If you mention Pathé Unlimited you should also check Cineville. They have also a subscription model for 44 independent theaters across the Netherlands that are more in the arthouse genre. Same pricing but different kind of movies and highly recommended.
I have both, but I end up going to the Pathé like 50 times a year and the art house like 2. But I like supporting the art house cinemas, so I haven’t dropped the subscription yet.
I can definitely recommend a Cinneville pass as well. But please keep in mind these arthouse cinemas are very different from the big "Pathe" cinemas. They will most likely not sell popcorn or anything (You might be able to get a packet of crisps or something). Most of the time it's more like a cafe that's inside the cinema bulding where you can get drinks to take with you in to the movie theater. These drinks will be normal sized cafe drinks as well. So no big cups of soda. Most of these cafes do come with the benefit of selling craft beer and prestige wines though, so it's not all bad to be fair.
Sidenote: For most movies arthouse cinemas won't have assigned seating either. Finally, it's not just arthouse movies some blockbuster movies will be shown as well. Finally finally, beware that there will be a focus on European films.
I love the assigned seating, when you reserve in time you can sit on the exact seats you like and you know beforehand that you won’t have to stress about being there in time etc. Some cinemas like Euroscoop, however, work without the seating system :)
I have a friend in the US who loves going to the movies. She's always bragging to me about how they serve about 40 craft beers there. So being able to buy alcohol at cinemas in the US is not as unheard of as you might think it is ;) And about the assigned seating.. If the movie is starting you can just feel free to move seats if there is space and you feel unhappy about your spot. As long as nobody comes in and claims the seat it shouldn't be a problem.
@@JoviesHome Yeah, in the last two to three years theaters that sell alcohol have gotten much more common. In addition, subsription services for movie theater chains are also available. (Side note: "Netflix and chill" has a certain... connotation that has nothing to do with watching movies 🤣)
@11:20 I think the reason for assigned seating is that you can buy your tickets online nowadays. Online you can choose were you want to sit. Assigned seating is something from the last couple of years, it used to be a free choice.
Went to the movies in Thailand, there was a video of theThai royal family played before the movie and they also played their national anthem. People around us stood up when it started playing, it was a very interesting experience.
One notable difference that I remember, if it is still the case, is that in The Netherlands movies in the theaters have a break midway through the movie, an intermezzo, whatever you want to call it. The movie would stop for 20 minutes, you'd have the option to leave the theater and get a drink, in what felt more like a bar, a cafe, rather than a concession stand. If you think of going to the movies with a date, the movies are pretty unsociable but during that intermezzo you can chat up your date. The biggest thing that I miss is that in the US the theaters are all in suburbs, like close to a mall, with not much else to do in the nearby surroundings. I remember as a kid in Holland going into the down town area of Rotterdam to shop, eat and drink, see what's going on in the city and we would take a break for a few hours and catch a matinee movie, The theaters were right there in the middle of "Hoogstraat", so you could incorporated, in a very natural feeling way, into the day's activities. Jovie, you are more familiar with Den Haag, so lets see, we would take the train to Den Haag and we could easily walk from the station to De Promenade area (even though it is a few kilometers). At De Promenade we would walk all the surrounding streets, checking out our favorite record stores, our favorite clothing boutiques, some cafes for lets say a plate of poffertjes in the afternoon, or a croquette or a frikandel, go into some bars, see what bands are playing on the weekend and meet some people "Den Haagers", who were strangers to us, walk to the glass ceiling covered streets of the promenade, those streets have strange, interesting noise echos because the streets are enclosed, and around 2:30-3:00PM we would get tired of walking and want a break, go to the movies. Three or four movie theaters were right there intertwined in the shopping streets. Much different from the big box buildings with 4 miles of parking lot around it in the US. No cultural feel, no social experience. I could do on conveying differences but this is getting long. Sorry about the long winded comment.
The break in the middle is only at one of the major cinema chains (called vue nowadays, used to be jt ), not at the pathe, and usually at smaller cinemas. Feel like it's not 20 minutes, more like just enough time to go to the toilet and have a small chat. When I was little we used to go to this cinema at popular times where it was absolutely packed with families, and the break was a mad rush to/wait at the toilets, because there were only a couple toilets and a lot of kids would need to pee..
Having grown up in the 50s American West I miss the drive-in's and that big barrel of buttered popcorn scattered all over the car floor (not to mention the 3 for a quarter candy bars we snuck in from Sav-On's). Nowadays the mall cinemas are lovely too though. I liked the dollar Tuesdays. The first time I went to the movies at Tuschinski's in Amsterdam, my jaw dropped because it was like attending a plush red carpet gala event. Yes, I like that they serve wine and beer there too. The concession stand is much too expensive though! I loved the open air 'walk in' theaters in Greece. These days though I just lounge on the couch in my p.j.s with my two pups and enjoy a good video on my laptop together. 💖
About the assigned seats : It depends a little bit on the movie and the theatre. However, when you buy your tickets online it is often possible to choose your seat. Personally I like to be in the back. I find it convenient, actually.

They sell alcohol at the theater in the states now..we have same mind of card here too. AMC theaters have a card like that. I wish the theaters had that candy station in them. I love the movies but cheaper to Disney plus at home.
Yeah, alcohol in the theater has been a thing in my US city for YEARS! Started with a smallish independent chain and now most places do it. Movie subscriptions are rarer, but not unheard of. Also most foreign language movies are subbed, not dubbed. I don't really experience much difference TBH.

Recently, where I live here in 🇨🇦, they have started selling alcohol in the movie theatre. Of course, like all food and beverages sold at the theatre it is super expensive. I have a family member who works at the theatre, and she says that when they are cleaning the theatre after the movie they always find discarded alcohol cans and bottles that people have brought in from home.

We always go to a smaller movietheater just to avoid the asigned seating and.... you have a waiter at your booth by the push of a button very cool. Only downside you might have to wait just a little longer until the more popular movies arrive there.
My enduring memory of Cinemas in the UK during the 60's is the smell of onions from the hot dogs every cinema sold back then, even the London West End ones, that also had bars where one could have a drink before, during the intermission or after. One could preorder drinks for the intermission to avoid the stampede just like in a Theater. Allocated seating is great if one books in advance, one doesn't have to gamble on getting a good seat or seats together if the movie is a popular one.
To which Pathé theater did you went? The theaters I visited, you can choose on which seat you wanted to sit at the register or at the selfservice machines. Or even more convenient with the app then you also collect point for discount or goodies.
There are movie theaters that do have hot popcorn and there are also theaters that don't have assigned seating. At least, they did like 5 years ago, which is the last time I actually went to the movies.
Los Angeles resident here. Alcohol and assigned seating are available. Most movie theaters are assigned seating only with the exception of really old theaters. Currently AMC movie theaters have a monthly membership where you can watch up to 3 movies a week. It includes any type of movie (Imax, 3D, Dolby Sound, etc.).
When I was recently in the US this summer, I could get alcoholic drinks and pick my seat ahead of time. My family there actually says it has cut down on their spontaneous movie-going as seats are booked or only single seats in random spots. There was also the unlimited MoviePass (unlimited movies) but I believe it was recently stopped by the theaters and now they have limits.

Assigned seating isn't as common in movie theatres in the Netherlands. I usually can sit wherever I like. They usually only do that when the movie is very popular. On your ticket it usually assigns you a seat, but if the theatre is not completely packed it is quite normal to just sit where you like
American here, In Savanah, GA there was a bar that had a theater in it. It was called Mugs and Movies and it had old Jazz Club semi-circular booths. You could purchase wine coolers, beers or prepackaged cocktails. Its how I saw Interview with the Vampire in the 90's. Also, here in Anchorage there is an Adult movie theater that serves pizzeria foods , beer and cocktails. Now, its only listed as Adult because its a bar. Its called Moose Tooth Pizza. I was worried it was a rated X theater because of the business type but they only show regular movies. So, they do exist in America but they are not open to the public and you have to 21 and older to go into them.
Here in California in one of the large multiplex theaters I experienced assigned seating for the first time. It was in just one of the 12(?) theatres in this complex-the others were not assigned seating. This movie may have been an IMAX presentation, I don’t remember.
Many Dutch bring their own bag of candy to the movies. Buying candy at the supermarket is much cheaper then buying it at the cinema. If you make your reservation for a movie online, most cinema's allow you to chose the seats at a floorplan so you can take a seat at a place where you won't have the risk of someone sitting in front of you.
Hi Jovie, I am dutch and I live near the city of Uden and Wijchen. In both cities there are theaters that are "servicebioscopen". When you have taken a seat (or even during the movie) and you would like to order food and/or drinks, you can press a button and a waiter will come to you and take your order. These waiters will do their best to not desturb anyone's view. It's a really cool concept.
I have a tip for you if you go to the movies. Look up a service bioscoop (service cinema). They are usually the smaller independent movie theatres but they show the normal blockbusters. The one here in the area (in the east of the country) have a button in the chair, if you press it a waiter or waitress comes to get your order, a snack or a drink and brings it to your chair during the movie :)
They have these things that you can lay on your seat and it will raise you up so your vision won't be blocked. It's for children but anyone can use it.
In Australia we can pick our seats when buying tickets, have fresh made popcorn and the pick and mix sweets. In some theatres you can have alcohol, but not in all. Moving to Netherlands next year with my Dutch husband so looking forward to experiencing movies there!
Near everyone will buy it online like a week or more ahead (having an agenda, remember?), including seating.... Also, go by public transport to the movies, its only cheaper if you go with more than like 3-4 persons to park with the car. Pathé is very easily reached by Tram 3, 4, 6, 16, 17, 3, 4, etc, I always forget if its tram 1 or 9 that also goes by there.
In Belgium we have also alcohol and month reductions cards and we can sit where we want , but i don't get i never eat ore drink at the cinema i go for the movie not the food
I cities like The Hague, Rotterdam, Amsterdam there are huge cheap or free car parks near the main roads into the city from there you can take very frequent public transportation into the city centre. Takes less or about the same amount of time as driving and trying to find parking space.
Now it's been awhile, but I never noticed 'assigned seats 'in Pathé, Isn't it only when you order online or from a machine ? Or ?,,,, maybe I just never noticed there was a assigned number on my ticket lol,
Last year I was in Berlin and it really shocked me that in the entire city, there is only ONE cinema that showed movies in their original language. For a modern western city like the capital of germany, and a huge city on top of that, its way to few in my opinion. And as a Dutchie I loved groing up seeing all these great movies in their original language, hearing the original actors. Plus it really helps with skill in English as well. Exeptions are always a thing, but in general people in the Netherlands speak English much more comfortably than people from France and Germany and I really think that watching TV and movies from young age in their original form helps with that,
I have lived in the States too and the popcorn was so off putting! The weird flavors like cheese and ranch. I'm a sweet popcorn kinda gal. But Pathé does serve hot popcorn and you smell it right when you enter. It is popped on site and kept in warmers. Maybe it depends on the specific cinema?
In New York City, we have alcohol served at your seat in several cinemas. And the Alamo Drafthouse chain throughout the U.S. does it at all their locations. Also, several cinema chains in the U.S. now have assigned seats and unlimited cards. At the counters, they have monitors so you can pick your seats if you don’t pre-purchase on their app.
Hi Jovie , Have you ever been to the Filmhuis (also in the center) for independent films ? Or re-runs of commercial hits. But there is also a restaurant connected to it (in the same building) where you can buy a combination ticket for food & film . Cheaper than independent restaurants and cinemas . And the Filmhuis also has a cosy coffeeshop and sometimes the director or members of the cast are there to discuss the films before or afterwards of the screening. And there is also the 'Movies that Matter' season, with films on subjects regarding human rights etc. ?

Once a film called "War Don Don" aired at that festival and my husband had an unexpected cameo in it (from when we worked in Sierra Leone)! Hi jovie. I have been to two movie theaters in the states. One was in New York city. I was amazed how big it was. 8 or 9 escalators up. Soooo many movies to choose. I did find the experience of that theater reminding me of the 'old' movie theater. Sadly that one doesn't exists anymore. It was a beautiful old building in the centre of Haarlem. Dating from 1925. The lighting, decor it's so different now with Pathe or Cineworld. Those are almost all new venues. The choice of sweets or drinks I found to be very limited. And strange you couldn't get a beer. The other movie theater I went to was in a small town in NH. this was really going back to the 80's. Even the movie intro was new then. That place was just old and had even fewer condiments. A box of reese's and oversized popcorn. What struck me the most was that the seats where not that clean. And I did not like the fact that you could sit just anywhere. Some how made it less special or something. I have also been to movie theaters in London (UK)and Gent (Belgium) Both quite similar to the Netherlands. And all the European ones had a student discount option. I'm not sure the US has that. Like your videos. 👍🏽
I love assigned seating! I like to sit in the back row somewhere in the middle, so I can select those seats when I buy tickets online. If there was a free choice for seating I would always have to show up really early or get stuck somewhere way too close to the screen...
Recently went to see doctor sleep. I do find the automatic pick your seat system a bit annoying but it's also getting really popular in the states so I'm getting used to it. Just means it's harder to be spontaneous in movie picks. I will say that I love how cheap the candy/drinks here are in comparison to NYC. Went with my SOs sister and just paid for snacks and drinks without the usual internal dread.
For children movies like Frozen, they have 2 versions. In Dutch version and in original with subtitles. Here you have where you can get hot popcorn. It depends on what cinema you go. But you see it less the last few years.
Being in a major city in Belgium we have 2 main stream chains of movie theatres: Kinepolis and UGC. Both do not offer alcohol IN the theatre but do in the theatre bar. No warm popcorn but they do offer warm nachos with cheese-, salsa- and or chili-sauce. 1 chain offers designated seating and at the other you can sit on whatever available seat. For a good seating just come early :-) And.. they offer for an extra charge even loveseats. No not for hanky-panky but to just snuggle up to each other as the seats are joined! Yes kissing is allowed as long you are not disturbing the movie experience for other people ;-) At one chain (UGC in the city center) there is paid parking with discounts for movie-goers. At the other (Kinepolis at the edge of Antwerpen) there is free parking! BTW I spent the last few days in Delft for my job. Stayed in a hotel. What f***ing expensive parking in major cities in the Netherlands has become! 30 Euro per day in a residential area!! Not in the city center and not in a garage.. just on the road-side! WOWWWW...

I have an unlimited card. Unless the film is sold out, or very busy, I just get a ticket and go sit wherever I please. Never had an issue with anyone over it. And if it's busy but not sold out, I start in my assigned seat but often switch seats just after the film started.
Tbh, it has been a long time (many years to be exact) since I've been to Pathé or any other movie theatre but I can't remember being assigned a seat, we could always sit where we want. Perhaps its a relatively new thing.

Not sure if someone else already said it already but you CAN now (in the last 5 years) buy alcoholic drinks in theatres. Some theatre’s now have full bars in them :-)
In Pathe for over 50 nights they didn't used to have assigned seating...it was always funny watching the usually organised Dutch having a free choice of where to sit. I loved the Pathe Unlimited card and some weekends I would see 4 different films, in The Hague you are so lucky having so much choice with the 3 main Paths cinemas. Thank you for this video....I miss the chorus of popping Grolsch beer bottle tops at the start of a film!

Hello :) In NL you can drink from age 18; in the USA from 21. I don't like horror movies either, comedy or detective movies are my favorite too. And maybe a typical "romantic comedy" :) The theatres are using projectors (I think) and it costs around 11 Euro for a regular ticket. If it's IMAX or 3D then it costs more.
Our theater pleasure is M&M's. BTW, this is usually only at the big chains like Pathé. We go a lot to small independent movie theaters for watching movies. They don't have this. What I also love is watching opera of big classic music concerts from London or New York on the big screen in the theater. BTW the Pathé in Amersfoort you can have also discounted parking. But this is onlty for parking garages. When you park along the street, you're on your own. This is relatively cheap though.
Your hair looks great!❤ You can buy alcoholic beverages and also have meals delivered to your seats, and the food is pretty good! There is also the traditional option, coke, popcorn, nachos and candy etc. you purchase in the lobby. We have assigned seating at some theaters but you can choose your seats at both the electronic kiosks or at the ticket counter. There are also special promotions for discounted tickets on certain days as well as senior and student tickets. We also have a series of kids movies during the day in the summer. There is usually free parking or you can stamp your ticket so you do not have to pay for parking. Hope you have a lovely day!

I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There is a theater, Rosebud Cinema, in neighboring Wauwatosa where you can get beer, wine or mixed drinks. They also serve pizza and appetizers. And they have big comfy chairs to sit in. If you ever find yourself in Milwaukee, I'd love to take you out to a movie there.
lol in England we have a bar (the light cinemas) in the cinema like outside the screens not just downstairs in the entrance, taking your cocktail in or gin.. woo... then needing the bathroom every 5 mins but thats besides the point. Also unlimited cards are the norm here, and pretty much most things said are similiar. :) the pick and mix isn't usually as good though p.s love your videos, i move in January :)
Get the Pathe app. That way you can order your tickets online a few day before you go. You can choose where you want to sit. If you order the tickets on the day your going at the cinema most good seat will be taken.
Probably the biggest difference is the option to buy a whole meal in movies outside of the Netherlands. You can get a whole menu with fries, hamburgers or even a steaks. In Beijing, rice, chicken or even soup are sold at movies.

I remember going to the movies and maybe ordering a drink, but that's it. Then again, I've never been a...snacker? 11:18 Really? Maybe I've never noticed because I don't sit in a chair anyway, but I never knew you would get a ticket for a specific seat. 11:40 I believe I always went about halfway down the slope. 14:59 I haven't been to the movies in forever! Actually...I also haven't tried Netflix, which might change soon because some family members who live here now do watch Netflix.
Interesting to know the Netherlands keep the original audio and put subtitles - Italy, by comparison, has a long and rich history of voiceovers, with talented voice actors that sometimes even improve some movies.
Pathé Spui in The Hague is a great cinema especially now that they have Laser IMAX. I personally think it's great that you can reserve your seat online also because I always like to have the same seat every time I go. And because you already pay for you ticket online when making resevations, it doesn't matter how late you arrive, your seat will always be waiting for you.
Yeah, alcohol has been in most US theaters for the past 5-7 years. Some even do mixed drinks. But it sounds like a great lot of fun to go to a Dutch cinema! I really like the idea of showing shows in their own language and having subtitles! I can see that as a great way to learn new languages and see wonderful movies from all over! It's hard to find a cinema here that shows foreign movies, and I typically enjoy them very much!
Since you are such a fan of the big screen, and living in the Hague, i guess you have heard of “Omniversum”. Theo show wonderfull short nature inspired movies on a almost 360-screen. It’s an amazing experience for you and your kids. It’s like you are part of the movie. Another special movie theater is in Amsterdam. It’s a 4D experience and it’s called “This is Holland”. It’s a combination of a thrillride and a movietheater. It gives you the sensation of flying like a bird over all of the Netherlands.
You was talking about the seat arrangement in the cinema's. If you are in the cinema and it is not busy you can just sit wherever you want. No one checks it then.
I lived in the US over the last 3 years and they had something like moviepass. It's out of business now but I paid 9,95 dollars a month could go one watch a movie a day in the theaters.
If you are not happy with your assigned seat you can move seats as soon as the film starts. If people come in late they're chosen seats are not reserved anymore.
My 9 year old watched this with me and said the slushies in the USA taste like chemicals and she loves the ones in the NL better but we only have one cinema in Den Bosch with reclining seats - which seams to be the norm now in the USA :) . I had the unlimited card for the VUE for 3 months for my birthday present but the movies do not open until after 2 most days so you don't get to go early. In Dublin, I could see a film while the kids were still in school - so it was great! But now you can't make pick up time :) Hiring a sitter, etc makes it not worth it. Better going on a Tuesday when all tickets are 6 euro might be okay.. My kids and I always get seats in the top row middle, so never a problem seeing and you are never going have an issue with others behind you .
Hi Jovie! I don’t really like the Pathé cinema’s. I know a lot of people do, but I am ine of thise people that actually like a break during the movie. Just to have a bathroom break, get some more to drink/eat and just kinda let te part I’ve seen so far, sink in a little bit. At Pathé, personally I feel like stepping into a moviefactory. Get in, buy your food and drink, watch the movie, leave..... We always love to go to the VUE cinemas. Feels like there’s more of a ‘cozy’ ‘gezellige’ ambiance. Also, our Vue has the adjustable seats, so you can choose how you want to sit/hang/lay while watching the movie, and, since these chairs take up more space, there are less seats, which means, the space in front of you ( and obviously behind you) is bigger, so you’re never stuck anymore, behind someone who’s tall. And you’re never too close, within someone elses personal space... I really like that!! My VUE that has this, is in Amersfoort. But I’m sure there’s more Vues with these seats. However, only go to VUE, if you do like a break during your movie.....😊😊
It isn't assigned seating, well you do choose a seat but you can actually sit everywhere. but indeed some peaple make an issue about it (but if it isn't busy that doesn't matter)
Well of course it is assigned seating and you can not sit anywhere you want. With online booking, with special seats like comfort seats (called cosy seats here at Kinepolis in Utrecht) you put in quite the effort to choose a nice seating arrangement, just like with online booking of a flight. If it is free choice of seating they'll tell you upfront. But when the film is playing you can stand up and find a seat you prefer better, if half of the room is empty. Until some late comers come and claim their reserved seats of course :-D
That's why i have reservation when i go to the movies. Always choose the same spot at the movietheater in my town i can order my drinks and snacks during the movie. Love it! And parking is free.
But what happens if someone very tall (or noisy or rude or on the phone, etc) sits in front of/beside you. Are you free to move seats in that case? AHH So many comments about FREE Parking in your cities!! This is unheard of in The Hague. I'm just a weeeeee bit jealous lol. Thanks for watching!
There are more theatres in the US that have 21+ sections where you can get alcohol now. More and more theatres have assigned seating in the US now too.
The last time I went to a movie was last year, in Hilversum. I like it but I never went often, not even when I was young. In those days it was relatively more expensive if I remember it well. In the afternoon sometimes the seats are free to choose. I prefer going in the afternoon. Did it happen a lot that there was a tall Dutch person in front of you, blocking your view? The rows in the theatres I was in were rather steep. (I am Dutch but not tall, yes, it does exist 😊 ) And about subtitles: I am so used to reading subtitles that I read them, even when the people on the screen speak Dutch and I can understand them very well. And about hot popcorn: I didn't know that existed.
Hi Jovie, in Belgium we don't have the monthly tickets, I would love to have the because now we pay €10 per person and i find it kind of expencive. Here they sell alcohol to, why don't they do in America?
Hey! I live in a small village in the Eastern part of the Netherlands and we have a very nice old fashioned movie theater that still sells fresh AND HOT (L) popcorn! They even have phones in front of your seat so you can call the bar to bring you some snacks or drinks!
Here in Cambodia they also have sweet/salt popcorn. I think that that's normal outside of the US/Canada. Assigned seating seems to be a thing in every country i've been to except Canada/US. I prefer having that(no need to be looking everywhere for an empty seat in a crowded cinema),but I understand your reasoning.
My experience of American movie theatres stems from the early '80, but to me the main difference is the audience. In the US people react way more directly/loudly to the movie. They cheer, they boo. It's really nice until the reactions become so load that you can't hear the movie anymore (which happened to me watching The Blues Brothers) and since there aren't any subtitles, you're really missing out. All in all a totally different experience. I liked it
I hate the smell of popcorn! At first that is, but I got accustomed to it and I like it to have a snack and a drink while looking at a movie. I have nachos with a cheese dip though. These large movie theaters are not that long in the Netherlands and I remember me whole different experiences in very different theatres all over the world, but also in the Netherlands. In Nederlands Indië, and I think in a lot of other places even today I remember a theater in the open air, with places in front and in the back of the screen. The public was very enthousiastic and loud which gave extra dimension to the Tarzan film. The same experience with a lively public I had during the Starwars film: the Clone Wars, where Anakin and Padme had an intimate encounter: "Zoenen, zoenen, zoenen!" and during the fight of Yoda and Count Doku "Jaa! Huphup! Sla d'r op" and applause for Yoda. This was in Curacao. In the Netherlands in the small movie theatres of Delft the students were very helpfull for the operator: "Scherper! scherper! Ja zo.. nee teveel, ja goed" And in Amsterdam you have to go to Tuschinsky, the most beautiful theater I know. I have seen it in the old days, there was a variaté before the movie of acrobats and other artists, not anymore but it is fully restaurated in the Art Deco and Jugenstil of those days.

Hmm....... assigned seating, never experienced that though. Well at least certain cinema's i visit anyway, which are mostly in the north-east of the Netherlands. And for example Smoky in Stadskanaal, i love the convenience. Sitting down, watching a movie and pressing a button to order some drinks and snacks when i feel like it.
You really need to try out a few different movie theaters instead of just Pathe, and you will also have totally different experiences. The signed seating is probably typically a Pathe thing. The cinema I go to doesn't have it. You can sit wherever you want in the huge halls that are often half empty. It also doesn't have the candy set up you describe. And the parking is much cheaper with the parking garage right under the movie theatre. And maybe try out a service bioscoop? Where they serve you food and drinks at your seat. And you can order a large popcorn here too. Getting stuck behind a tall Dutch guy won't happen where I go, as the seats in front of you are also much lower.
I actually really like the assigned seats systems because i'm able to order tickets 2 days ahead and choose the middle seats in the middle row (my preference) instead of going to the movies and finding out all the good spots are taken (i usually arrive a bit late :'). But then again i'm quite tall so i don't have any problems with someone sitting in front of me and not being able to see the screen. So i do get where you're coming from!
Hmmmm, going to the movies for popcorn or for the film? I am too old to understand I guess, but it feels like many people have been weaned off their bib too early and still have mouth cravings.
I've got two small children too, but recently been able to go to the movies with my wife again and have my parents in law babysit. We go to the VU in Hilversum, and they do have hot popcorn there, but it does not have a smell saturating the whole theatre. Sugar by the way is not the cause of type 2 diabetes, it's only a problem if you already have diabetes. The cause are mainly saturated fats and transfats. Basically most processed foods. It is the food that causes blood plaque, which blocks the entrance ways to the muscle tissue, which creates a rise in both insulin and blood glycogen. Look upon it like a blocked sink, it's not the water that causes the issues, but the chunks of food. So not adding more water will help to not flood the sink, but it's not the cause.
Ahh the joy of free babysitting by grandparents! And so nice to be able to date your spouse once in a while :) In my pregnancies there was a direct link between my blood sugar levels and anything eating anything sweet/carb-y (even fruit or foods that are generally considered "healthy"). Checking my levels so much over the two pregnancies really gave me insight into how my own body reacts to different foods. Although it may be different now that I'm not pregnant. But I'm *trying* to take care of myself as best as I can. Could you hear the sound quality here? I LOVE our new mics!! But I have to be super careful not to touch them because they're so good they even pick up on that noise...(thank you thank you thank you thank you)

There's a facebook page of professionals showing how they place their mics, could be interesting. As for your diabetic problems during your pregnancy. The difference is in looking at symptoms or the cause. Sure the symptom is high blood sugar and that will not be helped by adding more, even normally healthy 'sugars', and in case of pregnancy it will be the hormones that are in imbalance that make the symptoms worse enough to really show. But the cause is not the sugar. The thing with high blood pressure/diabetes is that it is rather cholesterol/blood lipids based, that's the root cause, the hormones can just help it over the trigger point of becoming noticeable and/or problematic. It is a bit of the canary in the colemine though, you should watch out with too much processed foods that will pump more lipids in to your bloodstream. I know it is not the most popular choice of food for most, but less meat/eggs/dairy will IMMENSELY help resolve these kinds of issues, and more whole foods. But trust me, it's been tested for almost a century, it's not sugar that causes it, it's just making symptoms worse.
If you mention Pathé Unlimited you should also check Cineville. They have also a subscription model for 44 independent theaters across the Netherlands that are more in the arthouse genre. Same pricing but different kind of movies and highly recommended.

I have both, but I end up going to the Pathé like 50 times a year and the art house like 2. But I like supporting the art house cinemas, so I haven’t dropped the subscription yet.

I can definitely recommend a Cinneville pass as well. But please keep in mind these arthouse cinemas are very different from the big "Pathe" cinemas. They will most likely not sell popcorn or anything (You might be able to get a packet of crisps or something). Most of the time it's more like a cafe that's inside the cinema bulding where you can get drinks to take with you in to the movie theater. These drinks will be normal sized cafe drinks as well. So no big cups of soda. Most of these cafes do come with the benefit of selling craft beer and prestige wines though, so it's not all bad to be fair.
Sidenote: For most movies arthouse cinemas won't have assigned seating either. Finally, it's not just arthouse movies some blockbuster movies will be shown as well. Finally finally, beware that there will be a focus on European films.
I love the assigned seating, when you reserve in time you can sit on the exact seats you like and you know beforehand that you won’t have to stress about being there in time etc. Some cinemas like Euroscoop, however, work without the seating system :)
I have a friend in the US who loves going to the movies. She's always bragging to me about how they serve about 40 craft beers there. So being able to buy alcohol at cinemas in the US is not as unheard of as you might think it is ;)
And about the assigned seating.. If the movie is starting you can just feel free to move seats if there is space and you feel unhappy about your spot. As long as nobody comes in and claims the seat it shouldn't be a problem.

@11:20 I think the reason for assigned seating is that you can buy your tickets online nowadays. Online you can choose were you want to sit. Assigned seating is something from the last couple of years, it used to be a free choice.
It's been there for ages.
Went to the movies in Thailand, there was a video of theThai royal family played before the movie and they also played their national anthem. People around us stood up when it started playing, it was a very interesting experience.
One notable difference that I remember, if it is still the case, is that in The Netherlands movies in the theaters have a break midway through the movie, an intermezzo, whatever you want to call it. The movie would stop for 20 minutes, you'd have the option to leave the theater and get a drink, in what felt more like a bar, a cafe, rather than a concession stand. If you think of going to the movies with a date, the movies are pretty unsociable but during that intermezzo you can chat up your date.
The biggest thing that I miss is that in the US the theaters are all in suburbs, like close to a mall, with not much else to do in the nearby surroundings. I remember as a kid in Holland going into the down town area of Rotterdam to shop, eat and drink, see what's going on in the city and we would take a break for a few hours and catch a matinee movie, The theaters were right there in the middle of "Hoogstraat", so you could incorporated, in a very natural feeling way, into the day's activities. Jovie, you are more familiar with Den Haag, so lets see, we would take the train to Den Haag and we could easily walk from the station to De Promenade area (even though it is a few kilometers). At De Promenade we would walk all the surrounding streets, checking out our favorite record stores, our favorite clothing boutiques, some cafes for lets say a plate of poffertjes in the afternoon, or a croquette or a frikandel, go into some bars, see what bands are playing on the weekend and meet some people "Den Haagers", who were strangers to us, walk to the glass ceiling covered streets of the promenade, those streets have strange, interesting noise echos because the streets are enclosed, and around 2:30-3:00PM we would get tired of walking and want a break, go to the movies. Three or four movie theaters were right there intertwined in the shopping streets. Much different from the big box buildings with 4 miles of parking lot around it in the US. No cultural feel, no social experience. I could do on conveying differences but this is getting long.

The break in the middle is only at one of the major cinema chains (called vue nowadays, used to be jt ), not at the pathe, and usually at smaller cinemas. Feel like it's not 20 minutes, more like just enough time to go to the toilet and have a small chat.
When I was little we used to go to this cinema at popular times where it was absolutely packed with families, and the break was a mad rush to/wait at the toilets, because there were only a couple toilets and a lot of kids would need to pee..
I'm dutch,but I hate eating and drinking in the cinema. Smell, noises eating etc.

I'm okay with popcorn and just non smelly soft drinks, water, coffee and tea, but sitting next to someone who has nachos is noooot nice.

Having grown up in the 50s American West I miss the drive-in's and that big barrel of buttered popcorn scattered all over the car floor (not to mention the 3 for a quarter candy bars we snuck in from Sav-On's). Nowadays the mall cinemas are lovely too though. I liked the dollar Tuesdays. The first time I went to the movies at Tuschinski's in Amsterdam, my jaw dropped because it was like attending a plush red carpet gala event. Yes, I like that they serve wine and beer there too. The concession stand is much too expensive though! I loved the open air 'walk in' theaters in Greece. These days though I just lounge on the couch in my p.j.s with my two pups and enjoy a good video on my laptop together. 💖
About the assigned seats : It depends a little bit on the movie and the theatre. However, when you buy your tickets online it is often possible to choose your seat. Personally I like to be in the back. I find it convenient, actually.

They sell alcohol at the theater in the states now..we have same mind of card here too. AMC theaters have a card like that. I wish the theaters had that candy station in them. I love the movies but cheaper to Disney plus at home.
Yeah, alcohol in the theater has been a thing in my US city for YEARS! Started with a smallish independent chain and now most places do it. Movie subscriptions are rarer, but not unheard of. Also most foreign language movies are subbed, not dubbed. I don't really experience much difference TBH.

Recently, where I live here in 🇨🇦, they have started selling alcohol in the movie theatre. Of course, like all food and beverages sold at the theatre it is super expensive. I have a family member who works at the theatre, and she says that when they are cleaning the theatre after the movie they always find discarded alcohol cans and bottles that people have brought in from home.

We always go to a smaller movietheater just to avoid the asigned seating and.... you have a waiter at your booth by the push of a button very cool. Only downside you might have to wait just a little longer until the more popular movies arrive there.

My enduring memory of Cinemas in the UK during the 60's is the smell of onions from the hot dogs every cinema sold back then, even the London West End ones, that also had bars where one could have a drink before, during the intermission or after. One could preorder drinks for the intermission to avoid the stampede just like in a Theater. Allocated seating is great if one books in advance, one doesn't have to gamble on getting a good seat or seats together if the movie is a popular one.
To which Pathé theater did you went? The theaters I visited, you can choose on which seat you wanted to sit at the register or at the selfservice machines. Or even more convenient with the app then you also collect point for discount or goodies.
There are movie theaters that do have hot popcorn and there are also theaters that don't have assigned seating. At least, they did like 5 years ago, which is the last time I actually went to the movies.
Los Angeles resident here. Alcohol and assigned seating are available. Most movie theaters are assigned seating only with the exception of really old theaters. Currently AMC movie theaters have a monthly membership where you can watch up to 3 movies a week. It includes any type of movie (Imax, 3D, Dolby Sound, etc.).
When I was recently in the US this summer, I could get alcoholic drinks and pick my seat ahead of time. My family there actually says it has cut down on their spontaneous movie-going as seats are booked or only single seats in random spots. There was also the unlimited MoviePass (unlimited movies) but I believe it was recently stopped by the theaters and now they have limits.

Assigned seating isn't as common in movie theatres in the Netherlands. I usually can sit wherever I like. They usually only do that when the movie is very popular. On your ticket it usually assigns you a seat, but if the theatre is not completely packed it is quite normal to just sit where you like
American here, In Savanah, GA there was a bar that had a theater in it. It was called Mugs and Movies and it had old Jazz Club semi-circular booths. You could purchase wine coolers, beers or prepackaged cocktails. Its how I saw Interview with the Vampire in the 90's. Also, here in Anchorage there is an Adult movie theater that serves pizzeria foods , beer and cocktails. Now, its only listed as Adult because its a bar. Its called Moose Tooth Pizza. I was worried it was a rated X theater because of the business type but they only show regular movies. So, they do exist in America but they are not open to the public and you have to 21 and older to go into them.
Here in California in one of the large multiplex theaters I experienced assigned seating for the first time. It was in just one of the 12(?) theatres in this complex-the others were not assigned seating. This movie may have been an IMAX presentation, I don’t remember.
I have never had assigned seating in the movie theatre in the Netherlands (I only have assigned seating when I go to the theatre to watch a play).
Many Dutch bring their own bag of candy to the movies. Buying candy at the supermarket is much cheaper then buying it at the cinema.
If you make your reservation for a movie online, most cinema's allow you to chose the seats at a floorplan so you can take a seat at a place where you won't have the risk of someone sitting in front of you.
Hi Jovie, I am dutch and I live near the city of Uden and Wijchen. In both cities there are theaters that are "servicebioscopen". When you have taken a seat (or even during the movie) and you would like to order food and/or drinks, you can press a button and a waiter will come to you and take your order. These waiters will do their best to not desturb anyone's view. It's a really cool concept.

I have a tip for you if you go to the movies. Look up a service bioscoop (service cinema). They are usually the smaller independent movie theatres but they show the normal blockbusters. The one here in the area (in the east of the country) have a button in the chair, if you press it a waiter or waitress comes to get your order, a snack or a drink and brings it to your chair during the movie :)
They have these things that you can lay on your seat and it will raise you up so your vision won't be blocked. It's for children but anyone can use it.
If you buy your ticket at the counter, you can also say where you want to sit. I love the assigned seating..
In Australia we can pick our seats when buying tickets, have fresh made popcorn and the pick and mix sweets. In some theatres you can have alcohol, but not in all.

Near everyone will buy it online like a week or more ahead (having an agenda, remember?), including seating....
Also, go by public transport to the movies, its only cheaper if you go with more than like 3-4 persons to park with the car. Pathé is very easily reached by Tram 3, 4, 6, 16, 17, 3, 4, etc, I always forget if its tram 1 or 9 that also goes by there.
In Belgium we have also alcohol and month reductions cards and we can sit where we want , but i don't get i never eat ore drink at the cinema i go for the movie not the food
I cities like The Hague, Rotterdam, Amsterdam there are huge cheap or free car parks near the main roads into the city from there you can take very frequent public transportation into the city centre. Takes less or about the same amount of time as driving and trying to find parking space.
Now it's been awhile, but I never noticed 'assigned seats 'in Pathé, Isn't it only when you order online or from a machine ? Or ?,,,, maybe I just never noticed there was a assigned number on my ticket lol,
Last year I was in Berlin and it really shocked me that in the entire city, there is only ONE cinema that showed movies in their original language. For a modern western city like the capital of germany, and a huge city on top of that, its way to few in my opinion. And as a Dutchie I loved groing up seeing all these great movies in their original language, hearing the original actors. Plus it really helps with skill in English as well. Exeptions are always a thing, but in general people in the Netherlands speak English much more comfortably than people from France and Germany and I really think that watching TV and movies from young age in their original form helps with that,
I have lived in the States too and the popcorn was so off putting! The weird flavors like cheese and ranch. I'm a sweet popcorn kinda gal. But Pathé does serve hot popcorn and you smell it right when you enter. It is popped on site and kept in warmers. Maybe it depends on the specific cinema?
In New York City, we have alcohol served at your seat in several cinemas. And the Alamo Drafthouse chain throughout the U.S. does it at all their locations. Also, several cinema chains in the U.S. now have assigned seats and unlimited cards. At the counters, they have monitors so you can pick your seats if you don’t pre-purchase on their app.

Hi Jovie , Have you ever been to the Filmhuis (also in the center) for independent films ? Or re-runs of commercial hits. But there is also a restaurant connected to it (in the same building) where you can buy a combination ticket for food & film . Cheaper than independent restaurants and cinemas . And the Filmhuis also has a cosy coffeeshop and sometimes the director or members of the cast are there to discuss the films before or afterwards of the screening. And there is also the 'Movies that Matter' season, with films on subjects regarding human rights etc. ?

Once a film called "War Don Don" aired at that festival and my husband had an unexpected cameo in it (from when we worked in Sierra Leone)! Will have to go there again eventually when we have grandparents visiting so they can babysit ;)

I have been to two movie theaters in the states. One was in New York city. I was amazed how big it was. 8 or 9 escalators up. Soooo many movies to choose. I did find the experience of that theater reminding me of the 'old' movie theater. Sadly that one doesn't exists anymore. It was a beautiful old building in the centre of Haarlem. Dating from 1925. The lighting, decor it's so different now with Pathe or Cineworld. Those are almost all new venues. The choice of sweets or drinks I found to be very limited. And strange you couldn't get a beer.
The other movie theater I went to was in a small town in NH. this was really going back to the 80's. Even the movie intro was new then. That place was just old and had even fewer condiments. A box of reese's and oversized popcorn. What struck me the most was that the seats where not that clean. And I did not like the fact that you could sit just anywhere. Some how made it less special or something. I have also been to movie theaters in London (UK)and Gent (Belgium) Both quite similar to the Netherlands. And all the European ones had a student discount option. I'm not sure the US has that.

You can buy alcohol in SOME movie theaters in the states. Usually at smaller ones that also offer dinner type foods, not in the big chains.

I love assigned seating! I like to sit in the back row somewhere in the middle, so I can select those seats when I buy tickets online. If there was a free choice for seating I would always have to show up really early or get stuck somewhere way too close to the screen...
Recently went to see doctor sleep. I do find the automatic pick your seat system a bit annoying but it's also getting really popular in the states so I'm getting used to it. Just means it's harder to be spontaneous in movie picks. I will say that I love how cheap the candy/drinks here are in comparison to NYC. Went with my SOs sister and just paid for snacks and drinks without the usual internal dread.
For children movies like Frozen, they have 2 versions. In Dutch version and in original with subtitles.
Here you have where you can get hot popcorn. It depends on what cinema you go. But you see it less the last few years.
Being in a major city in Belgium we have 2 main stream chains of movie theatres: Kinepolis and UGC. Both do not offer alcohol IN the theatre but do in the theatre bar. No warm popcorn but they do offer warm nachos with cheese-, salsa- and or chili-sauce. 1 chain offers designated seating and at the other you can sit on whatever available seat. For a good seating just come early :-) And.. they offer for an extra charge even loveseats. No not for hanky-panky but to just snuggle up to each other as the seats are joined! Yes kissing is allowed as long you are not disturbing the movie experience for other people ;-) At one chain (UGC in the city center) there is paid parking with discounts for movie-goers. At the other (Kinepolis at the edge of Antwerpen) there is free parking!
BTW I spent the last few days in Delft for my job. Stayed in a hotel. What f***ing expensive parking in major cities in the Netherlands has become! 30 Euro per day in a residential area!! Not in the city center and not in a garage.. just on the road-side! WOWWWW...

I have an unlimited card. Unless the film is sold out, or very busy, I just get a ticket and go sit wherever I please. Never had an issue with anyone over it.
And if it's busy but not sold out, I start in my assigned seat but often switch seats just after the film started.
Tbh, it has been a long time (many years to be exact) since I've been to Pathé or any other movie theatre but I can't remember being assigned a seat, we could always sit where we want. Perhaps its a relatively new thing.

Not sure if someone else already said it already but you CAN now (in the last 5 years) buy alcoholic drinks in theatres. Some theatre’s now have full bars in them :-)
Assigned seating is location independant. You can also go to free to sit theaters.
In Pathe for over 50 nights they didn't used to have assigned seating...it was always funny watching the usually organised Dutch having a free choice of where to sit. I loved the Pathe Unlimited card and some weekends I would see 4 different films, in The Hague you are so lucky having so much choice with the 3 main Paths cinemas. Thank you for this video....I miss the chorus of popping Grolsch beer bottle tops at the start of a film!
Hey miss jovie,what is the age limit allowed to take intoxicant in the Netherlands and the states.do you also eat when spotting horror movies...but l prefer detective movies...and how much does a one movie cost in the two countries.at the movie theatre do you use a projector or flat screen TVs.
Hello :) In NL you can drink from age 18; in the USA from 21. I don't like horror movies either, comedy or detective movies are my favorite too. And maybe a typical "romantic comedy" :) The theatres are using projectors (I think) and it costs around 11 Euro for a regular ticket. If it's IMAX or 3D then it costs more.

Our theater pleasure is M&M's. BTW, this is usually only at the big chains like Pathé. We go a lot to small independent movie theaters for watching movies. They don't have this. What I also love is watching opera of big classic music concerts from London or New York on the big screen in the theater. BTW the Pathé in Amersfoort you can have also discounted parking. But this is onlty for parking garages. When you park along the street, you're on your own. This is relatively cheap though.

You can buy alcoholic beverages and also have meals delivered to your seats, and the food is pretty good! There is also the traditional option, coke, popcorn, nachos and candy etc. you purchase in the lobby.
We have assigned seating at some theaters but you can choose your seats at both the electronic kiosks or at the ticket counter.
There are also special promotions for discounted tickets on certain days as well as senior and student tickets. We also have a series of kids movies during the day in the summer.
There is usually free parking or you can stamp your ticket so you do not have to pay for parking.

I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There is a theater, Rosebud Cinema, in neighboring Wauwatosa where you can get beer, wine or mixed drinks. They also serve pizza and appetizers. And they have big comfy chairs to sit in. If you ever find yourself in Milwaukee, I'd love to take you out to a movie there.
lol in England we have a bar (the light cinemas) in the cinema like outside the screens not just downstairs in the entrance, taking your cocktail in or gin.. woo...
then needing the bathroom every 5 mins but thats besides the point. Also unlimited cards are the norm here, and pretty much most things said are similiar. :) the pick and mix isn't usually as good though

There’s a cinema in Rosemont, Illinois where they have a bar for 21+ and you can drink and eat.
A lot of theaters in the US are starting to go the assign seating route. This is due to a lot of theaters having recliner seat.

Get the Pathe app. That way you can order your tickets online a few day before you go. You can choose where you want to sit. If you order the tickets on the day your going at the cinema most good seat will be taken.
Probably the biggest difference is the option to buy a whole meal in movies outside of the Netherlands. You can get a whole menu with fries, hamburgers or even a steaks. In Beijing, rice, chicken or even soup are sold at movies.

Interesting to know the Netherlands keep the original audio and put subtitles - Italy, by comparison, has a long and rich history of voiceovers, with talented voice actors that sometimes even improve some movies.
Pathé Spui in The Hague is a great cinema especially now that they have Laser IMAX. I personally think it's great that you can reserve your seat online also because I always like to have the same seat every time I go. And because you already pay for you ticket online when making resevations, it doesn't matter how late you arrive, your seat will always be waiting for you.
Yeah, alcohol has been in most US theaters for the past 5-7 years. Some even do mixed drinks. But it sounds like a great lot of fun to go to a Dutch cinema! I really like the idea of showing shows in their own language and having subtitles! I can see that as a great way to learn new languages and see wonderful movies from all over! It's hard to find a cinema here that shows foreign movies, and I typically enjoy them very much!
If You Wanna decide Where You Wanna sit in the Theater... you have to go to the film Theatre or to the film huis
If you like going to the movies, you just have to go to Tuschinski theater in Amsterdam . It is a art deco building. Beautiful inside and out!
Since you are such a fan of the big screen, and living in the Hague, i guess you have heard of “Omniversum”. Theo show wonderfull short nature inspired movies on a almost 360-screen. It’s an amazing experience for you and your kids. It’s like you are part of the movie.
Another special movie theater is in Amsterdam. It’s a 4D experience and it’s called “This is Holland”. It’s a combination of a thrillride and a movietheater. It gives you the sensation of flying like a bird over all of the Netherlands.

I lived in the US over the last 3 years and they had something like moviepass. It's out of business now but I paid 9,95 dollars a month could go one watch a movie a day in the theaters.
If you are not happy with your assigned seat you can move seats as soon as the film starts. If people come in late they're chosen seats are not reserved anymore.
My 9 year old watched this with me and said the slushies in the USA taste like chemicals and she loves the ones in the NL better but we only have one cinema in Den Bosch with reclining seats - which seams to be the norm now in the USA :) . I had the unlimited card for the VUE for 3 months for my birthday present but the movies do not open until after 2 most days so you don't get to go early. In Dublin, I could see a film while the kids were still in school - so it was great! But now you can't make pick up time :) Hiring a sitter, etc makes it not worth it. Better going on a Tuesday when all tickets are 6 euro might be okay.. My kids and I always get seats in the top row middle, so never a problem seeing and you are never going have an issue with others behind you .

I don’t really like the Pathé cinema’s. I know a lot of people do, but I am ine of thise people that actually like a break during the movie. Just to have a bathroom break, get some more to drink/eat and just kinda let te part I’ve seen so far, sink in a little bit. At Pathé, personally I feel like stepping into a moviefactory. Get in, buy your food and drink, watch the movie, leave..... We always love to go to the VUE cinemas. Feels like there’s more of a ‘cozy’ ‘gezellige’ ambiance. Also, our Vue has the adjustable seats, so you can choose how you want to sit/hang/lay while watching the movie, and, since these chairs take up more space, there are less seats, which means, the space in front of you ( and obviously behind you) is bigger, so you’re never stuck anymore, behind someone who’s tall. And you’re never too close, within someone elses personal space... I really like that!! My VUE that has this, is in Amersfoort. But I’m sure there’s more Vues with these seats. However, only go to VUE, if you do like a break during your movie.....😊😊
It isn't assigned seating, well you do choose a seat but you can actually sit everywhere. but indeed some peaple make an issue about it (but if it isn't busy that doesn't matter)
Well of course it is assigned seating and you can not sit anywhere you want. With online booking, with special seats like comfort seats (called cosy seats here at Kinepolis in Utrecht) you put in quite the effort to choose a nice seating arrangement, just like with online booking of a flight. If it is free choice of seating they'll tell you upfront. But when the film is playing you can stand up and find a seat you prefer better, if half of the room is empty. Until some late comers come and claim their reserved seats of course :-D
That's why i have reservation when i go to the movies. Always choose the same spot at the movietheater in my town i can order my drinks and snacks during the movie. Love it! And parking is free.
But what happens if someone very tall (or noisy or rude or on the phone, etc) sits in front of/beside you. Are you free to move seats in that case?

There are more theatres in the US that have 21+ sections where you can get alcohol now. More and more theatres have assigned seating in the US now too.

The last time I went to a movie was last year, in Hilversum. I like it but I never went often, not even when I was young. In those days it was relatively more expensive if I remember it well.
In the afternoon sometimes the seats are free to choose. I prefer going in the afternoon.
Did it happen a lot that there was a tall Dutch person in front of you, blocking your view? The rows in the theatres I was in were rather steep. (I am Dutch but not tall, yes, it does exist 😊 )
And about subtitles: I am so used to reading subtitles that I read them, even when the people on the screen speak Dutch and I can understand them very well.
And about hot popcorn: I didn't know that existed.
Hi Jovie, in Belgium we don't have the monthly tickets, I would love to have the because now we pay €10 per person and i find it kind of expencive. Here they sell alcohol to, why don't they do in America?
We often have free choice of seething in out cinema ( in the Netherlands) but it’s probably because it’s in a smaller city.
Hey! I live in a small village in the Eastern part of the Netherlands and we have a very nice old fashioned movie theater that still sells fresh AND HOT (L) popcorn! They even have phones in front of your seat so you can call the bar to bring you some snacks or drinks!
San Francisco allows sale of beer and wine at the theater (but is that really the States?) Likewise, assigned seating has become almost the norm here.
Here in Cambodia they also have sweet/salt popcorn. I think that that's normal outside of the US/Canada. Assigned seating seems to be a thing in every country i've been to except Canada/US. I prefer having that(no need to be looking everywhere for an empty seat in a crowded cinema),but I understand your reasoning.
The last time I went to the movies here in the United States, they had assigned seating.
My experience of American movie theatres stems from the early '80, but to me the main difference is the audience. In the US people react way more directly/loudly to the movie. They cheer, they boo. It's really nice until the reactions become so load that you can't hear the movie anymore (which happened to me watching The Blues Brothers) and since there aren't any subtitles, you're really missing out. All in all a totally different experience. I liked it
I hate the smell of popcorn! At first that is, but I got accustomed to it and I like it to have a snack and a drink while looking at a movie. I have nachos with a cheese dip though.
These large movie theaters are not that long in the Netherlands and I remember me whole different experiences in very different theatres all over the world, but also in the Netherlands. In Nederlands Indië, and I think in a lot of other places even today I remember a theater in the open air, with places in front and in the back of the screen. The public was very enthousiastic and loud which gave extra dimension to the Tarzan film. The same experience with a lively public I had during the Starwars film: the Clone Wars, where Anakin and Padme had an intimate encounter: "Zoenen, zoenen, zoenen!" and during the fight of Yoda and Count Doku "Jaa! Huphup! Sla d'r op" and applause for Yoda. This was in Curacao. In the Netherlands in the small movie theatres of Delft the students were very helpfull for the operator: "Scherper! scherper! Ja zo.. nee teveel, ja goed" And in Amsterdam you have to go to Tuschinsky, the most beautiful theater I know. I have seen it in the old days, there was a variaté before the movie of acrobats and other artists, not anymore but it is fully restaurated in the Art Deco and Jugenstil of those days.

The seat number thing is not every where , in Terneuzen we have also pathe’ . You only pay for the movie ,and you can sit where ever you want ,

Well at least certain cinema's i visit anyway, which are mostly in the north-east of the Netherlands.
And for example Smoky in Stadskanaal, i love the convenience.
Sitting down, watching a movie and pressing a button to order some drinks and snacks when i feel like it.
You really need to try out a few different movie theaters instead of just Pathe, and you will also have totally different experiences. The signed seating is probably typically a Pathe thing. The cinema I go to doesn't have it. You can sit wherever you want in the huge halls that are often half empty. It also doesn't have the candy set up you describe. And the parking is much cheaper with the parking garage right under the movie theatre.
And maybe try out a service bioscoop? Where they serve you food and drinks at your seat.
And you can order a large popcorn here too.
Getting stuck behind a tall Dutch guy won't happen where I go, as the seats in front of you are also much lower.
I actually really like the assigned seats systems because i'm able to order tickets 2 days ahead and choose the middle seats in the middle row (my preference) instead of going to the movies and finding out all the good spots are taken (i usually arrive a bit late :'). But then again i'm quite tall so i don't have any problems with someone sitting in front of me and not being able to see the screen. So i do get where you're coming from!
Hmmmm, going to the movies for popcorn or for the film? I am too old to understand I guess, but it feels like many people have been weaned off their bib too early and still have mouth cravings.
I've got two small children too, but recently been able to go to the movies with my wife again and have my parents in law babysit. We go to the VU in Hilversum, and they do have hot popcorn there, but it does not have a smell saturating the whole theatre. Sugar by the way is not the cause of type 2 diabetes, it's only a problem if you already have diabetes. The cause are mainly saturated fats and transfats. Basically most processed foods. It is the food that causes blood plaque, which blocks the entrance ways to the muscle tissue, which creates a rise in both insulin and blood glycogen. Look upon it like a blocked sink, it's not the water that causes the issues, but the chunks of food. So not adding more water will help to not flood the sink, but it's not the cause.
Ahh the joy of free babysitting by grandparents! And so nice to be able to date your spouse once in a while :)
In my pregnancies there was a direct link between my blood sugar levels and anything eating anything sweet/carb-y (even fruit or foods that are generally considered "healthy"). Checking my levels so much over the two pregnancies really gave me insight into how my own body reacts to different foods. Although it may be different now that I'm not pregnant. But I'm *trying* to take care of myself as best as I can.

As for your diabetic problems during your pregnancy. The difference is in looking at symptoms or the cause. Sure the symptom is high blood sugar and that will not be helped by adding more, even normally healthy 'sugars', and in case of pregnancy it will be the hormones that are in imbalance that make the symptoms worse enough to really show. But the cause is not the sugar. The thing with high blood pressure/diabetes is that it is rather cholesterol/blood lipids based, that's the root cause, the hormones can just help it over the trigger point of becoming noticeable and/or problematic. It is a bit of the canary in the colemine though, you should watch out with too much processed foods that will pump more lipids in to your bloodstream. I know it is not the most popular choice of food for most, but less meat/eggs/dairy will IMMENSELY help resolve these kinds of issues, and more whole foods. But trust me, it's been tested for almost a century, it's not sugar that causes it, it's just making symptoms worse.
