Pro Tip: The Garmin Topoactive maps included on the 66sr and 66i along with the Garmin U.S/Canada TOPO maps on the 66st do NOT include a searchable address database. The workaround is to buy the Garmin Cycle Maps for your region ($19.99 USD). I needed this anyways as I have the 66s which only includes the worldwide basemap. In my case the Garmin U.S/Canada Cycle map I bought has fully routable roads and trails, a full POI database, and full address database. Hope this helps someone.
Good morning. I bought the Gamin NA Cycle maps ($19.99) and used Express to install the files onto my SD card in my 66i but when I go to configure maps, I cannot see the option. What is it called and how do you enable the Cycle maps? Thanks in advance
Good morning, I have a GpsMap 66sr which is a tool especially aimed at those trekking, the tool offers different functions but I do not understand why it lacks two fundamental functions for me (which instead I find on the Edge 1030 that I use for mtb) the possibility to navigate a track loaded by me and the function of "Alarm off track" ! I would like to ask whether it is possible in future for them to be implemented!
Hi Jim. Would you recommend the Backroads maps? I’m in Ontario and would like the routing availability and the off-road ATV trails. The only version that’s available (quickly) is the eastern Canada sdcard. A little pricey but if it’s worth the investment I think it’ll be a good addition. Thanks for your videos. They are helping me learn the GPS. Cheers.
I’ve been using backroads for a little while and I’ve been happy with the products over the years including their paper map books. I found that the map bundle they sell on SD card is worth it as you can download updates to the card up to a year. Of course depending on the area the “freshness” of a map section will vary but have not run into that situation very often.
My 66st came with TopoActive maps which do route. They are exactly like the maps Garmin uses on its bicycle GPS units. I am in England and my 66st has TopoActive Europe maps.
i bought a sd card from backroadmaps for canada, you also have opentreetmap IMG file you can find. lately the garmin provided maps out of the box are "ok" but depending on what you are doing, a better map is always better
Hey Jim, I'm between the Montana's and 66. Definitely want inReach. Hoping to stay smaller for hiking, but I am also a Firefighter in an area where we can get severe weather that knocks out cell service and therefore also the navigation devices on our trucks. Would you recommend either device as a stand in, or just get the 66i and a separate dedicated GPS for driving in that case? Thanks!
I’m going to recommend something crazy but I think the 66 series is an amazing choice but also think about the ZOLEO as the add-on when you need it. I personally think that the Montana series is not suitable for hiking more for the power sport segment from what you’ve described and what I’ve done similar to you

Thanks for the info on turn-by-turn. It's a question I've wanted answered, but even the Garmin website doesn't seem to explain it!

Which would you use for hiking? The 66 or Montana 700
66 for hiking. Carabiner clip attachment, can use with gloves, all same functions with smartphone and battery flexibility.
Doesn’t Garmin offer City Navigator? If you purchase and load it to the device via Garmin Express you can navigate similar to a Montana 700 series.
Correct - you can replace the pre-loaded map with City Navigator or compatible maps on SD cards that offer routable navigation.
Where do you get these other maps?

Great video! Thank you!

@@AvoidingChores Cool thank you I appreciate that! I will definitely check it out.
Thank you sir. 💯
Off topic question - whilst using the 66 on my motorcycle- when stationary, the map spins out of control. Have you seen this, and is there a fix?
Not really, depending where you are, the device is trying to get a signal so you see that “drift” as it tried to figure out the position
Gpsmap 66 discontinued already. Any idea why?
Huh I just checked and it looks like the 66i is the only option. Maybe a sign the 68 is coming soon
Jim, i have gpsmap 66s. Can i install topoactive from garmin? Will it work? I want topoactive from South america
Topo maps will display but probably not do the turn by turn direction unless you have a routable map loaded also.
I can't connect to wifi although I followed your instructions, it still won't connect
Can i use for driving
Yes, provided that the map you use supports turn by turn directions
I want navigation for my hiking trail not the road. I have an iphone for that lol
Gotta download CN map first b4 it’ll work.
