its due to the weird union rules at the time. you couldn't mime to your record on top of the pops, you had to rerecord it with musicians union staff earlier in the day and then mime to that or sing live to that. it led to some really dreadful musical accompaniments that ruined the original record - watch althea and donna do up town top ranking on top of the pops for a perfect example.

@@amosungar5248 I think they circumvented it by changing the lyrics (“dirty old man” is not in the proper release, it was changed for TOTP).
If you watch the TOTP 2 version this you'll notice that the line 'dirty old man' has been overdubbed with 'mouldy old dough'. I wonder why.
