This video is absolutely stellar. While I do love the modern day journey with yugi and co it's the Egyptian arc that had me enthralled. I've picked this arc apart over and over I'm so happy to see someone else views the thief king as a hero . After all history is written by the victor and in our real life history there was truly wicked pharaohs . I would love to find out just what kind of pharaoh atem was originally.

example 2: the english dubbed, the pyramid of light, and bonds beyond time, along wtih the rest of the yugioh series in the english dubbed format=2nd canon, i prefer to believe in the example 2 only as i see it as more canon than the rest unfortunately feel free to disagree but that's how i see it. now unless you tell me, why in the english dub, they are said to be in the states when in fact they are on, because of the key point 'hurricane' in the waking the dragon's arc, so i see to kinds of timelines.
1st timeline, japanese took over the entire world and make every japanese speaking.
2nd timeline the english speaking countries took over the entire world and made each country a state of the global united states. so to speak so which version is it, per japanese dub or english dub, yes i tend to look at the background history. and tried to logically decipher the creation, because duel-disks don't exist in our world, it's said the duel monsters series is based on the 1990s, and gx is based on 2010s and 5ds is based on 2030s, and yet no duel arena exists in our real world, then again perhaps it requires a damn lot of ram memory if you take into the account of Kaiba Corp satellite tracking system and whatnot.

I always felt like Bakura (and by extension Ryou)was kinda done dirty. I know good and evil isn't always black and white as most stories paint it to be. I believe Bakura did what he had to do to survive...and he did want to overthrow the corrupt kingdom..Hell, if you read the manga it tells you about what happened as well.
I can only imagine the C-PTSD that he has to live with, watching his family,.people he's probably known his whole Life, parents, friends, etc being ganked in front of him. And he also must have a lot of survivor's guilt as well. Point is, he's been through a lot. And he has a lot to work from if you wanted to write a fanfic about it which I might sometime.
I always liked Bakura, (Thief King/Yami Bakura) because he was cunning, smart, witty and he did what he had to do to survive.... Even biding his time for thousands of years to get his revenge. Yeah Zorc was probably also sealed within the Millennium Ring, but still...

Thief King Bakura is similar to Alesaa Gillispie from Silent Hill 2006 film. She was an innocent girl who was burned at the stake by a crazy cult. After that, she was visired by a dark entity which gave her supernatural and demonic powers to wxact revenge on those cultists. I think Thief King Bakura was the same.

Only Aknadin knew about that since HE WAS THE ONE WHO ORCHESTRATED IT.

Like he was only a child and a slave, but he tried to make the world into darkness by getting power by any way.
It hard to know what happen in the past but one thing is certain the cards have been played. Atem was the Pharaoh.
Hmmm, a secret project was being made being unaware, with two brothers. Later divining people into 2.
An evil force come back to finish an ancient game to determine the fate of the world.
Later people who are treated like scum… Some rebelled.
Yeah, that doesn’t happen ever again... *Laugh in yugioh 5D*
Was Bakura ancient story like Yusie or Rex Goodwin? Or Kalin.

  • @CardfighterL
    @CardfighterL 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

Basically Yugioh works around the concept of light and darkness. Atem was the one who could mantain both sides and ascend to a higher plane, and he did so because his friends were there for him, his friends (and his other self) were his light.
Thief Bakura was all alone, so he could only fall into darkness, he must have really suffered back then, several nights without sleeping, day after day having flashbacks about that incident, all that remained in Kul Elna were those lost souls, the voices yearning for revenge against the tyrant kingdom it was this grief who moved him forward, it's not about "good" or "evil" anymore, is about all that's left. All the sadness, grief, hatred, made him the perfect pawn for the devil himself. He is indeed a tragic character.
Although, fate gave him another chance, the Ryou Bakura from the modern times is just Thief Bakura without that incident, and now he has friends as well. I would really like a redemption story for Bakura to forgive his other self and they would be free from Zorc's evil forever.

Though that may have been why Atum sealed everything away.
The original timeline saw a person who seemed like a thief turn out to have actually been seeking justice only to have the ring turn him into a monster.
Yes the priests were skilled or supposed to be skilled in preventing this, but Atum say the threat and danger from one person getting their hands on one and realized how dangerous they were.
And thus as a harsh judge he judged himself and the items to be guilty and sealed himself and the items away.

    • @matthewkuscienko4616
      @matthewkuscienko4616 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

That's true -- Atem was VERY different before he met Yugi. The thing is, though, because he's portrayed as the hero of the story (alongside Yugi), and also because we never got the original Yugioh series that people call Season Zero, I think it skews people into believing that Atem isn't actually evil, even though he originally was what you might call a "villain protagonist". Another great example of how Atem was not exactly a good guy at the beginning of the series can be seen in his duel with Kaiba: after Kaiba summons Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon and Yugi begins to weaken it, Kaiba threatens to sacrifice his life if he isn't able to win, and Atem is more than willing to go through with the final attack, even if it costs an innocent person his life. After this, there are a few episodes in which Yugi is unsure if he can trust Atem anymore: it's resolved pretty quickly, however, and looking back on it, I think it was a missed opportunity to explore more of Atem's character, and give he and Yugi another obstacle to overcome. It also is this reason that ties back a little bit, for me personally, at least, to why I am not fully satisfied with the end of the series: we never get to see Yugi develop that much as a character, as a lot of his interactions take place through Atem -- Yugi is never really given much of a chance to stand on his own two feet until the final arc of the series, and even then, it feels more like it's being done out of necessity for the sake of advancing the plot, as opposed to having been something that he got to gradually work towards across the course of the series. Pardon the rant, but it got me thinking as I wrote this comment

Like Atem was basically a warrior of justice even when he was still evil while yami bakura was just a counterpart of Atem who was further corrupted by Zorc soul in the ring. Okay first off. Love the video and I totally agree with the idea that Bakura (pre-zorc) was the hero of his story. Though I feel like he falls more as an anti-hero of sorts because it was confirmed he was a thief and been tomb raiding. However, I will say that I don’t think Atem was inherently a bad or “evil” pharaoh. Maybe to Bakura and the village, but Atem definitely falls under a child with a dark family secret/history and unfortunately has to fix those sins.
Also in terms of the memory loss, I think that did affect Atem in his personality and judgment. My older aunt had dementia and her personality and her speech vastly changed, she was kind and very soft spoken, after getting dementia she became loud and aggressive. So like all the hypotheticals, what’s to say that despite being sealed away in the puzzle within the dark magic, being isolated from any other souls/people for 3000 (5000 in dub) that it would make him go insane and become the Atem that we see in the first chapters of the manga/season 0.
Also, I’d like to add that Atem wasn’t aware of what happened to Kul Elna or how the Millenium Items came to exist; the only ones that knew (besides Bakura obviously) was Aknadin, Aknamkanon and all those that were involved in the killing. So I’m pretty sure after hearing what happened Atem must’ve been horrified. I’m also pretty sure that there’s a good chance that while the priests are the ones who really get their hands dirty, I also feel like since Atem was young (confirmed to be 16) they never outwardly explained or told him what they’ve been doing to their people and rip monsters out of them.
Now I’m not saying that Atem is this perfect little angel, I’m sure he’s made his own faults especially since he was in charge of a whole country. There’s also a good chance that he fell under her father’s footsteps and was becoming the next figurehead until Zorc came into play. I’m sure he’s made choices that were morally wrong but considering he sacrificed his life and humanity speaks volumes where he stood as a person and as a ruler.
I’ve always liked to say that everyone is the hero of their own story. Bakura was more than justified to be angry and want revenge against the kingdom that stole his family and livelihood. But I also believe that it’s completely unfair to judge a person, a child, who never partook in any of the heinous acts that his family committed.
Sorry for the long comment, this idea is really interesting and I didn't realize how deep the lore and story really heads in. Either way enjoyed the video and thank you for bringing up the topic

This is an amazing analysis of thief king Bakura and I wish people would be more open to reading the nuance of this arc beside just what presented to them.
There a certain line that I love from thief king Bakura during his first fight against the priests and it is “What is “Evil”? If I’m loyal to what you say is right, is that all it takes to make me “Good”?”. The point of Atem not being a good pharaoh is also supported by the end of the battle where he gives Seto the crown, Atem and his father were naive and ignorant. They hid themselves to the true evils of their peace while Seto actually did something the moment he saw it. Also a small little facts, while snakes are usually a depiction of evil; snakes in a lot of mythology and religion are holy divine beings.

  • @RedDragonForce2
    @RedDragonForce2 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Not gonna lie, I theorized that the original timeline started like YEARS later than the ages we had in the Memory World. Several years later, where Atem knew Jono and Téana, the Egyptian previous incarnations of Joey and Téa. Atem and Téana fall in love, get married, and Téana gets pregnant with Atem’s child. Then, Thief King Bakura begins his assault. To keep his wife and child safe, Atem assigns Jono to protecting Téana and their child, leaving Egypt until the war is over. After Atem sealed himself and Zorc away, Téana and Jono return, finding Seto as Pharaoh, who despite leading a rebellion against Atem, was by his side in the last stages of battle against Zorc and was named King until such time as his own son was ready for the throne. Seto, for his penance, agreed to do so and thus kept the succession of Kings with the two families. Loyalty absolute to each other.
Then, 3000 or 5000 years later (depending on original or English Dub), Yugi is the great descendent of Atem, and the modern day version of him.
    Thoughts?

"Atem see's himself as a good and just ruler, but that's because we are seeing things from his point of view."
That's a weak argument to make at best, because you can flip the script and say the same thing about Bakura. We only see the destruction of Kul El Na from his point of view as a child. For all we know, the town really was a bandit camp full of thieves and murderers.
Furthermore, I wouldn't go so far as to call Bakura the hero... You're forgetting something, he's been robbing and desecrating tombs long before he ever laid fingers on the millennium ring. The first time Bakura confronts Atem and the Priests, he has a backpack full of stolen treasure and and Atem's father in tow.. You can even see Mahad in the background with the ring on his chest. So, yeah, some hero...

Consider that modern day Bakura is also an innocent, and that the Ring itself was a corrupting force, for both him and his father (as seen in DSOD). It's very reasonable to think that the Thief King Bakura was an avenger and not necessarily evil, and that it was Zorc and the Ring that corrupted him, too.

You really spoke! I’m glad you didn’t back down from the haters and naysayers. With that Kul Elna business being a village of thieves and criminals, you’d think they’d be on it by now. So I thought cover up especially with the method of getting the Millennium items made. All sides were getting the tragedy. And with Bakura, yes, if the story didn’t paint him the villain, I’d be with him. Sadly, Atem was now the figurehead of the conspiracy that he didn’t know. So yeah, all of this was too much to lose with Zorc ultimately benefiting from all this.

TLDR: Character consistency shows that everyone was just a victim of surcunstances created by Ahknad.
    1. Thousads of years of spiritual imprisonment. - S0 Atem is NOT the same one who ruled over Egypt. Being left by yourself for millenias would drive anyone crazy, so him being completly unhindged until Yugi gives him a few doses of talk no jutsu makes sense.
    2. Subcounjtious memories. - Why do the punishment games exists? Because, even if he dosent remebers the lesson, he knows that bad people, given the chance, will do bad things. So dosent give them the chance in the 1st place. It can sound cruel and evil at first, but honestly after a point its just the objectivly right thing to do. (For some reason Batman still refuses to kill the Joker and we all know what that causes.)
    3. The tablet. - Why does it exists? Why was it so important ro record hes duel against Seto specificaly, despite not documenting any other shadowgame befor or after that one?
A possible explanation is that Bakura was indeed the good guy and Atem understood this. If we move just a few things around on the memory worlds time line it becomes possible that Atem learned the truth about Bakura, the millenium items, hes piec of shit uncle and everything else a lot sooner. At wich point if he was a kind and just pharao would have made the responsible thing to remove those who caused them. Not giving the bad people the chance to do bad things again. He just gave Seto a chance to win himself out of troubble seeing as he was still new and manipulated by hes father. In wich case the tablet is record of Atems kind and careing nature while delivering justice.
(Than Zorc gets involved in the whole thing, finds Bakura eventualy and things go down hill.)
    4. Hes relationship to Mahad and Mana, mainly Mana. - On one hand its realy hard to stay an upstanding, good person if you grow up with a pice of human trash whos every word you are forced to follow. On the other would you stay loyal to that guy for 5000 years? On the other other hand its also difficult to grow up to be an asshole when you spend all your days with Champion of the people Big Bro and Sunshine Incarnate.
You could make the counter point that what see is just how Atem saw them and they could have been just as terrible as he was and youd bee right if it wasnt for DMG. Why her? Cuz' shes Manas innerself. Every time we see her as a character and not a piece of cards board she acts exactly like Mana did in the memory world with a bit more maturity added to the mix.

I don't think Bakura was born evil, monsters are made and that's what makes him so disturbing. He was just a normal kid in a village, only to watch everybody he has ever known and loved be killed and sacrificed in a magical ritual; that would spiral anyone from mental stability. This is why the final saga is so conflicting, yes he needs to lose to save the world but I wouldn't say his actions aren't justified in any way. Atem wasn't evil, neither was his father but the fact is the Items were created on his watch; albeit behind his back. (In the sense he wasn't told what the requirements to create the items)
Nothing Atem could ever say or do would rectify the damage inflicted upon Bakura's life. With that said though I don't think Bakura was doing it to benefit egypt or for others. He just wanted revenge plain and simple, plus the goals of Zorc through his influence.

Okay, I normally enjoy your videos. But as an Atem/Yami Yugi fan, this one genuinely ticked me off.
While I do like both Bakuras and can sympathize with their tragic situation - as I come from a tragic past of my own, and therefore have been known to repress memories and hold things back from my friends and loved ones much like good Bakura did - I can't ignore how you glossed over so many key points, just to make Atem and his family look like the bad guys. You mention one point where Atem's uncle hypnotized the soldiers in order to attack Thief Bakura's village, and in the same breath completely ignore how they were still under that spell when looking to get pleasure out of killing all who lived there, minus Yami Bakura. And Mahad had already explained the situation later in an episode, shedding light upon the gaslighting Thief Bakura was trying to use against Atem. Did we also forget how Atem's father came back and absorbed those tortured souls in order to save his son's life? And how he cried over the wrong's he'd committed? And Atem took fair action in defending his palace and kingdom overall. Just because the family did heinous acts, doesn't mean the child will be the same and deserves to carry the brunt of their late loved ones' actions. We see this throughout real-life history as well. And Atem was an infant and child at the time. And the fact he reacted the way he did when Thief Bakura spoke with him, shows that Atem had no idea that any of this had gone on. Even if Bakura had not told him the whole truth, hence why Mahad had to fill him in and reassure him. And as we saw in one of his childhood memories, we saw then Prince Atem showing empathy and shedding tears with his father, even if he didn't fully understand why his father was crying at the time. I'm not going to sit here and say Atem was a total saint, cause we all make mistakes, regardless of who we are. But I'm sorry. This is just you grasping at straws, in my opinion.
I still stand with Atem, and I feel sorry for anyone who was brainwashed into believing otherwise by this video. I'm not saying this as just a fan of his character, but also in general. But there is a bigger disappointment to me than just this video. And that's the fact that by the time we got to see the Ancient Egypt Memory arc, literally nothing we heard about or saw in the flashbacks in previous seasons was ever mentioned, shown or expanded upon. All we got was tone whiplash, bouncing back and forth between Atem himself and what was going on with Yugi and company. This was true for both the anime and the manga. And the whole thing of it just being one big Shadow Game just added to the disappointment. I don't know about anyone else, but that annoyed me to my core. I hate getting so invested in something, only to have that tone whiplash slam me in the face like a freight train. It wasn't horrible, but there's no denying this season could have been so much better. A classic case of wondering what might've been and could've been. Oh well... At least I could actually bear to watch it. Unlike the Ceremonial Duel. That still hurts many hearts, including mine, all these years later. Powered through it once, then never watched it again. But when something sticks with you, it really sticks. To the point you never forget it

Before I watch - Bakura is a bad guy but Egypt was much worse so his rebellion was justifiable and righteous in its own way. Bakura constantly references how he still hears the voices of the damned of Kul Elna so I don’t blame him for refusing to forgo vengeance for his people who were done so wrong. And I kind of feel like Bakura felt as though he could wield/game Zorc. TK Bakura says he wants to steal the world whereas Y Bakura/Zorc is more just about destruction and spreading darkness

After - Really liked the video and the points made, would’ve loved some more quotes/manga panels to go along with the points made. I agree and feel even stronger on my understanding, TK Bakura was definitely not EVIL until coming into contact with Zorc. not to mention Zorc is the one who made the Millenium spell book in the first place so if anything Egypt was abusing that power in secret not even alerting the pharaoh to the existence of such a danger.

Bakura's alignment in the *Yu-Gi-Oh!* series is indeed a topic of debate among fans. Let's explore it a bit:
    1. **Ryo Bakura**:
    - Initially portrayed as a kindhearted ally of Yugi Muto, Bakura cheered on his friends throughout most of the series.
    - However, he harbored a dark secret: he was possessed by the spirit of the Millennium Ring, a malevolent fiend seeking vengeance against the Pharaoh.
    - This possession led to Bakura's involvement in various sinister events.
    2. **The Dark Bakura (Yami Bakura)**:
    - The spirit within Bakura, known as Yami Bakura, was ruthless and cunning.
    - Yami Bakura manipulated events, collected Millennium Items, and sought to revive the ancient evil known as Zorc Necrophades.
    - His actions often put him at odds with Yugi and his friends.
    3. **Perspective**:
    - Whether Bakura was "good" or "bad" depends on perspective.
    - Some fans sympathize with his dual nature, recognizing that he was both victim and villain.
    - Others view him primarily as an antagonist due to Yami Bakura's malevolence.
In summary, Bakura's character is complex, blending light and darkness. His alignment remains a fascinating aspect of the *Yu-Gi-Oh!* universe, sparking ongoing discussions among fans. 🃏🌟¹³²Bakura's alignment in the *Yu-Gi-Oh!* series is indeed a topic of debate among fans. Ah, it seems you've mentioned quite a few fascinating topics related to anime and pop culture! Let's dive into some of them:
    1. **Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series (YGOTAS)**:
    - Created by Martin Billany (better known as LittleKuriboh), YGOTAS is a fan parody of the *Yu-Gi-Oh!* anime.
    - It humorously condenses the original series into shorter episodes, poking fun at the game's seriousness and unreal consequences.
    - LittleKuriboh voices most characters, adding to the comical effect.
    - The series also lampoons changes made in the English dub and breaks the fourth wall with clever references.
    - If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend checking it out! 🃏🌟 ¹
    2. **Multiversal Studios**:
    - Multiversal Studios has a Twitter presence, and it seems they're involved in creating content related to anime and pop culture. 🎥🌟 ²
    3. **Yu-Gi-Oh! Anniversary Trailer**:
    - Konami recently teased a new *Yu-Gi-Oh!* anime that could explore the rich lore of the card game's archetypes.
    - While not confirmed, the creation of an animation studio by Konami hints at exciting possibilities for fans. 🎴🌟 ³
Feel free to explore these topics further, and let me know if there's anything else you'd like to discuss! 😊Certainly! The **Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Game** is celebrating its **25th anniversary** on **February 4, 2024**. To mark this milestone, Konami has released an **official trailer** for the occasion. While details are still emerging, fans are excited about the possibilities. Stay tuned for more updates as the anniversary campaign unfolds! 🃏🌟⁴⁵⁶⁷
