  • In this video we answer as many questions as possible from last weeks episode ( • Ford F350 Written off,... ) where the car was left written off and why we didnt have a snorkel. we go through the rest of the story with the insurance company and we announce what car we will continue our travels with.
we are also selling our 2021 23.3 foot triple bunk caravan to upgrade to a newer one so check out the walk through video here • 2021 Lotus Triple Bunk... if you are interested please message us or email us at quinns@lappingtheisland.com.au
If you liked the video, please like and subscribe and turn those notifications on, check out the rest of the videos that we have made and let us know what you like about them and what you don’t like and please make sure you follow our journey on all our Social other media plat forms.

We are a family of 5 travelling Australia indefinitely in our new Lotus Caravan and our 2021 F350 from Harrison F-Trucks. We will take you to many destinations and let you know what works for us and what doesn’t, so you don’t make the same mistakes.
We are from Perth Western Australia and want to see as many destinations as we can together as a family, we never take the easy road and if we see a track, we always wonder where it will lead us, so we generally take it to see where it leads.
Thanks for watching and reading if you have made it this far down, hope you enjoyed.

    I’m in Perth.
Mate and myself both have had F trucks - which died after a water crossing.
It’s so common with F trucks.
There’s something you & your mechanic need to know.
There’s a electronic component called an IDM (Injector Drive Module), that is sandwiched in the LH front mudguard, between the inner & outer skin - that is low down behind the front left wheel & they get wet in water crossings.
The IDM controls when and in what order each cylinder fires the injector.
It takes a signal from the Crank Position Sensor, and in conjunction with the ECM (Engine Control Monitor), and tells the HEUI (Hydraulic Electric Unit Injector), when to fire and how much fuel to inject.
When they get wet, dust on the 9 pins electric connector plug (8 for the 8 injectors & 1 common earth return), tends to arc across the pins in the wet dust particles, creating a carbon arc circuit that burns into the connector & causes either one bank of 4 cylinders on one side of the V8 or worse case all 8 cylinders just stop firing.
It took about a week after a relatively shallow water crossing with the vehicle sitting parked (we were sheltering out a cyclone in Pt Sampson) before the problem surfaced.
If I were you I would have that IDM cleaned off with electrical contact cleaner spray (CRC product in the blue & white can) to remove any dust / mud that’s built up on there and especiallyany carbon arcing across the 9 pins.
I ended up needing a new IDM from USA to get the F250 working again.
We were Pilbara based & no Ford Dealer in Karratha (F Truck was still under Ford warranty).
Took 8 months & 3 repairers to figure out what was wrong and how to fix it.
    Cost $15k
After Ford having agreed to have it repaired in Karratha rather than tow to either Broome or Carnarvon Ford dealers for warranty work, when the car was fixed and the bill arrived Ford refused to pay the claim & I had to stump up the $15k to the repairer to get my keys and vehicle back & that only happened when I got the local Karratha Police involved threatening yo charge the repairer with vehicle theft. 🙄👎
Lastly you said the mechanic cut open your oil filter and found copper particles inside it?
When I had my F250, I used to run “used oil analysis” with both Westrac here in Perth through their laboratory every oil change (every 5000kms).
And I also halved the used oil sample and sent it off by post to Oilguard in USA for their laboratory to also analyse - as a way of making sure Westrac weren’t p!ssing in my pocket while telling me it was raining & I did actually catch them out giving false results and trying to convince me I needed to buy a new engine from them, when the same oil sample analysed in USA came out perfect, zero problems.
Mechanics and even big companies like Westrac aren’t beyond lying when it comes to fleecing insurers out of big $ for entire engine replacements.
If I were you, I’d have sent your oil off to at least 2 analysis labs before I wrote off the engine in it and spent a small fortune on a new one.
Copper in oil isn’t unheard of, some NEW oil straight out of the container has a few ppm (parts per million) of copper in it new from the oil refinery.
It can get into the oil in the refining process.
I bought an after market oil sub-micron filtering kit for the 7.3F250 from Oilguard in the USA and ran it on my F250 the whole 14 years I owned it & the guy bought the F truck off me is still running it.
Keeps the oil clean of soot, the engine will literally do a million kms no problem if you change oil regularly every 5000kms and keep it clean with sub-micron bypass oil filtering in addition to the factory canister filter.
My Effie was a 2004, 7.3, Intercooled 4x4 TD dual cab with canopy.
I also had a LPG system where it ran diesel & LPG at the same time.
Had a long range 250 litre Diesel tank & 160 litres of LPG.
Had another 200 litres of drinking water in stainless steel tanks as well.
If I were you with your new engine I would be using oil analysis to monitor the condition of the oil from day 1.
You will always know years ahead of time if any potential issues are going on in your engine from the used oil analysis results, in time to fix any pending issues before they leave you stranded.
From memory - the published wading depth on a F Truck is only 700mm max.
Typically in USA the only time a F truck encounters water 700mm deep it’s frozen snow & doesn’t get into the mudguard to flood the IDM pins connectors.
But things are different here in Oz.
Mates F250 had the exact same wet IDM issue as mine when he did, a water creek crossing down Albany way.
Guys name is Bevan Steele (ex copper) & he owns “Steelo’s Guns and Tackle store in Narrogin.
He can tell you all about his experience with F250’s and water.
We often joke that it only takes a cloud to appear of the horizon for a F truck yo leave you stranded. The feckin things are allergic to water.
Like I said, I’m in Perth. If you’d like to catch up for a chat about a preventative maintenance schedule for your F truck then flick me your email addy or send me your mobile number to ianmoone1111@gmail,com and I’ll send you my mobile number in return & we can catch up to give you the low down on how to live with a F Truck in Oz & not go broke doing it.
I would like to speak to you about adding a snorkel, there’s serious safety ramifications for your family’s safety in doing so that no one in the 4WD fraternity ever discussed.
Not saying don’t do it, just going to say avoid the plastic ones and ONLY use stainless steel.
    Hope to catch up.
    Cheers.

I have a 95 Toyota surf, cooked motor in June and got my car back last week. That Mackanic sounds like mine

Wow 😮😉👍 so happy for you guys 👏👏👏 yes always question the insurance company. Any way on your snorkel 👍, and the bull bar 🤙( that’s a wobbly hand ) think your probably better off as you are, as your truck is fairly high , just go for a solid bumper. If you look at bullbars ( particularly Toyota) they are war too close to every part of the vehicle. If you hit a roo you basically wipe out your bonnet grill radiator , fan left and right mud guard head lights. If you didn’t have a bar you’ll probably only wipe out grill , radiator , and fan 🤷‍♂️ think it over 😉👍

You guys have had such a bad start with the big F truck. No fault of yours or the truck mind you. Just a bad set of circumstances. Who was to know about a bad bunch of axles, and Murphy said one of that batch (at least) would end up in your hands. But now with the time out of the trip to fix the axle, and this engine issue as the follow up, what a damn shame. I was relieved to hear Part 2 where the F truck gets a new heart and you guys continue the adventure. The wife and I are a bit older, but we are building an Overland Raptor in the shed right now and will head out next year with it. Solo vehicle with no van or camper so pretty much non limited to where we are going to venture. Good luck to you all and we may just see you in the bush someday.

Holy freakin batballs Robin!! You guys have been through the wringer!! Seen you before but randomly came across this vid . . . . you need a holiday hey 🤣😂
Maybe time for a vid about some self taught deep meditation, full body stretching and massages to get rid of all that hectic stress you've endured 😜
You've got a new sub and heaps of happy vibes coming your way!
Main thing is you're all healthy, now just to add the real happy into it all!
Good luck with everything you deserve it 👍

It was supposed to happen your thoughts are right. It is not because of the journey you made and the struggles you went through and the people that helped you, it is what you have done in your life before this and the help you have given to others in the past that we don't know about, this is the reason why your whole family is safe and healthy and you got your car back.
    Happy Days.

In that 1000km with the new motor make sure you get some corrugation in. Make sure that the cab bolts etc are checked at the first service again. I've learnt that the hard way.. 1000km without corrugations and then going remote and having the cab come lose

It’s good to hear after all the time & investment, you don’t have to start over again. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer so you can start your journey again. Glad your son is on the road to recovery. Best wishes to you guys & your family ❤

So good to hear that you get your car back. Just wondering, since the insurance company said they would cover you for water damage for the next 12 months, is that conditional of you staying insured with them?

This really highlights why not to buy an import and convert American truck! Just buy from factory supported dealers!

Hot tip: For the first 5000km treat the engine gently so that it has a chance to open up and run smoothly in the long term👍
