct a face, but you don’t have enough photos for photogrammetry, you can use this tool. It only needs 2 or 3 photos and does most of the work automatically, with only a little bit of manual finetuning needed. It’s a paid addon but the demo version works for 15 days so you can get quite a bit of work done for free. Get it here: keentools.io/download/facebui...

    Say I made my own head mesh already. It has shape keys and rigs. I don't want to use the one that comes with FaceBuilder addon. Is there a way around where I swap my model head for there's and just tweak my own head mesh and use Facebuilder as normal? If possible that be amazing bc my own head mesh and body topology would already be the same.

      Yes, it's solved! Apparently TH-cam was listing my videos as "shorts" (their Tik Tok format) and you don't get notified of those. It's really aggravating, and I only found out because some other people told me about it (I can't see on my end if something is a "short" or a normal video). Thanks, TH-cam! But anyway, I make them all a bit longer than a minute now and they'll be considered "normal" videos so everybody should get a notification.

    I always love your videos but this one is kinda off for me. It would've been a nice addon but the pricing is really weird for a free software. For that price you can get Reallusion's CC3.

    • @BlenderSecrets
      @BlenderSecrets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be honest I just used it because I needed to have a digital double for a short film, so a couple of hours of use was more than enough. I like that it was so easy to learn to use and that it helped me finish the task. The price for the continued use didn’t really seem that important to me, as I suspect most people will just use it when they need to create one head, and the trial is more than enough. But, if you’re doing this kind of work on a regular basis I think it will pay for itself. I don’t know Reallusion though.

    • @powertomato

      Having played with it for an hour, and being a computer engineer here is my guess on how this works:
      1. There is a generic face model
      2. There is a face recognition algorithm. There are many ways to do this, (here is a good computerphile video about one method th-cam.com/video/uEJ71VlUmMQ/w-d-xo.html)
      3. The result of a face recognition algorithm are several key-points (like eye position, nose position ect., they call them pins in the plugin), and in this case an estimated camera position
      Each of the face models vertices is assigned to one or several key points by weights, (similarly how vertices are assigned to bones in skeletal animation)
      4. You use the key-points and the camera position to calculate 3d-coordinates of each key-point for each of the photos
      5. When all is done you perform an optimization with e.g. a least square optimizer to give you the final 3d-coordinates for the key-points
      6. You deform the generic face model according to the weights assigned to each of the key-points
      As for the texture generation:
      Now you have the final geometry and orientation of the face and camera position for each of the photos and you have a UV-Mapping for the generic face model created in before.
      1. For each of the pictures, project the visible geometry onto the photo
      2. After projection you bake into a new image using the UV-Mapping
      3. You blend the different pictures into one single texture. You may evaluate the quality of each visible polygon by calculating to what degree it is facing the camera or other criteria. Best quality results in that picture having most impact during blending.

    To be honest, I am not sure this addon has production value. For character modelling and texturing, you probably have different base mesh with different topology meaning after you use this addon, you still have to do retopo and texture projection. Also, you need a full body not only a head to work with. You can't have only a head in your scene...

    • @BlenderSecrets
      @BlenderSecrets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I see what you mean but you can often definitely get away with a separate head model that is not attached to a body. But yes, it would be nice if that was an option for sure!

    This gave me terrible results for a 3D print. The person I tried this with had a very pronounced chin and a very specific nose-form. Nothing showed up in the geometry. So I guess this is just a generic model that is transformed a bit by the photos. Quick results and for generic looking people in quick shots gives really quick results, but nothing that would withstand close inspection.
