Yes, yes, yes! Stick slippage. Love the ‘caterpillar’ up and down the stick lol. It’s what I do when my sticks move. Been working hard to get my grip and stroke better, however inevitably your stick will move in your hand. In my case it gradually moves up the stick and I need to caterpillar back to where I want it. Also find if my hands are dry the stick moves a little more. Thanks Stephen for confirming this as ‘normal’- it’s been a really helpful lesson. Cheers 😀

For practicing (a lot), I am digging the ProMark sticks with the "activegrip" coating. As my hands warm up, there's just enough stickiness to minimize slippage but not so much that it is annoying.

Hi, for me the activegrip from ProMark is great in the beginning but I can't play too long with these as they are getting too sticky and my hands are getting blisters...
So just a song or two is great, but after I get back to my ProMark "natural" sticks (no coating at all)

Stephen, you are a very good instructor and a primary reason I subscribed to your Channel. I am only a Recreational Player, playing drums to My Music again after 50 Year Hiatus since 1969. I'm 70, retired, and play drums for a retirement enjoyment. When my Grandkids (3 Toddlers now, 2 babies), the Toddlers Love Playing my Drums in the Basement. They ask to play all the time !! I love that too!!. Your description of the Fulcrum is a new one for me. That was never taught to me those many years ago. I'm getting better at it with my right hand , especially on the HiHats , but the left hand is more elusive to attain. I play Matched Grip Now, but learned tradional in 1966 - when I first took lessons and was Bit By The Drum Bug (thank you Charlie Watts, Ringo, Ginger Baker, Dino Danelli, and Keith Moon). This video is consistent nwith all your excellent content with to the point consistency and simply & prgamatically presented. THX again. I'm going to give this a try and down load the practice guide (albeit, I'm very bad about practicing other than playing along to My Music about an 1 hour a day).

I love you videos and as brand new aspiring drummer (sax player my whole life, but at 55 years old I've always wanted to learn to play a kit) and I think your 3-Part Daily Practice Routine will be hugely beneficial.
I can play very basic quarter note beats, have rhythm, but have yet to be able to separate my hands from my feet on anything more complex than that...I even find the hi-hat pedal going when it's not supposed to be; sometimes with the left hand on snare, sometimes with my other foot! :)
Thanks for doing what you do!

I have ridiculously dry, often cracked hands. Before I practice, I put on some O'Keefe's Working Hands, which makes my hands feel almost normal. I do my warmups on the pad with some all wood 2Bs. It's like swinging a lead bat before you go up to the plate. The hand creme really does the trick, and I'm able to go through my exercises much more easily than before. For playing on the kit, I 5A Vic Grips with nylon tips. With hands as dry as mine, even after using O'Keefe's, the Vic Grips are just fine for me. I think you mentioned this in an earlier video, maybe just in passing--but it was a great tip, and I recommend it to anyone who has "stick travel," as I always called it. I stumbled on my own caterpillar technique a while back, and now it's just a matter of making it second nature. Thanks for all the great advice.

Love your content, and although I rarely comment, I've had to deal with this at times as a gigging drummer so I may actually have something useful to contribute here. I always have at least one extra pair that I've wrapped in electric tape. I don't typically use them unless I'm having trouble with grip, especially during the winter. The only downfall is remembering to switch back to sticks without tape if your next song requires cross sticking on the snare.

I bought a spray can of Bat Grip at a sporting goods store in 1994. been in my kit bag since then; how many hundreds of gigs later still have an 8th of a can left - that's how rarely you have to apply, and how little you should apply. Works amazing, actually aids in lightening my grip AND reducing fatigue. I curl my middle finger just slightly for 2 reasons: To keep from dropping sticks and as primary actuator for finger control.

Thank you for addressing this issue. I am currently relearning how to play after a 20+ year break. I was self-taught and picked up a few bad habits that I'm now trying to break. I play matched grip and noticed that while practicing rudiments my right (dominant) hand slides down the stick. I already started crawling back up on my own discovery. However, it's annoying and perplexing that my left hand never slides down. I'll try your advice and see if I get results.

You're totally right, it's a topic that is not talked about, but it will come naturally in time. You putting it out there will help new drummers to come upon this technique sooner rather than later. At the risk of submitting (what sounds like) a commercial for a competing stick brand, I have very little slippage issues because of the sticks I use. Regal Tip incorporates a finish that (for me) is superior in that regard. With the other sticks, I find that rubbing my hands with resin improves the situation. Also, I'd love to download your How to Practice guide. How might I do that?

I’m playing devils advocate here, but adding tape, wax, a coating of some sort, in short anything that creates friction, is counter productive. Friction at any point within your technique and grip, diminishes the kinaesthetic property, feeling the stick move, transfer of weight (pending on how far back/up the stick), through to the rebound etc. Similarly, we assume that the thumb is the most important finger, but the pinky is the one with access to the power and control. The pinky doesn’t need its own muscles due to having the power of the arm bones behind it. Most people with pain in the wrist, tension, miss the fundamental problem, that of misunderstanding the elbow rotation, or from miss use of the collarbone and scapula (shoulder blade).
I love your exercise on sliding up the stick to compensate for the grip change. Technique is unforgiving. The long term gain is amazing, but we often don’t see the small changes at first. Throw different techniques and grips into the mix, or combing a Moeller motion and push pull stroke presents its challenges. At the heart of all these things is ‘purposeful practice’, diligence and fun. Sheer fun for playing something that gives so much back to us and others. Happy New Year to all and I really like your channel. Great community you have here.

It's best if you can switch it up. If you ever play in a quite theater for 30 people, you're gonna want to play really soft, and you'll want to be able to shorten your stick.
Sometimes you may want to even switch midsong from very soft and subtle to massive sound as loudly as possible.
I would recommend playing with the sticks while watching tv, just twirl it around, try to switch grips a bit. I like to play rimclicks with the gripend of the stick for more volume and attack, so I've taught myself to switch from holding the sticks on one end to holding on the other end. Will get some impressed stares from the public as a bonus.

A friend turned me on to cat-wax! He's a veterinarian and also plays drums for fun... He found that cat ear wax has a sticky membrane woven into the wax fibers! He began collecting the wax and using it for his dry hands before playing. He gave me a sample and I gotta say, it works great! The only caveat, the smell is almost unbearable! After playing in the drum cage for about 20 minutes, I had to exit quickly to keep from vomiting in front of 6oo plus people. I now wear a respirator mask that is equipped with an oxygen generator. (Like what they use for Airliners) I get a little light-headed from all of the oxygen now but, I can now breath without getting sick and my sticks don't slip out of my hands!!! A double win, indeed!

Bad technique causes stick slippage, and potentially injuries. Ensure good technique, especially a proper fulcrum. A proper fulcrum does not need any crawling; nor does it need any change of stick positions. (back on stick, etc.)
Also, I disagree with using the middle finger as the primary fulcrum. It is second to using the index finger. It may be primary if you are playing in the snare line in a Drum and Bugle Corps. But you are losing the finesse and control of using the index finger.
And those positions on the stick are not necessary if you use all three fulcrums.

Haha, I’ve been playing for like 30 years and I found this interesting.
First of all, crawling the stick back is like just what u do, didn’t even know it was a thing! You need to know how to do that if your like playing a 3 hour gig. Next, I like my sticks as smooth as possible, this reduces irritation and blisters… third, after you play a certain weight stick awhile, you can feel your balance, you know when to move the stick back in your hand. Fourth… Gripsticks=Blisters, HORRIBLE (just my opinion man) especially like he said when your hand get sweaty and soft, rip your calluses off!! I hate them, however they may work for you. Gorilla Snot has been keeping guitarists', bassists', and drummers' hands nimble and tacky since 1987. This non-staining grip enhancer is derived from naturally refined tree rosin and boasts a non-gooey feel and delightful pine scent. Just rub a bit between your thumb and forefinger to enjoy a viselike grip on picks and sticks, mallets and bows, even when you're sweating. Gorilla Snot activates with body heat and washes off easily with soap and water. Just one jar of Gorilla Snot will last dozens of gigs.
