      ha ha.... when I left the beach, I told the parking lady that there were an unusual number of sharks inside the breaking waves, just so she could give people a heads up....
      She replied "My surfers all left and told me about them, so I put out the Purple flag" 🙂

      They are actually quite interesting to observe. I don't feel uncomfortable with them, until there are a bunch in the whitewater.
      Then they could mistake a leg for a fish.... so I left when there were a lot in the shallow.

      Hi Insight, thanks for the comment!\
      Actually, I SUP surf a lot of challenging conditions, from really choppy to big windy breaks with lots of rebound.
      I just chose a board that best suits the conditions.
      Some boards are super stable and tame wooly conditions pretty well.
      Where I live in the Summer, has offshore winds and clean conditions a lot, so I am glad about that!

      Thanks David!
      I live on Cape Cod... about 10 years ago, we started getting Great Whites showing up to hunt the exploding seal population.
      Non of us had ever seen a shark of any kind on Cape Cod.
      Soon, our surf zone became the highest concentration of Great Whites in the world.
      Literally 20 feet from the beach. Google Cape Cod Great Whites.... then, check the images.... it's basically insane how many are there.
      So... when I come to Florida and can easily see many smaller sharks and study their behavior, I found out that they really don't care about humans at all.
      They don't even seem to notice us. So, as long as I stay out of the white water (when sharks are in close hunting fish) then I know they have no intention to bite me.
      They are there and I'm not going to stop surfing, so I have actually grown to appreciate empty dawn patrol session on the Cape, since most surfers won't go out until after 8 am.😊

    Lotsa adolescent Great Whites spotted along North San Diego County last summer. Pretty much every time we would go out. They tend to keep their distance (we hope!).

    • @rickweeks
      @rickweeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe, I have been following how the numbers are on the increase out there.
      The little GW's and the big ones don't freak me out too much.... but the adolescents are a bit more careless in what they will go after. Stay safe!

    • @joeblow1942
      @joeblow1942 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rickweeks I’m not sure if the Great Whites are on the increase or we are seeing them now because of drones. Actually, scratch that cuz In my 60 years of playing in the ocean and living and surfing in Santa Cruz, Kauai, Maui and San Diego, I and others NEVER saw Great Whites full on breaching like we’ve been seeing for the last two years.

    • @rickweeks
      @rickweeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joeblow1942 I hear that!
      We never had any kind of sharks on Cape Cod till the seal population recovered in the early 2000's
      Now there are hundreds of GW's... It's not unusual for 6 or 7 beaches (in 30 miles of coastline) to be closed on the same day by different GW's.
      Kinda freaky, but I am adjusting to their existence.... and they keep the crowds down! 🙂

    You're lucky they weren't interested in you, mate. When they're in their numbers in the shallows like that, they're usually feeding. When the odd one or so "circled" you (quoting because I didn't see it but you said one did just that), it's because you were pissing them off. It was a warning.
    Beautiful to see so many congregated. It's always awesome to see.
