Kaiba didn't travel back in time. He entered the Egyptian underworld in order to duel Pharaoh.
The movie was about everyone growing up and moving past the pharaoh, learning to move on and let him go, and about Kaiba not giving a fuck about any of that.
But Yugi didn't move past the pharoah as he still called on him at the end. But I love how they use the dub music

he didn't time travel, he used the dimension cube to travel to the afterlife. that's why atem recognised him and smiled, why all the guards were calm, and why atem's palace had a mirror image floating in the sky. also why kaiba was partially disintegrating around the edges ala dimensions.
so yes........he built AN ELEVATOR TO SPACE so he could literally fucking rocket launch himself to the fucking spirit world and play a children's card game with his dead friend.

Just wanna note the mirror image in the sky thing is a normal effect of mirages in the desert. But yes, it does appear to be the afterlife.
The motive actually isn’t ridiculous to me. Noah’s arc of the anime was most definitely filler but it borrowed canon elemets from the manga then modified them. One revolved around Seto’s adoptive father commiting suicide in the end.
In the manga, Gozaburo is also suicidal after losing to Seto. After Seto wins his company, his father says some last words to him and the commits suicide *right in front of him.* Even though Seto keeps a stoic demeanor he has very real emotions and psychological states. Seto was a young boy of 11 years old or so at the time this happened and took it to mean. *”To Lose is to die”* Thats why his psychological state as a teen and adult teen puts such a value on winning and he cant handle defeat. When he loses anything- he truly feels dead inside. When he wins- he can feel alive again. Defeating Atem/Yami means true victory and purpose.
Its ashame this wasnt included in the anime. It really puts his motives in perspective and shows on the inside he really just is a traumatized young boy, overcompensating to feel powerful.

Basically yes, very well put. Yugioh (at least once duel monsters became the entire focus) might be the stupidest thing ever concived in anime. Its basically a trading card game that somehow actually is used to decide real world issues in both political and economical. Not only that Kaiba literally invents and devolops hard light technology which would jump human civilization forward literally hundreds of years and now has invented time travel which would do god only knows what to further our understanding of the universe...and he does it so he can play a card game against some dude he has a hate boner for. However even though its bafflingly dumb, its done in such a crazy and epic way that its awesome.

If you really watch the Millennium arc, that will explain why Kaiba can summon Obelisk and didn't disintegrate. He probably has a strong Ka(energy of the soul) that's why he is unaffected by the Cube and Obelisk is his Ba(egyptian spirit monster) that he can summon instantly out of nowhere. There are a lot of shits going on in the manga and in the anime compared to the real game.
The duel disk being linked to Kaiba’s brain is how he was able to summon Obelisk. Do you understand? Kaiba WILLED that shit. He willed obelisk to appear because he was not going to lose when he’d come so far.
That's next level summoning. He made a machine that hacks reality on will, and he has the greatest will of all. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even need the machines to pull of this bullshit.
If you think about that concept hard enough, it sounds like the ancient magic used to summon the monsters back in the origins of the game.
They're this close to just magically summoning them like in the old days.
Ya, from Kaiba's point of view, the new way of dueling was his way of mimicking the way they dueled in Ancient Egypt, which is pretty amusing.

Eric Stewart and Dan Green never stopped doing the voices so that’s probably why they were able to sound the exact same. They regularly show up to YCS tournaments and duel each other. I love that they actually play the game and seem to love playing the characters.
Tbh if I could voice Atem or Kaiba I'd do it so often I'd probably forget what my own voice sounds like.

I like Atem appearing simply for the fact that they're fighting a shade of the past, Atem's job is unfinished, so he can return.
It just feels off.
Everyone is trying to move on without him expect Kaiba of course.
Yet here he comes out of nowhere.
It's also the consequence of Diva's vengeance: the paradise of the Plana was eternal as long as Atem didn't return, and we know now that there was no way for Kaiba alone to bring back Atem and doom them. Diva risking the world is what did it, and his friends accepting the loss of paradise now that he was okay was a show of true forgiveness.
@keepitsecret-dl1pr but if you think about it, you can honestly see it happening. Yugi held his own against Diva and Kaiba, which lead Kaiba to acknowledge Yugi was a true duelist, and not just good for housing Atem. He then hoes into fighting the monster Diva became with the Millennium Ring, Kaiba had already lost his life, Yugi was about to die himself, and they were facing Zorc's corruption. It made some sense for Atem to come back.
Kaiba could cure cancer, but instead he decides to risk his like to play a children's card game.

Ok yeah it’s no longer canon to DM and more of extending his life, but he kinda did it in the season 0 anime where he essentially gave an old man mechanical body parts to preserve his life. So he probably cured cancer.

This is probably a joke, but I like to think he actually won after the most intense duel they've ever had. And then he transcended to the same level as Yami, maybe even replacing him, as a guiding spirit to someone in the present.

The Card that Atem pulls, I think it was introduced slightly before or after the movie but it can be special summoned by drawing and gets its attack doubled when it fights a dark monster
So at least they made it a believable card unlike some cards in the actual anime
this is litterally a card designed to muder evil in atem's hands, the man has RNG manipulation so if bakura tried rocking up he could potention OTK bakura
it is a real life card named paladium oracle mahad, and yes its attack DOUBLES when it battles a dark type monster. its ideal if you use a dark magician deck.

Most forget but, the reason Kaiba can call Obelisk (and use him in battle city) is explained in the final arc of the show. Priest Seto is Atem's cousin, and the Heir to the throne if Atem dies, or has no children. before Atem returns to the preset, he makes Seto pharaoh. So Seto is a pharaoh, thus being able to summon the gods. he just prefers Obelisk

I'm gonna be honest, I think Atem returning to stop Deva was important for a reason that most don't consider:
The Millennium items are relics. They're figments of the past. Kaiba went digging the past up and brought the troubles forward, interrupting the flow of life that the gang was starting to step into. And when the past almost consumed them, Atem returned, *destroyed the Millennium Ring and Puzzle permanently*, and then left with one final goodbye. I see this as him recognizing that he can't allow his past to threaten his friends, and he came back to clean up so they can get on with their lives and not have to keep dealing with his story.

Dan Green was one of my main reasons on why I went to see this movie at theater - no lies. I too wish he can be in more animes but ever since the lost of his wife due to childbirth, he had to take care of the two kids he was left. So I give the man more props that he found some time to do this for us fans.
MetalPcAngel Man, knowing that, makes me wanna hug the guy. That has to be hard for him and his kids.. Just looking at him, he gives off that vibe of your favorite uncle who always wants to play your favorite game with ya or take ya to the mall every weekend.

One of the things I absolutely love is how accurately Bakura's panic attack is portrayed. As someone who suffers from PTSD, they showed the raw reaction of being caught off-guard with trauma accurately. You remember things incredibly well and with vivid details. The panic of reliving the trauma sets in, and BAM, incapacitated for a while. It's incredibly accurate and shows the depth of the trauma Bakura suffered at the hands of the Sennen Ring.

I dont think it emphasizes the moment at all. Another youtuber explained it perfectly. Yugi had long accepted that Atem was gone, even telling Kaiba that he wasn't coming back. Not once during the duel did he ever say something stupid like "I wish Atem was here to save me". He fought with all the confidence and power he had gained by the end of the series. It was just that he was a kid, a mortal. Only Atem could stop something like the millennium ring.
Also Kaiba didnt time travel, he went to the dimension of the dead. He was able to do it cause he swiped Devas cube. You can see it in that scene.

Regular Yugi beat the sprit of Bakura that was sealed in the puzzle and basically was on top the entire duel.
And while Dark Marik isn't quite as crazy an entity as the villain from this movie Joey still came within a few seconds of wiping him out, something Kaiba and Marik both never expected.

Defeating Yami Bakura in a relatively normal Duel (besides the stakes) is different from defeating Dark Diva in a Duel where Yugi was absolutely exhausted and where all his energy was being drained from the Shadow Game. This Shadow Game was more similar to the brutal ancient Egyptian games and on par with, if not even worse, than Yami Marik's Shadow Games.

He demonstrated that by beating Kaiba (or he would have if the power hadn't gone out), but then the villain was using egypt dark game bullshit. Since Yugi isn't a mage, and none of his life lessons in the original series had anything to do with learning how to leverage the Millennium Puzzle's mojo solo, really the only way to go was calling on the magic bullshit guy.
It's still an incremental boost over the original series by having them actually cut in and out of each other, implying they're in sync and performing the final move as one instead of the usual Yugi watching as a ghost from the back. YGO's a fucking weird shonen manga for not having the deuteragonist ever learn to use his token macguffin. Like yeah he's surpassed Atem in raw card game ability but what about the dozens of other games in the series, the ability to induce permanent hallucination, put guys in personality-correcting asspull Izanami comas, or just straight up warp probability and cheat when necessary? This movie's proof perfect that Yugi's the perfect successor to Atem in the context of mundane overly polite modern Japanese society, but the minute anything supernatural happens he's fucked and it's up to Kaiba's tech-bordering-on-magic to even kinda stand a chance. Hell, if Yugi were thrust back in time solo and had to wrangle Pegasus alone, he'd be fucked since he's got zero protections against dark game passive stamina drain or mind reading.

Wasn’t the whole point of the show was Yugi surpasses Yami.
PhantomDragon3 it was also showing that Yugi could face the world on his own, and to his credit this movie brilliantly showed he could.
While Yugi missed his friend dearly he was able to move on and be his own person, and everyone knew that moving on was for the best. I mean think about it: KAIBA was the one who became obsessed with bringing Atem back, just for his "rivalry." But Yugi? Yugi was just fine.
Plus, something that people tend to overlook: Atem CHOSE to show up at the end there. Yugi did not call him nor did he even consider calling for him. He showed up all on his own to help his friend because he WANTED to (or at least that's what the movie heavily implied).
Honestly, seeing this movie was one of the best cinema experiences I've had. I saw it with a bunch of friends who I met through playing the game and a bunch of people from our locals. It was the perfect crowd for this kinda movie that you could just feel the love we had for it. The jokes we so clearly written with fans like us in mind.

I think we can give the pharaoh scene a pass since Yugi had shown his maturity and growth throught the movie, he missed Atem but he was the only one who truly accepted he had to leave and it might be dumb but I like how his last line is about him believing in the heart of the cards instead of just giving up and calling the pharaoh, I think Atem's return is kinda like a reward for him not giving up on doing it by himself, so the pharaoh went like "ok you've stood your ground against a magic kid possessed by pretty much egipcian satan, I guess I'll help you even things out a little bit"
and the way yugi's face is superimposed when the pharaoh plays his card shows that it's not ALL Atem in there, yugi is also playing that card
That's also why the scene after that is so good, they don't need to talk to each other, they just nod and he's like "yea yugi, you got gud"

To me the scene means as much to Yugi as it does to us. It’s fan service no doubt, but the fact that we saw the film is us coming back to a story we know we’ll have to say good bye, but really we just wanted to see it one last time.

I just adore kaiba's character in this movie so much, if nothing else for how honest he was with yugi. Boiling it down to "I respect you, I know that you're a great duelist on your own right but you will never be him to me." I mean everyone said it for years but this movie just flat out admits it; the Pharaoh is Kaiba's best friend.

I have to correct you on something here. Kaiba doesn't actually make a time machine to go back to Ancient Egypt as that Atem didn't know him yet. Kaiba uses the Millenium Cube (Aigami somehow has the 8th millennium item) to go into the afterlife to duel Atem by making a machine that travels through dimensions. In my opinion, that is a bigger flex.

You really have to admire the sheer will and determination of kaiba... The fact he was an orphan and had nothing to become what he eventually is shows how awesome he actually is. He would've beaten everyone in this film and actually found a way to break the laws of physics to travel to the afterlife is astounding... I can't see how you can root for him to succeed after all he has been through.
Atem is the only one who ever beat him fairly and he cannot exist with that hanging over his head, no matter what laws of nature or gods stand against him. He's probably dead, stuck in the afterlife still losing duels but at least they're together and that means more to him than anything; even his own brother, because he knows that Mokuba's well off and capable of running the company he's neglected for years anyway to chase after this dead guy he obviously is crazy in love with.

I always wanted Bakura to be fleshed out more. Yami Bakura is great and I've always loved him, but I always wanted to see more of the trauma and effect that being under his influence would've caused Bakura. They show it a little bit in this film when Bakura kind of starts having a panic attack cause he doesn't want to remember the day he got the Ring, but I'd like to have seen more of it. There's also a scene in the series (I think season 5?) when Bakura is running away from the voice of the spirit and is freaking out - that shit's great. I know it's ultimately a kids show and those concepts might be a touch too dark to get into much detail with, but I'd still like to see it. Still a fun movie though.
