    The best campaign i ever ran in roleplay or miniatures, was a mordenheim campaign.
    Every week, I published a single sheet two sided “news paper” called “The Troubled Times” that set up by the register at my local game store, free to everyone.
    In this paper would be:
    A recap of the week before
    News and rumors about “our” Mordenheim
    Warp Stone would sell in shards like shares in the stock market, so you could see what it was worth that week and if you was going to hold in to it or sell.
    A Highlight if a character.
    Buy and sell section of equipment
    Folk would get involved because they would see it by the register. Most customers read it (this store was also a comic book store) for the stories. It was just so much fun.
    The campaign was ran off the exploration chart where 6 6’s and you could find this legendary treasure (a scenic piece of warpstone terrain piece i made that actually was the trophy for winning the campaign). Unbeknownst to the players was defended by a giant Rat where they played a special scenario.
    The exploration chart would also reveal special characters that could help you along the way:
    First player to get 3 1’s found Halvo the Hungry Halfling who could add one to your exploration die role. He would stay in your warband till he found Marcus the Mapmaker you would get if you had a exploration role of 4 5’s and would give you a 6. On and on and on.
    It is where i learned to really build terrain and by far the most fun I’ve ever had.
    I love everything about AOS, matchplay and all. However, I want campaigns to as easy to run as this was. I want con events to be like this. Most of all, I want us all to talk about things like it more.
    Thank you again!
    Will

      Thank you two.
      You really do a lot for our hobby.

    Revising the rules seem a good method to counter the optimal plays. Forbid rabbit's foot, make ppl fight with 2 hand weapons get a -1 to hit, half the cost of armours, make a system to modify armour not scalling with strenght and try new/unique scenarios or campaign books (BTB comes to mind). Then, with changes, it's like love at first sight again ;)

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, its a good way to change the rules and rekindle some of the flame. It is a temporary fix at best, as you have only changed the best temporarily. There is a larger story here of course about any competitive game with options. Over time, when competition is the goal, the best is found and eventually the repitition can cause burn out.
      If the challenge was to add integers up that equaled 10 in the smallest amount of individual numbers, eventually, you would come to something like 7 + 3 or 6 + 4. If I then said you had to use at least 3 numbers, maybe you would then go 3+4+3, or so on. In the end, change is required in a competitive option game to keep the cycle of unlocking alive.
      Thank you for watching and commenting! :)

      Vince Venturella Ty, I'm glad!
      Hmm wise words. Yes, the sooner you adapt to the new rules, the sooner the burnout starts again.
      I know there isn't an easy solution and that solution wont be the perfect to everybody, but I think if the campaign goal changes from tactical into a more rpglike interactive story (so the battle just doesn't unlock more wyrdstone and gold) may be a good point. And we'll make the most of the essential narrative that makes Mordheim itself.
      Rumours and fluff will keep people guessing what's the real goal of the campaign and they will feel like a part of the story, not just a player in a tournament.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vince Venturella A good example: Fanatic Online campaign ´Thy Soul to Keep´ from issue #51, #56, #60; hosted freely in specialist-arms(dot)com/fanatic/
      I guess is only 5-6 games long because publication management. It has a good setting, it's based on the official lore, includes several narrative characters and scenarios, anybody can win in the last game but in the end feels like everybody won.

    The best game ever made , in my humble opinion.
    A true miracle .
    I remember the little fever and fear we had in 1999 to change to 2000. Even the more "grounded" people had a weird feeling this year.
    Mordheim is the game that caught this feeling in a bottle , and kept it intact .

    Played a game last night. I am mostly a 40k player, but Mordheim has a definite charm to it, that 40k lacks. I think this is largely, as you stated, the lack of connection with my individual guys in 40k; and that is even with me being a soldier playing IG (or AM now), so I connect with them as close as possible.

    Excellent video Mr. Venturella! Since Squidmars recent video about Mordheim including his interview with Tuomas Pirinen the wheels of the TH-cam algorithm have been turning up Mordheim content for me. This excellent video is the intersection of professional presentation, game design analysis and Mordheim enthusiast sales pitch. I love it. My brother and I both have copies of Mordheim and have played many games and one long term campaign. Emotion creates memories indeed. Great line. Cheers

    Great video. I have had a copy of the Mordheim book on my shelves since it came out and have never played it. I loved it for the fluff alone, enjoyed reading through the tables and mechanics and even painted up a faction. After watching your video it seems I have missed out and will be dusting it off to give it a go. Thanks.

    Good video, thanks for sharing. It's very interesting to get a game design-perspective on why Mordheim is still clinging to life after all these years.
    I'm going to try to get my local WHFB players to try Mordheim sometime because I really want to play it, but I've got so much else going on so who knows when that'll end up happening. Until then, I can live vicariously through TH-cam Mordheim batreps ;)

      @VinceVenturella  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A good way to live, I find myself doing it often as well ;). If you are looking to sell you group, just point to them that everything is free, they already own miniatures to use (as almost anything goes) and it takes about an hour to play. That is a low barrier of entry for sure. Good luck!

    • @RossFigurepaintingCoUK
      @RossFigurepaintingCoUK 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vince Venturella The low entry barrier is why GW dropped it of course! Same with Bloodbowl. I have just about every figure from every team (conversions rather than the expensive official stuff) and even all grouped together on the same side it would barely be enough figures for a modest sized Warhammer army

    Sometimes victory is a defeat and defeat is a victory. I always loved playing mobile warbands, so either Skaven or Witchhunters (ahh, dogs) or just aggresive (Sisters of Sigmar or two already mentioned). While playing Skaven with such tactic it was often great to lose - kill lots of enemy units, grab some wyrdstones, lose 25% and immidiately lose rout test. Game would end with me rolling serious injury for very few units, usually henchmen, having several stones, while enemy had little or no gathered stones, multiple injuries and even with bonus to searching for stones, I was advancing more than he and losing less units. And even if I used very bad tactic quick rout fail was saving me from huge losses.
    We played on base manual with just few Town Cryers, as I see later there were still a lot of rules changes. Plus It was like cards for us - things we did not understand we agreed on some interpretation for whole campaign. That was also great to learn the game. We even played often with incorrect miniatures, for lack of correct ones while testing things, like using Warhammer skins as goblins or skaven.
    It is sad that there were no balance updates. Some equipment was too cheap (metioned here rabbit foot and lucky charm), some were without any sense to use. Very quickly all units if possible are running with two swords (because of parry), sling (so cheap - Skaven are deadly!), then other equipment. Since too much depends on who hits first and how powerful, generally Heavy Weapons are not used (always strike last) but Flails are OP for units that cannot use shield (Flagellants) - with 5S if you hit, you almost always wound, no armor save.

    Games with similar mechanics are doing very well today. Take a look at the serial rpg'ish games like FFG's Decent, and the Star Wars version, Imperial Assault. Sure, there are lots of differences, but there's more alike than not. Small skirmish oriented miniature teams, objectives on a board you can fit on a single table, the ability to paint up your team. Not looking to debate the differences, but lets take a look just at the game play. There's a cohesion between games, and that creates not only an ongoing story based experience, but there's a connection the player has with their warband/team/characters as a result. You get to see them increase in power, take debilitating wounds, and risk not only serious injuries, but get killed off permanently. You can customize not only the equipment on each characters, but convert up the models to fit exactly what they have (true wysiwyg). Other games, like Necromunda, and Gorkamorka, had the same mechanics in different settings and they also still maintain a fan base that keeps playing the systems. I think GW could seriously take this as an opportunity to resurrect the game, and update it. Perhaps we'll see that in part of the 9th rules, which is supposed to include a low level skirmish type mechanic. We shall see, but until then, I'm enjoying Mordheim, for all its flaws, its still got spark and still fun to play.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree completely. What I find interesting about Mordheim is it struck a cord deeper than Blood Bowl or Necromunda (both of which predate it). Part of that may be the fantasy element (which is traditionally a much larger segment of the gaming industry - in RPGs for example, its something like 80%), but I think it was also because it was one of the first real mainstream games to tie all of these disparate elements together. It is certainly a formula that others have since run with, often to great success.

    • @RossFigurepaintingCoUK
      @RossFigurepaintingCoUK 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vince Venturella I wouldn't put Bloodbowl in that list. BB hit a massive chord and still does. There are loads of us still playing it, there are tournaments, world organising bodies and rankings, online play, computer games and massive online community support including officially endorsed new rules sets and teams. There are also a range of companies producing new figures.
      BB has just about all the factors you mention about Mordheim including campaign options, injuries and upgrades plus a handicapping system to allow more even games between mismatched teams.
      In the UK you could play in a tournament almost weekend and like me are probably near at least a couple of active leagues. My experience is that Bloodbowl is far more successful and popular than Mordheim which I never see being played anymore... apart from following Anthony of course :)
      Funny enough one of the controversies has been the launch of a Chaos Undivided team which is considered overpowered. Something to ponder for Warhammer after end times :)

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ross FigurepaintingCoUK Interesting. I wonder if its a UK thing (which would be ironic given the source material), but in either event, I feel its probably splitting hairs, as they are both clearly enduring for many of the elements we listed.

      @@VinceVenturella I am a fan of both games.
      Blood Bowl is simpler to implement online and has been with fumbbl.com since many editions.
      The NAF has been organizing world cups every 4 years and I already have attended to two of them.
      As mordheim doesn't have a lot of fixed 'pitch' to play on, it's that more difficult to implement in a universal way.

    I've never played but this makes me wonder... could you use the Mordheim rules to run more of a table top RPG with one or two players (with small warbands working together) and a GM controlling the different enemies they come across? Would that work or is it a square peg in a round hole and you might as well use a regular RPG.

    Everything that you think is good about Mordheim you will also get in abundance from Necromunda and Blood Bowl, in fact Blood Bowl is by far the most intense, fast paced and stressful tabletop game i have ever played. I would give almost anything for GW/Forgeworld to occasionally run minis for the old specialist games :(
    Im with you generally in defense of GWs business practices but i really think they underestimate the value of having a few games supported with a low cost to entry and easy campaign rules, even if they run at a loss they can attract customers to the hobby. Easier for a screaming kid to get Mommy to invest £100 into a game then £500+ then that kids visiting the store every week surrounded by other cool minis.

      Vince Venturella It seems like such a no brainer for FW to pick up support for specialist games, the demand is there. GWs adamant refusal to do anything with these properties is the one thing about them that just utterly baffles me, its like our tears give them power :(.
      For 9th i would love to see a sort of "Combined Arms" ruleset allowing for Mordhiem style skirmish campaigns and massive scale battles all from the same miniature pool. If they could pull something like that of well it would be an act of genius on GWs part imo.

    Mordheim owes its existence to Necromunda which came out in ''95. This lead to Mordheim being created for fantasy with how much Necromunda pulled in the 40k players. Mordheim's rules and layout come directly from Necromunda.

      Cs Dn Absolutely, the reality is, everything I say for Mordheim could pretty much go (more or less) for Necromunda or Blood Bowl, both of which also still have big followings and have many of the same strong points. My experience happens to be stronger in Mordheim, so I choose to stick to what I know. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I tried to give Mordheim a chance, but like all fantasy, it's not for me, that's for sure.
    Here are the disadvantages for me personally:
    1. Square bases. (No. No and no again. Never!)
    2. Fantasy world. (Never loved it. Again, I gave this a chance, but it's not for me).
    3. Elitist community. Or even elitism². If fantasy fans consider themselves "firstborn" and "only true fans" above all, then Mordheim is "an elite of the elite."
    More recently, an old friend of mine offered me to buy his original Mordheim band, but while looking for money, he sold it elsewhere. Unpleasant. As a result, there is not a single Mordheim model in my collection.
    And one last thing: now everyone is talking about the return of Mordheim 2.0 along with the new old world. I pass. Thank you but no.
    However if it was in the Mortal Realms, on the Ruins of Ulfenkarn, for example, it would interest me.
