    So glad you've left all the beekeeping videos up. - They are a brilliant resource to make reference to. Thanks Trev.

    I still love going back over your videos Trev.
    I'd think if you put water in the pan it would keep it at the right temperature?

    I loved the part about not too hot or the roller will come apart. That's exactly what happened to me last week. 😅

    Slick. The roller idea is great. Beats brushing...Thanks!

      @@EcrotekBeekeepingSupplies1 but then again you don't like plastic frames

    I always seen plastic frames as beetle hotels, since they provide tine spaces for beetles where bees can not get to the beetles to run them off. As a matter fact, those spaces on the plastic frames act as save heavens for beetles and other pest.

      So, where is a place for plastics frames?
      You said several times in your comments that '''However, there is a place for plastics frames'''
      If plastic frames are a save hotel for beetles and moth and other critters, why would anyone want to use them if their bees or harvest can be jeopardized?
      Kinda puzzles me.......
      Either plastic or wooden frames can be put in a centrifuge, has been done for many years on the wooden frames with wax foundation.
      I never seen a certificate that stated that the plastic frames are food grade material.......many claim they are, but they never come forward with an legal binding document. Not all plastics are food grade.
      And it actually bugs me when i see folks using any plastic containers or pails when harvesting honey and the plastics are not even food grade.
      So why should someone use plastic frames?
      Can you show me a document that those frames are actually food grade material.

    Thanks Trev, I'm going to do mine right now. Do you (or anyone else) have any tips on luring bees into a brand new hive? I'm going to wax and then dap some lemongrass essential oil and then sit back and cross my fingers :)

    • @j.johnson2792
      @j.johnson2792 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking of trying the same. Did you mix the beeswax and lemongrass and spread it on plastic frame?

    • @wildone1392
      @wildone1392 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@j.johnson2792 I melted some wax and then poured it along the inside top of the wooden frames (pretty wobbly rough job!) but just to show them where to get started. This seems to work perfectly as they drew the comb from the top down. Then lemongrass I just dabbed around the place.

    I do not have any wax yet. I just have one hive and this next summer will be my first honey harvest. I'd like to start a second hive. I already bought black plastic frames for the brood boxes. Can I buy bees wax to coat my frames with or am I just out of luck until harvest time?

  • @crispernator
    @crispernator 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Gday trev i did my second harvest yesterday ,was only 8 frames as im just a little backyarder but out of 8 frames i had 7 blowouts . this caused me considerable hassle as i had to keep cleaning filters /screens that built up with wax and the honey wouldnt flow through the one frame that didnt blow out was ? yep plastic so guess what is going in my honey super ,all the frames were wired and had good foundation but it took me 5 hours to complete my extraction main reason having to stop and clean filters did get 16 kg though better than 4 last year take care .

    I use mostly wood framed with plastic foundation, have good luck with them but always add wax like you are. I like you jig for holding the frame going to make me one like it.

    Hi could you add some essential oil to the melted wax as a way of getting this into the hive rather than adding these to feeders.

    Hi Trev, Why do you use the plastic frames if you are not a fan of them? Are the plastic frames being used more on a commercial scale and are they better than the wooden frames or is that just down to personal preference?

    • @Westernwilson
      @Westernwilson 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Paul one reason to use plastic in the honey boxes and wood in the broodnest is that you always know which frames may have been exposed to anything used to treat Varroa. Plastic frames are never put into the broodnest so are as chemical free as possible. Note that in England drone foundation is used for honey production as it spins out faster.

      Westernwilson,
      Would be easy and cheaper to mark wooden frames with an pencil or pen or a painted dot if used or not used for a specific application or use.
      I even can write on wooden frames and write notes right on them.
      I don't think you could do this with an black plastic frame.

    Trev, how do you clean the plastic frames easily over winter time??. I know you aren't a fan of them. How clean do you need to get them. I use a paint scraper however there is still residue left on them. Admittedly, the wooden frames with foundation are a lot easier but I have inherited a whole lot of the plastic frames. Thank you. Your channel is awesome.

      As I watched, I thought 100-110 was much hotter than it is, because of the excess running like that, was shocked that it was only 230F, and good to know that over 100 it discolors. learning more every day, Thanks again

      I thought I heard melt point is 146 or so, but 55 would be about 130, WOW, good to know, gonna have to start melting down some wax for my foundation, got a couple jars from cleanup of frames, and 10 frames of really old comb from the original nuc's, last thing I want to do is attract moths.. Thanks again
