I realized with today’s reading, that in the past I’ve only read the “sugar sticks” from the OT, the encouraging verses. I now understand how important it is to read it all, the good and bad, the comforting and shocking to truly help me grow in faith and understanding of God and His Word. Thank you TLC!

Today's was a hard read w so much against the disobedient. But wow, did her clarification in the utube podcast make it easier to understand. I so needed to hear that the secret is for protection also. To know that God has the big pic under control. So hard when adult kids are states away & busy & the connection is so different.

Today is one of the hardest days’ reading, and not just because the curses of Deut 28 (that are all realized in 2 Kings) are horrifying. “God has secrets known to no one” (Deut 29:29), and looking back on life’s tragedies, I wouldn’t have been able to live or function if I knew the devastation that God would allow. And so it is a mercy that “we only know in part” (1 Cor 13:9), but “when completeness comes, what is in part disappears…and then we will see face to Face” (1 Cor 13:10, 12). But today, what God has revealed to us of Himself “belongs to us and our children forever” (Deut 29:29), all the blessings of His rich, rewarding character.

Deut 29:29 "the revealed things belong to us forever..." The truths God reveals to you in His Word are yours forever. When you read His Word, you are allowing Him to inscribe His words on the tablets of your heart. Scripture is literally becoming part of you, which is transforming you. (I found this hand written in the margin of my Bible, maybe from a sermon long ago. But it is so beautiful and applicable to our journey of reading His Word every day!)

I love how God commands that He blesses EVERYONE that follow Him. From the elders to the laymen, from the women to the babies, AND even those that are WITH them. How many times I think of the fact that my cup runs over with blessings and those with me, whether family, friends, or even strangers, can benefit from it. We are called to walk in His blessings and not curses to show forth His GLORY ❤️🙌 So blessed to be HIS 🙏 Lord let Your light shine thru me to others and be a witness to all those around me of Your love, mercy, grace, compassion, AND BLESSINGS

I found it interesting that in Deut 29:4 it says, “But to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.” Then right after this it shows how in the wilderness as the Lord led them neither their shoes nor clothes wore out, the Lord also fed them food and drink no other nations had, and led them to defeat the strong nations that opposed them. God was leading them out of the wilderness, showing them His good provision and protection. God had the power to open their eyes and hearts to fully understand who and what He is, but instead chose to show them by example.

Love this: God made the covenant NOT ONLY with the Israelites, but with future generations, ❤with all. Believers, foreigners, whoever trusts in Him. Reminds me of Jesus prayer for future believers. Those who come to Him.
    Father God:
”It is not with you alone that I am making this sworn covenant, but with whoever is standing here with us today before the Lord our God, and with whoever is not here with us today.“
    ‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭29‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭ESV‬‬
    Son God, Jesus:
”“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.“
    ‭‭John‬ ‭17‬:‭20‬-‭21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

God loves His chosen people and equips them in mind, body, and spirit to enter the promised land and receive the blessings He has waiting for them.
God gives Moses the strongest language the Israelites will understand to encourage them to follow Him. He promises great blessings for the Israelites when they obey Him in faith. He also promises great curses when they turn from him. The size of the curses in scripture seems to be more than three times the size of the blessings. Also, the curses seem to shift part way from general descriptions to very specific depictions of events that ultimately tell of the future of the Israelites. The curses go on for so long that any memory of "if" at the beginning is lost and mentally is replaced with "when". The Isrealites are told that they will choose a king and they will be taken to an unfamiliar nation. There they will serve pagan gods and become an example of God's wrath to the nations. None of the investments they make in the future will work out and they will not profit by them. God, through Moses, tells of a time where the nation will be under siege and resort to abominable acts such as cannibalism of their children. This comes to pass in the events of 2 Kings 6:24-30 and is described in Lamentations 4:1-11. Elsewhere in scripture and in secular historical records are further confirmations that God's curses did indeed come to pass, both in biblical times and up to the modern age. God, almost desperately, wants the Israelites to choose to obey and paints extremely graphic verbal images of what will happen *when* they fail - not *if* they should fail. The destiny of the Israelites is in their own hands.
Despite the curses that are in the future of the Israelites, God gives words of hope to Israel though Moses. The covenant originally made with the generation of Israel that left Egypt is renewed with the current and future generations and all of God's great works on their behalf are retold. Yet God says that the people have not been given the ability to understand the significance of these events. These words also tell of the future when they reject their own messiah because of their inability to see the gift right in front of them that they so desperately desired. Only those who had been sent God's Holy Spirit will understand and appreciate the work of Christ. Seeing great wonders first-hand means nothing without God's work to change a heart, both for the ancient Israelites and for us today - right now. We are the workers who are called to assist, in obedience, in God's work.
God, through Moses, tells of the judgment against those who break the covenant and choose to serve earthly gods instead of the Lord. People will say they have peace in their heart as they believe and serve false religions, but God will not spare them. The peace they feel in delusion is false as is their misplaced faith in anything other than God. They are born spiritually dead and cannot see their peril because of not having the Spirit to see. Again, this applies to the ancient Israelites, the events surrounding Christ, and throughout subsequent history all the way to today.
Finally, Moses speaks that although God has not told us everything and has secrets - for His own purposes and likely because we are incapable of understanding - those things He has revealed represent knowledge forever that can be used by His chosen people to serve Him in obedience and faith.
God sincerely loves His chosen people and wants them to obey out of faith and their love for Him. Sadly, God knows they will fail to do so but leaves room for hope to those who will.

Omo, this cursing ehn 😅 I figured that when you walk away from being protected by God, harm naturally comes to you and that's how I see this curses in today's reading. It wasn't God cursing them in the literal sense, it was just the fact that they willingly chose to not be subject under the mighty arm of God.

I declare the blessings in Deut 18, especially v6- I am blessed coming in and blessed going out; v8- everything I put my hand to is blessed; v11- I am granted abundant prosperity; v12- the work of my hands is blessed; & v13- I am the head, not the tail. 🙏🏽

In Deuteronomy 28, the list of blessings and curses are given. The people are reminded that if they follow the Lord, then they will be blessed. But, if they do not obey and follow the Lord, then they will be cursed. The blessings include their land and livestock being fertile. Their women will be fertile and bear children. They will be healthy and have no sickness. They will be blessed in the city, and in the field, the work of their hands will be blessed. They will get rain in its season, and the ground will flourish. Other nations that rise up against them will be defeated. They will be the lender and not the borrower. They will be the head and not the tail. They will go up and not down. Everything that they put their hand to will prosper. If they are cursed, the opposite will happen. Their land and livestock will not be fertile. The women will experience infertility. Their enemies will defeat them. They will be the tail, not the head. They will be the borrower, not the lender. They will deal with all types of sickness and disease. In fact, all of the plagues that the Lord put on Egypt will come on them. Falling away from the Lord will be a way worse outcome for them.
In 28: 36-37, it says, "The Lord will bring you and your king whom you set over you to a nation that neither you nor your fathers have known. And there you shall serve other gods of wood and stone. And you shall become a horror, a proverb, and a byword among all the peoples where the Lord will lead you away." Wow. This is a prophecy. There will come a time when Israel will fall away from the Lord. They will not follow Him and will not repent. We can be forewarned of what's to come, and if we're not careful to heed those words, we'll find ourselves in a place that we don't want to be. The Lord knows what will happen with Israel, yet in chapter 29, He renews His covenant with them.
Moses tells them that "the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear" (29: 4). But, they are reminded that God has been providing for them and watching over them the last 40 years. In all of that time of wandering in the wilderness, their clothes did not wear out nor did their sandals wear out on their feet (29: 5). And, He has led them to defeat enemies mightier than they are. This revealed info should lead to worship. God is so gracious and merciful. He provides for us all that we need, yet we can still be selfish brats who are rebellious and ungrateful. Sometimes, we have to go astray like the prodigal son in Luke to realize our foolishness. But, when we come to our senses, what secret things that belong to the Lord that He chooses to reveal to us, will belong to us and to our children forever, that we may turn from evil and do all of His law (29: 29).

  • @karenevans6035

    Deut 28-29
Moses is going over the blessings and cursings in relation to their obedience to God.
Victory in battle and many other things.
God commands blessings! Blessings go where God tells them to go. Life, growth and rain follow.
God’s protection and provision is what follows obedience.
When Israel thrives they will lend to their neighbor in need.
Covenant curses were not just the absence of blessing, but the complete reversal of blessing. This is covenant language and not God’s character. There is a difference.
God does not delight in harming anyone.
We do not want a God who lets us rebel without consequence. We want a God that calls us back when we stray.
That’s who our God is. Not a God of punishment but of discipline and protection. God‘s discipline protects us from the far greater harm we would bring on ourselves and others if we continued in rebellion unchecked.
God implores the people to obey.
”“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.“ Deuteronomy‬ ‭29‬:‭29‬ ‭
What God tells us is for our obedience and our joy. So is what He hides from us. Its good that we don’t know everything. It’s good that we have to walk very close with Him in step with Him.
If we possessed all knowledge, we might exalt ourselves against God. But don’t we already sometimes do that with the little that we know.
God helps us to trust and obey Him.

God blesses obedience and curses disobedience. The curses for disobedience were hard to read especially the part about eating their own sons and daughters. This is horrifying. But we know, even after this stern warning, the people go through times of disobedience. Thank God it's not the end of the story though!

    • @hbrown5068
      @hbrown5068 ปีที่แล้ว +9

It is difficult to study scripture, but it is essential to learn who God is. He is forgiving to us, believers who trust Him only, not ourselves. In 29:19 it is the man who is stubborn and blesses himself. This is a picture of a person who is rebellious. We need to trust God only, not selves. God loves us to the point He sent His One and Only Son to sacrificially Love you ❤️ and die for us, once for all. That is His character, Love. That is how we as believers should try to apply our daily lives to first God, then others. It is very difficult as this world is chaotic, ungodly and more. We are called to live for God. I may fail every day, but I know God is beside me helping me every step of the way. He is my joy and salvation. Pray.

Anyone who chooses to “be grafted in” is a member of the family, adopted into spiritual Israel. This country was founded on His principles. Our laws were modeled after His laws. As we move away from those principles we can see the curses occurring, but the wonderful principle of returning (repenting) & going back the other way still applies. I hope that everyone will begin to see that these things come in order to turn us back to Him so that He may again bless His children. Adopted children are under “house rules” the same as the natural children.
