Never Say Can't: The Bruce Cook Story

  • This is the story of how Bruce Cook, a rising FMX star, suffered a catastrophic injury that would have ended most riders' desire to ever want to ride again, let alone continue an FMX career. Bruce broke his back and became paralyzed while attempting to land the first-ever double frontflip on a motorcycle. Despite a grim prognosis, he made it his goal to get back on the bike and break more records despite his permanent injury.

Dude...few people live life...most just go through it...I also had my first traum alert flight to a hospital 39. Over jumped a table top the day before thanksgiving with a wife that was 8 months pregnant, broken back, multiple ribs, shoulder blade and a thoroughly bruised confidence bone. 7 days in UM Ryder ICU in Miami. Promised my wife I would never scare her again.....1 year later I crashed a hang glider.....luckily nothing broken but the glider... promised her again....then 5 years later I stalled a paraglider and fell around 30 feet to my back. Tail bone to L3 fracture, multiple bulging disks, but this was the third strike....also I’ve been a firefighter for 20 years....a wife and 3 kids...I’ve been so lucky. Bruce I get you brother...you have a drive that most people are afraid of and push down into the abyss. Few people can say they made their own path. You burned the path. Lit it up! Inspired isn’t good enough...legend.

I've a bud with a spinal injury near his T7. John called it, "body doesn't listen from the nipples down". We spent many hours practicing and getting his hand controls and hand-eye coordination to compensate enough to do doughnuts and later some drifting in his 80s corvette and Mitsubishi Starion Turbo and a few others. Despite not knowing the full dedication, I really appreciate the magnitude in effort it takes to accomplish things. We both moved from San Diego, so haven't seen him in a while, but we got up to some of the best mischief!

Usually I’m kind of cynical about these kind of “feel good” or wow he did it! stories. All the positivity is just too easy for me to make fun of in my head. But when he started riding again, and when he hit the first backflip into the foam pit, I was dam near crying man. I used to ride motocross for years and I never even got close to trying a backflip and both my legs work perfectly fine. Here this guy is with no use of his legs, constant pain, the threat of catastrophic injury, pretty much every single reason ever needed to not try it. And he didn’t even hesitate for a minute. What a fucking hero you are Bruce. I realize after watching this that I truly have nothing to complain about, and that your attitude and approach to life determines what and how you do everything. This guy is out there putting on a badass show for the world doing the thing he loves more than anything, and nothing short of death can stop him. Thank you to everyone who made this awesome documentary! I’ve never watched anything on TH-cam for almost 2 hours, but I didn’t want to put my phone down. As a disabled vet who knows about daily pain and everything that comes from it, I watched in awe. So many times I want to just sit here and not do anything, but you have truly inspired me to look at things more positively, Bruce. After watching what you’ve accomplished, I now realize that I need to stop feeling sorry for myself and get off my ass. I wish someday to see a show, and hope for the honor to meet and thank you in person. Your video truly touched me. Thank you for sharing your story, Bruce.

This biography is so well made it just enraptured me the whole time. Fantastic work Nitro Circus crew, and you're a legend and inspiration Bruce! Literally 5 seconds after his first test ride on his bike he's trying to pop a wheelie, that should show his true determination and desire to get back to where he was as soon as possible.

I have an identical twin brother and we grew up on a large farm and lived almost exactly like you and your brother except we were amateur skateboarders, and one day I decided to climb the whole way to the top of our “eagles nest” (stand alone 8 story tree house) and backflip to the trampoline and my brother and cousin were jumping not expecting it, their bouncing threw me around 11 stories up and I hit the roof of the treehouse that flipped me around and I ended up crushing both of my hips my lower legs snapped and my ankles were both smashed… My heart broke hearing your brothers experience because the last thing I remembered was how terrified my brother was and when I came out of surgery the first thing I remember was begging to see him so he wasn’t so scared, I was so lucky to eventually rebuild my hips and your incredible video just mentally reset my outlook on things! I’m emotional and you inspire me 18 years after my accident to fight the pain because you are so strong and I got lucky, you’re amazing man! I hid from my sponsors and comp representative for years and here you are showing such incredible strength and appreciation for life and that inspired me more than you could imagine brother, God bless you and your family and keep showing others how to decide not to hide!also I still skate to this day but I have always regretted the years I let it hold me back and I respect you an incredible amount for your determination and perseverance, your an inspiration for the ages bro you rock!

This sport has advanced to a level that's borderline incomprehensible. When considering the speeds, heights, weight of the bikes and number of risks taken daily, I'm honestly surprised that nearly every career doesn't end simultaneously with their lives. I mean more power to them, and I pray they remain safe, but defying gravity with the extreme weight of their huge balls in tow...is simply amazing!

I broke my T5 & T6 when my horse came out from under me. I was 64!
I had my bionic rods put in and did my rehab time. Three months later & without the Dr. approval I was back up on my horse again! That was just over a yr. ago and it's been a slow road, but I'm back in the saddle, a bit slower, but I could not be happier! I can now ride for 2½ hrs.
    Keep it up Bruce!
