    Pure quality. Didn't take long for the quality to start going after this. The introduction of the W202 and the W210 saw things go very wrong indeed. As good as Mercedes Benz are today I don't think they have the aura they did back in the 80's. It's not the same anymore, there's too many of them and now everyone can afford a diesel AMG trim A Class. Back then you stuck your nose up to the window and dreamed.

    Back in 2013, I was handed down a '93 E320 (W124) from my grandmother who was going to a nursing home.
    The car was so nice I couldn't believe it was a 20 year old vehicle.
    Something about the ride. It rides like i'm on a cloud or something. Engine had zero vibration. It was really quiet and comfortable. Even the power locks were operated by a vacuum pump, and it had such a nice sound and feel to it.
    W124 was introduced in 1985... to compete with Cadillac and Lincoln, BMW and Jaguar models of that era. No comparison.

      The enlarged version of the OM603 I-6 turbo diesel engine (larger bore and longer stroke) that was out the year this tape was issued had brought Mercedes down to its knees. Compared to the original 3.0L version sold in 1986-87, this engine had a bad reputation and came to be known as the "Rod Bender."

      I was born and live today in Stuttgart. The man of evil was Jürgen Schrempp ... he was terrible, cutting cost everywhere leading to the rust and other quality issues on the W210, under his management the Mercedes A-Class tipped over in the Elch test which created a huge market backlash and lastly, he did the merger with Chrysler. And then he laid off a lot of skilled people.
      Took Mercedes two decades to return to former standard, but by then, many others had caught up.

      Back in the day a knowledge was a must! Therefore once you got a job (and it wasn't easy) a proper training and exams were provided at least twice a year, quite often organized by a factory itself. Today no one cares. Everyone can do the job. One rule - the cheaper, the better. And that's where the lack of knowledge and competence is coming from. 20 yrs in business and already tired of all this.

    I’ve seen other videos about old Mercedes versus today’s and the comment that sticks out is, “Mercedes of this era are when engineers had say in the build of the vehicle, today the accounting department is in charge of the final product“

    Since i read a lot about the narrators here and there are multiple - I think the main guy (first and last appearance in the video) is Paul Maxwell.
    Look up „Aliens Debriefing (1986) Edited“ on TH-cam and tell me that‘s not him by the voice & looks.

    They built solid cars for bank managers and doctors. Even their supercars were distinguished only by the boot badge. BMW were a tad flash and bought by dodgy criminal lawyers and junk bond salesmen. Mercedes apparently decided they would compete with BMW rather than sticking to their own niche................

    The purpose of the ABS design is to generate a series of pulses of maximum friction between the surfaces of both the wheel tires and the road during the deceleration of the car to reduce the stopping distance in half as well as increase the car's ability to turn with the least possible slippage on the road.

    I'd have loved to be a salesman for those models. I'd be proud to offer customers something I am confident in. NONE of the car dealers I've tested in my area seem attached to the brand. They're just there to sell and don't care what they sell. A shame really, as you can't associate with a brand any more

    At this stage MB was the finest automobile in the world, engineering was tops, after 1995 it all went downhill.

    • @jmin8400
      @jmin8400 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, even if Lexus took over for MY 1990, they were relatively spartan at the high end. JDM got the high tech, ultimate luxury for the rear seats.
      MB included both. I'm a BMW guy, but I will forever regret not getting an W222 S65 AMG over my M760i xDrive.
      W222 came the closest to emulating that past feel and is way better than my 760 even in S560 grade. Oh well, just couldn't justify paying full price for a $200k+ AMG over a discounted 760.

    The last generation of real heavy duty Mercedes vehicles meant to schlep around everywhere from Africa to the Middle East. They were all really great vehicles that were completely over-engineered. It seems Mercedes may finally be going back to their old ways with the recent model reveals. The last part of the 90s and early 2000s were terrible for MB. Their purchase of Chrysler nearly drove them to bankruptcy and quality plummeted.

    • @jmin8400
      @jmin8400 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quality plummeted independent of Chrysler, but correct indeed.
