  • Frederick Bradnum, nicknamed "Freddie" was a British radio dramatist, producer, and director who penned over 70 plays and 140 dramatisations of novels for the BBC. Along with the likes of Tom Mallin, Jennifer Phillips, Peter Tegel, and Elizabeth Troop, he was considered one of the elite writers for the BBC. He was a recipient of the Prix Italia in 1957 for his script for No Going Home. Bradnum was a member of BBC North's Drama Department, and, according to BBC, Bradnum was "responsible for some of radio's classier adaptations".

This is a unique ghost story, set in a small village church. None of the cliche tropes of modern ghost stories, which allows the plot to develop naturally. I enjoyed every minute of it. There is just enough doubts and questions of faith, but none of it was oppressive. The plot twist was a welcome change.

Here's a short synopsis...although it's not MY cup of tea
""Do you know about the crowns? Virgin crowns. Unique to this church, you know. If a person is born, baptised and dies in the parish, above the age of puberty, and is a virgin, then the next of kin ask for a virgin crown. There is a sort of calling of the banns, so that if anyone wants to object they can."
When Maggie Bell died, no one did actually object, though there were several who should have done. But Maggie herself objects quite strongly.
A serious comedy for radio by Frederick Bradnum.
Starring Simon Cadell as Timothy Turner, Joanna David as Pamela Turner, Christopher Benjamin as Harold Thorpe and Angela Pleasence as Maggie Bell. "
    Cheers from Canada North

Very interesting script, and I have listened to many.
Now who would agree, someone should Resurrect this play maybe expanded with a little more time and make a movie out of it.
This script was great, and I enjoyed it...
    Thank you for this play......

Great play Uncle Chesterton ! A bit different from your average Ghosty stuff-I even rather liked the girl (ghost). I haven't enjoyed myself so much since I hung on for 14 not-out off only 2 balls ( the ball got lost in the local pond on the last ball and Me and Bob Relish ran end-to-end like Billy O, to win the game ha' ) in out annual cricket game against Nempnett Thrubwell Rugby team from Somerset.Thanx Uncle Chessie.

Angela Pleasance, daughter of the great creepy actor Donald Pleasance, always plays weird characters in her works because as she herself described her looks as ‘weird’ as if the strange parts her father played in his films was born into her face. Now that’s a weird concept🙀

Christopher Benjamin plays a very spooky spook in a sort of fairly light spook-crime drama series that's been on BBC Radio 4 / Radio 4 Extra from time to time. Can't remember the name of it at the moment. Anyway, he plays a very different character in this.

Now a real question for everyone that reads & creates posted comments :
-- Is there anyone out there that does believe in spirits ?
-- But how many out there that would have enough strength,
it completely - openly, that they do believe in spirits ?
-- Look at it this way,
    " If you believe in god ". " AS I DO " "wholeheartedly ".
You also believe in the devil ....

Bit frustrating that. Love Simon C...but his stuttering became slightly annoying. dialogue could have been better too.
