    I totally admire your stance in not selling the problem onto someone else. Awesome attitude. The dealer even suggesting that course of action shows their lack of ethics - and exposes the fact they likely knew about the problem. I hope you’re getting on great with the car! I hope you’re driving it like you stole it in 2021. :)

    So sorry to hear your bad experience, hate all these dishonest car dealerships!! I had a bad experience similar to your situation long time ago. I bought a salvage title BMW 318is from a shady dealer and how I regretted it so much!! Well, I will be checking-in to your channel and probably will learn a lot from your videos. I can’t wait to see your 997 fully rebuilt! Good luck!

    Hi, I Had the same issue with my 997.1 2005, I drove the car until the engine died, now it is in my garage, I have 3 or 4 choices, to rebuilt engine, to replace the engine with a used one (not very good idea as it may have issues as well); to sell the car for parts or to sell it to the junk yard for $1,000. I agreed with your comment about expending 20K rebuilding the engine when my market value is around 18K it makes no sense; If I am going to rebuilt it, I am going to keep it forever and pass it to my grandchildren.

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yup, that's the math for folks in this situation. Cut and invest in a 997.2 which is a better platform. Or what I chose, which was to take on a project and build an engine and make it mine. Both are tough choices. If you've never built an engine, I'd be careful about choosing the later. This it a tough build. Makes it worth it that much more though.

      not sure where you are with your decision? i am 51 years old and would like to tinker with a porsche engine, try my hands on a rebuild?? before you decide to junk yard, if you don't mind reaching out, i would like to buy your porsche and give it a shot?? i'm in florida, i'm sure you are many miles away, that's how it goes: nothing ever as easy as it should be but sometimes worth it in the end! thanks!

      @@997Dad The .2s also suffer from bore scoring. There's a thread on Rennlist about the bottom part of the block "shrinking" over time. That causes seizures while the BS on the .1 still allows you to drive the car.

    im building a 3.4 for my fathers 2000 996. the engine "D" chunked and LN Engineering is a must when dealing with this era Porsche. the Owner we got the car from said the motor was broke and knew whats involved with the repair. He picked up a long block and did the IMS bearing and installed it, got about two thousand miles out of it before the "D" chunk (no cylinder scoring when it broke). we got the car for a song and a dance, removed and tore down the engine and who ever sold him the long block had hammered strips of metal into the water jacket where to beef it up where it finally broke. he tried to get the company to warranty the engine but they wouldn't. some place in New Jersey. Any way, LN is fitting the case half's with 3.8 liter bores and new pistons with rings and clips, about $6,000 also gonna ad their updated IMS, new rods and their recommended head gaskets. all fuel injection, cams and ecu programing can stay stock up to the 3.8 build. With everything in the engine and all the issues addressed for good, gonna be $10'000. Then you can enjoy the 996 with out cringing every time you let the clutch out.

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha, that story is way funnier than mine. Picturing some guy hammering metal strips into the aluminum block. 🔨 Glad LN got you straightened out. All the other options were fairly sketchy, which is fine for a Toyota but seem out of step with the complexities of a flat 6.

    I previewed a few of your video's this one makes me the most sad. I have purchased a 997.1 about a year ago, blown motor, but I was willing to take a gamble on the the car assuming I could fix for fun and be under budget. I live in Hawaii, no one wanted to help me except for the dealer, but their solution was new a crate motor for 35,000. I contacted every repair shop local to me and started calling places in California and ran across 9xx motor in long beach and the owner donated his time over the phone to help me diagnose the car and it turned out it was not a cracked block or head only a blown engine cooler. I feel your pain as I am a single dad with a 7 year old boy and a Computer engineer during the day. I had purchased car which was not running but was only supposed to have a bad engine and it turned out the list of deferred items was long. I had my car apart more that once on the floor of my garage. I look forward to seeing your progress. good luck! I can tell you this. once you get sorted and it runs good, you will be happy.

    1st things first, watch this video at 1.25 playback speed. You’re welcome. That said, sorry for your misfortune but much respect for deciding to take it on in your own garage. Also for not pawning the problem off on someone else, which obviously is what the previous owner did, or at least the dealership. I will be entering the 997 market soon with my eyes on the 2nd gen 997.2 to avoid the IMS. But the way prices have jumped lately, I might have to look at a 997.1. I'm in a similar position, programmer as well, they must see us coming. I have a 2002 996 C4S with bore scoring on cylinder 6. The cost in the US of $30k for a full rebuild seems high. In the UK I was quoted £5k which is around $7k USD to replace cylinders 3-6 on the right bank of the engine, which is typically the affected side, not cheap but doable.
    I'm sitting on my car as a keeper and won't pass the problem on, heck, if I never find the spare money, I'll keep it in my garage for 20 years and give it to my kids, hopefully by then a 40 year old classic Porsche 911 will be worth something even with the engine need rebuilding!
    Bottom line is I took it on and will deal with it, the guy who sold it to me can find his own karma.
    You're not alone, shit happens, don't beat yourself up about it, nobody died, you still have a Porsche 911, remember these cars were $100k when new, rebuild the engine and it will be like new.

    This cancer called bore score is my biggest fear. I just bought an early '00 996 w/54k miles and so far so good but only 500 miles into my ownership. I didn't get a PPI because my, the willing seller and local shops schedules didn't work so I would have lost the deal. I relied on my inspection ability, research and my gut feel about the seller's honesty. Prior to my purchase I looked at ~20 examples and clearly could tell the ones that had some degree of problems. When it comes to dealers, I'd say 4 out of 5 dealers range from mildly unethical to outright crooks. It is that bad. The few good dealers charge a premium and maybe they deserve it. I'm surprised your dealer even offered $1500 but that likely would include a release from further action on your part (maybe that's why you didn't leave them a Yelp review?).
    I looked up your dealer's Yelp reviews and I would have avoided them. Love'em or hate'em, Yelp can tell you much about who you plan to do business with. Sort the bad reviews to the top and pay special attention to how the dealer handles their bad reviews. Do they comment and offer a solution? It's pretty easy to glean out the fake 5* reviews.

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup all of that is true. I read up quite a bit and saw no signs of problems when I purchased. There was extensive history and I even contacted the mechanic and he had no idea it was an issue either. So, oil consumption was my only clue.

    Why don't people call it what it is - Porsche engineering is utter dog's dump!
    Show me a Toyota 2JZ or Nissan 6 cylinder DETT engine that has IMS bearing issues, or common cylinder wall scoring resulting in a $20-30k engine rebuild. Only with Porsche!

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I understand your point, I'm an engineer too and know there isn't a car on the planet free from engineering defects. Are these scoring and IMS issues engineering defects? Yes. 100%. Porsche made some poor decisions and allowed it to carry on way too long. As for the rebuild price tag, it don't know any exotic that has a cheap rebuild price tag. I enjoyed it purely from a learning standpoint and I enjoyed finding these and several other minor defects but hey, maybe I'm a little nutty that way. It's like finding defects in the Linux code base.

    At the end i was so scared about bore scoring issue that i gave up on the idea of purchasing one.
    Then i found a 997 S with a totally new rebuilt motor done by a professional with cast iron cylinder sleeves and the larger IMS (with a 2 years warranty).
    The owner before me was in a similar situation as you, excepting the bore issue came out one month after he took the car so the dealer afraid of legal proceeding took it back and refund him.
    Then the dealer had no other choice to do a motor exchange at a specialized garage and resold the car immediately after , i just came at the right time.

      SUMMARY
      This looks to be a good running and driving Porsche Cayman but it has issues of note. There are scratches all around the vehicle. There are dings on the left rocker panel. There are a number of rock chips in the paint - see pictures. The left quarter panel has been spot repaired between the wheel arch and the intake vent. The headlights have rock chips and the right headlight is sun weathered at the bottom. Both door mirrors have rock chips. There are rock chips all over the hood. There are rock chips on the bottom part of both doors. The steering wheel shows signs of wear. The driver seat shows wear. The inner door panels show wear consistent with age and mileage. The interior trim shows normal wear consistent with age and mileage. The center console shows wear. I found one issue on the test drive. There is a whining noise coming from the drive line that gets louder as the RPMs get higher. When I press the clutch in, no matter what speed, the sound goes away. The engine had plenty of power and there were no misfires or excessive smoking. The transmission shifted as designed with no harsh engagement or slipping. The steering was responsive and the suspension was firm and the vehicle handled well. There were no abnormal vibrations or odd noises. The brakes were firm with no pulsation felt. There were no leaks found to the underside of the vehicle. I hooked up my Scan Tool to the computer system and found no current or pending codes. All of the live data looked good with no issues reported. Overall a decent vehicle. See below and pictures for more info.

    I’m in the market for a 997.1 because it’s possibly the best value at the moment. Have driven several recently. Great cars. Honestly, this video scared the shit out of me. My dealer said high-mileage 997.1 without scoring are unlikely to develop it. Not sure now. Maybe it’ll be a turbo instead. I’m sorry this is happening. I checked out a car from JM online today. No longer a candidate. Looking forward to seeing how this all works out. Best wishes.

    Curious how the dealer would know of metal failure in the engine. You stated you drove it home/2 months and 1000 miles? Unless they checked with the camera that you had I don’t see why they are at fault.

      If you were a Ford Pinto dealer and you were unaware of the problems they might have then maybe you should not be a dealer of Pintos. This problem in the Porsche world is just as infamous. Turning a blind eye to it doesn't get you off the hook, morally. If I sold you a car with a damaged engine at full price would you be ok with that? That feels right to you? Good luck with that take on life.

  • @laapulsford

    Is it possible to track down the previous owners of the 911? It might be they sold the car to the dealer and the dealer was made aware of the bore scoring. If you could prove this, a letter from a lawyer might change the position of the Car dealer.

    Greetings from the UK. I feel your pain sir. I always aspired to a Porsche motor car as they had the reputation as "The super car you can use every day" with a reputation for high quality engineering & "hewn from granite" build quality. I had a Boxster from new 2001-04 then a new 997 which I kept till 2016. Of course Porsche were able to hide the issues of IMS & bore scoring of the M96/97 from the public for many years especially here in the UK. I have to admit it really spoilt the enjoyment of owning the 997 as I lived in fear of imminent IMS failure and in the case of bore score its not a case if "IF" but "When" as all M96/97's will suffer from it prematurely.

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes fear does spoil the enjoyment. It's especially true in this case where a rebuild will outstrip the value of the car 98% of the time. If rebuilds were half the price I think that would bring more value and enjoyment.

    • @garysimpson3900
      @garysimpson3900 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@997Dad Here in the UK the leading experts are a firm in Bolton called Hartech. To upgrade the IMS to the largest post 2006 type & 6 new closed deck Nikasil cylinders is going to cost around £13,000. At $1.34 to the UK pound at today's rate that is $17400. If you need new pistons, valves & con rods you can add to that price.

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is a dipstick in the 996!
    20 000 - 30 000 ... bulshit!
    You can rebuild that engine well below 10 000 if you got two healthy hands. You can get a new crate engine with about 20 000 and an accident engine at around 8000-10 000.

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's my point. The options available to the average person is 20k. If you want to fix the issues permanently you will not be able to do that much below 10k even by hand. I did it and the math.

    Bro, a simple 300$ PPI would of steered you clear of this example. Bore scoring is pretty common on S models - 996/997. Did you not do your research on these models prior to being seriously interested?? It's all over the net.

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your point is pretty valid. It's also my point. Let me be the poster child of dumb shit. A couple mistakes in thinking I made were 1) I was aware of this model's problems and thought a dealership would have it inspected. Wrong. 2) If it showed no symptoms, which I knew well from my research, that it wasn't suffering from bore score. Also Wrong! The last point I'll mention is with any car I bought, I'm the warranty, so I was willing to bear the risk.

    • @AOWGroundBeef
      @AOWGroundBeef 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@997Dad His point is not valid...a $300 PPI would NOT have caught this. You will not get a serious PPI with the sump dropped and scoping from below (NOT THE SPARK PLUG HOLES) for $300.....with full scoping and compression testing, you are talking more like $1k for a PPI.

    • @997Dad
      @997Dad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was acknowledging the PPI point not the price. Though in this case even a simple bore scope would have been enough.

    • @AOWGroundBeef
      @AOWGroundBeef 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@997Dad As you've learned, there is nothing simple about borescoping one of these. Looking through the spark plug holes is the easiest but MISSES many cases of bore scoring. The only real way is through the bottom and it is hard to find a seller that will let you do that even if they have nothing to hide. It may have caught it in this case, but if you'd passed on this one, you still could have been burned with another. I think you are doing a great job and I hope I face my own ultimate rebuild with such aplomb. I've been to Jake's class and I've go this videos, but actually removing and rebuilding my motor is another thing. I am in CT, too...would have loved to have watched/assisted this process.

    You bought a car as is, and the dealer didn't actively try to hide anything, they simply didn't do the research you should have done. This is on you, take responsibility instead of blaming them. There's no way an average used car dealer, hell even a Porsche dealership, is going to bore snake piston 6 etc.
