Thanks a ton for including the percentage difference graphs after all the tests! Gives a nice summation and overview afterwards. Otherwise you have to hold too many numbers and the general impression is more skewed
dude I really appreciate it that you showed both 1440p and 4k in your results, I really missed those from the comparisons done by Harbor Unboxed and Tech Jesus!
To be fair, their focus isn't on should you upgrade but rather how much better is the cpu compared to last gen and competition. 1440p and 4k would have skewed the comparison and possibly sent out a wrong message. I'm grateful that we have such scientific channels and also ones like this channel that are more geared towards more real-life decision-making for people with budget.
Doesnt matter how much better it is if you cant see tangible gains. I play at 1440p so I dont understand why I would give one shit about 720p or 1080p results. All I care about is my own performance at my own settings.
@@rykehuss3435 Well then you'll be happy to know that there is a MINIMUM AVERAGE 15-20 fps increase @ 1440p (assuming not 21:9), over the 3600, assuming you have a GPU that can handle it.
@@rykehuss3435 The concept for how HUB and GN (and many other channels which perform these kinds of more analytical testing) do their testing (an aspect of their methodology, or testing philosophy if you will) is to use the results as a _proxy_ to work out the kind of performance improvements gen to gen, and architecture to architecture, and then encourage the viewers/readers to extrapolate as needed for their particular application. If you want to use the results directly, so you know what performance to expect, that's also a valid thing, but let's not pretend that HUB and GN's testing methodologies are somehow worthless, as they're far from it. They just have a different purpose, and that's fine. (this all being said, both HUB and GN _also_ perform the kind of testing you seem to want, at 1440p and 4K - it's just not part of their CPU reviews, due to the kind/style of reviews they do. They do sometimes do setting deep dives and optimisation guides, however, which are excellent, and I highly recommend them!)

That would defeat the whole point because it would be GPU bound. This is comparing CPU so what is the logic in bottlenecking the CPU with a mid range GPU.

@@Andrew-xo6hl GPU performance do come into the equation when we are testing out 2 CPUs which are from different generations. You wouldn't pair up a 3600 with 4090 and compare it with a 5600X paired up with the same, there will be performance issues for sure with the 3600 build. So, in order to eliminate such differences in this video the person should've paired up both the CPUs with something like a 3060/3060ti or in a more extreme case a 3070 in order to draw out a fair comparison. Only because it has 2 more cores. Gaming performance is literally the same. Some might argue that 8 core should be standard because of the new consoles but I think that’s bull.
3600X will not hit 100% in gaming even with a 2080ti. 3700X gives you that extra 33% but imo its overkill. you dont need more than 6 cores unless youre editing. Newer gen consoles on 8 cores are using mobile cpus with low clocks that are nowhere near the clocks that a 6 core desktop CPU hits. Even the 4 core 3300x is good to go until you go above the 2070 super. I have 3600X and 2080 super.
5600x is more future proof than a 3700x. Its also faster than it, in both gaming and workstation loads. Just because new consoles have 8 cores (which are very much weaker compared to PC cores because PC cases have actually good cooling in general) doesnt mean games will start "requiring" 8 cores. They wont. They will require fast single thread performance, now and forever. Since AI and physics have to be calculated on one core. So what ends up happening is that 1-2 cores will get hammered the hardest, and after about 8 threads everything else is just gravy. 4c/8t is good enough for years to come, as long as theyre fast. Like a 10300.
@@rykehuss3435 i dont agree with you bro. Look at Valhalla on a 4 core cpu. CPU usage went up to 95% at times and when the gameplay becomes hectic, it stutters. I can't tell you how much i hate micro-stutters, it feels awful. With an 8 core cpu, everything runs smooth. It just feels nicer. I think 5600x is a bad buy because some games are already using more than 6 cores with over 50% cpu usage. It's not just about the frame rate you know. It's about frame pacing. How smooth it feels. So, 4 core is dead, 6 core is entry level and 8 core 16threads is ideal. 10-12 cores are premium options.
Thanks for the video! I bought a Ryzen 3600 system this summer and wondered if it was worth upgrading to the 5600. I'm super happy with it's performance right now, maybe I'll upgrade next year if the price drops.
Thank you for testing at higher resolutions. Makes me feel less panicked about waiting for a bios update to grab zen 3, since I have a 3440x1440 screen.
I was a 3600 user just upgraded 2 days ago. Despite the usage/ value of 3600, my gaming experience on 5600x is outstanding. I see huge fps gain, pairing with my 3080. As a gamer, I see the fps gain is very convincing, its like I upgraded to a better gpu even though your pc specs stay the same.
I would like to see these same two CPUs ran again and compared to the stock cooler (ran in a closed case like normal computers). I have a hard time understanding why we need to buy $50 aftermarket coolers on “mid-range” CPUs. For people who hate noise, I understand that justification. But $50 could instead be used for more cores, double the storage, a slightly faster GPU etc when we talk about $1000 builds. If you could run -some- of these tests again with these two chips with stock coolers, that would be appreciated.
Thank you for including 4K gaming FPS results. I feel too much emphasis is given to 1080p gaming just because it shows more differences. This is an excellent comparison review!! At 4K, most games will care more about GPU than CPU unless you play Star Citizen like me where everything matters...
@@twitchie2245 3600 might drop to 150-180 or so in a few months, you'll be paying 60% more for 20% performance increase. And the 3600's performance was more than enough as is, it's not like it was running trash fps. 5600x doesn't make sense for most customers that actually care about their budget.
Thank you for testing 4k. It’s what I play at on my 3080/3600 and it’s great! No need to upgrade unless a specific game I play at 1440p is 20-30% faster and above the critical 80fps. I just don't understand the comments
i find the 3700x to be inherently flawed due to its 65wtdp and inherenly high voltage required to clock above 4ghz. As far as that goes you may want to consider the 5600 launch in january...considering how damn hard its going to be to find a zen3 chip instock until then....IJS...then if you want to run that mobo for years longer...eventually get more cores...since the 5600 will be 220$...and offer zen3 performance in games vs zen2. IJS. Plus youl eventually upgrade from the 3700x for similar cicumstances/reasons. in 2022+ anyways.
Just btw ^^' Even if the 3700x had a better price/performance ratio (not sure if it has), the 5000 series in combination with the new 6000 graphics series has an additional performance boost with their smart memory access technology. (If you already had this in mind, then just ignore my comment :3)
I was waiting for such a video! The 4k results were the interesting (for me) part. Knowing that there are almost the same is very good information. Thank you!
In other words, while the performance increase is great for a generation over generation improvement, it's pointless to upgrade from a 3600. These margins look good on paper but in practice they are not far enough apart to warrant spending money upgrading. If you are sporting a 1600/x then it's a great upgrade option. Pick it over a 3600 if building new so long as the price isn't too far apart. You need to bare in mind the market segment here, if you are not using a high end GPU you will not see these gains in gaming. Most people using the 3600 built a mid range/budget gaming system, choosing the 3600 over say a 3800x or faster so they could get a better GPU, likely something mid range like a GTX 1660Ti, RTX 2060 or RX 580/590, Rx 5600/5700 etc. Throw a 5600x in a system with any of these GPUs and while there may be some slight gains they will be insignificant when actually in use. Save a bit more money and upgrade your GPU and you will see larger, more noticeable gains, especially if you are on the lower end of the GPU spectrum currently, that is, if you even need an upgrade at all.
Exactly what I thought. I know you made this a year later. But, I still bought a Ryzen 5 3600 instead of a 5600x simply because I didn’t want to upgrade my motherboard (A320 I know very entry level and pretty much no OC). Very happy that my set-up is still very relevant regardless of the next lineup from AMD being here.
If it's possible, a test with more mid range GPU should be done as they are more likely to be paired with a 3600/5600. The gap might shrink due to GPU bottleneck instead.
Thank you! Really appreciate adding the 4K resolution to the comparison since it's mostly the resolution I play in and def need this video to be sure to save that extra cash going for the 3600 and a better GPU!
Difficult to at the moment get at better GPU than the 3090 that's in this test system. :) I was surprised to see that the difference between the CPUs were so small at 4K. I take it even having a 3090 is a bottleneck at such high resolution, or otherwise the difference should be bigger between the two CPUs, right?
I have actually upgraded from 1600 to 5600x - my old 1600 was @ 4GHz +RAM 3200Mhz for 3 years and I gotta tell you the upgrade was well worth it even tho I am still using 980ti while waiting for 6800XT . The difference is significant in 1% lows and even tho GPU is old RDR2/ACO/Witcher 3 FPS are far more smoother there is no comparison to 1600. UNIGINE Valley from something like 4000 points on (1080 extreme HD ) to 4400 points just by CPU change. 1600 would bottleneck any newer GPU like crazy thats for sure.

You’ve established a standard for quality benchmarking work. 5600X vs. 3700X is definitely a comparison I would like to see, as they are at about the same price point right now. I also wonder just how gpu-bound 3440 x 1440p ultrawide results would be.

Nice problem to have! I have had to build with a 3400G when it became clear Nvidia weren't delivering enough GPUs to cause knock on price cuts. SAM may become available on R7 3700, as resizeable BAR support is a PCIE feature not a CPU feature
The only reason the 5600x (GEN 3) looks amazing is because it's paired with a $1,500 dollar GPU. If you have anything less than a RTX 3080 - this will be a complete waste of money (unless you have an edge case for this CPU). A 3700x is about 5 to 10 FPS (maybe more or less in some games) and look at the 3600 in the video. Almost every game over 100 FPS and when you pair the 5600x with a lower tier GPU like RTX 3070 these CPU will be closer together in FPS than in this video. You're game might not be using all R7 cores for gaming, but your computer is. I owned an i5 6600K 4/4 and because I only had enough cores for gaming. I had to make sure windows update was not updating in the background and I had to make sure I closed out all my programs (or I would get frame stutters). You down grade to 6/16 CPU. You are putting yourself closer to game requirements and you'll have to start doing the same thing in a year or two. I have 3700x and I have discord open, chrome open (and maybe a TH-cam video, or music app open) and could have windows update in the background. And I just launch my game without having to think twice about closing anything. You should try to hold out for Zen 4 to upgrade, but if you really want to upgrade your CPU. Wait till they release the R7 5700x (around $380 I'm sure) .

NOTE: the 3600 IS NOT $200 anymore, and hasn't been for at least a week (which is the age of this video) in the USA. They are now just under $250 on both amazon and newegg, likely due to stock depletion and people unable to wait for Zen 3 to be in stock for various reasons/can't afford it. There's a gamer split between esport & FPS type titles and story /scenery slower paced games. 1080p is faster whilst 4K pushes the image difference. 1440p now becomes feasible but falls between 2 stools. If you've paid for 4K monitor & GPU you don't buy the R5/i5, you go 7 & up.

I have i7 6700 and RX 480. Thinking about getting 6900 XT when availability stabilizes, then the 6900X. That does mean I have to use Linux as its core with Steam to run most games. Windows 10 is increasingly unwieldy when advanced operations from Control Panel is being phased out, requiring Powershell or command line to perform obscure tasks, at which is more Linux domain than Windows in terms of Ease of Use scales.
Great video as always. It would be great to see real life comparison @1440p Ultra with GPU that will people realisticly buy if they are buying 6cores cpu (5700XT, 2080 Super, 3070.. RX 6800.....or in future , 6700, 6700XT, 3060Ti....)
Viewers deciding between these these two CPUs should be aware that the only reason that you are seeing a significant difference in performance is because the test rig is running an RTX 3090 which is bottlenecking the 3600 (and probably the 5600X) at the lower resolutions. Hopefully you are all designing your rigs to be GPU bottlenecked so you aren’t wasting unused, and more expensive GPU performance. If you have an RTX 3060 or less then you will probably see little to no difference in FPS performance of these two CPUs at any resolution. With an RTX 3070 at 1080p you might start to see a difference with very high FPS games like CS:GO but otherwise the 3600 is still fine.
Right? Of course I'm not asking for a double performance (would be stupid expect for this) for the doubled price, but 3600 still kills it for the price...
They release games like every few months or so, so I don't think they have the time for that. They'd rather squeeze the most profit than to satisfy customer

Like months ago i was looking at the product and it would cost no more than $200 but now the r5 3600 on amazon is like $260 which is absurd. Do u know any good sites that offer a viable price?
Absolutely not. AMD shit on 3600 production because they saw nobody was buying the x or xt versions. Anti consumer as fuck and most likely making space for 5600 non-x, rumor has it $220. So you're stuck between 3600xt which is usually same price as 3600x now, or going up (5600x) or down (3100x).
@@libertyprime9307 yeah it’s the worst, i should’ve just bought it months ago when it was going for like $180. Now i’m a little stuck in final building my first pc.

Can u make a video where u compare 10400 with 9400f, but the 10400 will only be using 6c6t I bet both will give similar performance If they perform same then intel 10th Gen is nothing but 9th with hyper threading
yes its almost the same! even the 10900k is a 9900ks with 2 useless cores more!! Intel did NOTHING... They build a new Socket to put their old cpus into it and sell it as "10.gen" !! if u onw a 9700f or a 9600k....stay there, dont buy these "new" old garbage for much money
They will yield similar performance in games but productivity works will probably see improvement. 6 more threads mate 6. That's like comparing i5 7th gen to i7 7th gen
so you are paying 2x the money for ~1-20% improvement in synthetic tests but in 4K gaming they are the similar. Price per frame in dollars does not translate to prices in UK where for 3600 you need to pay £192 and 5600X costs £359. 3600 still very good value for money.
I got my 3600 at Newegg for $175 with a 3 month Xbox game pass included. Still holding up well in games at 1440p. Did not like the stealth cooler, replaced it with a cheap tower cooler so that it runs cool and quiet.

(this all being said, both HUB and GN _also_ perform the kind of testing you seem to want, at 1440p and 4K - it's just not part of their CPU reviews, due to the kind/style of reviews they do. i would like to that comparison against 3700x as kept seeing on other videos that 3700x is more future proof

A much needed comparison

Yes, especially if it helps makes black Friday sales decisions if there is a sale on 3700x
i find the 3700x to be inherently flawed due to its 65wtdp and inherenly high voltage required to clock above 4ghz.
Just btw ^^'
Even if the 3700x had a better price/performance ratio (not sure if it has), the 5000 series in combination with the new 6000 graphics series has an additional performance boost with their smart memory access technology. (If you already had this in mind, then just ignore my comment :3)
Totally not worth it
I was waiting for such a video!
It's great to see someone who's not blinded by the benchmarks and actually think of part combinations and budget.
Given my current CPU is a 3600 and my GPU is a 3080, would that make it more viable to buy a 5600X?
@@SnafuYT the 5800x is your option
@@SnafuYT 5700x might be better option
If it's possible, a test with more mid range GPU should be done as they are more likely to be paired with a 3600/5600. The gap might shrink due to GPU bottleneck instead.
I got my 3600 for $159, and 5600x is going for $299. I can wait next gen. Or if they come out with a 5600 below $200.
Great video! I must have a really good 3600 because mine sits at 4.3Ghz @ 1.2V. perfectly stable and almost never goes beyond 60C with a 240mm AIO.
So this is what it’s come to 🤦🏻♂️ watch the darn video!
I take it even having a 3090 is a bottleneck at such high resolution, or otherwise the difference should be bigger between the two CPUs, right?
i cannot imagine buying a 3600 and now even thinking of upgrading, even the 1600 is still a beast lol

@@seanv4321thanks, I was also thinking about the smart access memory feature on the upcoming amd gpu's.

Day 25 of asking Jarrod to include Destiny 2 in benchmarks
hmm
NOTE: the 3600 IS NOT $200 anymore, and hasn't been for at least a week (which is the age of this video) in the USA. They are now just under $250 on both amazon and newegg, likely due to stock depletion and people unable to wait for Zen 3 to be in stock for various reasons/can't afford it. The 3600xt was actually cheaper, at $233 Amazon when I pulled the trigger last Sunday, but has now gone up as well.

I can't stress this enough, there is so much people that don't even test cpu gaming performance at 1440p argumenting there is no difference at resolution higher than 1080p. It's been demonstrated over and over that CPU performance still matters at 1440p. At 4k I agree it becomes almost irrelevant. Thanks Jarrod
4k is so NICHE....its like yeah you can run a 6 core or even 4 core to play 4k....but if you got the kinda $$$ to play 4k....you may as well get the ryzen 9...12-16c.....and record that 4k content and also produce some....given the lack of content creators for 4k gaming as it is. Or stream etc.... Its somewhat ironic how large the need from 6c to 16c becomes...when going from gaming at 4k....to producing 4k content.....at 4k/60fps etc.....Which is somewhat of a point of emphasis.....plus i only plan on playing single player games/sports/racing/fighting games on 4k...I got the ultrawide for shooters and arpg/rpgs....which is the majority genre i play.....but yeah....my plans on playing 4k games....was paired with making 4k content too bc....why not. I hate playing cs:go on my ultrawide....i play on 720p 16:9...so i run the black bars on my 21:9 monitor...and the quality is trash vs my 1080p former panel....but its a small price to pay....since a trash free-sports game like CS:GO is one of the most idiotic concepts....still makes fastest cpu/ram king among all in server.....and 64 tic is utter trash vs 128 tic clients. While needing a TN panel ideally...and 240+hz....to play such an utter shite game by comparison....ive moved on....LUL
@@RobBCactive i got "more" in my cpu....bc im gonna run multi screen watch sports etc F1 golf etc. While gaming on ultrawide or 4k to 4k....and the need for more cores is apparent for those use cases or over 16gb system utilization. Even then if pros already "made it" with 144hz....having a 360hz tuf monitor isnt going to be the "difference" in going pro...learning to pwn on jack shit will...smh esp then stepping up to payed client services and a TN high refresh monitor off top should be a "first step" not these "next gen" pc master race kiddos that want a zen3 chip a 3070 or better....to play a free game/by majority free games...its largely ironic and a huge byproduct of industry shilling

I don't know why you would use a 3090 for your gaming tests. Not only does less than 1% of the gaming community have one... but the FPS difference between the CPU's drops DRAMATICALLY going from the 3090 to the 3060. So you are telling people they might see more frames... when 85% of the community likely won't

Kudos to you Jarrod for including higher res scores not like 99,9% youtubers focusing just on 1080p performance
No problem! I admit I mostly do it just to show how little it really starts to matter though 😛
With an RTX 3070 at 1080p you might start to see a difference with very high FPS games like CS:GO but otherwise the 3600 is still fine.
the 5600x is double the price of 3600. Absolutely no where in hell it`s worth it.
Right? Of course I'm not asking for a double performance (would be stupid expect for this) for the doubled price, but 3600 still kills it for the price...
