It is well documented that although she did have drinks, she rarely finished them. What you are seeing is the affect the years of taking highly addictive medication, first given to her in her teens by the studios and then on and off with "doctors" swirling all around her. She's as much a victim as she is accountable.
This is conflating multiple issues, the medications she was giving by the studios were not the cause of her behavior in this interview but her use of barbiturates which began at a later date. Now I guess to a certain extent it's not a stretch to assume that one beget the other but that's not a certainty, there's no doubt what the studios did was harmful but it's just impossible to say for certain that it's also to blame for her barbiturate addiction and ultimate demise.
Not the studio, it was her mother that started her on those, the epitome of a pushy brutal stage mother. I read somewhere that she was first given them when she was doing the gumm sisters acts with her sisters around the age of 8 or 9.

I am glad this is back on youtube! Thanks for posting it! Judy has been through a lot by the time she did this show but she still made us smile and laugh.. She was and still is a legend and a classy woman! God love ya Judy!
*She was on Prescription Medications* but had a publicly-known past Drinking & Drug problem. She was hooked on Prescriptions _(Barbituates)_ which eventually caused her death. I'm glad the audience & interviewer Jack Paar saw past her vulnerability & weakness at that time and were supportive, respectful―also full of love for the Legendary Icon Judy Garland.
Unfortunately, the truth is more awful than that. They didn't see past her vulnerability - the industry was doing it to her, they were feeding her with drugs just to make her entertain the audience. Both sides couldn't care less about her well-being.
DON'T FORGET PEOPLE HER LEGACY WAS THAT SHE WAS A TRULY AN AMAZING SINGER AND ACTRESS. Addiction is A Horrible Thing!!! I'm sure we all know somebody that has died from an Overdose either from pills or alcohol!! CAN WE JUST SHOW SOME RESPECTAND REMEMBER THE GOOD THINGS ABOUT THEM INSTEAD OF TEARING THEM DOWN TO THE GROUND❤️❤️
Thank you for posting this incredible piece of history. Today I visited the Judy Garland Museum and her home until the age of three - it left me missing Judy's performances and engaging personality. She truly was a star and a tragic story as well.
Go watch some older interviews with judy & jack. Theres one from about 7 years (maybe) before this that is HILARIOUS!!! Her hair is A bit longer & shes in a black dress. Robert goulet is also on the episode. SOOOOOOÒ FUNNY!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What people forget or don't know is that one year later, in Spring-Summer 1968, Judy checked herself into a 3-week outpatient drug treatment program at Brigham Hospital in Boston for addiction to morphine & one other drug. That's all there was at the time. She also worked with a NY doctor to get herself down to 2 sleeping pills per night. Remember Judy's children, Lorna & Joe, left Judy to live with Dad because they couldn't cope with her. Sadly, she still drank & she overdosed.
Judy Garland wasn't the first Hollywood star to die of drug and alcohol abuse. She was, however, the first star to literally have her tragic deterioration captured on videotape and film. Her triumphs and tragedies were recorded on film. Judy died in front of our eyes. To her credit, so many people were touched by her passing. Many people felt for her and wished they could have helped her. Judy's body of work was and remains incredible..that is what is important. Her gifts are still treasured and bring pleasure to many.
It seems like her mouth won't move as fast as her brain is moving - haven't we all been there? Through the fog she's as sharp and funny as ever. I love the tag line to the Munchkins story - "Poor things...but I expect they get residuals". She was so funny.
Jack was always a good friend to Judy, and would often say how much he loved having her on the Tonight Show as a guest. After this introduction he quickly sums up Judy’s demeanour as she staggered onto the stage, and held her arm until she was firmly seated.
I did not know this--thanks for sharing. It appears Judy had nobody to turn to in her addictions. Amazing she lasted to her age afterall. Very brave person and entertainer.
She was my grandfather and fathers favorite, they absolutely loved her ... what amazed me about her besides her incredible singing and acting was that she had a fabulous comedic talent and that she survived all that life dished up ..... Liza who was also fabulous had to sit through Ellen sending her up which I thought was unkind ... these two woman had more talent in their little fingers !
Just a couple of months earlier (from this interview) Judy had been fired from the "Valley of the Dolls" film. And just two months after this visit, with the great Jack Parr, Judy made a triumphant return to an historic concert run at the Palace in New York City. Such was her roller-coaster life in her last years. The famous Bette Davis quote from "What About Eve" fits so perfectly here - "fasten your seat-belts, it's going to be a bumpy night!" Cheers to the kindly and bright Mr. Parr and, of course, the grand Judy Garland.
I remember listening to Judy singing the lyric "youth is so terribly fleeting" on the way to work at McDonalds when I was 16. I saw her death at 47 as being years away, and incredibly old. Now I'm 44, and the her death seems so incredibly young. It's amazing how relative "youth" is. Thanks for posting this nice clip. It makes me very reflective.
Compare how she is here with how she is on the 1962 interview with Paar. She seems to be falling apart here, yet within a few months, she'd be wowing audiences again with her performances. Amazing woman.
@@a.d.7922 The month is right, but the year was 1969. A month after this, she would begin a tour in New Jersey and New York, at the end of which she would be playing the Palace Theater in New York to sold-out performances. Talk about a Phoenix.
I know I've read 2 biographies and sat through countless TV documentaries about her. In one of the biographies it recounts a Las Vegas performance where she was too drunk to perform & the angry 1950's Vegas crowd simply would not have it; Judy walked off stage and grabbed 11 year old Liza to perform the rest of her set. It is recalled that Liza was a repeat success of her mother's nearly prodigious childhood achievements that night, wowing/fascinating the evening's crowd to a standing ovation!
Judy had a sh*t childhood and died so early because of it. Poor, sweet girl. I'm not famous, but I do know how hard it is to spend your life chasing acceptance. It's how I live every day. And it completely sucks! RIP Judy....
I heard, I dont know if it's true, that the studio could of actually got her hooked on drugs .She was given pills to sleep, wake up and for weight loss, like I said I'm not sure if its true.Sad, if it is..
@@debraevans3398 I read that too. Her mom wasn't any better she had her hooked on diet pills at an early age because she thought "Judy was fat". It's also true about the studios and the drugs. They had her working on movies constantly because she signed contracts and was the main bread winner for the family.
Years of uppers unwittingly given to her and others by studio docs got her hooked. The booze was to take off the nervous edge that increases over the years. You do this, you end up: Making wrong decisions An Addict Sick A wreck in the late 50s she got off the drugs. Her weight ballooned. No one in show business wanted her. She ended up getting back on to lose weight and have that powerful energy. Sad. Dear Judy was a VICTIM! A VICTIM! Not a selfish celeb, like they are today. And she had more talent that ANY SINGER OUT THERE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She walked on stage and TOOK OVER THAT ROOM. 5'4" tall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's talent. That's stage presence. Today you have auto tune and pitch correction, compression, delay, etc. Judy had her voice. I know. I saw her sing live.
Yes and they got her smoking, I believe, a few packs of cigarettes a day, as a teenager, to control her appetite. So she got hooked on them too. I wonder if she had not died from an overdose, would she have died of cancer eventually
@Ed Miller Ed Ed Ed. There you go. Spreading false, incorrect information like it was gospel truth. The truth is, yes she was addicted to pills, drugs, but was not an alcoholic. The coroner released a statement saying she died from an accidental overdose, and he said the rumor of alcoholism is not true. Her liver was normal, with no signs of cirrhosis, or any other alcoholic disease. Yet here you are saying she had cirrhosis. I was alive when she died. I watched the news about her death. But I guess you know more than the coroner who performed her autopsy.
It is incredible that after all the decades past I still want to go back in time and help her.. That was part of her gift I suppose the ability to move anyone in her presence that way. I am guessing she could not be saved.. I was fortunate enough to meet Liza a few years ago 2010. After staring into the most beautiful brown eyes I gave her an enormous hug. I could feel the energy bouncing off her. In that moment I understood the energy her Mother must of had. 1967 was to be yet another comeback year for Judy .. "Valley of the Dolls" from which she was fired A string of successful concerts including yet another stay at the New York Palace theater.. ABC records recorded it.. but it was not to be.. We can debate each other forever.. The real truth is she was a talent a treasure a superstar ....
Only Judy's fragile body (after decades of drugs, overwork under studio overcriticism, and stress, e.g., money and show cancels) "burned out." Her talents and creativity were so huge, her genius and humor so capacious, she could have lived many more full life lengths. Happily Judy recorded will go on forever.
I've never seen a male host so physically affectionate to a female guest. And, these were "old fashioned" people. They must have been very close. Terrific dynamic.
On a cool misty night in NYC, I stood on line outside Campbell's Funeral Home for the viewing of the great Judy Garland. She looked lovely & she wore the famous red shoes. I will never forget that evening. I loved all her movies & the emotion in her singing. Molly Torres Kafes Born in Manhattan in 1938.
@@ritagallagher8695 *She was on Prescription Medications,* but had a publicly-known past Drinking & Drug problem. Probably why she didn't like drinking. She was hooked on highly-addictive Prescriptions _(Barbituates)_ which eventually caused her death.
Deanna McDaniel Yes possibly, but I think at this point in her life/career, she had some neurological as well as emotional damage from years of drinking and hooked on pills, starting on the set of The Wizard Of Oz to keep weight off and keeping her awake to do 16 hrs. a day on set. I don’t think, in my own personal opinion she was drunk in this interview, just nervous energy from years of ingesting these concoctions.
Green gene Flowers - That could be the case. She seemed to be able to hold her own in conversations, but she seemed to have a hard time walking and acted like she wasn’t sure where she was supposed to go. She was still taking the pills. She tried to stop more than once, but wasn’t able to stop on her own and there weren’t rehab programs back then. So the world lost her to an accidental drug overdose at the young age of 47.
She’s wonderful but I’d be shocked if anyone doesn’t realize she’s absolutely wasted here. She could barely walk out on stage, notice that Parr had to go back and steady her. Plus he controlled nearly all of the conversation and she said actually very little. My heart breaks for her.
Dennis Loniak some of it was Adrenal Fatigue from so many pills...it’s amazing if you can even get out of bed to go anywhere! Considering her mother had been drugging her since the age of 9, it’s amazing she lasted as long as she did!
Corinne Hernandez it was probably a very bad case of Adrenal Fatigue from the pills...since being drugged from the age of nine! Only functional & Integrative medical practitioners or naturopaths will do testing for it today! It makes it difficult to even get out of bed...so this makes perfect sense why she couldn’t get to places on time! Unless you’ve been through it...you wouldn’t know how bad it is or recognize it! I’m guessing she had it for years & no one knew...if they had let her eat like a normal person, she might have recovered.
I always feel sad for judy Garland her life was sad she was treated terribly throughout her life and she seemed like a lovely lady God rest her beautiful soul🙏❤
i didnt understand everything bc I'm still learning English and it's hard bc of the quality but I think I liked the interviewer. it seemed like he'd care about her. I also liked that he talked about himself, I felt like he just wanted to make it as comfortable as possible for judy. when she walked in and then out he hold her so she wouldn't fall and he didn't ask any dumb questions. the way he talks to her just seems very caring and nice. it's just my own opinion
Drunk or no drunk, high or nay ... she could walk in a pair of heals like nobody including her curtsy AND her talent wit charm and timing are innate clear and evident! Amazing woman!!!
Eridu Sirius "Appears" is the key word, you are so right. However, years of taking prescribed medication (to sleep and then uppers in order to perform) took their toll. She was also, by this phase in her short life, just plain old tired. She was essentially a workhorse who had t work work work in order to financially to stay afloat. Even then she was f*cked because of unscrupulous managers and accountants who squirrelled away her hard won earnings and never able to enjoy any kind of luxury she so deserved.
She had a very privileged life, but such a very very sad life R.I.P. Hope you are happy. Born too soon you would have got some help if you had been here today.❤
If I could be as charming, articulate and funny _sober_ Od be thrilled. Who are you people, the new Prohibitionists? She self-medicated, she was anxious, flawed, human yet not: “not a natural but a supernatural being” to quote Delmore Schwartz more or less.
Ugh, error. Dictating due to a paralyzed hand, but not drunk. Lest you vilify me as well! What I had meant to say was “I would be”/“I’d be” not OD which looks like an ominous Freudian paraprax.
mstalcup I don’t know if this show was live or recorded, but I noticed @4.10 Mr Paar glanced nervously offstage (presumably to the director), seemingly worried that Miss Garland might say something outrageous that might get them taken off the air. In 1967 of course, censorship was still pretty strict about what was allowed on TV.
Frank Albert ......I’m with you, get over yourselves. How does it help you, or her legacy, to judge her so harshly, and point out her state of mind as being altered? We’re looking at an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation. Who also happened to be blessed (or cursed) with a gift to communicate through her voice that makes her one the most important, and talented singers of the 20th century. Her gift, combined with her life story is compelling on several levels, and to marginalize her as just drunk, reflects much more poorly on you than her.
Wow, just watched a show from1962. Now 5 years later in 67 she's aged 20 years. What a difference. She's loaded here you can tell. Watch the show from 62... She was a fantastic entertainer though.... God Bless her..

I was about to say the same Lorna said she never finished drinks that’s a part of the myth it is years of prescription drugs she’s still beautiful

I'm guessing amphetamines mixed with barbiturates have made her brain go like this, really sad to see, hopefully she was happy here at least.

I Love this Legend who flew away too soon! Judy Garland FOREVER!
I saw this show when it was "live" in '67 ... I'll never forget the "broom" thing she did walking on and walking off.
She truly was a star and a tragic story as well.
i never realized how funny and quick she was,,
I agree. I've never seen an interview with her before.
Floater IT SEEMS YOU DIDN'T KNOW HER FOR REAL .she was a comedian everybody knows
T. J but judy was recognize has a funny person
Go watch some older interviews with judy & jack. Theres one from about 7 years (maybe) before this that is HILARIOUS!!! Her hair is A bit longer & shes in a black dress. Robert goulet is also on the episode. SOOOOOOÒ FUNNY!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
She's a Gemini!
I will all ways love love love this beautiful women !!
Jack: The Moonchkins
Judy: The what?!
I have always felt a lot of compassion for Judy Garland. She was a giant talent, but her mother and the Hollywood system really did a number on her.
Judy was an awesome person with so much talent humor too as well too !
Arguably One Of The Greatest Talents Of The 20th century. Can't Believe it's Over 50 years Since She Died in London at just 47.
Judy's still on the ball and hilarious even when stoned--god love her---
I remember listening to Judy singing the lyric "youth is so terribly fleeting" on the way to work at McDonalds when I was 16. I saw her death at 47 as being years away, and incredibly old. Now I'm 44, and the her death seems so incredibly young. It's amazing how relative "youth" is. Thanks for posting this nice clip. It makes me very reflective.
She was very young
Compare how she is here with how she is on the 1962 interview with Paar. She seems to be falling apart here, yet within a few months, she'd be wowing audiences again with her performances. Amazing woman.
she died about 1 month later (june 1967)
@@a.d.7922 The month is right, but the year was 1969. A month after this, she would begin a tour in New Jersey and New York, at the end of which she would be playing the Palace Theater in New York to sold-out performances. Talk about a Phoenix.
Beluckyinlove net she died TWO years later.. 1969
@@a.d.7922 No, she didn't. I met her in person the next month in Westbury, New York. She was wonderful to me.
I know
I've read 2 biographies and sat through countless TV documentaries about her.
I disagree she's to addicted to drugs it's a freight train waiting to happen overdose
Same. X
She’s hilariously funny, even when she buzzed!
kay sav Boozed!🤣
Why do you say she’s buzzed that’s very disrespectful I do agree she’s funny but that’s because of her personality
a j l She was an alcoholic
David L , thanks for the video can still see these classics from past times , someday this will be seen as centuries old.
She said at the end "I'll go home and you stay here" I think because he would barely let her get a word in.
v I know, he cut her off a few times when I really wanted to hear what she was going to say... then he told his story 🙄
She was I intoxicated. He helped her through this interview.
Theresa Cole think that's exactly what was going on.
she really was a one and only. to bad she never had a happy life to young to die America always loved her we still miss her
Years of uppers unwittingly given to her and others by studio docs got her hooked. The booze was to take off the nervous edge that increases over the years. You do this, you end up:
Making wrong decisions
An Addict
Sick
A wreck
in the late 50s she got off the drugs.
She was actually 4'11"
4'11.
Yes and they got her smoking, I believe, a few packs of cigarettes a day, as a teenager, to control her appetite. So she got hooked on them too. I wonder if she had not died from an overdose, would she have died of cancer eventually
The weight problem was from Hepatitis
@Ed Miller Ed Ed Ed. There you go. Spreading false, incorrect information like it was gospel truth. The truth is, yes she was addicted to pills, drugs, but was not an alcoholic. The coroner released a statement saying she died from an accidental overdose, and he said the rumor of alcoholism is not true. Her liver was normal, with no signs of cirrhosis, or any other alcoholic disease. Yet here you are saying she had cirrhosis. I was alive when she died. I watched the news about her death. But I guess you know more than the coroner who performed her autopsy.
She could act, sing, & was hilariously funny!! What a talented queen she was!!
She was funny. You can totally see her in Liza. I find her endearing in a sad sort of way
It is incredible that after all the decades past I still want to go back in time and help her..
How nice, and refreshing, to read a sensible, insightful comment on this video. Thank you!
I don't understand how she never lost her voice or her composure under the influence.
I've never seen a male host so physically affectionate to a female guest. And, these were "old fashioned" people. They must have been very close. Terrific dynamic.
I'm 12 and Judy Garland is my idol. (That doesnt mean Im gonna go smoke, I just love her)
Jesus, our Saviour God, loves you, sweet friend. Let Him be your idol. Judy can be a role model. God bless you love.

Love anything Judy
Paar was a far better interviewer than Carson--he was truly witty (a quality no longer found on television). I agree with everything you say.
I was just thinking the same thing....Jack was really gifted....so clever and so mischievous....had a great deal of fun doing what he did....
it's amazing to see how much Liza is like her mom .. her tone and mannerism ...
"Let's hope it's Nibbles" LOL I love Judy's face during that bit 'cause obviously it sounds like something else haha
She said Nipples
Judy's honest rawness is refreshing! Sadly she'd probably be canceled today.
Thank you for uploading this.
LOVE her haircut here! Looks like a prettier version of daughter, Liza!!

"They where drunks"

Love you Judy
They said in a bio of her that she never liked to drink it was the drugs
And, in addition, she had bulimia thanks to Louis B. Mayer. But she was FABULOUS!
She was on Prescription Medicatio
She was on Prescription Medications.
@@ritagallagher8695 *She was on Prescription Medications,* but had a publicly-known past Drinking & Drug problem. Probably why she didn't like drinking. She was hooked on highly-addictive Prescriptions _(Barbituates)_ which eventually caused her death.
Thanks for uploading this David Layton. First time seeing this. Love Judy.
Judy Garland is hilarious. I had no idea she had such a great sense of humour.
Sadly she needed massive amounts of drugs to be cognizant, the studio(Louis B Mayer) was an absolute monster
Don't you love the way Parr made her feel so welcome and comfortable that she didn't want to leave? He seemed like a really nice guy to me.
She is high as hell in this interview..
Deanna McDaniel - She’s high in every interview I’ve seen.
Deanna McDaniel
Yes possibly, but I think at this point in her life/career, she had some neurological as well as emotional damage from years of drinking and hooked on pills, starting on the set of The Wizard Of Oz to keep weight off and keeping her awake to do 16 hrs. a day on set. I don’t think, in my own personal opinion she was drunk in this interview, just nervous energy from years of ingesting these concoctions.
cmmahoney21 please read my reply to Deanna McDonald. Thanks.
Such a sweet & humble person 💞she even picked up the broom off the floor😌💗
She’s wonderful but I’d be shocked if anyone doesn’t realize she’s absolutely wasted here. She could barely walk out on stage, notice that Parr had to go back and steady her. Plus he controlled nearly all of the conversation and she said actually very little. My heart breaks for her.
@@unconditionalfreedom She's even worse with Dick Cavett a year later - that's also on TH-cam.
I agree she is obviously high .... very sad
I'd stay wasted too if every screw that came along stoled everything from me while I worked myself to death. Demonic men.
He did have a deep fondness for Judy. You can see the same behavior in previous interviews he did with her.
your a twat/// study that in english... Paar was a cunxt in this...... learn english before you comment on a great star darling

O
I agree totally--she's a bright shining fragile star--more help should have been available to her back then. Then she might still be with us.
she had guts that Judy.
Drunk or no drunk, high or nay ... she could walk in a pair of heals like nobody including her curtsy AND her talent wit charm and timing are innate clear and evident! Amazing woman!!!
Wow. I've never seen this footage!!! She really does appear heavily under the influence of booze & narcotics.
Clearly
You Think!!!!!
So sad for you Judy. Rest In Peace, my dear. You’re safe now.
She was too intoxicated to do this and Paar knew it. He had to fill almost all the interview time with his own voice.
Yes, She's Drunk!!!!
