Special Announcement!!! -- I have my offshore boat back! That video is dropping shortly and I already have fishing videos in the works! We're finally back in action and it's time to get back to what we're all here for. SCREAMING FISH ON! Thank you all for keeping me motivated while my boat was down the past 6 months and the content was slow. I'm finally excited to sit down and edit footage again knowing all the great adventures that are ahead of us. I went from having 0 boats to having 2 boats! It's game onnn baby

Hey just a tip 39:01 on the tape here- pull off the tape at the mid-to-tail end of the drying time. Right when it won’t run, but it is soft enough not to clutch the tape with its life. Also, I haven’t read the instructions for this epoxy, but generally, you want to apply subsequent layers of epoxy while it is not all the way hardened. It helps with adhesion between layers.

Good video about rebuilding an old boat.
45 years ago my father and i went in together on an old 13’ boston whaler. We bought is in early April , go it home and had to repaint the damaged gel coat, replace the rotten wooden side console and reposed it with a 25 hp evinrude.
Being 15 years old I had time to do all of that after school and on weekends, We finished in time to test drive it on Memorial Day. We towed it from Maryland to the my aunt’s condo in Hollywood, FL (and then down to the keys for numerous snorkeling trips).
Your build reminded me of that old whaler .

@@SouthFloridaFishingChannel I kept that boat for 15 years and eventually refit it again with a 65hp mercury engine. It would run about 40 mph and even pulled water skiers!
I traded it in on a new Ski Brendella inboard ski boat in 1990
I have since purchased and rebuilt a 1978 Jon Dory's 16’ skiff with a 35 hp merc, it is about same size of the whaler but is a bit faster cause it has a flat bottom.

Awesome job with the Jon Boat restoration project. My dad had three Jon boats and a fiberglass V-hull when I was a kid but never done anything like this to make them more comfortable. The first one was made of plywood which was constructed really well but only had paint since epoxy wasn't available way back then and spent its last few years rotting away in the backyard after he got his first aluminum j-boat which he sold or gave away a few years later. Then he bought a used j-boat that was covered in tar on the bottom to prevent leaks but it didn't work that well, then he finally bought a used fiberglass V-hull which was fine but he only used it once and then spent about 20 years sitting on a trailer in the backyard until he gave it to my brother who uses it to this day.
For a project that big, I would've went epoxy from the beginning. The can spray-paint method I would use on small projects like patio furniture or something but not a boat. Being retired Navy, I would be tempted to go with haze grey on the outside, red on the bottom, with a black water line, dark grey on the deck with a three or four inch black border on the sides up from the deck, white on the handholds and other fixtures, and do what you did to the inside with the tan, cushions, and everything else.

🙏, not sure if anyone else has commented on the coin found but it was an old tradition to place a coin under a mast when a sail ship was built. This was some sort of a protection myth. Look it up to see exactly why. I have enjoyed the odd bit of humour. Nice job on the restoration 😎

Thanks for this excellent video as I now find myself in the "same boat"...was looking for a 12-14' when I saw a 16' with a motor on a nice trailer at then of a driveway...1987 Polar Kraft 1648...2010 Tohatsu on a perfect trailer...$900! Needs some repair to the transom but the trailer and motor are worth more than the purchase price... Will be repairing and updateing the boat over the next few months...

My Jon boat has started leaking so I am in process of stripping bottom to apply new Fasco coating. But I discovered something I thought you might like. I purchased a pressure washer sand blasting kit. It attaches to the wand on a pressure washer. It works with play sand it’s available from Amazon for 30 bucks. It sucks the play sand or beads up and takes it down to bare metal. I did the entire outer Hull in 1.5 hours. The aluminum doesn’t get hot the metal retains its proper shape and strength. After watching your video and the time u we’re having stripping the paint. I sought out different methods to achieve the smooth bare clean hull. Keep up the great vids brother Tightlines from the Outerbanks of North Carolina!

The next time gueing down these large pieces of foam, put some wood or metal strips on the glue and put the foam on top so it does not touch the glue yet. Then line-up the foam and remove the strips one by one. This will give a perfect fit without the worry of starting at a wrong angle.

Started looking for a small 12-14ft Jon boat last week. After looking around, I had expected to spend around $3-5k. Mentioned it to a few coworkers, told them to keep their eyes open for something on the side of the road. One of my coworkers said his girlfriend's father had a boat just sitting in the yard and his wife had been up his ass to get rid of it. Drove out to get it that night... Ended up with a 12ft Jon boat with two trolling motors for free; Boat doesn't leak a drop of water and the trolling motors both work great!

  • @kevmt9056
    @kevmt9056 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Tech tip: do the beige part first then tape off bottom to do the black part. That way you only have to tape once. Also a super slick surface will create drag in the water. A rough texture will create tiny air bubbles reducing drag allowing the boat to cut thru the water more efficiently.

i agree with you about the Jon Boat. I'm up here in Northern Ontario and bought a basically new 1236 for $600. I paid more then i maybe should have, but i knew the owner and didn't want to try and get him down. The harder thing to find is a decent motor for a fair price!!

Good job on the boat brother! I remember when my wife and I stripped all the paint off our jon boat but ours was a 1976 that had more layers of paint on it Lol! Some advice on the stripper, you can thin the stripper with a slow dissolving solvent and spray it on with a pump sprayer and it covers so nice and even to where the paint starts literally falling off the boat. Enjoyed the video brother!

I refurbished several boats over the years I lived in Key Largo including a couple of small inexpensive super-fun runabout types like your John boat shown here in this video. As you no doubt learned along the way there are always better and cheaper ways to breathe new life into an old boat. Like forget the expensive black spray paint and spray-on truck bed liner and try using rubberized concrete roof coating to help waterproof your small aluminum boat. It will all but eliminate hull vibration noise, seal-up rivets, seams, through hull fittings, and it reflects sunlight to make your decks, benches, and boat interior much cooler in the hot sun. Great job on fixing up that little boat for a skinny water runabout for the Bayside Sounds in the Florida Keys. Enjoy.
