This song is a very unique vibe. It makes me feel like I'm on a boat going down a river deep in the African jungle, probably because of the drums, flute, and crickets.
It's the space. There's space for each instrument to be heard and to breathe. It's not a constant barrage. You can contemplate. Similarly, the albums back in those days had an appreciable gap between tracks. A silence for you to digest and in which to cleanse your aural palate before the next track started. Now music production is like being fucked by a 17-year-old bogan. All frenzied attack with no dynamic or nuance. And then it's over. And straight into the next assault.
You've gotta start with quality composition to begin with. You could have the best production money can buy, it will never change the fact that 99.9% of today's soulless music just sucks!
@@JP-ec9rl If you're looking for modern music with some of the best production you should listen to porcupine tree. Glass arm shattering is a good song to listen to.

In 1985, I was 14 years old, and on that summer afternoon, i was playing cards with my friend at his home... and suddently this Song came up on the radio. I Said: "Stop everything! What music is this?... Dire Straits?... I want this Record!!!"
62 yrs here, had this album on vinyl...then CD, now online...just as spectacular as it was..and still is...Those drums altering side to side sounds wonderful on headphones...
I am a hundred percent convinced that Knopfler was sent by God so he could translate to us earthlings the magical sounds that abound in heaven. Hallelujah
1986 No.1 ALBUM: Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms After all the miscellaneous greatest hits albums that marked quite a few of my birthdays in the deep dark Seventies, the Eighties were now making up for that with some truly iconic releases which last even up to now. I had ‘Brothers In Arms’ on cassette which meant it was one of those albums which was in my Walkman while cycling around on my black and gold Raieigh Burner. This was a good move as, if I’d had the vinyl edition then half the tracks would have been hacked to pieces to make them fit on that format. The CD age was dawning and this was one way they could bolster the sales of this new magical sorcery. At this point, CD players would have cost this arm and that leg. I would have to wait a few more years before I got the chance to own one. So I got the full versions without the expense, even though half of side 2 was blank so had to constantly fast forward to the end before flipping it back over. The album itself was musically immense, and even though the big hits got a bit tiresome due to constantly being rammed through the radio speakers on the airwaves, the other tracks made up for it. #mymusicalroadto50
I flipped my new CD into my player while backpacking in Silver Creek in the Sierra in 86. I had not listened to it yet. I was so mind blown I had to sit and listen to the whole thing again.. this song took the prize. Especially the solos.
"Nothing gonna stop them as the day follows the night Right becomes wrong, the left becomes the right And they sing as they march with their flags unfurled Today in the mountains, tomorrow the world" Very wise words
In 1985 or '86 DS played outdoors in Cleveland, OH. Took a break, came back for the second half. This was the first song, and amazingly the humidity had risen as dark came on, and so a natural fog accentuated the fog machine and that intro began … eerie, chilling, magical.
Listened to this track over and over again whilst traversing through thick jungle canopies on one side and the precipitous cliff on the other plunging onto a raging river below in the 80's through the Wild West of Asia. It was a hellhole of bandits, guerrillas, paramilitary, the military, loony deserters reminiscent of colonel Kurtz, Maoist rebels and secessionist groups fighting the government supported by the U.S. It was dangerous, it was unforgettable and this song brings me back to those days. Mark knopler has captured the surrealism of those times with this song. He's a genius.
great song. the whole album is as good too. my heart sinks remembering wondering if my daddy will be one of those that make it home from the war. it was many moons ago but you always remember that feeling deep down in your gut. 😶
Yeah, I was that dad as well. My kids are always amazed when they here a song like this in a movie or video game. Takes en right back to riding with dad blasting tunes in the car.
Used to always play this song as I rode over a bridge going south or north over the Colorado River near Moab, Utah. As a salesman I was always on the road or in an airplane. Loved this, would think of my horse and splashing him through water. He was too often waiting in the pasture for our adventures.
I love the 3rd verse, the opening is so good. Just the whole transition from the guitar solo into that verse is just so smooth. Takes a tiny break, and then... I mean how can you not sing along to that?
This is my favourite song ever. No exaggeration. It has my favourite solos by Mark and I love the sound of the band on this album. Dire Straits never sounded better than on Brothers in arms in my opinion (Love over Gold runs a close second).
Simply EXTRAORDINARY..... brings to life a STORY.... I imagine a Central/ South American guerilla every time... AMAZING guitar and effects/ composition
This album was pretty fresh in 1986, and I was riding a tour bus up the coast of Peru to Trujillo. Watching the sand dunes, and pyramids as we were driving by. It was so surreal. This music was familiar company by the time the trip was up.
I bought the cd version back in 1985. This song is one of the best! I wonder if this is some mercenaries on a patrol boat across the Mekong river? You can hear the echoing sound of rifles firing in the background. There is the sound of an asian flute
This song I always listen on big speakers, only then You can feel the real base sound, on small speaker it sounds little harsh. I love the production of Dire Straits because every instrument has its own space and clarity. I don't know how record the tracks, every instruments on its own channel or in group, but it's really great.

Dire Straits were indeed the sultans of swing.
This album is genius you can't choose the best song !
I can: "Ride Across the River."
I'm a soldier of freedom in the army of man
We are the chosen, we're the partisan
The cause it is noble and the cause it is just
We are ready to pay with our lives if we must
Gonna ride across the river deep and wide
Ride across the river to the other side
I'm a soldier of fortune, I'm a dog of war
And we don't give a damn who the killing is for
It's the same old story with a different name
Death or glory, it's the killing game
Gonna ride across the river deep and wide
Ride across the river to the other side
Nothing gonna stop them as the day follows the night
Right becomes wrong, the left becomes the right
And they sing as they march with their flags unfurled
Today in the mountains, tomorrow the world
Gonna ride across the river deep and wide
Ride across the river to the other side
