I love it how the game makes fun of several other shooter titles like Doom, Halo, and Gears of War. ALl three of those still have success today while Duke is dead in the water right now.
In the beginning of the game, Duke Nukem is playing a videogame about himself. A game where he grabs a poop from the toilet and plays around with it. In the Duke Nukem universe where he is a real person and a multiple times savior of the world, some developer has made a game depicting him playing with poop.
Presumably this was something Duke mandated in-universe, because he thought it would be funny. And that he immediately regretted, but didn't want to admit it was a bad idea so he let it slide. Or at least that's how a competent game would have spun it.

Besides Borderlands the only game I've personally (just my opinion and what I've played) enjoyed in the past 15 years was Brothers in Arms lol. Plus it's one they devoloped in house not just published. Also like Borderlands

Chances are the aliens could have greatly benefited from 300lbs pure muscle Eurasian women, but due to what we value as a society on a mass scale, they went went after big tits, big buts, and empty heads. That's why they didnt take the brothel owner in the DLC: she was smart so they didnt value her. That and she's just a badass who also kept her workers safe.

There is a beautiful timeline out there where DNF was Doom 2016 quality, and paved the way for a cultural comeback for Duke and less-serious FPSs.

I get that Dillon's supposed to be a parody of Marcus Fenix, but Marcus, roided up fridge covered in kevlar with limited personality that he is, is 300 times a better character than Captain Dillon. Marcus makes jokes and small-talk like a normal person, loses friends and family and reacts accordingly to it, questions the evil government he begrudgingly fights for, And in the end generally tries to do the right thing, or at least the best he can in a given situation. Duke Nukem Forever made me feel bad for a *_Gears of War_* character. Jesus Christ man, that's fuckin RAW.
One improvement out of many that could be applied: the ego boosters are all one click and you're done. Instead of trying to play pool or slots and eating up so much time, Duke proves how awesome he is by simply stepping up to the pool table, and pulling a one-shot win, sinking all the balls in one go. Heck, it would have been less to program since then all you've got is a quick cutscene instead of an entire minigame.
Ego could've been tied to kill streaks and comments of thanks of saved babes. They couldve just simply had a shooting gallery with a hidden room (imagine hidden rooms or secret entrances in a duke game....) that has a chained door. Blam, one blast and abbes run out - ego boosted, and secrete found, ammo in the room they ran out of. Like - its basic level design for a 90s shooter, sure. But afer 14 years of shooters being standardized, back to basics with a bit of ingenuity is what we wanted. Nah, they wanted to have minigames of GTA San Andreas length, as if DNF was a huge open world with no urgency lol

Not really, this has more to do when Gearbox was working with Valve together (They've made Opposing Force, Blue Shift and that PS2 port of Half Life 1) and was developing Counter Strike: Condition Zero (which later on landed on Ritual Entertainment and finally into Turtle Rock Studios) which ended them leaving Valve partnership due to "lack of creative control given by Valve" as they've wanted to make a single player experience for CS and no, that CS:CZ Deleted Scenes isn't from Gearbox but from Ritual Entertainment.

The major difference between DOOM 2016 and DNF is that the boys at Id Software had to take a long hard look at what they were originally making and realize that diverging so far from the spirit of DOOM that they were essentially any old shooter. With that realization they remade a lot of the game from the ground up to keep that original spirit even if the gameplay has changed quite a bit over the years. DNF is what you get when the lead creative director insists on putting damn near every new piece of gameplay from the last 12 years and changing engines constantly and at one point development actually stopping because the original studio going bankrupt, among other things, and then eventually being picked up by Gearbox to ship a frankensteins monster of a game out the door. DNF didn't just fail, it was made to fail from the start.
Doom 2016 is an arcade arena shooter with power fantasy narrative, and classic Doom is gothic sci-fi horror fps, what "spirit" are you talking about? The fact that DOOM 2016 was meant to be sci-fi CoD clone that got rectified proves only that AAA corporations have some miniscule chance to innovate or to risk, not that they naturally capable of implementing classic game archetypes. DNF story just looks like 3 good games that was sabotaged and 1 awful game that got released.

I have a weird relationship with this game. I liked it initially, in a way that it is so terrible it's good. But probably the most hilarious things about this game is how it was localised in russia. Duke got the same voice actor who voiced shrek, i just cant stop laugh of how hilarious to hear duke's catchphrases in shrek's voice.
And then in the italian version the voice actor of duke also voiced the italian version of Blazko's father in New Colossus. From saving babes to abusing his family in one second.
He did write a ton of jokes, it's just that his sense of humor is trash so every character's line being 9 times longer than it needs to is comedy gold in his eyes.
Imagine if Duke, 20 seconds into a turret section, went "Fuck this" and ripped the turret out of its base and just walked around with it. Yeah, it probably was done before even at the time, but it'd still be better than a straight turret section.

Quick question. I've seen civvie break out about 4 clips of Randy "preforming" on a stage in front of an audience. In every clip he is wearing a different child molester kind of shirt so I'm assuming they were filmed at different times. I've seen him attempt a stand up comedian performance, sing a touching song about a bigot, attempt to preform a magic trick and answer questions I'm assuming came from the audience. What in the actual hell is that about? Does he go on tour with a variety show? Who attends the variety show? Do you have to show proof that you own every borderlands game to attend the variety show? If so is there anyone out there that would be willing to attend and ask him why he insists on wearing shirts that put him at a solid 7 or 7 1/2 on the do not leave your children alone with this man because he may turn them into a lampshade scale? The theory about Duke "Asshole" in the original game and "Human" Duke in the expansion: what if the entire time of the story, Duke was in Area 51, under the torture of Doctor Proton, and the main campaign plot was from the point of view of one of his Dukenators? This explains his complete disregard for everyone and everything in the plot.
Honestly, that both drastically helps Duke's character, and raises some sad existential questions for the Dukenator. It was a jerk, sure, but it could dream, was at least briefly upset about the Twins, and did at least try to save the day on it's end. Do we give it props as a Bizarro Nukem that tried, or just write it off as a failed clone?

To this day, I'm still convinced the "Looks like you're... Fucked" line was added to the script last minute, either by or at the request of Pitchford. Even for a guy as crass and unlikable as Duke, it seems _very_ out of character for him, especially considering all the effort Duke goes through to try and save the twins (And also considering his lines for when you kill a cocooned woman are mostly on the sadder side). Randy must've either added that in while Jon St. John was away, or slipped him $50 to say it and then had it added to the scene where it would literally be _the_ most inappropriate thing for the main character to say. It honestly sounds like something Duke would've said to Dillon as he bled out, before walking away and remarking that "He won't be in the sequel." There's a lot wrong with this game, and I'd estimate about 70-80 percent of that can be traced back to Pitchford.
I think it just a case that Duke was never a well written character in the first place. In the Duke 3d he was mostly just taking one liners from famous movies. Duke never really had any kind of consistent character, he's meant to be a ladies man that every woman has the hots for yet hangs around strippers and hookers and talks like the kind of guy that a woman would blow off after 30 seconds of interacting with him. The original incubator levels worked because they seemed like a smuty but cartoony take on Aliens, it was light hearted ,the new level went with realism and that just gave it a really creepy rape fantasy vibe. The "Looks like you're... Fucked" line actually seems like it fits with 3d realms humour especially 90's Shadow Warrior.

But then everything is ramped up to the point of ridicule, and everyone pretends he's awesome while he really is a shallow guy. They couldve fixed the hive level easily, duke comes in, mows down the aliens and frees the women and tells them to get out of there. Then he gets to the twins, breaks them out, and they are too weakened to walk on their own. So duke is like "yeah im not leaving any babes behind" stacks them on his shoulder and holds them in place with one arm, while the other hand is free to gun down aliens. That way you have a perfect duke moment, two hot girls (or at least thats what they are supposed to be i guess) in one hand, a big gun in the other.

@@anonvideo738 I like your version of the Hive better than what we got but it further highlights my point, in Duke 3D he never did anything like what you're describing. Every woman he came across he either killed or gave them money to show him their boobs. We are each filling in the blanks in our head about how affected he was by these interactions, maybe he was torn up about having to kill them or maybe he just thought "well that's another girl I wont get a chance to fuck". I reckon the developers probably never gave much thought to it, it was all about what was cool in the moment. If they make another Duke game I would like them to go in the direction you have described, pistol fire being able to explode cars, explosions being escable by simply running and jump in the other direction maybe even triggering slow motion, Duke having to answer to an angry police chief etc. A real 80's action movie send up.
I find it so funny they were so worried about innovation when in reality Duke Nukem 3d wasn't great because it was technologically boundary pushing, it was great because it was creatively boundary pushing. It released near a very technologically impressive game, Quake, yet it's still fondly remembered. Tech isn't everything. Creativity and passion is.
I think Broussard was shook by what Quake was able to do and was adamant in his desire that Duke should be the pinnacle of technological design. Problem was he couldn't see that engine technology was progressing faster than the time required to make a half decent game. His other problem was Ken Silverman leaving the game industry after making a voxel based engine and failing to finish a Build successor engine.
I don't think DNF intended to be an old school FPS, but rather a Halo with Duke in it. Which makes the power armor joke pretty hypocritical, if you ask me.

You know, in spite of how shitty this game is, I still kinda love the premise of a worldwide celebrity saving the world from aliens years after his prime, just showing that he's still got it. If it was made by a developer better than Gearbox, who are physically incapable of making any good games that aren't tied to Borderlands, then it'd probably turn out pretty great.

in development is a strong phrase...more or less Duke Nukem Forever was in a limbo of being beaten around and slapped together, and delayed and changed and shafted for 15, not 14, 15 years. Consider that in 2011, Major titles like Battlefield III, Dark Souls, Skyrim, Gears 3, and oh boy, a few not so known ones like Warhammer 40k Space Marine, Starwars the Old Republic, The Binding of Isaac. All of these games, are better than Duke Nukem, in plotline, character development, gameplay, and all handle very similarly(Yes the joke is BoI is very different, Dark Souls, Gears, and Star wars are all 3rd person for the most part.) And proved it's not about how long a game's in development, but how much quality is put into it. So whilst you might be less "developed", you're smarter than whoever thought to greenlight this game, and you're far more valuable than it.

To the point where halo took over and when this was finally coming out I didn’t even buy it. I ended up buying it for 2-4$ at my local video game shop, got it so cheap because the box was broken lol. I beat the game and moments were fun but this game is an absolute mess. Randy pissford has the original DNF we all want and his plans for the franchise are killing it. Biggest issue with duke is he takes himself waaay to seriously and trys waaay to hard to be bad ass. Vs serious sam... that still trys to be cool, but does not take it seriously. As sam intentionaly makes silly jokes intended to be silly and googy. Vs duke that every joke he tells is trying to be sexual or cool 100% of the time.
29:40 From what I've heard, Captain Dylan was only added to the game to replace Bombshell as Duke's sidekick, because 3D Realms retained rights to her. I wouldn't be surprised if he was just a generic EDF soldier model that was turned into a "real" character by Gearbox.

That's one of the biggest reasons the first level of Doom 2016 resonated with people so strongly.
There is a Duke comic where Duke is sent back to WW2 and in the process of that he conforts a dying black soldier wondering if life will ever get better and Dukr tells him about Martin Luther King Jr and the March for civil rights, and then he breaks into Hitler's Bunker and turns out to be the actual reason why Hitler shot himself, he took his own life to avoid being mangled by Duke who rightfully calls him a Pussy like..... that was like 2000 times better character development than this game
The "whoa that waters cold, and deep too." will always get me just because you can hear Jon break character for a seconds by letting a few laughs sneak in.
The funny thing for me is, whenever Duke said this in my playthroughs of the game, it was never when he entered or touched any water; he said it almost every time he used a toilet and it flushed.

Duke would be all WINTER IS COMING..........YOU DOUCHE, and a beleagured father would sigh, then tell his eight year-old son to ask Duke for his autograph, because Duke needs this.

I don't know what video it was in, or a review, but Duke Nukem Forever feels like a weird compilation of almost every FPS game trend from 1998 to 2011 that feels like seeing tree rings. Physics puzzles, lighting, turrets, driving sequences, quick time events, execution kills, bullet time, berserk modes, and edgy dark horror moments. The moments in the alien hive with the impregnated women feels like something from the first Prey (2006) game (which, incidentally, works in that game because the whole tone is quite dark and apocalyptic). It's like cutting down a tree and seeing the rings inside - the years gone by.

33:00 the mistake the developers made with this game was not adding in a way for duke to save the women from the hive level because THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT OF DUKE NUKEM, SAVING THE BABES FROM THE ALIEN BASTARDS.
The developers thought Duke Nukem was a macho man who objectifies women, when in reality he's unironically one of the most respectful FPS protagonists (aside from the one that literally don't talk) who goes out of his way to save his "babes" and makes it one of his primary goals. Granted, he's pretty crass about it, but compared to characters like OG Lo Wang, he comes off as a mild jerkass.

Forever doesn't use the Megadeth version of the theme, that was only ever put on the megadeth Hidden Treasures CD and also only certain versions of the disc ((also japan got a better version of the track too)).
One reason why DNF feels so bad tonally is that Duke Nukem 64/Duke Nukem Zero Hour, two Eurocom Duke titles, reworked the character in subtle but important ways. The idea of Duke as saving babes, and saving the women of Earth being his primary passion is a Eurocom conceit. It cast him in a much more sympathetic light. He's a grub, but he's a grub with a heart of gold. In Duke 3D, the women are portrayed as unsavable. "Kill me" and all that. And to some degree DNF immediately whiplashes back to that, but with added Duke meanness. This issue of the protagonist coming across as cruel was something I felt Shadow Warrior 2 suffered from as well.
Even still in 3D he goes "Damnit" whenever you kill them, plus enemy spawns to punish you. I get what you're saying, and if it was 3D Realms' original idea it feels like they didn't understand their own character (the Hive line still feels like a forced edgy moment from Gearbox to me). We should be thankful for what Eurocom did, it's what we all see Duke as now despite DNF's writing. Haven't read the comics but I understand his characterization is more Eurocom in them too.
@Stix N' Stones well he has clarified that he made those tracks for fun, he never intended them to be used. He even named the tracks "UN for use not". he had no input on what songs were used, and where. And most of the content he made was never even used anyway.

7/10, for the dlc only. I think on the dlc, they had more focus than the initial game. The original story was something they tried to salvage over the years and it failed. The thing that still gets me with Duke Nukem Forever is that it acts like it's such a fucking awesome throwback shooter, and sometimes fans of the game even try to hype it that way, as some under-appreciated gem that plays just like the old days. Didn't realize we had a two-weapon limit in the old days. Didn't realize we had recharging shields in the old days. Didn't realize all games were brown and covered with horrible HD vomit textures in the old days. Didn't realize the old days were full of shitty vehicle sections, shitty turret sections and shitty scripted sequences. Duke Nukem Forever has the brass fucking balls to mock Halo, while stealing every aspect of Halo and CoD *and* doing them far worse than those mainstream IPs ever did. At least Halo had revolutionary open-world level design and fantastic console controls for the era. At least Halo had intelligent enemies, something DNF STILL doesn't have. At least CoD has competent shooting gameplay most of the time, and decent multiplayer pvp. Everything good about Duke 3d is not present in DNF, and everything bad about modern shooters IS present in DNF.
Also, while CoD generally isn't really my thing, I did enjoy the campaign of the first two Modern Warfare games only because its plot was so ridiculous
Don't forget them shaming Valve puzzles while making you do a "Valve style" puzzle. DNF is some edgy kid in middle school that nobody likes, acts like he stands out while copying all trends, and thinks they're hilarious. The 180 in writing between "Not my babes" and the Hive alone makes me not even consider this a Duke game.
Nah, computer programmers get too scared to touch either drugs or escort girls. It wasn't until I gave up programming (yes that old, "coding" wasn't the primary terminology) that I could start using both for an occasional treat!
I just figured it out. The "clones" were likely supposed to be actual genetic clones and not robots. But because of video game censorship laws in different countries being what they are, they would have to make them robots at some point anyways if they wanted to sell it in those countries. So they simply decided to change them from "clones" to robots from the get go. But the change was probably late in development and they couldn't or wouldn't retroactively go back and change all of the shit that doesn't make sense with robots. So that's why he has to train his robots. And why robots would have exercise equipment around. And why you can kill them by snapping their necks. And all of that. It's just really poor planning and laziness.
3:53 Not entirely sure how much you care Civvie, but the Duke curse was in full swing by the time of Duke Nukem Manhattan Project. The reason Proton wasn't in it? DNF. Proton was intended to return there, so they cut him out of DNMP. You can still tell it was meant to be Proton in the game files though because there are textures and sounds that refer to him. "du_proton" is the name of one of the sound clips of Duke talking to Morphix. As to how good or bad DNMP did? Well. It probably did fine, for a budget title, but Sunstorm interactive (who also developed the (good) expansion packs for Duke 3D) went belly up. Yeah. The development of Manhattan Project killed Sunstorm.
I can't say I totally agree regarding "if DNF had come out in 2004 it would have played like a game from 1998." Everything that people who worked on the game at that time said, the game was going to be fairly open, with lot's of weapon customization and levels more in line with the design of classic FPS. IE: Secrets, multiple paths, looping back, lot's of loot stashes and easter eggs. The game featured a faked physics engine and had some very interesting mechanics involving the fire (with several of the weapons having fire releated modes. A flame thrower with a fire bomb alt fire, etc...) This would have yielded some very dynamic stuff. The biggest killer for DNF was when George saw that dynamic lighting stuff and they were forced to basically rework the engine to do bump mapping, which later on killed the baked lighting they had, and forced them to relight everything. To say nothing of having to basically rework textures and everything to accommodation those changes.

David Brent was a tragic character, someone who, as pretentious as he was, wanted to do something with his life, failed at it, and then ended up stuck in a middling paper merchants in Slough, clinging to the idea that he was making people's lives better, when in reality no one cared. I don't think Randy is that sympathetic, and I definitely don't think he cares about people that much.

I get that Dillon's supposed to be a parody of Marcus Fenix, but Marcus, roided up fridge covered in kevlar with limited personality that he is, is 300 times a better character than Captain Dillon.
Marcus makes jokes and small-talk like a normal person, loses friends and family and reacts accordingly to it, questions the evil government he begrudgingly fights for, And in the end generally tries to do the right thing, or at least the best he can in a given situation.
Duke Nukem Forever made me feel bad for a *_Gears of War_* character. Jesus Christ man, that's fuckin RAW.
One improvement out of many that could be applied: the ego boosters are all one click and you're done. Instead of trying to play pool or slots and eating up so much time, Duke proves how awesome he is by simply stepping up to the pool table, and pulling a one-shot win, sinking all the balls in one go. Heck, it would have been less to program since then all you've got is a quick cutscene instead of an entire minigame.
Ego could've been tied to kill streaks and comments of thanks of saved babes. They couldve just simply had a shooting gallery with a hidden room (imagine hidden rooms or secret entrances in a duke game....) that has a chained door. Blam, one blast and abbes run out - ego boosted, and secrete found, ammo in the room they ran out of. Like - its basic level design for a 90s shooter, sure. But afer 14 years of shooters being standardized, back to basics with a bit of ingenuity is what we wanted.
Nah, they wanted to have minigames of GTA San Andreas length, as if DNF was a huge open world with no urgency lol

Not really, this has more to do when Gearbox was working with Valve together (They've made Opposing Force, Blue Shift and that PS2 port of Half Life 1) and was developing Counter Strike: Condition Zero (which later on landed on Ritual Entertainment and finally into Turtle Rock Studios) which ended them leaving Valve partnership due to "lack of creative control given by Valve" as they've wanted to make a single player experience for CS and no, that CS:CZ Deleted Scenes isn't from Gearbox but from Ritual Entertainment.

Valve was trying to get the Half Life IP from Sierra, and was fucking over their partners (like Gearbox) without letting them in on it. The major difference between DOOM 2016 and DNF is that the boys at Id Software had to take a long hard look at what they were originally making and realize that diverging so far from the spirit of DOOM that they were essentially any old shooter. With that realization they remade a lot of the game from the ground up to keep that original spirit even if the gameplay has changed quite a bit over the years. DNF is what you get when the lead creative director insists on putting damn near every new piece of gameplay from the last 12 years and changing engines constantly and at one point development actually stopping because the original studio going bankrupt, among other things, and then eventually being picked up by Gearbox to ship a frankensteins monster of a game out the door. DNF didn't just fail, it was made to fail from the start.
Doom 2016 is an arcade arena shooter with power fantasy narrative, and classic Doom is gothic sci-fi horror fps, what "spirit" are you talking about? The fact that DOOM 2016 was meant to be sci-fi CoD clone that got rectified proves only that AAA corporations have some miniscule chance to innovate or to risk, not that they naturally capable of implementing classic game archetypes. DNF story just looks like 3 good games that was sabotaged and 1 awful game that got released.

Imagine if Duke, 20 seconds into a turret section, went "Fuck this" and ripped the turret out of its base and just walked around with it. Yeah, it probably was done before even at the time, but it'd still be better than a straight turret section.

Quick question. I've seen civvie break out about 4 clips of Randy "preforming" on a stage in front of an audience. In every clip he is wearing a different child molester kind of shirt so I'm assuming they were filmed at different times. I've seen him attempt a stand up comedian performance, sing a touching song about a bigot, attempt to preform a magic trick and answer questions I'm assuming came from the audience. What in the actual hell is that about? Does he go on tour with a variety show? Who attends the variety show? Do you have to show proof that you own every borderlands game to attend the variety show? If so is there anyone out there that would be willing to attend and ask him why he insists on wearing shirts that put him at a solid 7 or 7 1/2 on the do not leave your children alone with this man because he may turn them into a lampshade scale? I would do it myself but I do not own borderlands and I wouldn't be allowed to attend.

The theory about Duke "Asshole" in the original game and "Human" Duke in the expansion: what if the entire time of the story, Duke was in Area 51, under the torture of Doctor Proton, and the main campaign plot was from the point of view of one of his Dukenators? This explains his complete disregard for everyone and everything in the plot.
Honestly, that both drastically helps Duke's character, and raises some sad existential questions for the Dukenator. It was a jerk, sure, but it could dream, was at least briefly upset about the Twins, and did at least try to save the day on it's end. Do we give it props as a Bizarro Nukem that tried, or just write it off as a failed clone?

Holy shit, we're actually getting a new Half-Life game in less time than it took for Duke Nukem Forever to release.
To this day, I'm still convinced the "Looks like you're... Fucked" line was added to the script last minute, either by or at the request of Pitchford. Even for a guy as crass and unlikable as Duke, it seems _very_ out of character for him, especially considering all the effort Duke goes through to try and save the twins (And also considering his lines for when you kill a cocooned woman are mostly on the sadder side). Randy must've either added that in while Jon St. John was away, or slipped him $50 to say it and then had it added to the scene where it would literally be _the_ most inappropriate thing for the main character to say. It honestly sounds like something Duke would've said to Dillon as he bled out, before walking away and remarking that "He won't be in the sequel."
There's a lot wrong with this game, and I'd estimate about 70-80 percent of that can be traced back to Pitchford.

I think it just a case that Duke was never a well written character in the first place. In the Duke 3d he was mostly just taking one liners from famous movies. Duke never really had any kind of consistent character, he's meant to be a ladies man that every woman has the hots for yet hangs around strippers and hookers and talks like the kind of guy that a woman would blow off after 30 seconds of interacting with him. The original incubator levels worked because they seemed like a smuty but cartoony take on Aliens, it was light hearted ,the new level went with realism and that just gave it a really creepy rape fantasy vibe. The "Looks like you're... Fucked" line actually seems like it fits with 3d realms humour especially 90's Shadow Warrior.

But then everything is ramped up to the point of ridicule, and everyone pretends he's awesome while he really is a shallow guy. They couldve fixed the hive level easily, duke comes in, mows down the aliens and frees the women and tells them to get out of there. Then he gets to the twins, breaks them out, and they are too weakened to walk on their own. So duke is like "yeah im not leaving any babes behind" stacks them on his shoulder and holds them in place with one arm, while the other hand is free to gun down aliens. That way you have a perfect duke moment, two hot girls (or at least thats what they are supposed to be i guess) in one hand, a big gun in the other.

@@anonvideo738 I like your version of the Hive better than what we got but it further highlights my point, in Duke 3D he never did anything like what you're describing. Every woman he came across he either killed or gave them money to show him their boobs. We are each filling in the blanks in our head about how affected he was by these interactions, maybe he was torn up about having to kill them or maybe he just thought "well that's another girl I wont get a chance to fuck". I reckon the developers probably never gave much thought to it, it was all about what was cool in the moment.
If they make another Duke game I would like them to go in the direction you have described, pistol fire being able to explode cars, explosions being escable by simply running and jump in the other direction maybe even triggering slow motion, Duke having to answer to an angry police chief etc. A real 80's action movie send up.

They're stock sounds. The shotgun shell loading sound is also in movies like Dawn of the Dead 2004.
I find it so funny they were so worried about innovation when in reality Duke Nukem 3d wasn't great because it was technologically boundary pushing, it was great because it was creatively boundary pushing. It released near a very technologically impressive game, Quake, yet it's still fondly remembered. Tech isn't everything. Creativity and passion is.
They needed the tech to make cake they were able to make.

I think Broussard was shook by what Quake was able to do and was adamant in his desire that Duke should be the pinnacle of technological design. Problem was he couldn't see that engine technology was progressing faster than the time required to make a half decent game. His other problem was Ken Silverman leaving the game industry after making a voxel based engine and failing to finish a Build successor engine.

You know, in spite of how shitty this game is, I still kinda love the premise of a worldwide celebrity saving the world from aliens years after his prime, just showing that he's still got it. If it was made by a developer better than Gearbox, who are physically incapable of making any good games that aren't tied to Borderlands, then it'd probably turn out pretty great.
It woilve and perhaps it can still be made.. Maybe if some people would mod change and revert the game? Or performing it and making it like if it was into the old times they worked onto it? I never played it but many "bad games" are bad for the developing and processing function wich oddly enough when it is related to video games they still getting decided to being released just for returning a mere profit of survivability...i always hope and never infact despise these so worst games of all time friend as I still presume something can still be obtained after all of this maybe in the future or by trying!

@@awesomeMSE Saints Row 3 and 4 don't sit well with me. 3 is the series jumping the shark while 4 is hang-gliding over the shark tank and dropping a deuce in it just because. It's the point when the series stopped being an irreverent and humorous GTA clone to a devteam being as outlandishly over the top and juvenile as possible just for the sake of it and cutting all the narrative and pacing corners they could get away with.

Friendly reminder that Duke Nukem Forever was literally in development for the time that it takes for a newborn to reach highschool, 14 years, and is legitimately older than me, and some of the people watching this video
in development is a strong phrase...more or less Duke Nukem Forever was in a limbo of being beaten around and slapped together, and delayed and changed and shafted for 15, not 14, 15 years. Consider that in 2011, Major titles like Battlefield III, Dark Souls, Skyrim, Gears 3, and oh boy, a few not so known ones like Warhammer 40k Space Marine, Starwars the Old Republic, The Binding of Isaac. All of these games, are better than Duke Nukem, in plotline, character development, gameplay, and all handle very similarly(Yes the joke is BoI is very different, Dark Souls, Gears, and Star wars are all 3rd person for the most part.) And proved it's not about how long a game's in development, but how much quality is put into it. So whilst you might be less "developed", you're smarter than whoever thought to greenlight this game, and you're far more valuable than it.

To the point where halo took over and when this was finally coming out I didn’t even buy it. I ended up buying it for 2-4$ at my local video game shop, got it so cheap because the box was broken lol. I beat the game and moments were fun but this game is an absolute mess. Randy pissford has the original DNF we all want and his plans for the franchise are killing it. Fuck pissford lol I’ve never supported him and never will.

Biggest issue with duke is he takes himself waaay to seriously and trys waaay to hard to be bad ass. Vs serious sam... that still trys to be cool, but does not take it seriously. As sam intentionaly makes silly jokes intended to be silly and googy. Vs duke that every joke he tells is trying to be sexual or cool 100% of the time.

You can have the ditzy girls, but treat them as humans. Duke can be a stupid, macho, one-liner machine, but he still needs to care about human life and be consistent about it.

He kicks the fucking bike in a fury and starts gacking pig cops with his hand cannon. You can feel the rage. That's what Duke needed as a character. Some emotional expression. That's one of the biggest reasons the first level of Doom 2016 resonated with people so strongly.
There is a Duke comic where Duke is sent back to WW2 and in the process of that he conforts a dying black soldier wondering if life will ever get better and Dukr tells him about Martin Luther King Jr and the March for civil rights, and then he breaks into Hitler's Bunker and turns out to be the actual reason why Hitler shot himself, he took his own life to avoid being mangled by Duke who rightfully calls him a Pussy like..... that was like 2000 times better character development than this game

Imagine if Duke Nukem Forever was a satire about an asshole that saves the world and really wears out his welcome, but still gets whatever he wants because we owe him our lives. What if every other character in the game acted like a normal human, but Duke is still wandering around screaming 16 year-old catchphrases stolen from movies everybody's seen?
Duke would be all WINTER IS COMING..........YOU DOUCHE, and a beleagured father would sigh, then tell his eight year-old son to ask Duke for his autograph, because Duke needs this.
And the game ends with Duke coming to terms with his age and saving the world and his babes in the process.

I don't know what video it was in, or a review, but Duke Nukem Forever feels like a weird compilation of almost every FPS game trend from 1998 to 2011 that feels like seeing tree rings. Physics puzzles, lighting, turrets, driving sequences, quick time events, execution kills, bullet time, berserk modes, and edgy dark horror moments. The moments in the alien hive with the impregnated women feels like something from the first Prey (2006) game (which, incidentally, works in that game because the whole tone is quite dark and apocalyptic). It's like cutting down a tree and seeing the rings inside - the years gone by.
See randy wanted all the new shit so they statred over again and again cramming the game till it almost pops

33:00 the mistake the developers made with this game was not adding in a way for duke to save the women from the hive level because THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT OF DUKE NUKEM, SAVING THE BABES FROM THE ALIEN BASTARDS.
The developers thought Duke Nukem was a macho man who objectifies women, when in reality he's unironically one of the most respectful FPS protagonists (aside from the one that literally don't talk) who goes out of his way to save his "babes" and makes it one of his primary goals. Granted, he's pretty crass about it, but compared to characters like OG Lo Wang, he comes off as a mild jerkass.

Nasty Biscuit Because the Hoover Dam serves as an important location for both games. And it’s disappointing to see Duke Nukem Forever not doing anything interesting with the location. Especially since this is a real world location that I have been to and Marveled at when I was there.

The beauty is that it works both if duke knows Planck lengths or is completely oblivious too. If he’s just macho meathead and thinks she’s talking about a plank of wood, it’s funny. If he knows a bit better and is being intentionally self-deprecating. It’s amusing too. especially if he’s packing; it’s like that trope of huge fuck-off things named things like “tiny” or “mister little”.

Rewatching this again at the end of 2021, I still find myself wishing we got the Dylan from the 2001 trailer. At least if Duke had a straight man to play off, it might've been slightly more tolerable, even if it's still otherwise completely the same mess.

Forever doesn't use the Megadeth version of the theme, that was only ever put on the megadeth Hidden Treasures CD and also only certain versions of the disc ((also japan got a better version of the track too)).
Also, the Japanese dub of the game, while heavily censored (though that may actually be a good thing), has Gendo Ikari as Duke Nukem.
One reason why DNF feels so bad tonally is that Duke Nukem 64/Duke Nukem Zero Hour, two Eurocom Duke titles, reworked the character in subtle but important ways. The idea of Duke as saving babes, and saving the women of Earth being his primary passion is a Eurocom conceit. It cast him in a much more sympathetic light. He's a grub, but he's a grub with a heart of gold. In Duke 3D, the women are portrayed as unsavable. "Kill me" and all that. And to some degree DNF immediately whiplashes back to that, but with added Duke meanness.
This issue of the protagonist coming across as cruel was something I felt Shadow Warrior 2 suffered from as well.
Even still in 3D he goes "Damnit" whenever you kill them, plus enemy spawns to punish you. I get what you're saying, and if it was 3D Realms' original idea it feels like they didn't understand their own character (the Hive line still feels like a forced edgy moment from Gearbox to me).
We should be thankful for what Eurocom did, it's what we all see Duke as now despite DNF's writing. Haven't read the comics but I understand his characterization is more Eurocom in them too.

I think on the dlc, they had more focus than the initial game. The original story was something they tried to salvage over the years and it failed.

The line from the game is probably the one of the most serious meme-able lines and attributes to why the Clone Troopers are my favorite thing from Star Wars.

The thing that still gets me with Duke Nukem Forever is that it acts like it's such a fucking awesome throwback shooter, and sometimes fans of the game even try to hype it that way, as some under-appreciated gem that plays just like the old days. Didn't realize we had a two-weapon limit in the old days. Didn't realize we had recharging shields in the old days. Didn't realize all games were brown and covered with horrible HD vomit textures in the old days. Didn't realize the old days were full of shitty vehicle sections, shitty turret sections and shitty scripted sequences.
Duke Nukem Forever has the brass fucking balls to mock Halo, while stealing every aspect of Halo and CoD *and* doing them far worse than those mainstream IPs ever did. At least Halo had revolutionary open-world level design and fantastic console controls for the era. At least Halo had intelligent enemies, something DNF STILL doesn't have. At least CoD has competent shooting gameplay most of the time, and decent multiplayer pvp.
Everything good about Duke 3d is not present in DNF, and everything bad about modern shooters IS present in DNF.
Also, while CoD generally isn't really my thing, I did enjoy the campaign of the first two Modern Warfare games only because its plot was so ridiculous
Don't forget them shaming Valve puzzles while making you do a "Valve style" puzzle. DNF is some edgy kid in middle school that nobody likes, acts like he stands out while copying all trends, and thinks they're hilarious.
The 180 in writing between "Not my babes" and the Hive alone makes me not even consider this a Duke game.

I just figured it out. The "clones" were likely supposed to be actual genetic clones and not robots. But because of video game censorship laws in different countries being what they are, they would have to make them robots at some point anyways if they wanted to sell it in those countries.
So they simply decided to change them from "clones" to robots from the get go. But the change was probably late in development and they couldn't or wouldn't retroactively go back and change all of the shit that doesn't make sense with robots. So that's why he has to train his robots. And why robots would have exercise equipment around. And why you can kill them by snapping their necks. And all of that. It's just really poor planning and laziness.

Not entirely sure how much you care Civvie, but the Duke curse was in full swing by the time of Duke Nukem Manhattan Project. The reason Proton wasn't in it? DNF. Proton was intended to return there, so they cut him out of DNMP. You can still tell it was meant to be Proton in the game files though because there are textures and sounds that refer to him. "du_proton" is the name of one of the sound clips of Duke talking to Morphix.
As to how good or bad DNMP did? Well. It probably did fine, for a budget title, but Sunstorm interactive (who also developed the (good) expansion packs for Duke 3D) went belly up. Yeah. The development of Manhattan Project killed Sunstorm.
I can't say I totally agree regarding "if DNF had come out in 2004 it would have played like a game from 1998." Everything that people who worked on the game at that time said, the game was going to be fairly open, with lot's of weapon customization and levels more in line with the design of classic FPS. IE: Secrets, multiple paths, looping back, lot's of loot stashes and easter eggs. The game featured a faked physics engine and had some very interesting mechanics involving the fire (with several of the weapons having fire releated modes. A flame thrower with a fire bomb alt fire, etc...) This would have yielded some very dynamic stuff.
The biggest killer for DNF was when George saw that dynamic lighting stuff and they were forced to basically rework the engine to do bump mapping, which later on killed the baked lighting they had, and forced them to relight everything. To say nothing of having to basically rework textures and everything to accommodation those changes.
