NO! Not rubbish just DIFFERENT. You think there's not young people getting excited about music today? Have you seen people lately? They walk around with headphones on, immersed in music they choose.
I watched this performance and started to think the same thoughts as you - imagine this being played on TV today, on Top of the Pops? No way! An odd song, featuring mother and son, dressed in outlandish clothes enjoying performing what is quite an unusual song.... but then there's some really weird shit going on in the world still - a buffoon with daft hair and little or no idea what he's doing is the UK's leader! You couldn't make that up (well, you could, but you don't have to).
Back then life could be dull and horrid, but you don't really video and watch too many of those bits, you want to see the good times. Still, I look back and think it was fun to be born back then - but everyone always thinks that, don't they? It's what people do.

@@bodrod8150I don't understand what you mean by "woke". Woke is a term referring to people becoming more aware of racism and it's ill effects. In the UK in 1968 the Race Relations Act was passed. So yes, their was an awareness of racism and it a lot of racist thigs were made illegal and punishable under law.
Later 'Woke' included sexism and social justice etc. It's just a new name for people's rights and fairness:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke
Global warming is a scientific fact supported by the overwhelming majority of scientists.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change
I don't know what you mean by vid hysteria.
      Hope this helps.

its due to the weird union rules at the time. you couldn't mime to your record on top of the pops, you had to rerecord it with musicians union staff earlier in the day and then mime to that or sing live to that. it led to some really dreadful musical accompaniments that ruined the original record - watch althea and donna do up town top ranking on top of the pops for a perfect example.

@@Cosford869 No it's not obvious. That's well over hyped, in order to pander to the feminists in charge now. Girls loved getting touched up at Top of the Pops and came back time after time and bragged about it! They only complain now to get compensation

Thanks very much for posting this. Very enjoyable, especially as I would have been the same sort of age then as those teenagers dancing away there. But what a pile of bollocks was that song.

The pile of bollocks sold more than T-Rex, Donny Osmond, Jimmy Osmond, David Cassidy, Don McLean, Alice Cooper and even the New Seekers managed that year.. hit no.1 in four countries and paid Bob Woodward’s mortgage. What you might call a bit of a result.

Might be bollocks to you but a lot of us like it. Chart wise it spent 4 weeks at #1 and 19 weeks on the chart. Now that's quite an achievement in the charts of 1972.

They weren't "great times". You're kidding yourself, or have enormous rose tinted glasses, or were relatively rich in the 70s. Yes, this tune is a classic though.

One of the worst records ever made. However, it's so bad that it's funny. Their follow up record 'Desperate Dan' had a shocker and really funny b-side called Opus 300. I remember it being played on Kenny Everett's world's worst record show in 1977.
