A classic Priestley time-distortion tale, with some extra twists, and brought into the "swinging sixties" (I would guess, or maybe a bit later), but still with the old world charm (butlers and so in, even if not a real butler...).

He is such a clever writer. He understands human psycholgy, how human beings lose themselves, lie to themselves and each other. I hated the jarring steriotypes " hey man" characters but it was a brilliant play

What is also nice about these radio dramas is that the comments are almost always respectful and courteous. There are exceptions. I was looking forward to listening to a new version of "Heart of Darkness" the other day but noticed it was only 53m long. I scanned through the comments and felt personally affronted by one that appeared unpleasantly sexist and used the "F" word.
After listening to the play I realised he'd been remarkably restrained. I felt completely cheated. When Conrad wrote the book he set it colonial Africa, with a merchant adventurer making a trip up the river to find out what's happened to Kurtz. Other than that, the only other essential element is a line towards the end - "The horror, the horror." The meaning of that phrase has been argued about ever since, but many people think it's there to allow the reader to project his own personal fears into the book.
It's not rocket science to see how the story can be tweaked by setting it during the Vietnamese war, with a soldier going up the river to kill Kurtz, and it becomes Apocalypse Now, said by some to be one of the best and most important films ever made.
Famously, neither story has any roles for women, although in the film there is a sequence set in the jungle with Playboy Bunnies entertaining the troops - the Bunnies are real, and and include Miss August and Miss 1976. There aren't any woman's roles for a reason, one of which is that they aren't needed.
In the current version, we're back in Africa. The central character is now a female environmental campaigner going up the river to see why Kurtz hasn't been on the phone for a few weeks.
I do not have the words to describe how appallingly terrible it is. The script doesn't help. There are lines that you really wouldn't believe and they sound ridiculous. There is a musical theme throught and it's entirely out of keeping with the setting. The whole thing is an epic omnishambles. It so obviously doesn't work that I can't imagine how it got broadcast. Changing the title might improve it because you wouldn't get the crushing disappointment of the thing. But you couldn't as it's so obviously the plot.
I was so cross and disappointed at the end I actually listened to it again. How weird is that. They steal an hour of my life and give them another for free! It mainly doesn't work because of the gender change, and I feel very uncomfortable saying that. Could James Bond work as Genetta Bond? Absolutely not. (I'm absolutely not saying women can't play roles like this - Lara Croft and Kill Bill proving the point. I'm saying that they can't play these roles because it destroys the whole intention of the author) Hopefully it couldn't ever happen because the title protects it. Fine, if you want to give it ago, but the new James Bond film will give you a huge number of customers, whereas the first Genetta Bond film far less. Finally, it didn't have the defining line of dialogue in the script, but you got it still by the end as it was exactly what you were thinking.
Does Dr Who work with a woman? It's certainly not a car crash, but I wouldn't bother to watch it. Having been brought up with it from the very beginning with William Hartnell, and only ever having seen the role played by a man, I carry with me my expectations of the character. If I'd only ever seen it played by a woman I might be pretty happy. I wouldn't know what I was missing.
I usually don’t like the new “updated” versions of things...good to know.
I agree with almost everything you’ve written,however, please give the new Doctor Who a go, I think you might be pleasantly surprised-I admit I had my own reservations but this has become one of my favourite Doctors to watch.
I also had the dubious pleasure of hearing the new Heart of Darkness. I listened for five minutes and gave up. It was truly terrible!
I agree, I dont usually like later versions either because the purpose and intention of the author is usually ignored, or worse not really understood.
Well I hope your feeling better now you've got it off your chest. That said I agree with you and it's good to see you and your comments were not assailed by the ignorant or misguided - surprising really. In today's pc climate, in my view, segments of society often cross the line into misguided ignorance and worse the perpetuation of ignorance. For example: People (usually women) who criticise a work of fiction set in decades / centuries in the past because they are affronted at the blatant sexism (which in fact is usually an accurate portrayal of the times). The other day I started watching a movie (not a comedy) - a Western in which the main protagonist was an African/American who was not portraying a slave but a gun toting cowboy - leaving historical accuracy aside, I believe there are two major issues (1) there is the danger that individuals whose only source of historical education may believe that the situation for African slaves was not that bad after all given some were cowboys (which of course are another fallacy). (2) I'm not of African descent however, I find this type of unnecessary re-writing / re-inventing of the fundamental norms of an era - offensive. The Africans suffered during this dark period of America's history, white-washing the reality of the times is disrespectful.
I wholeheartedly agree with your comments regarding the femanising of traditionally male roles - women should : write their own scripts or books for new female super heroes and the resulting film should be directed and produced by females. As a woman who eventually broke through the titanium ceiling not that brittle glass one of today, I despair that women today think equality means imitation.
The sound quality is very poor. It lacks presence. The characters are too far back from the microphone .

Each person is deceiving themselves and lives in the style of character they want to be, apart from the butler who has lack of vanity and pride (a self made man) unlike all the others. A Satirical play set amongst the affluents of self deception.
