Great performance. The sad, mad, and humorous irony is that I was singing Green Fields - during my OEF-I(Iraq) and OEF-A(Afghanistan) Combat Rotations. I sung this 52 times for the 52 souls that we lost in combat. My own little send off to them.

Bless you Denise for keeping your Great Gandad's and your family's history alive.
For what it's worth, my maternal grandfather Ralph Kell joined the 13th Battalion First AIF in Sydney (Aust) in 1914 and went ashore at Gallipoli on the first day. He survived that campaign and then went to France with the Australian 3rd Brigade. My paternal grandfather joined the Royal Navy in 1912 (yes a professional). He served in the Dardanelles (Gallipoli) as well and later in the North Sea.
Both these blokes came back pretty broken after WW1, but were both called up from the reserves in 1939 and came back after WW2 even more broken.
Now we have another generation of broken returned servicemen/women. I am a veteran myself and can tell you that a few medals and a pension don't fix what goes on in many veterans' heads. We need to do better than this, grow up and just stop fighting each other.
I hope my kids will not have to deal this nonsense again but as we all know, history tends to rhyme.
      Take care.

I've never been to "Dublin City" but that is a visit I would like to make. I suspect that positioning of these various singers has something to do with pecking order. The longer you've been there and the better you are the better position you get. This guy had an important song but what looks like a horrible place to sing it. Thanks.

Again and again and again and again. It’s like the street sweeper was there to just sweep away their memories, dedication and their lives. Too many Willie McBrides are lost forever. I was revisiting this song to perform myself and found a fantastic version by Finbar Furey & Christy Dignam on the late show. I the searched more to compare the words form different artists. I have to say Gavin, that this version matches the quality of the aforementioned. In many ways even better. Absolutelty wonderful performance and beautiful to see a young man engaging in the emotion of the futility of war. As others had made comments about the number of people walking past, I decided to count them from the actual start of the song to the last note. I made it 269.
It seemed so many, just then imagine the men dying in the British ranks on the first morning of the Battle of the Somme. 19,240 Dead from 7am to midday - Poigniantly that's the equivilent of 461 dying whilst Gavin performed this. (More than 1 death per second) Food for thought.

Would love to hear a studio version. RIP Young Willie McBride.
To those of you committing on the people walking by, what you don't see are those behind the camera enjoying this young man at his craft.

When written by Eric it was (and still) titled "No man's land". Nice version by this young man. I have performed it for many years, including last night. I met Eric when he came out to the Hong Kong folks festival (twice) and had a few beers with him - nice man.

Lot of chat about who wrote the tune, it was Eric Bogle and he is Scottish. He's also laughing cause he registered it as Green Fields In France and No Mans Land. Coined it in. Doesnt take away from this young lad, great version. ❤

I have loved this Eric Bogle song since I first heard it many years ago and this is a most beautiful version by Gavin.
There are thousands of my Australian countrymen lying alongside yours in those green fields as well as New Zealanders, Canadians. French, English, Indians, South Africans; the list goes on. The thing is, they are lying in the same soil as the Germans. The dead have no enemies.
The song speaks perfectly to the futility of war on all sides to me as a former serviceman and veteran of 30yrs in the RAN with two grandfathers who fought in both world wars. Both of them came back pretty broken.
I am amazed by the people just walking past, I imagine they are either camera shy or just don't get it - I would have been fixed to the spot. Well done mate.

I love the way the Scots pronounce "willy". I think the fureys and the Irish embraced it because 1916 means a lot to them for the Easter rising, not just world war 1. (A world war cemetery bogle had visited and got inspiration to write the song)

I really enjoyed your version of Eric Bogle's song but in the introduction you said it was written by The Fureys. Eric Bogle was not one of the Fureys. They liked his song which was called No Man's Land when he wrote it but he registered it under both titles.

This is really beautiful and to hear a young man sing this song is like a breath of fresh air, it's just so sad that the people passing by seem to be so indifferent to this emotional anti war song, no doubt one of the best ever wrote, the late great Eric Bogle would be proud of this you mans rendition, thank you Gavin for your sincerity and and the way this song was sung.

Gavin: You are a treasure, my-friend! Truly! A very REAL treasure, and you're an anomaly for your generation, which you should be quite proud of. As the viewers of this video can plainly see, there are countless souls, walking past you, mindlessly in the background, completely oblivious to your skill, the song at-hand, its lyrics, or what is being said on behalf of the many veterans who lost their lives worldwide, who gave their lives for these apathetic losers! Bless you for caring, bless you for showcasing the plight of these precious veterans, one and all, and bless you for bringing the only generation or two, who ever truly mattered in this world, into focus.
