I played this song on rum point at grand cayman Island In July of 2000 after I buried a diamond ring in the sand at the waters edge and asked my beautiful lady to dig for burried treasure, then asked her to marry me. 1 year later I played it in key largo FL on the dive boat. Before we jumped off into the water be married at the christ of the abyss statue in John pencamp st Park. Lost her 10yrs ago to a massive stroke on Christmas eve 16 years to the day we met. Still listening to this beautiful music in 2024. Every time this song plays with a smile on my face and a tear in my eyes. Will always love you beautiful lady. Ironically Def Leppard was the 1st concert I saw at 16yrs old. Incredible music, incredible memories.... Thank you.❤.
I lost my wife in Sept 2014.God loves you guy. Both of our wives are waiting for us both in Gods kingdom. I bet there safe and well. I remember on wedding day we were on the sandy beach having fun. I lost my wedding ring in the water. Then it rained. But a fun day. Happy days playing in the park my doggies jumping my wife laughing. Miss her every day. But with me always in Promise to remember till my death! Take care and be well guy! Love this nice SONG!
In the summer of 99 it was so flashy and crisp sounding. I played the hell out of it. It was a great summer song. It's hard to explain. It Rocked!! Take care!!
@@MrClassicRock2011 That's EXACTLY WHY, 💯, I sing along with this song 🎵 and MANY OTHER DefLeppard Songs, I also play along with their Songs with my 1962 Fender Stratocaster Guitar 🎸, smile 😃, since 1978.
I can't believe I missed this banger as I transitioned from high school to college. The backing vocals are just what I would expect from many Def Leppard songs.
I'm so in love with this group ever since they put there music on the shells alone of memory's alone of women cars and should have stayed with that girl I would have been happier music is cool
This song started off with a lot of promise, but once that generic Def Leppard chorus kicked in around 0:48 I immediately rolled my eyes. They should remake this song without that generic chorus they've abused for years.
I missed some of Def Leppard's music in the 90's. Life happened. Married, children, family. I've been listening to some of their album's and I found a bunch of their music from that decade that I really relate to. Also, over the past few years I'm listening to them more and more. I'm 53 and this is my top favorite band forever. Keep Rockin' !!!❤️😘
Just an old man here. Hard to believe this is the band that opened up for AC/DC when I was young...lol. Man, that band was hungry and had an attitude of taking on the world! Didn't we all back then? lol Oh well. Def Lep went from rock to pop long before this and the death of Steve Clark ended any thought of looking back. That being said, this is a good Def Lep song in the pop tradition. Excellent guitar work, solid drumming, good vocals (joe Elliot was losing his higher range by then just a bit) and a great bass line. Elliot was also Blessed to have RICK Savage singing background melodies throughout their career and Sav has always been able to help when those higher register notes were needed for short periods. They are a legendary band that stayed together through so much and whether they went from rock or pop or not, they deserve their place in the RRHOF! They have stayed together through alcohol, drugs, accidents and death and just keep on playin' and say what you want, but that's guts and that's rock & roll.
+Michelle Morgan I appreciate you correcting me. It was just a typo. I'm old. You'll get there someday. Thank you...And just for the record, I noticed I didn't put a capitol letter on the "J" in Joe Elliott's name and spelled his name wrong too. Feel free to point out any other errors you notice. Never too old to learn. Thank you again.
+jimmy shine Hey Jimmy, thanks for the reply. Ya, music was great back then. But just for the record, Michelle was right. I just made a typo and corrected it after she pointed out my error. It is Rick Savage. I was only trying to point out back then that the Def Lep I first heard back in the early days, circa "On Through The Night", "High & Dry" and even "Pyromania" sounds nothing like the band that does "Adrenalize" or "Euphoria". Take care.
I grew up with Def Leppard in what is probably the greatest era since the Victorian age: The 80's I've been a fan since their very first album, which I have somewhere in storage, yes the actual LP, it's an 80's thing, yall wouldn't understand. Def Leppard is by far the greatest rock-n-roll band to have ever taken the stage in arenas world wide. I've seen them 11 times in concert, and damn do they put on a show. Hysteria tour was unreal, Legend Valley. Sex, Drugs, Rock-n-Roll, greatest time in the world.
The year was 1999. I was driving on I-355, crossing over I-90 on my way to Arlington Heights, IL and falling asleep behind the wheel to visit my girlfriend at the time. This song came on "97.9 FM - The Loop" and, while I had heard it before a few times (and loved every minute of it), it immediately took me from 0 to 10 in seconds. The fact that a 1980's band actually succeeded in creating power pop perfection using their awesome, iconic sound in 1998 is quite the feat. Well, I didn't crash my car and all was still good in the world. Thank you, Def Leppard, for playing a part of one of the best years of my life. 😎🙏✌❤
Here's the last real classic song that Def Lep ever did. I almost like it even better than their vintage 80s and early 90s music. It has just a little of that 1999 pop feeling, but didn't abandon their hard rock/pop metal roots either.
The entire Euphoria album had that feeling, Adrenalize felt lackluster like they were worn out, Slang was just weird imo and not catchy at all. But I love Euphoria for these beginning riffs they're just great. After that Def Leppard went TOO pop, Yeah was great tho
Cody Orvik I agree. About half of Adrenalize was great but alot felt like Hysteria leftovers. Would be awesome if they did another CD in this style someday.
JPMcFly1985Two #FeelTheBern I think their newest album got the closest to this style, it wasn't great but it gave me hope they still have it in them. I also love It's all about believin', one of the singles they released on Mirror Ball.
I think maybe the radio doesn't deserve these guys. They're of their own element and the radio stations of today play complete crap!! Idk. True Lep fans know what they're creating and we make them our own. Love Def Leppard forever!!!
I loved Steve Clark and always will but Vivian Campbell has been an amazing soldier in the Def Leppard Army. I tip my cap to him stepping in to some major shoes to fill.

Two and a half days of good friends, good music, and a whole lot of rock N roll hell raising! Thank You to Def Leppard, and my crew for helping me through that hard time, I'll always remember!

Last summer, radio station WPNC in the North Carolina Outer Banks dedicated the entire week of Independence Day to the 50th anniversary of American Top 40 with Casey Kasem. Throughout the week, they played several remastered American Top 40 countdowns from the original Casey Kasem era (1970-1988), and a handful of special shows as well, but they also played some countdowns from the second Casey Kasem era (1998-2004). One of the second-era shows they played was from the summer of 1999 (July 17, 1999?), and "Promises" was featured on the countdown that week! It fell to #37 that week, but it still sounded great! It was the first time I'd heard the song on the radio since it was a hit on the radio, and I fell in love with it all over again! "Promises" sounds like vintage Def Leppard from the 1980s, but interestingly, it still fit in with all the rest of the music on the countdown from that period of time. I love the full sound of the song from beginning to end, and the layered harmonies in the pre-chorus and chorus, both of which are staples of Mutt Lange productions. Hearing this song all over again on an American Top 40 countdown reminded me of exactly why I enjoy listening to old American Top 40 shows so much. Not only do you get to hear Casey Kasem and his friendly voice, but you also get to hear several underrated hits that would otherwise be forgotten if not for the shows being rebroadcasted. I hope WPNC does another week of American Top 40 shows this Independence Day. That'd be awesome.
Me and my brother entered my school talent show with this, me singing and my brother on guitar. We won, and everyone was surprised when they found out how old this song is. One of their bast.
I kinda got a way from them and then my 46 year old brother posted this on his FB page and it was love all over again. This is an excellent song at 49 with Def Leppard as Photograph and Rock of Ages was when I was 15. Musically they haven't changed that much. Just get better with age like fine wine.
Melodic hard rock was always Def Leppard's forté, and this song is no exception! It's tonality is in a major key, like "Photograph," and the lyrics are positive, all with Phil Collen's and Vivian Campbell's driving guitars behind them. Paired with the legendary DL rhythm section, this song rocks, and this band STILL kicks my ass! Long live Def Leppard!
It actually came out in 1999. No one would play it. I remember the song was number one on rock radio and MTV would only play it at 3 am. The song made it to 102 on the "Hot 100."
My favorite Def Leppard song, love the message. Got to see them live in 2009, have tickets to see them again in the Stadium Tour w/Motley Crue next year.
it doesn't matter what anyone of the band loks like.. The song is finally a great song again. Hope they finally hit the road again and come over to Germany..
I was lucky enough to see Def Leppard live at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1987 I think it was , part of the Animal tour, oh man, will never forget that concert, they were awesome !
"Last night I was blown away I said a million things I'd never say I was knocked right down, it got to me Gonna get me some of your chemistry You want me to promise you That everything is true I won't make promises that I can't keep I won't make promises that I don't mean I'll even mean the things I tell you in my sleep, yeah I won't make promises babe, that I can't keep Oh my my, I lost control I told you everything, I said it all You came right out and said to me "Gonna get me some of your honesty" You want me to promise you That everything is true I won't make promises that I can't keep I won't make promises that I don't mean I'll even mean the things I tell you in my sleep, yeah I won't make promises babe, that I can't keep You want me to promise you That everything is true I won't make promises that I can't keep I won't make promises that I don't mean I'll even mean the things I whisper in my sleep Oh, let me tell you I won't say a single thing darling, that you can't believe You gotta believe me I won't make promises that I can't keep Oh baby believe me now I won't make promises that I don't mean Oh why won't you believe me now I'll even mean the things I whisper in my sleep, yeah I won't make promises that I can't keep Baby, you gotta believe me" ;-jx
This fuckin' has the "level" to be a fuckin classic like the Pyromania and Hysteria songs!!! Who should believe that the "Leppards" will be able to do a song like this one in 1999??? A MASTERPIECE!!!!!
My favourite song from "Euphoria". Def Leppard is trully one of the greatest bands of all time. Saw them life in 2015 - simply the best show I ever went to. I'm probably gonna face lots of criticism, but I'll choose Def Lep over Led Zeppelin, The Who and The Rolling Stones anyday.
I whole-heartedly agree! Def Leppard is easily the greatest band of all time. They have rock, metal, glam rock, pop, grunge, and a few other styles of music, and they nail every single genre they attempt to record in. The diversity and change in Def Leppard's music catalog is just amazing, and I really appreciate it. DEF LEPPARD FOREVER!!!
I think they are an underrated band because they had their own kind of style. They were certainly not an heavy metal band and they were not soft rock either. They were good looking and made great songs. What possibly held them back was their live vocals. Their studio albums are slick and well polished but Joes voice in the live concerts often sounds as rough as sandpaper...
Exactly. Listening to this I was like...”Are you sure that was a new song then and not some previously recorded unreleased song that was rejected from that album? That’s odd...” Because obviously, most of the music of 1999 was VERY different compared to 1987 honestly...and I was born in 1999, but many of the songs from that year continued to play on the radio well during my childhood.
Def Leppard should’ve maintained there sound in the mid 90s and made songs like this along with shifting their image to fit what was going on throughout that time. Just opinion.
Bought the CD when it came out;-) Became a fan waay too late during the Vault years (too broke to buy their albums back then). Stood out and sang along in the parking lot of the Iowa State fair when Leppard came to Iowa🤟
Thank you def.leppard....it.was the 4th ..Time i saw leppard. 1993 1997 2016 and 2023. A week ago.. with motley crue. A great.great concert. At México city. Foro sol. ..thanks .you aré an.awesome.band.. I love leppard since ,1982. I.have cds lps cassettes..vhs dvd ..salute from México!!!!

Lucky you! They're coming to my city this month, but I won't be able to go. Saw them a few years ago during a Las Vegas residency. They were amazing! A couple of them were very nice, too.
I never left Def Leppard’s group. I was locked out. I think this song is such a sweet couple’s song for lover’s. It is so very very heart-felt and sweet. Joe Elliott sings beautifully and the word’s are are meaningful. Angie ❤️🎶🙏🏻🧎♀️💫🎤🎤🎤🎤🎙🎙🎙❤️❤️❤️❤️🇬🇧. ‘I Promise!’ Angela Johnson... I can’t get into Facebook at all! I miss everyone! Angie ❤️🧎♀️😢
Haha my fav band of all time right here. My dad wore out high and dry when i was a kid. I remember him telling me" son they put out another album coming" i was like whaaaattttttt! And this song was the first i heard of it
I feel like this was like one of the first examples of albums representing the third wave rock sound, (the one we’re entering now) that basically try to exist for the next 20 years and weren’t able to do a very good job until very recently.

+Jenny Gail Yeah... they seem timeless. 53 y/o here and still loving most of their stuff. Have a great day
62 here.....and they are one of my favorites. Right up there with Satriani, Collective Soul and Joe Walsh
Jenny Gail Im now 58 .And still like hearing . Def Leppard thanks
This is My favorite Def Leppard song of All Time the Year 1999
Melodic hard rock was always Def Leppard's forté, and this song is no exception!
I remember they played this song in the 3Arena in dublin in 2018 and the speakers nearly blew. Great song
Thank God For Def Leppard And Their Music. Magic, Same Thing
One of those songs that is so fun to play on guitar. Phil Collin is a monster player!!
Sometimes spirit assist yous in journey foward so no your doing fantastic with cup Java
it doesn't matter what anyone of the band loks like.. The song is finally a great song again. Hope they finally hit the road again and come over to Germany..
This track is an earcatcher. Had it in my ears while on my way to work. Another one of my many Faves from Joe Elliott & Co. 😘🤘
Still rockin 20 years later and still great to this day
Phil Collen is so awesome. My favorite guitar player.
Steve was AMAZING!!!
The last good Def Leppard song. Thanks again to producer Mutt Lange. No coincidence.
I was lucky enough to see Def Leppard live at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1987 I think it was , part of the Animal tour, oh man, will never forget that concert, they were awesome !
"Last night I was blown away
I said a million things I'd never say
I was knocked right down, it got to me
Gonna get me some of your chemistry
You want me to promise you
That everything is true
I won't make promises that I can't keep
I won't make promises that I don't mean
I'll even mean the things I tell you in my sleep, yeah
I won't make promises babe, that I can't keep
Oh my my, I lost control
I told you everything, I said it all
You came right out and said to me
"Gonna get me some of your honesty"
You want me to promise you
That everything is true
I won't make promises that I can't keep
I won't make promises that I don't mean
I'll even mean the things I tell you in my sleep, yeah
I won't make promises babe, that I can't keep
You want me to promise you
That everything is true
I won't make promises that I can't keep
I won't make promises that I don't mean
I'll even mean the things I whisper in my sleep
Oh, let me tell you
I won't say a single thing darling, that you can't believe
You gotta believe me
I won't make promises that I can't keep
Oh baby believe me now
I won't make promises that I don't mean
Oh why won't you believe me now
I'll even mean the things I whisper in my sleep, yeah
I won't make promises that I can't keep
Baby, you gotta believe me"
;-jx
The outro is so beautiful. It makes me tear up
This fuckin' has the "level" to be a fuckin classic like the Pyromania and Hysteria songs!!! Who should believe that the "Leppards" will be able to do a song like this one in 1999??? A MASTERPIECE!!!!!
When Simon Lebon briefly stepped in as lead singer of Def Leppard.
Totally my thought as well!
lololol !!!!! you are right!! lmao ..
I find this comment hilarious.
Lol so true
I KNOW STEVE WILL ALWAYS BE MISSED...DEF LEPPARD KEEPS HIS SPIRIT ALIVE......
Man I love this song! Underrated in my opinion as are many of Def Leppard's songs.
VIVA DEF LEPPARD!
I love Def Leppard but so glad Sav and Joe grew their hair back. They looked so different with short hair.
I actually think as they have grown older, and i certainly have...the shorter hair may look better on them at this age.
Same they're my favorite band
you won't get criticism from me i agree
Thank you))
Their harmony was always on top ❤️
This sounds like it could have been off Hysteria. But this was 12 years later.
No, this one has a fresh sound, definitely
thinking the same thing
I don't know why this song isnt played more
Die beste Band die es je gab! Danke für eine tolle Zeit!
By far my favorite DL song of the 90s
Well, it was released in 99 and you probably didn't get a whole lot of listening in before the turn, but it was my favorite of the 2000's!
Love this song I thought these guys were done making great stuff after the 80’s then I heard this song love the chorus so much
Ngl, music video's kinda fire 🔥
Bought the CD when it came out;-) Became a fan waay too late during the Vault years (too broke to buy their albums back then). Stood out and sang along in the parking lot of the Iowa State fair when Leppard came to Iowa🤟

This is one of the better newerr leppard tunes
You guys are like the "Keanu Reeves" of the rock world.....what you did for your drummer just blew my mind.
(aside from your music being a core part of me maturing as a man.)
I was..is and always will be a dedicated fan
listening to this after screwing up in my dating life, sometimes easy to say stuff in the moment to please others...path of least resistance people pleasing but comes back to bite you
Just saw Def Leppard in Charlotte as part of the Stadium Tour. They sounded great!
Lucky you! They're coming to my city this month, but I won't be able to go. Saw them a few years ago during a Las Vegas residency. They were amazing! A couple of them were very nice, too.
what good is a promise like this if we're x59x apart and I'm the scaredy cat... LOL 😁
what the heck.... LOL 😁
I know....only but a brief moment in time....

"Promises"= really good song 90s song...
"Paper Sun" =underated timeless masterpiece...
One of my absolute favorite songs! Joe and Sav look hot with the short hair but they are just hot anyway❤
Love this song. So glad they played it live here in Madrid last saturday. What a surprise!
