I used to be an x-ray machine engineer. We used to take the old ones, scrape out the lead, pull out the copper. We would like $500 per unit. Sometimes we would scrap 10 in a day.
The recycling company will make money, he made money, and the supply of recycled metal went up therefore reducing the price of recycled metal which will likely lead to more people/companies using the recycled metal over new metal since it's gone down in price. Now the actual percentage that this tiny amount of metal lowered prices is probably.0000000000000000001%, but every little bit helps!

They don't accept them often based on regulations per area. It is to prevent ease of stealing units for a quick fix causing thousands in repairs for a 20$ bag of drugs. They are right though and you can cut all that #1 copper off them suckers and turn it in, well worth the 2 minutes with a sawzaw you only need a license to turn in the coils. Everything can be broken down but only the copper is worth breaking down. The fin/coil are nice but most of the time require certs to scrap. Also don't just cut into random old units, it's a fairly common practice to pump them down. This means it stops the flow out and traps the refrigerant inside of the compressor/coils. 🧨 It will be one hell of a surprise to saw into a charged unit very likely to cause injury or provide you with an oil bath/not so healthy wah wah gas to breathe in. Very easy to get seriously burned in the matter of a second or two.
Reality Check: Recycling doesn't make the metal cheaper in the future, it increases profits for the manufacturers. I'm still all for recycling, though.

If you take the time to separate metals, you can make a lot more money. Copper, aluminium, stainless steel, etc. It can be very lucrative, but it's also dirty and heavy work most of the time.
In germany you have to be lucky to not PAY money to get rid of old metal. Thats why people over here steal massive amounts of copper cables from traintracks because thats the only way to get money from scrap metal
If they separated half of that into it's proper metal categories, Short steel, mixed steel, aluminum, etc. they easily would've doubled it. Take it from someone who used to run a salvage/scrap yard himself, if we don't know what exactly is on your load when we add it to the pile, we're giving you the cheapest available category that applies to half your load. Not to scam you, but so we don't get scammed by the corporations buying from us.
I was at this same recycling plant, MCR, like, maybe 2 weeks ago. They gave us 60 bucks for almost twice what you dropped. Don't use MCR. Their prices fluctuate like CRAZY. And yes, we were dumping in the same pile as you :)

I took a 01 superduty truck cab, just shy of a ton and made about 70 bucks, mcr is generally where I go, tho for a whole car with a motor you can get at least 500 from pick a part down the road on Geneva, been going to mcr since I was a kid, always wanted to be the guy in the trackho, cool to see our local central utah county scrap yard at work
In Canada it would be a lot more money aswell . The price fluctuates day to day but still prob about triple and I live 30 mins from border to USA . Funny how it works.
Well you got the lowest rate for many premium items in the mess because it was all lumped together. If you had gold bars in the mix you still would get 3.5 cents a pound from that yard
If all of these are old iron scrap I can get 1000 $ for this weight. But it had steel, aluminium and copper in it. They are way more expensive than simple iron.
Dont really know about way of selling scrap metal in US. But just in stupid interst, where i live just selling it as scraps is hundreds times cheaper then sorting it to Non-ferrous metals. For example selling 40 kilos of scraps codt around as much as selling 1 kilo of copper. And aluminium, stainless steel, brass etc is way way up in terms of price. The question errupted only because of ac units, that are full of copper inside.
If it doesn't make metal cheaper to buy back and only makes companies more wealthy and they're not giving back to the community, then forget about recycling.

It might make the metal cheaper, but then it'll be used in everything and you're 2024 Toyota Corolla will be a pile of rust by 2030. Virgin steel doesn't have oxides trapped in the structure so it rusts way slower. I usually don't bother with steel scrap, aluminum and copper is the good stuff.

You could have easily gotten triple that if you took the copper aluminum radiators out from that HVAC equipment
If you don’t have an HVAC license they won’t take it like that in some places.

If 4000lb = 1800kg, then according to my calculation, in India I would have got around $600 - $700 for metal scrap.
