This four part series is the best of its kind I seen. I have an 1190 Adventure (not the R). I absolutely love my bike but am too old and inexperienced to go very far off road. 500 pounds is a lot of motorcycle to throw around, and inevitably, pick up, especially if dropped down hill in soft dirt. What this series shows is the upper end of what is possible on a properly set-up 1190 Adventure R, ridden by professional/experts. I would have loved to have tried this when in my 20s and 30s (30 to 40 years ago) but there were a couple of obstacles. I didn't have the money, and the bikes didn't exist. .
I'm quite sure I use my bike like a most people do their SUVs. They buy them with the idea that they *might* go off-road; they might use them to carry their gear to camp next to pristine mountain lakes - but...only a few owners (< 5%?) actually ever do. I occasionally ride dirt and gravel roads, gentle power line trails, and on some fairly steep grass hills between parking lots (now *that* impresses an audience), but the primary appeal of the bike is how much fun it is to ride on paved roads in the Southern Appalachian Mountains near where I live, and how well it tours. It's stable at speed, feels amazingly nimble, and stops so fast you feel like you could go over the handlebars. But I don't commute. I don't ride to get from A to B. I ride for fun. For me, what makes it fun is the power, which is breathtaking. Just stunning. Cycle World's road test reported a 10.6 quarter @ 130. I don't have the skill, or the impulse to terrify myself to replicate that, but that power is available in every situation. I enjoy merely knowing that, and sometimes using it.
    But great videos. Many thanks.

I was also glad to see you guys come to your senses and go around that river crossing.
I've owned my Africa Twin since February and wouldnt have crossed that myself, probably even in a 4x4.

i have owned mine since mid 2013 and i love it. its amazing at how well it reacts like a dirt bike, i noticed that you guys have the same problem where they are abit nose heavy on landings though, its when its airborne that you notice the weight, or when you have to pick it up lol...

Hey Adam, I need your opinion. I am impressed what you can do with this KTM and I admire you. I ride BMW R1200GS 2011 and I know that you have been driven both of this bikes. Is the KTM lighter and better in handle than BMW? What about heat from the engine? I need Your opinion before I decide to change my bike.

I watched this before. Awesome! Can someone explain to me: why does one of the 1190 bikes (assume different model years) flicker with the day driving light and the other one not. Also one seems to have much stronger main stand springs or some kind of damping, as you can see one of the main stand bounce around like crazy on the jumps while the other one seems pretty solid.

Giday. I'm loving all of your videos and have a question about choice of an adventure bike if your able to provide your take.
I'm in Brisbane but ride a Lot through SEQ as well as in the Victorian High Country. I'm on the old tractor, the DRZ400e. I'm an intermediate rider (better than a newby but not totally advance). I ride the trails as well as, as much single tract as I can find.
I want to get into adventure biking where I travel great distances over our great land, but also want to be able to get down and into remote to check it out. I think I want a mid size adventure bike but have not made my mind up on any as yet.
    What would you recommend.
    Regards, Joe.

Hi! I'm a new subscriber and have just watched part 1-4. I have been riding sportbikes since mid 80's and have just sold my Suzuki GSX-R 1000 2006. I started to look for a bike to start riding with my 8 year old son and since he like orange I looked at KTM. I found 1190 Adventure R and I like it more and more the more I learn about it. I have som offroad experience but not that much. I did ride the old Africa Twin all year here in Sweden with studded tires in the winter. I think that the 1190 will allow me to keep up with my sportbike friends on the tarmack as well as allow me to explore the Swedish gravel roads and allow me to learn more about that. Perhaps even try the Trans European Trail? 😊 Thanks for a great channel! /Anders

As a noob ADV rider how do you mange to stop the front end washing out on that pea gravel? Everytime I'm on it I feel like the bike is going to go out from under me if its even tilted over a little. Is it a case of just give it more throttle through the corners or will that be a dangerous way for a noob rider to approach it?

    Great video Adam,
I know your not trying to make out the 1190 is the same as an enduro bike they seem like a great machine and in the hands of a capable rider can do a lot of technical single track stuff (e.g. chris birch doing the hut track or Nerb1 going through the simpson and recently the crab track) not bad for a bike that weights 2 X 450's ;-).

I totally love these videos and they definitely have inspired me. I just don't understand however how it's enjoyable to ride so fast so close and to get my equipment and bike sandblasted with debris. Perhaps it's for the film as their demo bikes.
