I met Rory Gallagher in Tower Records, Kensington High Street, London in the nineties. I was looking through the Blues Records rack, when I looked up to see Rory looking through the rack on the other side. I made eye contact with him and said “How are doing Rory?”. He replied “I’m fine thank you and how are you?” He died not long after. I will never forget it. I saw Rory three times in my life. Still fond memories of his live performances. He made a big impact on me and one of the greatest artists to pick up a guitar! Dave you definitely capture the Rory sound.

I have a friend who saw a guy about to chuck an old AC30 in a skip. He bought it off the guy for £40. My friend has always been a Vox guy and also uses a sixpence (only the Elizabeth II years - the others are slightly different in composition apparently) while using his trusty ol Strat. He is now a professional session musician and had the chance to back Brian at a charity event, and he even let my friend have a play on the Red Special, which was a special moment for my friend. The old Vox turned out to be from 1964 and I used it for a few years when I was in a band with him. Sorry for the length of my comment, just had to post it due to the nature of Dave's video.

I was given an AC30 that someone found on a street. Before that i bought another AC30 plus and AC50 head both for £50 that a guy would have dumped if I hadn't bought them. That's how dumb people were in the early 90s.

The Treble Booster is a very simple circuit with an unusually low input impedance (12KΩ ish).. but that 'design flaw' is what makes the sound so special. I'm going to build one on my channel.

Always loved the story of Brains sound origins. Both the confidence/absolute naieve, genuine curiosity and desire to discover from Brian, and the gracious humility of Gallagher to not just appease a kid who was presumably unknown at the time, but to be open and honest about his own personal discoveries in his rig set up. It's a great lesson in etiquette and how to behave generally as a musician, especially around younger/aspiring musicians!

@@stephent9677 That sounds about right. Was Brian in Smile by that point? I know they did reasonably well but obviously weren't as successful/well known as Queen. I suspect he was known locally for smile so I doubt Rory would have been aware of Brian either way. I wonder if he met Rory before Smile. Brian has pretty much been consistent with his gear choices. Rory must have made a big impression on him. Most guitar players are constantly tone hunting! 😜🎸😎

tone wise, May had very similar sounds to a lot of other players, but he seems to get a bit more saturation than was possible before, the real Brian May trademark sound is when he layered the guitars into harmonies, those luscious harmonies that nobody else in the world ever played, he definitely put a stake in the ground with those harmonies, but of course, there was no way he could take that sound to the stage, in the same way they couldn't play Bo Rap completely live, as a live band, they were quite raw and rocky, but that harmony sound of Brians' is like a nice warm fireplace, oddly enough, I did manage to see them at Knebworth, but I must stress, I listened to Queen because of Brian May, his solo work is really good too, Freddy wasn't really a rocker, his solo stuff is either opera or disco, ha ha.
