The meaning of the lyrics?
I think it speaks about anxiety when aproaching someone who the singer views as someone beautiful and brave.
The singer feels ugly or displaced:
"Dearest, I'm broken
My body is unspoken
How could I be loved?
Wake up in the morning
Feeling uncertain
Like a burning old scar"
And misses his childhood when he was braver. Now he's hiding the colors, meaning he's scared or not happy. Meanwhile the girl that he seems to be found of is a rainbow, meaning she's showing all the colors he's hiding, being all that he longs to be. But he says that he is "a difficult man", meaning that he carries all sorts of doubts and problems.
Then the singer says:
Baby I'm choking
My rhythm is smoking
I'm floating around
Shaking and frozen
Earth that I've chosen
Surfing the clouds
Here he creates 2 different images that are opposites to one another. At the same time he's floating and surfing the clouds , he is also choking and bound to earth. This calls to me that sentiment of being mesmerized by someone (floating), but too scared to act on it (shaking and frozen), and he is too scared because, as he stated before, he feels displaced (I am a difficult man). Also we see that the singer knows he is the one holding himself back as he is the one who chose the earth and the one hinding his colors.
Meanwhile:
"She's a rainbow
And I am
A difficult man"
That's my personal take on it, however.
