    I'm old enough to remember the late 1960s and early 1970s as a boy, and the artwork of Robert Crumb was really a key feature of the artistic and creative ethos of that fascinating time.

    "CRUMB" the documentary is by filmmaker Terry Zwigoff who had been a longtime friend of Robert's which is the ONLY reason he let a film crew near his crazy family in the first place. The movie was made through love of his friend and was never meant to create a rift between them as I believe it did. After the film's release,Terry helped Robert's brother Max get off the streets and back into making art which Max could sell and Robert profited as well.
    "Confessions of Robert Crumb" IS staged because Robert and Aline were paid a buttload of money that they needed to leave the US and move to France. They were well aware of the image they wanted on camera. In present day their only daughter is a tattoo artist in Tacoma WA.

    I find it very interesting the way he talks about women, and a lot of his sexual fantasies and proclivities towards them in his comics. Very similar to the way a lot of serial killers talk about them, but instead of killing or committing acts of rape he has found solace and relief in illustration.

      Most artists of any influence are "crazy". They are often people so traumatized by their early lives (or merely their genetic makeup that makes them too sensitive) that their only effective outlet is through art. This ends up putting on display a range of emotional and psychic expressions that represent aspects we all have, but to an extreme that is deeply affecting. That's why so-called "normal" artists produce art that is perhaps technically flawless and beautiful, but not particularly emotionally affecting. It takes a Van Gogh or Picasso to really stir the primal imagination. I'm not sure Crumb is anywhere near that level, but his work certainly has some depraved honesty to it.

    Robert Crumb is a real life Woody Allen movie character. By his own confessions a pitiful soul attempting to keep his head above the waters of society's currents. His art is quite garish and funny all at the same time. I was first introduced to his work when I was in graduate school at a major university and his cartoons appeared in the school newspaper.

  • @BotYep
    @BotYep 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I think there's a difference between expressing your sexuality and exploiting women. Crumb's cartoons are funny, honest, and really gross. The women in them are definitely sexualized, but not in the typical "stupid skinny bimbo" kind of way. I don't really know what I'm trying to say here other than I think his work is fun, and as a woman I love looking at it.

What's especially interesting is noticing that this type of guy is predictive of the whole beta-male phenomena that grew out of the women's liberation movement. My guess is that beta men have always existed, but that modern media and people like Crumb just made the phenomena more visible. What's scary though is the high proportion of metro-sexual dweebs that came from supposedly "normal" backgrounds. The fact is, broken and single family homes are not "normal" or shouldn't be.

    This guys cartooning is timeless. I have had; at many times tdifferent times; in my life; when me and afriend or two laughed hard, and out loud at his cartoons. Sorry; I know that was a long run on sentence. He's so prolific too. I could waste alot of time laughing along with him. His stuff is; and maybe more importantly is a pretty good statement about socioty, and some of the obsurdity in it. Just even thinking about some of his cartoons makes me want to laugh. Looking at his cartoons would probly be an excellent fun way to learn illustraton too. They are alot lot better, than most popular cartoons on TV. At least what I like. Pencil drawn cartoons. I saw my first one of his cartoons; in 1968; when I saw my new Xmas present. The album; Cheap Thrills. He's"Too Much". Sorry I can't help it. Im a big Marx Brothers fan also. :) I have one his cartoons on my phone. I show it to total strangers sometimes. They always laugh, then say wait let me see that. :)

    robert crumb: a classic repressed virgo male, just like me, born 30 august, like me, tries to come to terms with the world out there and his own inhibitions, shyness with girls and repressed sexuality. to do so, he uses his drawing skills and self-deprecating, ironic sense of humour.

    I was taking it seriously until it got to this point 3:36 then once I calmed down and finally stopped laughing I realized that he's kinda playing to the camera and manipulating the audience.
