Our Brand New F350 breaks down in the middle of nowhere Ep5

  • On this episode we pick it up from our last episode, leaving 40 mile beach camp on the search for the next camp site. We drive through a mine site to hit the mouth of Fortescue River along the way we get bogged and I nearly run my wife over as she films. Then our truck breaks and we have to limp it back to Karratha to get it looked at.
    It ends up on the back of the truck sent back to Perth with a safety recall, and we have our lap of Australia paused for a while.

    We are a family of 5 travelling Australia indefinitely in our new Lotus Caravan and our 2021 F350 from Harrison F-Trucks. We will take you to many destinations and let you know what works for us and what doesn’t, so you don’t make the same mistakes.
    We are from Perth Western Australia and want to see as many destinations as we can together as a family, we never take the easy road and if we see a track, we always wonder where it will lead us, so we generally take it to see where it leads.
    Thanks for watching and reading if you have made it this far down, hope you enjoyed.

    Crushed that housing like a tin can! Holy Cow! Possible suggestion for upgrade in the future is to get a set of custom leaf springs to suit your 4" lift, rather than the stock leafs + 4" lift block. With the torque you're dropping down to that back axle (ala when you were getting out of the bog), that axle is using the 4" block as a lever allowing for some serious axle wrap. May or may not be a contributing factor to the flogged uni and axle housing. Or add some ladder bars. Food for thought. Great rig and setup, hopefully the repairs don't ground you guys for too long. Cheers from Las Vegas, NV.

      @miniwhatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      A set of thic boy track bars would help too. So much weight and torque going through the rear diff it needs more support. Or if you get the Kelderman then it will all be linked up and tough. Props for showing it how it is. A cruiser/patrol chassis would bend in half trying to pull this much weight with 1000Nm+.

    • @johannesschaller5510
      @johannesschaller5510 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Spot on. I'd argue that anything over a 2" lift should be managed with either a combination of new springs and smaller lift block or just new springs, as well as stiffer hanger bushes.

      It was a thin walled differential tube. I am here to tell you guys I have owned Ford's Chevy's all of them that size and bigger and truck in America. In the snow belt where everything rushed. I have never in 50 years seen a axle tube crushed. And I mean no disrespect but we hall a lot more here in America our roads are bigger and our laws allow us to do so. You are pulling virtually nothing of weight behind that truck.. Compared to what we pull here. Those same axles here tier in many cases are pulling 30000 pounds on a daily basis half a million miles every 2 or 3 years. They're there really must have been a bad batch

      @@willydiesel2081 No mate. Australia is a lot harder on vehicles. If a vehicle has a weakness, this country will soon expose that weakness. American vehicles do not do well in Australia. It takes a very special kind of person to buy American in Australia & you have to be extra special to think you can do it & won't have problems.

    The best way for a permanent fix/ upgrade for the air hose. Go to a hydraulic shop & get a length of blue high temp air hose used on truck compressors with appropriate fittings crimped to each end to run from your compressor to air tank . Poly airline is not suitable where there is heat .

    • @lappingtheisland
      @lappingtheisland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      cheers mate, all over it, I've got the braided lines going on between the compressor and tank so the heat will dissipate before it gets to the tank. Cheers for the tip though, appreciate it.

    Also another tip, if you're hunting air leaks, put a little dish soap in a water bottle and poke a small hole in the cap.
    You can spray the areas and watch for bubbles. Much easier than trying to fish your fingers around feeling for a puff.

    Many years ago my neighbour who was an avid family adventure traveller of remote places long before Facebook and TH-cam. They where Toyota die hards but wanted something bigger then a 79s/200s for towing. So they bought an F250 for touring worst decision he made in his entire life he told me. The transmission died once and rear differential twice. Also found the wheel track too wide even on places he'd been before which ment lots of tyre punches.
    They found taking two vehicles was much more practical. Spreads the load with the caravan and they could take a safer boat to use up north. Also less arguments 😅. Simple single cab gvm upgrade 79s to tow the caravan and a Isuzu D-max dual cab for the wife/kids to drive and tow the 4.5m Quintrex. Sadly by the time they got everything sorted he was diagnosed with aggressive terminal cancer 😑🥺😰😥
    That's life though! Can be nasty at times...

      I made a comment on your rig run down on another channel (sorry not subscribed to other channel and was suggested and in turn subscribed here) about wanting to learn about touring our great country.
      As a truck driver I must admit I love your set-up but curious if you had to do it again would you go with the same set-up or something more like an all terrain off road truck?
      I guess it's still only early days with your current set-up but for someone who currently has the desire to get out there so bad but with limited funds I'd love to know your thoughts on doing up an off-road isuzu or iveco, possibly even a unimog.

      I haven't had it long enough or got it to the destinations I took my 200 series to compare to anything or wish I had gone in another direction. at the end of the day you get what suits you and what you want to do there is no right or wrong set ups.

    The Ram is gone now and I am had made the decision to go back to a Ford before I saw your video. It looks like you just got unlucky with the axle and I hope that the replacement works out well for you. Every manufacturer has issues. Enjoy your rig and safe travels.

    Sorry to hear about your situation with the F-350. I have seen lots of bad reports on the 5.7 F-350's from RV owners in the USA with a multitude of problems. Hope you can get it fixed soon...

    Mate, good on you for being honest in what happened. I'm getting pretty jack of hearing all the bullshit that goes on TH-cam channels, that you know, is just a paid advertisement for someone. It's refreshing seeing your content I tell ya! 👍👌🍻🤙

    Not good to see the RIg on a tilt tray, interested to watch the progress. Reality is mechanical things break, what is important is that the dealers own up and fix the issue. We all need to know who does and who doesn't. Thanks for the vid.

    Toyota/Nissan fan boy here, lived and worked in US for 5yrs for power generation company, they had fleet of big fords, chevs, rams and Toyota tundra (US made) all were rubbish, constantly in the repair shops, now back in Aus, either take my trusty T/D 80 series or GU patrol, and didn't need tow such a big caravan for my family travelling Aus, never ever had 1 prob with patrol touring Aus

      Of course...but what do you get to tow a trailer like this...a 6x6 Landcruiser ...migth be ligth...

      Lived all over the world and owned a ram 3500 dually. If you drive American trucks like you own them the f150+ and tundras are ok. The biggest failures I've seen were teething issues or misuse. P.s. not a fan of them just sharing my experience

      Toyota and Nissan will never tow or carry a load like this. Every vehicle has its own issues. Some are good , some are bad. Vehicle manufactures aren’t in the build something great business. Money is made in repairs.

    In the States ford has recall for the axle tube crushing. I would check with Ford for warranty work.

    Review of supplier records found that a design change that reduced the axle wall thickness in the spring seat area had been incorporated for the Model 275 rear axle beginning August 6, 2020.

    Thanks for telling it as it is. It’s good info for all of us considering buying an American truck in the 2500/3500 range. Good feedback on Harrison’s.

    That ARB compressor won’t last for what you need. You need something with a 100% duty cycle like the VAir 330C-Hyper Grade or the Scintex with a carbon fibre piston in it.

    Mate, rather find the bugs straight out of the gate than later on. Ending up on a tow truck was one of my fears when traveling with my family. I reckon that rig will be great once they’ve sorted it out!

    The air bags might upset the absorbing balance of the diff housing and attributed to damage. if it was mine I would remove it. The insurance might just turn to this this point next time. Nice dig for the max Traps and good luck.
