Dave Allen’s show was big in the UK when I was growing up so we would always watch it as a family. He was taken far too soon. Absolutely love his humour - always done with intelligence and thought but also incredibly funny. I remember the funeral sketch well!!

Dave Allen, raised a Irish Catholic. Poked fun at every religion, however finished every show with the phrase " Goodnight and my your god go with you" A statement of religious tolerance if ever I heard of.

In later shows, he changed it to "And if you have one, may your God go with you" ❤🙏🏻 however Dave meant it, I took it as a nice sign off and a blessing from the great man of comedy - grew up with my parents watching Dave and they loved it and so do I 🍺❤️

I saw him live several times and he did swear on stage. But only when it added genuine emphasis and there was a purpose to it. I never heard him swear gratuitously just to get an effect.

An drunken Irishman who for some reason is near a small Deep South American town comes across a lake where a fire and brimstone preacher is baptizing people. As our hero approaches the preacher shouts "there's a sinner! Are you ready to find Jesus?" The Irishman replies "yes sir, I'm ready to find Jesus!" So the preacher grabs him and ducks his head in the water. Pulling the Irishman up he shouts "have you found Jesus, sinner?" The Irishman replies " no sir, I've not found him". The preacher grabs him and ducks his head in the water, this time for longer. As he pulls our coughing and spluttering hero up he shouts " now have you found Jesus?" to which the Irishman replies "no sir, I've not found him yet sir." Enraged into a frenzy the preacher grabs him a third times and shoves him in the water for even longer. As he pulls him up he bellows "now sinner, have you found Jesus?" to which the half drowned Irishman replies " no sir I haven't found Jesus yet sir, are you sure this is where he fell in?".......I'll get me coat as we say in Blighty!

Your joke reminded me of a joke that had my mum laughing for a whole week. Honestly, she’d just stop what she was doing and start laughing again. I don’t know if this says more about my mum or the joke.
Two nuns are in a Citroen 2cv. There’s the Mother Superior and a Novice. The Novice is driving very well and pulls up to a pedestrian crossing. Who should be crossing but The Devil! Ooh my! He’s jumping up and down in the road, showing his behind to those two poor nuns, basically making a right spectacle. The Mother Superior turns to the Novice and shouts “show him your cross”.
The Novice leans out of the car window and shouts “gerroff the f@@kin road ye moron”.

Dave Allen was one of first Irish comedians who made their name in UK. Allen said himself that UK was a permissive society whilst Ireland was still very Catholic in the 1970's and he'd never be allowed to mock the church there. He had actually been living in UK since he was 19..

I emeber his talking about colours, once:

In Australia back in the day, nuns wore white in Summer. I guess the rest of the seasons they were unpure 🤔
