He can't survive his own guilt and the true purpose of his living was redemption of Klaus but after it was over, he got carried away in his guilt
Yes, sometimes i think about it too. As much as he had all the love for klaus and family's burden to bear, he had a more personal reason to die for - a hope to unite with hayley in the afterlife.
He couldn't fathom what he done to Haley and he could not live without Klaus.

Elijah is the only one who promised Hayley multiple times that he will keep her safe, but in the end, (without memory ofcourse) he was the cause of hayley's death - The only promise that Elijah Mikaelson broke in 1000 years of his existence.
One of my favorite quotes that Hailey says is something along the lines of if I had my own world it would just be you (Elijah) me and hope... Klaus can visit on the weekends

Yesssss. I've been saying this. I want Hope to have another near death experience and she goes to the cabin in the bayou and sees the light and music and laughter and she opens the door and sees her mum. And then the next episode should open up with two people dancing and a slow shot of elijah and Hayley dancing and then turning around to see Hope.

I wanted them to be together the second I realized they had chemistry
just brilliant.
In season one when Hayley died Elijah accused Klaus for taking her away from him but in the end Elijah was the reason Hayley was taken away from them.
I think Elijah was referring more to Klaus' enemies which was true in the end. Klaus was the one who killed Greta's husband and loved ones a 100 years ago which caused her to seek revenge by going after Hayley and Hope.
