I was the dubbing mixer/re-recording mixer who worked on this film sequence (all the exterior/location scenes were shot on film and then played to the live audience during the studio recording of the final episode). Before starting the dub I ran thought this scene with the editor (John Dunstan) and my reaction was exactly the same as you guys. The director Ray Butt told me that all the episodes were so hard to work on as the whole crew were laughing all the time. After this session he had the programme scripts sent to me ahead of each dub.... I'd sit in bed with the wife reading through them and killing myself laughing.... brilliant. So great to see it has become a classic comedy scene.

That's great to hear. When you read a comedy script on the paper it can often seem.... well, lacking in comedy, but when you know the characters as portrayed by the actors playing them, you can visualise how it will play out when acted.

He was really good at set-ups. I was surprised to discover that 'Trigger's Broom', was actually a re-use of a joke in 'Open All Hours'. But the set-up in 'Open All Hours' was way too brief. If I remember correctly he even used the same number of heads and handles, which was I think a way of showing people that he wasn't trying to hide the fact that it was taken from 'Open All Hours'. I'm going to make an educated guess that he asked the writer of 'Open All Hours' if he could re-use it and give it the proper build-up that it deserved.

Guys...that is by far the best reaction to this I've seen so far. so much fun to see you both get side-swiped by this...and so did all us Brits at the time:). Both Nick Lyndhurst (Rodney) & David Jason (Del) were indeed threatened with being fired if they messed it up & they both had to remain in-character for an agonising 30 seconds or so after the 'drop'. You have to get into this show, it'll have you laughing your socks off. For a different kind of laugh, try any part featuring Trigger, the character is just gold. Especially fun are Triggers Broom & 'You put some music on Dave?'. And 'Dave' - Trigger constantly gets Rodney's name wrong - is probably one of the longest running gags in TV history.

I remember when 'Only Fools and Horses' was first aired about 1981. It was new, original and always funny. It was very popular and people at work used to speak of nothing must interrupt their evening while it was on. I too loved watching it but thought sometime I thought it was heavy handed. There was a time when people were copying some of their lines in normal conversation which I hated.

Like most Brits I grew up watching Only Fools and Horses among many other unforgettably comedy shows, the jokes never get old and you can't help but laugh at their reactions to the "accident" the actors are incredibly talented, absolute comedy legends in their own right, this goes for The Two Ronnies, Father Ted, Dads Army, Allo Allo, Morecambe and Wise and Benny Hill, there are so many more that the list would be far to long to write on here, anyone who doesn't understand our British humor should definitely watch more British comedy shows like these, you will soon realize that we are not opposed to laughing at ourselves or stupid situations, so don't take it personally, these shows are absolutely legendary in our culture, David Jason (Del) is 82 years old now, I wish they would do one more final episode before David Jason retires from acting altogether.
    Thanks for reacting
