This is why I respect Del Piero. He speaks the blunt truth and doesn't make excuses or overhype Italy. I remember during the Euros he was openly saying Italy don't have top level players and it would be Mancini miracle if they won. Italy don't have good enough players old or young to sustain success because they are not producing the right type of players to play this moderns style of football, because Italy traditionally has been more about defending and counter-attacking and now football is proactive pressing and attacking and you need highly athletic and technical players and Italy cannot produce them to a high level.

    • @justadreamerforgood69
      @justadreamerforgood69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Same for Spain, they play their boring passing game which is obsolete because of the quick transitions in the modern game 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@justadreamerforgood69 Disagree, anything in football can work with the right personel and ideology. When you look at the history of football, it's all cyclical or variations of cyclically similar things. The game started with 3 / 5 back formations, they went out of fashion and now they're back. The game started out with heavy defensive leanings, that faded out when people like Sacchi, Lobanovskyi masterminded counter and high pressing(which also had a recent revival because of Ralf Rangnick) and people like Mou, Simeone, Conte brought back the hard working defensive style, wing backs becoming full backs and then full backs becoming wing backs again etc... There's too many examples to name but I truly believe that there isn't one or only a handful of ways to win championships in football, irregardless of it being the past or the modern day. I think there are too many variables to say only high line pressing is the only way to beat top teams.

Jorginho is a show boat. Italy needs to develop two Pogba esque types that are hard to knock off the ball in midfield who can make long passes and be dangerous scoring options from a distance. You have Chiesa who can be on the far right or left side when he is healthy. You also need clinical strikers.
Moise Kean is a good prospect that needs more play time.
    Upgrade the D as well.
My formation would be the following:
    2 strikers (Kean, Scamacca)
3 midfielders (Lorenzo Pellegrini, Zaniolo, Chiesa) Chiesa can act as a bursting mid/striker hybrid. While we wait for Chiesa have Balotelli play on the right side.
5 defenders (1 of which plays up a bit which would be Barella) Barella, Mancini, Bastoni, Rugani, De Sciglio)

The Macedonians were second in their group, as were the Italians in theirs. In this cycle, they beat the Germans on the road, and I think they deserve respect, not underestimation. Football is not a transfer mark, but people of flesh and blood. All previous results today do not play "hic rhodus hic salta".

Too much nonsensical talk about Mancini and whether he is to blame, absolutely not. Mancini had the right strategy, it created 65% possession, it created 32 goal scoring opportunities, it limited the opposition to just 4 goal attempts and he is a world class manager who led the team to a Euro Championship. The problem against Nth Macedonia was the players and their lack of execution of the strategy in the final third of the field. Football is a simple game, put the ball in the back of the net more times than your opposition and you win. It doesn't matter what type of formation you play, whether you have 90% possession, whether you have all the top players, have 50 shots on goal or what style you play (tiki taka, geggenpress, etc.), it all still comes down to put the ball in the net. I use the analogy of boxing, you can be a bad boxer but all it takes is one good punch to knockout even the best opponent, just ask Mike Tyson about James Buster Douglas!

Alex is right on all counts, an excellent analysis. There are 2 other key issues with Italian football. One of them he touched on. Whenever an Italian national team delivers a title or goes close, the desire, rather than grow (having had the taste of success) diminishes - and markedly. It has been replicated time and again. The 1982 WC winning squad fell apart in the Euro 84 qualifiers and were legless in 86. The 94 WC r/up were bounced out of Euro 96 in the group stage. The 2006 WC winners were battlers in Euro 2008 and a disaster at WC 2010. And that leads us to the other stark failure - not mutually exclusive - managers sticking with those who have delivered a title out of some kind of warped loyalty, irrespective of their form. From Bearzot to Sacchi to Lippi ... and now Mancini. They are either not brave enough or simply do not know how to refresh and restart and, frankly, often don't have the cattle.

My gosh...I think he would have taken a kick in the jewels a lot easier!! He is SO removed from what recently transpired. Yes, and to quote Ale, "This is one of MANY issues...." As I tried to share, "Italy's issues are many, from their youth development programs, Serie A - A.K.A. acting school, their boring and completely predictable defense coupled with a complete lack of offensive creativity/poise. Serie A officials are...."creative". Today's Italy can't even get ONE squad in the final 16 of the UCL, and now have missed not one but two World Cup qualifiers. Uefa is gonna have only 3 more spots, and teams in uefa are getting better. So it will still not be very easy to qualify. The likes of Norway, Ireland, and Czech can shock some big nations.

those 2 Messi fan boys probably didn't like the fact Del Piero said Portugal has better players and would have beaten Italy anyway.

    Wait ,
    North Macedonia defeated Italy --1
    Italy defeated England --2
    From equations 1 & 2 ,
    North Macedonia > England .
So that means North Macedonia is better than England cuz the Maths can't be wrong , right ????
