Wait, they suspected Johnny Boy cos he drew people riding rockets into "High School"? Lol. A kid in my grade 9 science class drew a gun made out of tiny guns and it shot bullets that were also guns, accented with "drips" of red Sharpie. He never rode a rocket into the school, though. I guess he was just an edgy teen boy. SHOCK, I know. Hah.
Oh, and he drew another one that shot knives. That would be kinda cool like in a video game. P.S. The kid was harmless, & the drawings were just silly scribbles. He was just an edgy adolescent, but he had _some_ self-awareness and was leaning into it a bit. This is a lighthearted thing. Cos I don't want to get into how few degrees of separation from this stuff I really am. (One. Several friends I've had, actually, in different situations.)

My Christian high school made us watch this in like 2014 and I forgot 99% of it until now.😪 I only remembered 1) the death scene and 2) experiencing second hand embarrassment during all the other scenes
The most accurate thing about this movie is that (if I remember correctly) the stoner kid who framed Johnny Boy was the pastor's son (not the youth pastor who was in the movie, but like the senior pastor, I think it was a throw away line).
I watched this movie in my HS youth group class when it came out. None of us girls thought Steven was attractive and we didn't understand why they framed him as the "hot bad boy." 🤣
Director: "So, you are an obnoxious, self centered bully, that is an asshole to everyone else, with light homoerotic overtones." Steven Crowder: "Okay, but what is my character in the film?"
I actually had to watch this movie in high school during my freshman year health class as part of the mental health unit and yes my high school was public.
Hooooly shit, I totally remember seeing this movie at my youth group as a teenager when it came out. This brought back some Justice For Johnny Boy memories

I went to see that movie in theaterswith my church youth group. When you said the name of it I felt like I had flashbacks to 2009. I remember the pastor warning us that the movie had "serious themes" like sex and suicide. But apparently they're important for us to see, according to pastor Paul.
There was a movie named "The Christian Movie" in my local Dollar General, and honestly I wanted to get it out of curiosity. I resisted cause it would only encourage them, however it left an impression.
Once for work I had to film BTS video for a red carpet premiere. It was a small local movie that was going straight to PureFlix. They had super gross speeches beforehand about what our children should and shouldn't see in media. I was told I could stay for the screening but my queer ass got the hell out of there.
I absolutely had to watch this as a part of bible youth group and to this day I remember how obvious and gauche everything was - Jonny Boy’s clothes matched whether he was depressed (black) or happy (yellow). Thanks for unlocking this memory.
I wonder if this is where Crowder had his bisexual experience he talked about having 🤔 I mean, my first same sex experience happened within the church too sooo...

@JayKay Hey, just wanted to let you know that what you wrote is definitely a form of coercive conversion. I know you only made that comment because you thought you were being helpful, but it really wasn't helpful. People fall out of faith for more reasons than hard times, and telling someone that an apocalypse is coming won't reverse that decision or make them think twice.
@JayKay man I really hope you grow out of this shit
@@JayKay-sx1mv If someone wants to become christian (Why would you want to do that) they will do it when they want to! You spamming people online is not going to help. Don't know why I bother with you people. Stuck in your ways. You can find peace and enlightenment without following a stupid book. Check out Buddhism
Oh my god. My (former) church youth group made it an event to watch this damn movie. They played it on the side of the church building.
BRO SAME HOLY FUCK this video unlocked a repressed memory
I'm glad my Church was actually fun, they didn't have much so we didn't watch movies.
@@kappadarwin9476 An old youth group pastor once took us all to see "My Super Ex Girlfriend" in theatres when I was like 12. It was one of the weirdest viewing experiences of my childhood and I still can't figure out why the youth group went to see THAT movie. Maybe that's one of the reasons he got "let go."
@@milessolomon4864 Yeah, he wasn't suppose to do that. I can't believe the theater staff let a bunch of kids into the theater of that movie. I guess it shows how much freedom youth pastors can have with kids. I find that scary.
@@kappadarwin9476 I remember being really worried they would ID me and I was so nervous about the movie, bc at that point, my parents were so restrictive, they wouldn't let me see Spider-Man (Tobey McGuire). But they trusted the church so much, they let me see My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Now that I've seen both movies, I can confidently say Spider-Man was more appropriate.
Nothing was more surreal to me than seeing my siblings old childhood friend have a Christian movie be made about her family 😫
SPILL, I gotta know which one

What?
???????!?! i need the tea
Had to comment again cause two random facts about this movie the 35 year old guy Jake plays beer pong against is actually who Jake is kinda based on. And at the very end of the movie when Jake and his dad are driving to college when they drive off from the coffee cup place they are heading east And then the final shot from the hill top and then heading under the bridge is them heading in a completely different direction than they were heading. I’ve always found that funny.
"if you sneezed during this video bless you" activated an ancient part of my brain like i was a sleeper agent
So nice of Ethan to spotlight his late son John Boy’s (Johnny Boy back then) acting career.
Rest in piece John Boy (1983/1993-2023)
rip to the goat, you'll be missed John Boy 😭😭😭
when i was in a christian school, i went from the nuns fav student to being atheist and gay-
I'm sorry to hear that they mistreated you. I'm Christian but I believe that God made us the way we are for a reason, that love is love, and that He comes to people in the way that you best receive Him-- whether that's through religion or music or whatever moves you. I wish you all the best and hope things are better now
Same. Really gave Catholicism a good go before finally finding happiness in being a queer witch.

Sorry if they have hurt you in anyway. Prayers you'll be able to find your way to God and his love.

He was my son."
Bruh 😂 I bet I've talked in my sleep and been more convincing and natural than that.
My health teacher made us watch this movie in his class. It was presented as factual and we had to take a test on the "information" in the movie. btw we were freshman at the time.
was this a catholic school or literally just a regular high school?? either way presenting this as factual is hilariously stupid
hope you're doing well today and not entirely traumatized by this movie lolol
Mmmm brainwashing
huh? was there even any "information" in this movie besides "girl is pregnant and she wanted to get an abortion, but that's bad because Jesus said so"?
@@krissprout it was a public school and I’m doing alright. This movie is one of my favorites out of the sheer stupidity of it. One of the characters he didn’t mention has his entire character based around loving peoples moms. Plus the classroom setting added to the whole absurdity of it all
@@joshc5613 yeah this movie was presented to us as a guide to our moral compass. I’m not denying that it’s hogwash at all it was just talked about like a documentary to us while in class
3:35 You know this was made by 70 year old ⚪️ men because their genuine attempt at portraying high school is literally the Steve Buscemi meme
It’s so not cool it almost becomes cool
"how do ya do fellow su1c1d@l youths life is pain amarite?"
ethan this hair looks so good on you!! not necessarily bc it’s short but bc the volume on top rly shapes ur face well
someone should show up to one of his "change my mind" sessions and just play this movie on a projector or something
if you do that you'll be my hero.
My church showed us this movie a day after a kid in our youth group committed suicide and thought they were doing something lmao. I remember crying and being so confused bc we were all impressionable tweens
You can lead a tax-dodging evangelist to a movie-grade camera and budget, but you can't force them to be good
Also, new hair looks great!
with the pureflix movie by nick and now ethan I’m awaiting the fateful day a commentary person covers the movie my dad was in for pureflix……….
Fun fact: I was in attendance of the very first showing of this movie. My church at the time rented out a whole theatre for our youth group to watch it.
It wasn't good even to me as a Christian at the time.
It was hell to watch a review now, 14 years later as an atheist.
But I've been so excited for someone to review this one. Thank you, Ethan.
i wish ethan hadn’t edited out the part where steven’s character tells jake to scream at his pregnant girlfriend to put her in her place
This movie was a thing a decade ago when we had some suicides in my school and I never actually watched it, but wow it really has very little to say about... about saving a life lmao
OKAY, HEAR ME OUT
The moment with two sandwiches is JESUS WITH TWO LOAFS OF BREAD
15:34 And THAT is a reference to Job's wife! Because she too isn't named!
Damn I like this movie already.
IM SO GLAD I WASNT THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT OF THE LOAVES AND FISHES STORY
I actually did sneeze and there was no one around to say bless you. Thank god you did or the demons may have taken my souls. Truly doing the lords work, keep at it brother Ethan
i just realized this movie is the movie that i was forced to watch during a youth group meeting when i was in like middle school… i didn’t rmbr until the scene abt rodger bc i have a distinct memory of watching that scene in full with no warning or anything and being traumatized for awhile after seeing that as a kid 😭😭 oh my god i can’t believe u found it i’ve been wondering what it was for years omg
I 100% was shown this movie in my youth group as I child, it was sold to us as an important thoughtful movie we all needed to see. Occasionally I would remember scenes or weird parts from this movie and I would wonder what it was from.
This video brought everything back to me, thank you for that.
I hope Ethan keeps making yt videos for us when we're all in hell
Great video Ethan, even though it gave me flashbacks to my Christian upbringing 😅 love the new haircut btw!
Omfg I was forced to watch this at a church sleepover thing when I was kid!! You have unearthed a memory I do not want, Ethan…
Lookin' good with the new 'do, Ethan! New video & new hair = W
(I'm trying to be hip, as a 25-year-old, I don't know if it's working.)
Thanks Ethan! I always enjoy your content!
Bit of advice, don't make an equation, just say w with no further context
@@josephspurgis7782 Thank you for the advice! I will implement it next time I feel the need to express that something is a "W". 👍🏼
W 25 year old!! 😄 Absolute chad 💯
AT THE END OF THE MOVIE I JUST SCREAMED "WHAT WAS THE POINT???"
the tobuscus outro was like a punch directly in the face, love u ethan!
Love how you haven't changed your hair at all, and that your hair has and will always be the same
I love that bible story when the security guard feeds the five thousand with only two tuna subs.
I want to be a director and whenever I feel self-conscious that none of my shit will be good, I remember stuff like this exists and I feel better about whatever I make
I like how ethans nose ring matches his glasses
My Christian high school made us watch this in like 2014 and I forgot 99% of it until now.😪 I only remembered 1) the death scene and 2) experiencing second hand embarrassment during all the other scenes
Great video, Ethan. I found it to be a supremely enjoyable experience, so thank you very much!

The most accurate thing about this movie is that (if I remember correctly) the stoner kid who framed Johnny Boy was the pastor's son (not the youth pastor who was in the movie, but like the senior pastor, I think it was a throw away line).
Obsessed with the new hair eef
I watched this movie in my HS youth group class when it came out. None of us girls thought Steven was attractive and we didn't understand why they framed him as the "hot bad boy." 🤣
Director: "So, you are an obnoxious, self centered bully, that is an asshole to everyone else, with light homoerotic overtones."
Steven Crowder: "Okay, but what is my character in the film?"
I actually had to watch this movie in high school during my freshman year health class as part of the mental health unit and yes my high school was public.
Oh my God, my 8th grade health teacher showed this movie in class when we did a unit on bullying!!
SAME except mine was 10th grade I think
Your spagetti'd little laughs are my favorite in this.
Ethan’s new hair looks so dapper
Hooooly shit, I totally remember seeing this movie at my youth group as a teenager when it came out. This brought back some Justice For Johnny Boy memories
hey your haircut looks super nice! also love the new backdrop
Unrelated, love the new hair, man. The colors great, you pull off the short look, A+
wow ethan this new haircut looks really great on you!
Looks fresh tbh
You can tell by the title that they really wanted The Fray to do the theme.
the fray: we can't make you change the name sadly, but we will not let you sully our song with it!
oh my god…. okay i’m a pastors kid so i’ve seen all these movies so many times and i hate to admit it but when i was like 11/12 i was super into the whole christianity thing and this was one of my favorite christian movies 😅 looking back at it as an atheist adult is….wow…. lmao
EDIT: i just wanted to say thank you to ethan for reminding me this existed lmao
I remember seeing this with my high school church group. I also remember being weirded out by all the feet stuff
My youth group showed this movie multiple times growing up and I’ve been WAITING for a commentary TH-camr to talk about it, thank u Ethan
I haven’t heard “if you sneezed during this video bless you” in years
Back when I was apart of my Church's youth group this was one of the movies we watched one day, and we had to take notes on it
I went to see that movie in theaterswith my church youth group. When you said the name of it I felt like I had flashbacks to 2009. I remember the pastor warning us that the movie had "serious themes" like sex and suicide. But apparently they're important for us to see, according to pastor Paul.
this video went so unbelievably hard
sploontoon is a funni name i like it
There was a movie named "The Christian Movie" in my local Dollar General, and honestly I wanted to get it out of curiosity. I resisted cause it would only encourage them, however it left an impression.
omg new trim
I like how "anonymous" your name is lol
Ethan how I’ve missed you always the best giggles
experiencing ethan's haircut induced gender envy :-( he looks so nice
I would genuinely love it if Ethan just did a high review of a pureflix movie every video, this was so good
God the way this movie had a vicegrip on my youth group back in the day
I have a cold right now and i really appreciate how you blessed the sneezes i snoze during this video
i love this new haircut so much on u ethan. slay
Once for work I had to film BTS video for a red carpet premiere. It was a small local movie that was going straight to PureFlix. They had super gross speeches beforehand about what our children should and shouldn't see in media. I was told I could stay for the screening but my queer ass got the hell out of there.
I like how you were most upset by no drink, no chip.
omg I love the haircut!! I swear Ethan is the cutest person on the internet
I absolutely had to watch this as a part of bible youth group and to this day I remember how obvious and gauche everything was - Jonny Boy’s clothes matched whether he was depressed (black) or happy (yellow).
Thanks for unlocking this memory.
I wonder if this is where Crowder had his bisexual experience he talked about having 🤔 I mean, my first same sex experience happened within the church too sooo...
that hair? thank you sir
ALMOST COULDNT TELL IF THE SHIRT SAID "GOOD BOY" OR "GOD BOY" WITH THIS ONE
Steven Crowder's character is just Jake's possessive boyfriend who is jealous that he's hanging with other people.
