There's a mild audio error at 11:52. I've re-rendered the video multiple times and for some reason, it kept showing up like this, despite not being in the actual edit. So we're gonna have to deal with it I'm afraid.
StaySkeptic yeah, most of the recent anime styled games, excluding a few, are starting to take on this generic look that I don't like all that much. Like the recent xenoblade chronicles 2.
Dudes I am SO sick of the generic anime style lately. I haven't watched any anime (except JoJo) in years because of it. I love the grittier more realistic art of 90s and early 00s anime a lot, but it seems most studios depend too much on digital tools, and getting things out as fast as possible these days. There are exceptions of course, but to me, most shows and anime style games look like they came rolling out of the same factory.
Lemme bury this nugget for those who find it. The game is honestly criminally underrated and deserves a solid play through by anyone with the bug. Go in blind and just enjoy, it's not so crazy or difficult you'll find yourself looking for help. There was a feature where you could take notes and back when this was new, my girl at the time was across the country so we would literally mail this back and forth with notes hidden in the game. Good times all around. Very nostalgic for me and always a solid recommend. The writing is good, the pacing was fair and it rarely felt "dry". If you're prone to adventure/point and click games you're bound to enjoy this one.
I remember playing this game when I was like 9, and until now it’s always been in my mind as just a generic point and click ds game, kinda crazy finding out it was a cozy masterpiece
Same! As a child I kept playing just to see "the pretty animations" until I got stuck because I had no idea about what was happening. But I never forgot and today I finally finished it on the emulator. Great game.
I beat this game this year too. The sequel is better in many ways than this but this game had more 1970's feel to it with the writing. Last Window pretty much got rid of the witty catch phrases and 70's feel to it. I love ya vids bro! I look forward to all interesting gems you play.
I just picked up a copy of this from a local store for $16.95, complete in box! It's the Touch Generations reprint with the yellow label on top, not the original full-art, but that's OK. Some psychopath put a yellow PRE-OWNED sticker on the art insert, but Goo Gone and careful precision saw it removed without damaging the picture, and your video helped get me through it.
great video and glad to see Hotel Dusk being reviewed. Hands down one of my favorite games on the DS (and in gaming in general). I even ordered the Euro/Japan only sequel Last Window from the UK. Great games
oh boy this videos older than i thought! but anyways, one game you might find interesting is "Chase: Cold Case Investigations - Distant Memories" it was a Hotel dusk esk game that was made by some of the og people after Cing went bankrupt, its a 3ds eshop game so its pretty accessible, i dont know how i feel about the game, its definitely has style but doesn't have refine, anyways yeah, your latest vid was pretty sick btw.
Thanks for this video, I’ve been waffling back and forth about giving this game a chance. I’m not really into the Phoenix stuff so I wasn’t so sure it’d be up my ally at all. I’ve had it on my sd card in my 3ds for years, now imma play it, so ty:)
The animations in this game are freaking amazing, and the soundtrack kicks ass as well. I used to use the OST of this game in my Vampire: The Masquerade sessions. That raises a question: Will you cover Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines someday, Thor?
Raise your hand if you're a person who got: 1. Take Mila with you at the end ending (You can achieve this by finishing the whole game 2-3 times) 2. Give Mila a gift at the end (secret ending)
The golden age was the 70s and the assholes were mostly known as normal people (who just hadn't discovered PC or sensitivity training yet and therefore were just being honest). Twin Peaks came out in 1990, which means it somewhat reflects what things were like in the 80s, though David Lynch also likes to throw a 50s vibe into his characters, which is why his films always seem oddly out of place. The sequel to Hotel Dusk, Last Window is set in the 80s and does a very good job with reflecting that era.
Your sarcastic review is valid. But as a kid working this game through and through I really enjoyed the experience. I loved the music, art style, and story. Wish you played it when you were younger. Maybe you wouldn't be so sarcastic. But maybe that's the whole point of your channel.
You should check out the sequel too, Last Window. On the other note, great video about a great game. And I love the joke about 1970's assholes acts like 1970's assholes. That got me good haha!
I’ve only just found your channel and, you have exquisite taste in games sir! Hotel dusk, Silent hill, Shenmue! Aaaaaaah I’m going to enjoy your channel!
This. Game. Is. Fucking. Great. Yes yes and yes, I love this game and it's that much of a core memory to me that I just recently dreamt about its mechanics again except my brain turned it into a mix of fnaf for some reason but yes this game is fucking great

i played hotel dusk for abit and it seems really interesting so far but i need to get back into it, for these sorts of games i need to play them at a good pace since i finished games like root letter and virtues last reward recently. great review on this game
I tried playing it when it came out but I got stuck at a certain part. I had a bunch of items and I swear I’d checked literally every room in the game and tried everything. They didn’t have online guides back then. I still have it. I should try again
Yeah. I wasn't too sure about it because of the weird "real people" look the characters have. But I checked it out for a little bit while working on this video, and it really seems like something I'd enjoy.
Hey man j just wanna say that I finished this game and it was soo so so good. The story was such a gem and it was all wonderful. Though, there were a few annoying moments in it for me which mainly involved the gimmicks and mehanisms
There's a game called: Chase Cold Case Investigations. It's made by the same team as Hotel Dusk and last window, just working under a different developer. It's a budget title for the 3DS, but it's very similar. The Phoenix Wright and Danganronpa series, are also roughly in the same vein, and of course all other games made by Hotel Dusk's developer Cing, are quite similar too.
Kathy Rain is great if you're looking for something with a similar tone in dialogue and warm cuteness in tone while still having a TON of voice acted lines compared to almost any other investigative adventure game with an intimately small main cast and an endearing main character.
When you get to that last room and worry about how to survive the endgame and have to regulate your breathlessness this game really does show its strengths off. I don't appreciate the ways it waifu-izes a kid that literally stopped aging at like 8 or 11 years old so I have a lot of scathing hatred for how it contradicts itself but.... this game has a pretty neat fucking artstyle, praise fucko

I remember watching a friend play this and digging the art style a lot. Thanks for the reminder to pick this one up! Good review as always
Man this is refreshing to see new people enjoy this game, Id like to know if you have played the sequel
The artstyle and conversation is hella good
yes
I'm glad i'm not the only one that the soundtrack reminded sometimes to Time Hollow. Or 999.
I played this a long time ago but never finished it. Art style was fantastic though.
Just played both of these games in the past week. Man, it's really a shame that we'll never see more.
I cried at the flour stamp. I couldn't figure it out and got frustrated and had to close my DS...
Man even when he was a babyboy Thor had some madass aesthetic skills damn
I love the art style so much. I kinda wanted to get it mostly for that.
Also have you played Lux Pain? I gave up on that one.
I was going to because it looked kinda cool, but it reviewed poorly across the board, even in Japan. So I'll probably skip that one.
I blame the translation. Like it seems like that it'd be decent if it were translated well. But it seems nonsensical from what i've remember.

I actually really like the fact it's a slow build it makes sense. I used to have a copy I wish I still had it.
Dreams End (Game Over Song) is imo the best one together with Last Sleep (Cellar Theme)
As it turns out, this is indeed rotoscoping. Just done with an added layer of traditional animaton on top of it.
Ah the Allo'Allo' soundtrack in the beginning:)
"Cheeky, mischievous and down to jest" summarizes most American conversations in that kind of setting.

Some things to consider:
At the time, the touch screen was novel so light puzzles like the ones in the game were quite interesting to show people
Because the DS was probably your first and only device in your house with a touch screen, the touch screen navigation was part of the game's fun.
It was quite cool walking around the hotel in the game, the art still holds up and the ost was cool
But for today's standards the pacing is tiresome and dull. The strong points of the game are well put in this video.
