  • "Billy Pigg, an exceptional traditional musician by any standards, was even more intriguing because he played a relatively rare instrument, the Northumbrian pipes. What is more, he played as no piper before had ever played, and probably no piper ever will. His wild lyrical style was his own.
Captured on tape during informal sessions and public performances over the years by Foster Charlton, for many years secretary of the Northumbrian Pipers' Society, this posthumous tribute to a great musician was compiled by Bill Leader with the invaluable advice and assistance of Foster Charlton, Colin Ross, Ray Fisher, Bill Charlton, the late Will Cocks, Tommy Breckons, the London branch of the Northumbrian Pipers' Society and Mrs Pigg.
The normal chanter on a set of Northumbrian pipes is tuned to a nominal G which is between concert F and F*. Billy Pigg sometimes retuned his drones and played a nominal A and a nominal D. The A tuning he used for tunes with a Scottish Flavour. "
