    Another thing (among many) the Expanse gets right vs other space shows: You wouldn’t quickly freeze in space.
    Most shows depict people in vacuum immediately turning to ice. But since there’s no air to carry away heat it would actually take you a very, _very_ long time to freeze (in fact disposing of waste heat for astronauts and space stations is a surprisingly difficult engineering problem). Heck, if you’re in direct sunlight you’ll actually get roasted.
    No, the problem is obviously oxygen and again the Expanse does it well. Naomi breaths out (since your lungs would basically explode if you try and hold your breath) and instead injects herself with super concentrated oxygen to keep herself alert & alive.
    I just _love_ the way the Expanse is so very grounded in reality.

      The ONLY problem I had with the science of the show was how they basically achieved not having everything be in Zero G simply with MAG BOOTS.
      That solution to that problem simply ignored science to the extent it ALMOST had me not watch the show past the first few episodes. It was just so farcical.
      I was able to eventually ignore it and enjoy the show, but I think they could have done something with some technological advancements in control of gravity, but I also know that would have changed many other aspects of the show.
      It was especially absurd when they had people running in mag boots. Just RIDICULOUS.

    • @eds1942
      @eds1942 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TheGoofyBuddha They spend a lot of time at 1/3 G via constant acceleration. When they are not under artificial gravity (either from acceleration or rotational) they'll clue us in not just with the clicking steps but often with a prop like a cup or something hanging in the air.

    • @cosmicphoto05
      @cosmicphoto05 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@eds1942 Apparently the scripts were all color-coded to help the cast and crew keep track of which type of gravity (float, spin, planetary, acceleration) they were in for any given scene.
      @Goofy Buddha - You're right that walking or "running" in mag boots would not the be the same as running in planetary or acceleration gravity. I mean, whenever a person runs in "normal" gravity, there is always a part of the gait where their body is completely off the ground. The only way someone could "run" with mag boots in zero-g would be essentially to "power walk" or "speed walk"; running with mag boots that we see in the show simply would not be possible.
      Also, in thrust or planetary gravity other than earth's standard 1-g, or 1-g acceleration, which is essentially the same, a person's gait would be very different. Lower-g would be like when you walk underwater in the ocean or a deep pool-more of a loping walk or slow hops (see astronauts on the moon for reference).
      In terms of spin gravity, people would constantly fighting against the Coriolis effect, which would affect their gait and lean differently, depending on whether they were walking spinward, anti-spinward, or parallel to the axis of rotation.
      Most of these issues were addressed in the books, but I can see how the show had to gloss over these details for the sake of brevity and budget constraints.

    • @cosmicphoto05
      @cosmicphoto05 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I imagine that if you're spaced anywhere within the orbit of Mars, you'll die from solar radiation burns before you'll freeze. Considering there's about a 400° C temperature differential between light and shadow, it would be a pretty unpleasant experience. Jupiter or Saturn orbits, maybe 50/50...

    In the book, when Naomi launches herself from the Pella to the Chetzemoka, my response was much like yours. Best case scenario, Naomi is aboard the Chetzemoka with what divers call "the bends," as well as second/third-degree sunburn over half of her body. Dominique Tipper deserved an Emmy for what she presented in the second half of this season.

      This is the most excellently conceived and executed series that I have ever seen. It deserves a lot more critical praise than it gets, IMHO.

    • @StarkRG
      @StarkRG ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't think the pressure difference would be enough to give you the bends. I'm pretty sure that ships are not pressurized to Earth sea level, but even if they were, the pressure difference would only be the equivalent of being about ten meters under water. The actual pressure, though, is probably about a third of that or less. She'd _definitely_ be injured, blood vessels close to the surface might burst, particularly in her eyes, and the freezing of the surface of her eyes would probably cause some damage that current medicine wouldn't be able to fix (though Expanse medicine can). She was breathing out as she went, so her lungs would probably be fairly safe during the brief time she was out there. The degree of sunburn would greatly depend on where in the solar system they were. Even if they were close to Earth, I don't think she was out there long enough for a second- or third-degree burn and, if they were outside of Mars' orbit (which I'm pretty sure they were), it might not even be as bad as a beach-based sunburn.

    • @jsbrads1
      @jsbrads1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@StarkRGseconded.
      Bends happen very quickly when going from 5 atm acclimated with breathing normal air mix to 1 atm.
      Belters prolly also don’t use a normal air mix either.
      For very deep sea diving they can use a mix of mostly helium with a bit of oxygen.
      Belters would use that same mix to save weight!

    • @StarkRG
      @StarkRG ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jsbrads1 I don't think they'd use a heliox mixture because helium really doesn't like to stay in containers and it shouldn't be necessary anyway. Heliox is used by divers because they're breathing gas at _many_ times atmospheric pressure, and it's not needed at all for low dives where you aren't getting more than an extra atmosphere or two of pressure. There's no reason to have the ship pressurized to sea-level and many, many reasons not to (the less pressure there is, the less chance there is of a catastrophic failure if the hull gets punctured, this is why they suit up and vent the ship during battles).
      My guess would be that they have a low-pressure, oxygen-rich atmosphere. As long as the partial pressure of oxygen is high enough, the rest of it doesn't matter so much, and the problems of high flammability and oxygen narcosis in pure oxygen atmospheres only happen when the pressure is high (the Apollo 1 fire happened because they had pressurized the capsule with pure oxygen well above atmospheric pressure).

    • @LeeCarlson
      @LeeCarlson ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StarkRG, For pressure of 30% Earth-normal the atmosphere would need to be almost pure oxygen and therefore a fire hazard for everyone. At no point in the show (or the novels) is that ever even implied. The exposure to vacuum would cause the nitrogen to "boil" out of solution in her blood. This is the reason that they show the vapor coming from Naomi's mouth as she continuously exhales during the jump so as not to cause ruptures of her lung tissue relying on the oxygen in her blood (and the hyper-oxygenated blood ampule) to keep her conscious through the jump and to access the Chetzemoka's air-lock.

    Incidentally, you were not the only person that Marco had that effect on in this episode.
    When it aired the first time, a lot of people were triggered by that scene he had with Fillip because it was classic Abuser behavior - where they tear down their victim and then praise them or build them up almost immediately after that or vice versa and keep that cycle going.
    A lot of people who've been with abusive spouses or grown up with abusive parents instantly recognized the pattern and the scene was so well written by the writers and acted by Keon Alexander, that your reaction is exactly how a normal person should react.

    Naomi would be in ROUGH shape after that crossing. In low (and no) pressure environments the boiling point of water drops - the liquid would boil off of your eyes, your tongue, she would be severely dehydrated. Joints swell painfully. Exposure to unfiltered UV radiation from the sun caused bad burns to develop on the side of her face exposed to it, as we saw. She had to expel all of the air from her lungs, as that air would force its way out damaging tissues along the way if she tried to hold her breath-that was the mistake Cyn made. The hyperoxygenated blood she injected herself with was all that let her retain consciousness long enough to make it.
    There was an accident in a hypobaric chamber decades ago, an astronaut was exposed to vaccuum. You can find video here on youtube. He was working on something and after a few seconds of exposure he just passed out and tumbled to the ground. He survived, saying the last thing he remembered was the sensation of liquid boiling off his tongue - lab techs noticed when he passed out and got the chamber opened again. You’ll only stay conscious in vacuum for 15 seconds or so. After about a minute, you’d be dead.

    We all know Naomi is a badass legend, but my favourite thing (which is in sharp relief in tis episode) is that Namoi does not - fpor even one second - buy any of Marco's horseshit. She lived through all that,it cost her her child, and she KNOWS who and what he is. She's the strongest character on this show, no exceptions. I love her.

    Renember when Naomi jumped after Lucia over Illus? putting aside the whole no having suit and only 15s (plus another some by the oxigenated blood shot) of counscious left that was actually more complicated than this as she had to aim for a small moving target while here she had to aim for the Chetzemoka airlock 50m away... she is extremely good in zero G (point frecuently noted in the books). Its also probably the most realistic despiction of exposure to space vacum in TV .. no exploding head, no instant freezing.. she expeled air before to avoid severe lung damage (unlike the unsuspecting Cyn) , takes a while to freeze in space as there is nothing to give one's heat to save for radiating it slowly..

This is why Holden and I could hang, with a couple of lines in the water, and let the day just roll on by.

    One of the beautiful, interesting, and horrifying details they showed as Naomi made her suitless space walk was that as the airlock opened, she opened her mouth as wide as she could, and let out all of her air. You saw that they put in the time and effort to put in the effect of her breath condensing as it was exposed to the vacuum. There is a reason she did this, and it has to do with why she survived but Cyn did not (no spoiler as you're past this episode).
    For a visualization, I want you to picture a balloon. Fill it up with as much air as it can take. Tie it off. Then, I want you to imagine putting pressure on it on all sides. Top and bottom. Left and right. Front and back. What's almost certainly going to happen is that the balloon will burst. There's a sudden influx of pressure and nowhere for the pressure to go until a weak point in the rubber is found and then POP!
    In this scenario, the balloon is a person's lungs, the tie-off is holding your braeth, and the squeezing is the sudden vacuum of space (the actual physics reverses the direction of the pressure but that's not important for the explanation). This is why when the airlock opened, Cyn almost certainly died almost instantly as his lungs ruptured, in addition to all of the other terrible things that happen in space.
    Naomi, by contrast, pushed out all her air. For the visualization, take the same balloon, but then let out all or almost all of the air before you put the pressure on. The balloon will probably not rupture as you go into the vacuum, and if you have a way to inject oxygen directly into your bloodstream, you can survive a relatively short space walk. Of course, you saw that Naomi didn't exactly do it comfortably, but the point is that she made a desperate gamble when all hope seemed lost.
    Oyedeng, beltalowda.

    So the writers did a LOT of research of what would actually happen if you took a spacewalk without a suit, and so that's possibly the most realistic depiction of that ever shown on TV, especially showing her exhaling while opening the airlock (to keep her lungs from exploding) and even setting up the super-oxygenated blood shot earlier in the season.

    Seasons ago we were set up for Naomi's leap when we were shown Diogo''s uncle lifting up his visor while outside his ship to make an adjustment inside his suit's helmet. It was shocking when it happened, because, speaking for myself, I had thought that exposure to a vacuum would be pretty much immediately fatal. You can learn something new every day! (not that I plan on being able to ever use that knowledge). Apart from being shocking at the time, the scene with Diogo''s uncle seemed a bit odd and unnecessary, just like the bird hovering outside Miller's window, or the camera lingering on the Tachi and the gangway runnning to it. Those scenes were necessary as foreshadowng of things to come.

    Soil - When trying to find the container Monica was being held in, they found one filled with live soil, which is why it had an atmosphere and was warmer than the other containers in the cargo hold. Clearly live soil is being moved about, for there to be a large cargo container like that out at Tycho Station.

    Ok I read Nemesis games right after season 4 because there was no way I could wait another year to see what happened next. The scene where Naomi jumped from the Pella to the Chet was the one scene I was most looking forward to seeing in season 5. It’s a little more drawn out in the books, where Naomi first is looking for a vac suit but she runs out of time, so she risked the hard vacuum transit. It makes sense for the show to skip the looking for a vac suit part. That way, viewers will be more surprised as they will not know Namoi’s true intentions until they see her board the Chet.

    Filip’s slap was very rough - especially following that beautiful scene with just Naomi and him. But sadly, it’s very realistic. For Filip to take his mother's words to heart would mean reevaluating who his father is _and_ also mean reevaluating his own actions on behalf of his father and “the cause”. And what he’s done is indescribably terrible. Owning that you helped murder millions is not easy. In that sense, Naomi directly represents Filip repressed doubt, guilt and shame. These are things he can (unconsciously) absolve himself of by sticking with Marco, while Naomi is, conversely, a threat to Filip. To his conscience and his whole identity. (Of course, Marco is all about weaponizing guilt and shame to absurd degrees, but he of course also dangles carrots, however disingenuously.) So the slap maybe wasn’t an act or a show for Marco, but a desperate, tragic and twisted act of self-defense.
    And lest we forget, the kid has been brainwashed his _entire life_. While him meeting his mother is obviously a great thing for both of them, it can’t immediately undo a lifetime of indoctrination. As with any victim of such coercive control (as the cult or abusive relationship terminology goes) they often need to be away from the coercive environment too for things to improve, or the coercion will reassert itself. Naomi did as much as she could to break through, but Filip is stuck on a spaceship with the cult and Marco himself. If Filip could only get a moment away, but alas. Naomi tried to tell Filip this, and Filip did ask for his own command, which would have allowed him to gain distance, but Marco wouldn’t cede control like that.
    And on top of everything, Filip’s a teenager, which doesn’t help anything. Nothing can ever excuse his actions, but similar to an addict transgressing there’s an explanation. And, like with addicts, the addict and the person can - and should - be considered separate. There’s the son of Marco, but maybe there’s also an actual Filip somewhere.
    Listening to your post-reaction thoughts, you’re right about where everyone is/is going, but just to clarify:
    - The Semeya was headed for a rendezvous with Marco’s Free Navy when the Roci caught up and it blew itself up. They’re close’ish to everyone else (hence the short message delay).
    - The Screaming-Razor-Firehawk-Back was following the Barkeith, and stumbled upon it joining the Free Navy, so they’re closer still to Marco et al.
    - Being closest, Alex and Bobbie will continue following the Free Navy, trying to find Naomi, while the Roci will race to catch up to all of them.
    - The “Chet” has only just now undocked with Naomi onboard
    This season actually makes a good companion to parts of Andor. Naomi’s leap into vacuum, however calculated, reminds me of Kino’s “I’ll consider myself already dead and work from there”-approach to escape. And Maarva saying about Cassian that “I love him more than anything he could ever do wrong” is how Naomi feels for her son.

    Marco seems like he’d be everything you’d want in a leader- visionary, charismatic, inspirational…. If it wasn’t for that little problem of him also being a psychotic madman / terrorist. 😒
    Fillip has been raised to believe his father does no wrong- & murdering your enemies is not only acceptable, but justified. Naomi is able to put a few dents in the walls Marco built around Fillip- but he doesn’t really know if he can, or even wants to believe her - so he defaults back to trying to please his father by pushing her away. I think Cyn, Marco, Karal, & Naomi were very close in the past- maybe not Drummer’s family close, but he (Cyn) still cares deeply for Naomi…. & has felt guilty for his part in hiding Fillip from her - but still follows Marco because he believes in the cause. - just my 3 1/2 cents worth. 😎🚀

He was never going to be able to actually stand up to Marco and get Naomi out of there. The most he could do was try to keep Marco from killing her. Scratch that, all he could do was keep Marco from having Filip kill her.

    Angela, you REALLY need to read the books after you finish the series. They are different from the show in plenty of ways, sure, but you do get a much greater insight into many characters that the show couldn't afford to dwell on too long, like Prax, Havelock, Clarissa, Anna, Elvi, Marco, Filip, even Anderson Dawes and Bull. You could actually read "The Churn" right now if you wanted to, and it wouldn't spoil anything from the show, and you wouldn't need to be familiar with the previous novels to understand it. It's pure, standalone Amos backstory featuring characters you already know. But also, if you finish out the books you'll eventually get to experience the TRUE ending of the Expanse.
    Also, I know it's already been said a million times, but Dominque Tipper deserves ALL the acting awards for her performance this season. Naomi has been forced through the most extreme spectrum of emotions this season, and Dominique is utterly killing it. It doesn't matter how many times I watch this season, she brings the tears out of me.
    This show has the best space battles ever put to film(except for, maybe, Return of the Jedi). They are so intense and thrilling but also hypnotically beautiful. This dance of physics and destruction moving faster than the human eye can follow. Amos makes an interesting observation in one of the books. He mentions that every PDC round and rail gun slug ever fired that didn't hit anything is just sailing off into the cosmos at the same speed, forever. Or until they hit something. Which is like a 0.00000000000001% chance. But it's still trippy to think about. Maybe, in a few billion years, some random alien spacecraft will get destroyed by a PDC round in the most unlikely event ever.
    Also, Naomi did all the right things you'd really want to do if you wanted to survive in hard vacuum for as long as possible. She let out all of the air in her lungs, because the pressure difference can cause them to burst. She pulled in her limbs to conserve body heat, and she had that injection of hyper-oxygenated blood to keep her brain going just long enough to get inside the Chezemoka. That scene is so stunning and was so utterly shocking the first time I ever saw it. I was pretty much reacting the way you did. :P
    Oh, and Cyn is super dead. Sorry. :P
    Another great video! Always excited for the next one!

    In defense of season 3: they thought the show was ending, so character development that wouldn't pay off till season 5 or later was the first thing to go--there wasn't going to _be_ a season 5, as far as they knew. And the result _would_ have been a pretty good end to the show if it _had_ ended there. A better ending than _most_ cancelled shows get, despite some unanswered questions. :)
