Listening to the late Bob Kreiger, who was the engineer that day on 844, tell this story really puts in perspective how much power they were putting out on the engine as they were burning 52 gallons of oil a mile!!!! Just goes to show the power of steam engines and the upside that they still have despite being out of service on a large scale for over 60 years.
@@rainierbagatsing1073 Okay, I gotta disagree with you there. More powerful than diesels? Absolutely. More powerful than electrics? Uh... No. The most powerful steam locomotive by horsepower was the PRR Q2, at 7,987 horsepower. The most powerful single-section electric loco is the HXD2B, at 12,874 horsepower, well exceeding that of the Q2. You COULD argue that by tractive effort, the N&W Y6s beat anything at 166,000lbf, the SD70ACe-T4 beats it at 175,000 to 200,000 lbf, and, while the SD70ACe-T4 is a diesel, it's a diesel-electric, so it's possible to make it into an electric locomotive, add ballast, and then you have an electric with more tractive effort than a Y6.
A few years ago a old Prussian G12 was used to transport new railway sleepers, because the diesel locomotive was out of order. For that single day she was in active service to help in railway maintenance, like she was 100 years ago.

Dang it, I wish I knew that fact earlier! Enjoy the pin!
@@TrainGuru Bob also talks about the infamous doublestack train with 3985.
Can't wait for everybody in the comments section to be like, "Well actually, 4014 did it as well, just to point it out."
I'm already one step ahead!

Up 4014 was the 1st union pacific steam in years to help a freight train up a steep hill ever since up 844 did in 1996
@@regularguy7266 guilty as charged XD
When needed, steam can deliver! UP don’t play!
3985: hold my beer
“That’s a story for another video.”
Goes to show that steam locomotives can still be very useful to this day
Agreed, steam locomotives may not be as efficient or fast as diesels but are stronger than diesels and electric engines

Since 4014 was refitted with a dual beam headlight, they can hopefully put the mars light back on 844 when it comes back.
And This Is One The Reasons Why Union Pacific 844 Is One Of My Favorite American Steam Locomotives
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
@@TrainGuru You're welcome
We don’t call them “bankers” here.
I’m sorry I missed this video.
"I can't do it! I can't do it! I can't do it!!" Said the UP diesels.
"I will do it! I will do it! I will do it!" Puffed 844

Or as I like to call it "844 and the Diesel Engines"
To those of you who were confused about the 4014 reference, stay tuned for next week!

can't talk about one without the other 😄
We call them helper engines in the business.
Calling a helper a banker is a certifies Thomas fan brainrot moment
I may be a Thomas fan. But it just rolls off the tongue better.
I remenber hearing about this years ago== but Ithought it was he Big Boy
I already know 484 Northern 844
Funny, your video ends at 6:11 😂
That was intentional! It was meant as a little dig that 611 may be better. Nice way to rub it in… 😈
