Generally agreed. While there are some people who go too far in adult topics family media should discuss (I.e. Mr. Enter saying that Turning Red should have focused on post-9-11 paranoia because it was set in 2002), the thing is, kids media, for the most part, sucks. What should be aimed to be made is family films, since they can appeal to everyone in a family watching, young or old. If something is pandering to a younger and/or older audience because its core audience has moved on from it, something has gone terribly, terribly wrong. And generally, Sticker Star is a bad game with few saving graces (graphics and visuals, music, some good levels and a couple nice characters, Shy Guy). I might say that TTYD is ridiculously overrated or that Color Splash and Origami King are overhated, but Sticker Star is the PM game that near universally is just known as the worst of the bunch, and honestly, rightfully so. I actually was talking with a friend of mine this morning, and she summed it up best, Sticker Star is one of few games where she just actively wasn’t having any fun for the majority of it. At least with games like Superman 64 or Sonic 06 or FNaF: Security Breach, she had fun messing around with it because it’s so jank, but Sticker Star is for the most part, nothing, and its good parts are few and far between.

Plus, it was the first Paper Mario that I beat since I struggled a lot with Super Paper Mario as I had just started learning english at the time. I then discovered the original Paper Mario, and it definitely feels a lot, lot better. Patch Notes for those who just want the new content:
2:29 Some people challenged how I interpreted an interview at the start of Part 1. I included this perspective.
44:10 Part 2's running away explanation was originally wrong. It's actually even worse than I thought it was.
51:00 Lack of EXP image now credits the artist. This was a mistake caused by reverse-image searching and thinking a repost was the original. I'm sorry for that.
1:34:31 Gooper Blooper crash was clarified.
2:11:11 Moved from episode 6, the part about Cheap Chomp getting increased speed was added in the proper part.
2:17:40 Part 5's fight with Petey Piranha has a new section about how poorly made the Infinijump Stickers are.

But I will say the remakes of the original Resident Evil(on the GameCube); Resident Evil 2/3(despite SOME issues in the RE2/3 Remake; like for RE2; they ruined Ben Bertolucci's character; and as a huge fan of the original RE2; I was pretty pissed off; I had to say); but I loved the RE3 remake; because they improved some characters like: Brad Vickers(the cowardly helicopter pilot who ran away before in the original RE3; but regains his sense of justice and decided to come back); Mikhail Victor; the leader of the U.C.B.S. unit that Carlos is a part of; Murphy; it's not that much of an improvement compared to the original RE3; but I liked it) Nicolai Ginovaef(who; to be fair; didn't have much of a character in the original version; but wasn't a generic James Bond/regular movie villain this time) Tyrell Patrick; who was a bad guy in the original RE3; but in this version actually helps out; and sacrificed himself against the Nemesis to help Jill escape. Sure; I missed out on RE3 the first time around; but that's my own fault; for not being old enough; and for not having the console to play it on. But I was allowed to play RE2 on the N64 though...and that's why Leon Kennedy is my favorite character in that series. And also: the RE4 remake. I mean; RE4 was already perfect originally anyways; so it didn't NEED a remake necessarily; but I'm glad it got one anyways. Sure they say you can't improve on perfection; but when it comes to Resident Evil; you most definitely CAN with remakes. But RE5 and 6 definitely need them. But if you don't know what I'm talking about or don't care; that's fine too. Because I've been rambling on too long anyway; so...sorry for that.

As someone used to long video essays and reviews, the most interesting thing to me is that it is structured kinda like your Let's Plays, in linear order of how you play the game, but with specific takedowns of various aspects of the game given between the explanation of what you need to do to get through the game. I have to imagine that took some planning in order to figure out what to talk about and when. The more that I think about that awful moment where the Wiggler segment kicks the Bowling Ball out of the way, the only reason I could ever think of why it even exists is that they didn’t want you to have two segments at a time, since the level behind the bowling pins leads you to finding the next segment, but that’s the only reason I could think of why they’d do that ( *I’m not defending this decision, mind you* ).
Also, I never mentioned it previously, but despite the video ending on a negative statement about Sticker Star, I really like the overall hopeful tone of the end of it.

I remember when this game was coming out, I was so excited. I was disappointed by Super Paper Mario simply because it wasn’t like 64 or Thousand Year Door so when I found out the next game was gonna be turn based again I was hyped like crazy and begged for the game for Christmas.
I finally got it and once I played for awhile and saw how linear the chapters were, how cryptic some of the puzzles were and the lack of partners and fun NPCs to interact with I was so upset and never even bothered with the other two modern games. The Thousand Year Door remake will be the first Paper Mario game I buy in over 10 years.
The one positive thing I could say about this game (other than the music and visuals) is that it gave me a new appreciation for Super Paper Mario. A game I previously disliked. It showed me that while it was more of a platformer with RPG elements, it still had its own Paper Mario like identity in its writing and characters and it tried something new without abandoning the biggest things that make the series great.

I had a somewhat similar experience with Sticker Star. I loved Thousand Year Door and while I didn't like Super Paper as much as the first two, I did still like it, so when I convinced my dad to take me to the game shop one weekend to get a new game for me to play on the trip we were about to take, I immediately grabbed Sticker Star. Heck, I even got the version that came with some actual stickers. I don't remember if that was some sort of collectors edition or a launch bonus or what, but I had it. Think there was a poster, too. Anyway, I started playing it, and I remember getting to the desert world boss and then... stopping. The game was either frustrating or boring. Those were the only two emotions it was able to evoke in me while playing it, and so when I found myself unable to beat the boss (I think I used the baseball bat too early, and I couldn't be bothered to try and kill him with normal stickers. Either that or I didn't get the bat) I just took it out of my 3DS and played the GBA games I had on my 3DS for the rest of the trip and never touched Sticker Star again.

I remember reading somewhere (I cant remember where so please correct me if Im wrong) that Chugga brought up at one point that Bobby's sacrificed bothered him because it retconed how Bob-ombs didnt die from exploding in the previous games. And... I get that, But to be honest? I always imagined that Bob-ombs in the Paper Mario universe can deside if they wanted to live or not. The enemy bob-ombs didnt reappear if they exploded after all. (unless you exit and reenter the area but thats just common in RPG's anyways so I dont count that) And... tbh Bobby's sacrifice actually got to me. I legit wasnt expecting it when I first played the game, and how both Mario and Olivia react to it helped in making it work a lot more than Kirsti's sacrifice to me.

Within Origami King I'm not sure if Bobby's death was necessary from the story perspective due there being history of bobombs living after exploding.
So I think the real reason Bobby died was for balance with the game's mechanics and not having too many partners at a time.
One of the big things in game design is focusing on what is most important to the genre first and building other pieces on top of that clearly defined system.

This also make Origami King super awkward because you have seven strong villains, Bobby, and Olivia, and yet all are dead by the game’s end.

"Chugga Tapes Up Paper Mario 64"
"Chugga Busts Down The Thousand Year Door"
    "Chugga Purifies Super Paper Mario"
    "Chugga Paints Out Color Splash"
"Chugga Folds Into The Origami King"
    Pretty cool, right?

Even as a 5 year old kid who didn't look at things with a critical eye I could tell in the back of my mind this game was horrible, but I was lied to by people around me who kept reinforcing the idea that I was just "bad at video games" the first world was the only world where I didn't get stuck any more than 1 time at the big buzzy beetle.
I stuck at the first door in the first desert level, I got stuck at the yoshi spinx level, I got stuck at the coffin maze, I got stuck at the sandstorm, I got stick at the tower building segment, I got stuck for AGES at the hieroglyph toad segment, I got stuck at the big cheep cheep boss MANY TIMES, I got stuck at every corner of world 3,
At this point I gave up and just watched my brother beat the game, and then played the final boss in his file because it was the only re-fightable boss.
Oh and because it was an unexplainable tradition in my family to delete yoyr progress in a game when yoy forget what the hell you are I got to even get stuck at parts I originally did first try,
5 or so years later I come back
the only place I DIDN'T get stuck more than a couple times for short periods was chapter 4, I got stuck in the shy guy level, the world 5 boss level and the boss itself,
And by the end I think I just brute forced my way to the final boss because the only thing I knew how to do us use ice to freeze the potobos. 10 year old me was still so entranced by the final boss phase one music that I tricked myself into thinking the final boss was the best part of the game.
Oh yeah and through all of this I used multiple walk throughs, and us completely out of order, a ran back and forth between different stages millions of times, I just put it in order to make it easy to follow along
The funny thing is since this was my first paper mario game I thought this game was actually one of the more unique and original games, I didnt have the biggest collection of mario games so I thought charcaters like mr blizzard were originals.
    How funny.
The only other games I got stuck on for entire years are (ironically) super paper mario, but that was because I was too scared of mimi to keep playing, and kirby mass attack, which was because I had missed the dialogue that told me how to unlock the final world.
I have never seen a game try so hard to stop you from completing it on every turn.
I beat super meat boy as a 8 year old in like a week or month, and they put that game on the list of hardest games ever created at the time.
Paper mario sticker star without a walkthrough has to be one of the most abysmally hard games ever created, right next to hello neighbor without a walk through, but at least that game is short, and has a plethora of (albeit unintentional) ways to beat every obstacle.

I feel like the biggest issue with the required secret thing (block, doors, etc) is that they don't come naturally like the way they do in alot of games. it's like they just randomly throw things in like "yeah that's a thing in this OTHER game" without it being as common as it should to make the player even think they'd use it for something required.

Sticker Star was my second Paper Mario after Super (which I didn't get terribly far into). I knew that people loved the series, but neither game really gave me a good idea of why. Especially Sticker Star- I could never figure out the windmill stage in the first world, the Yoshi Sphinx OR the bullcrap backtracking in World 3.
I gave Color Splash a chance. Couldn't get past the first world because of a Toad's underwear.
I gave Origami King a chance and... it clicked with me. Yes, it's the "new" formula that Sticker Star started, it villainizes fans who don't like generic Toad #456, and Bobby's existence and sacrifice were miserable attempts at making a new "character" and making us feel bad for his demise, but it's arguably the most polished of the modern trio of games. with a decent story, well-defined world, bangin' soundtrack, and a battle system that doesn't completely suck Goomba butts.
And with this series complete... I utterly LOATH Sticker Star now. It's not just a bad game, it's a bad Mario game. It's a horrible Paper Mario game and an abysmal introduction to the franchise. Non-characters like "Bowser" or the Toads and obnoxious characters like Kersti. Pointless combat. A world so basic it'd make New Super Mario Bros. 2 look like Super Mario Bros Wonder. And a legacy of unoriginality and "good enough" mentalities that tainted the Mario brand for a decade.
I'm grateful that Super Mario RPG and Thousand-Year Door are here once again because it means Nintendo's listened. Thousands of voices, including myself, have cried out and demanded a truly fresh RPG worthy of the Nintendo Seal of Quality. We got some with the Mario and Rabbids games, and the remakes are Nintendo's way of seeing if we're willing to buy what we asked for. If this results in a true Paper Mario 4, it'll all have been worth it.
You can say my hat is off to you, Emile. Thank you for giving this game the thorough new-one-ripping it deserved and laying it to rest. May Sticker Star rot and may we be free from its corrupting stank.

I remember playing this game and running into all the "mandatory secrets" that I would sometimes find by chance but usually have to look up a guide for. They didn't make me feel smart for finding a secret, which is how you usually feel when you find a secret in a game - they made me feel stupid for not being able to find the way to beat the level! I'm glad I'm not the only one, lol.

2:23:53 I actually did manage to beat Bowser without using Kersti back when I was younger, but it took a bit of planning. A few Infinijumps for the arms, twenty Iron Jumps for the face, and the High Heel and Squirt Gun to make the face a bit faster, since those are the only multihitting Thing stickers. I oddly don't remember hating the game, but it *was* eleven or so years ago. I think I just wanted to sell Kersti and was disappointed I couldn't keep her in the album.

This whole review was SO fitting for Chugga's Channel.
Over the 10 year since I've been watching him (Oh God I've been watching him since I was 11, I'm getting old) him whole channel has been about him playing games he loves in some way. There have been times were some of the games he played have had things that he didn't like but they didn't ruin his overall enjoyment of the game, hence why does a Let's Play of it. However, Sticker Star has been a game he has vehemently HATED, so him doing a LP of it wouldn't be as fun as it would normally would.
Turning the LP on to a Review and going over everything technically wrong and just personal gripes, allows him to have MUCH more fun with it, and it still feels like a Chuggaconroy Let's Play.
This is something I love to see come back in some form.
Also, I blocked the time I played this game from my mind, and this made me remember how much I hated a lot it.

I like the aesthetic that sticker star introduced to the series both artistically by leaning into the paper and cardboard diorama theme with interesting level design and musically which I'd like to see continued in the series going forward but in terms of gameplay and story you are absolutely right. the story is nonexistent, there really aren't any unique characters more general bush strokes of groups like toads, goombas, shyguys, etc., the combat is a travesty and the puzzle solving's no better, and worst of all is how they did bowser in this iteration as his boss battle sums up everything wrong with this game. He's aesthetically pleasing sure but Bowser has no character, his boss battle is confusing and filled with required puzzles which you won't be able to solve on your first go, and worst of all is that it gives what is probably the most annoying companion ever the chance to shine with literally no buildup or reasoning trying to make us feel something for this train wreck of a character. this game is like the gilded age of videogames all style no substance.

I just wanted to say, growing up with Chugga and Nintendo really became my childhood. Back in 2010, Nintendo wasn't that popular in my country. So when I discovered this big world online at the time, it blew my mind.
I then asked for my parents to buy a console for me and got a Wii, started to play games and watch let's plays on the internet, and Chugga introduced me to great game franchises such as Pikmin, Kirby, Zelda, Luigi's mansion, and the best game I've ever played: Super Paper Mario.
It really made me who I am today, to the point where I wanna became a game designer someday, and learn from the good and the bad, to see if I can create something life changing for someone out there too!
But in conclusion, I just wanted to thank the Internet and mainly Chugga to the amazing childhood that they gave me, I will always be who I am today because of it. ✨

1:51:45 I wanted to speak up about this part again to note something about this boss fight. Battling this guy normally shows an 'interesting' game mechanic, getting the big boo to around half health will have him turn the lights on, making him unable to be damaged by normal stickers because Mario can't see him (something hinted at in the room next to the basement). In order to beat him during this, you could either use the stapler/pin/tape to pin him in place revealing his position, or use a water sticker to extinguish the candle light to make him visible again (Yes, using the water pistol makes you have to aim, and yes I love it for that reason). Thankfully, this actually IS one of the few times the game hints at using these things, as both the watering can and the stapler are thrown in your face here, plus the shortcut to toad town allows you to turn them into stickers immediately after getting them; fantastic level design here... too bad the game encourages braindead brute force behavior instead of you know THINKING!!

Ironically enough. Sticker star holds a special place in my heart because of so many reasons. It was the first “RPG” I played so it introduced me to this genre. It also introduced me to the world of lets playing on youtube. It taught me that there are other people out there like me that liked Nintendo. It taught me that its ok to still be playing video games as an adults and that girls/women also like playing video games. And funny enough it introduced me to Chuggaconroy. I got stuck in the blooper boss and so I finally got the bright idea at 13 years of age to look it up online. It led me to I belive Zackscottgames and LuckySevenDx. Later on I decided to look up other lets play from those guys and it somehow led me to Chuggaconroy. All of that because Sticker Stars flaws drove me to use TH-cam as a guide.

More than 1 damage to bosses per jump.
