It's been a while since a game genuinely impressed me, and Bonanza Bros. turned out to be quite the hidden gem. I'd seen console and computer ports of it back in the day, but had never actually played it myself.
The game reminds me of Mappy, albeit with far better graphics and more variety. The stealth-lite gameplay is really quite innovative for the time, and the graphics still look beautiful, even by today's standards. Even more impressive is the fact friends can play together in split-screen coop, which only adds to the fun.
The game uses a rather curious base resolution of 496 x 384 (no doubt required to accommodate separate play areas for both players). I experimented with 400% (1440p) and 800% (4K+) upscales, and the 800% produced sharper-looking streams (inc. 4K and 5K options), so this the option I went with.

Wow. Most streamers forget to play the training stage. I'm genuinely impressed.
A forgotten classic. Thanks for bringing this great game to our attention.
Beautiful upscale - wish Sega would return to their classic franchises, they have so many.
For 1990 this has to be a pretty good arcade game
The Bonanza Bros. - inseparable team, notorious thieves, wanted dead or alive for a 100 bucks.
These were considered high resolution graphics back in 1990. If memory serves it ran WITHOUT the characteristic scanlines every other game of the era had, it's not just doing what emulators do by default and taking the scanlines out, they were never there to begin with, at least not in the arcade version. It was so rare, that 11 year old me couldn't figure out exactly what it was about this game that looked so 'clean', just that it did. I remember having the same experience several years later when finishing Tekken 2 on the PS1 and getting to the credits roll. Again, it ran in a high-res mode without scanlines, but scanlines were so ubiquitous that I just couldn't describe what I was seeing in a section of game where they were no longer there.
Always loved the music and sound in this game. Played this a lot on a plug and play console.
Payday: The Beginning
1up arcades needs to make this into a mini arcade machine like all their other arcade machines.
Somebody needs to put the arcade soundtrack on TH-cam already.
I bet more people remember the Mega Drive variant than the others lol.
Adjusted for inflation, the Bonanza Bros. have a bounty of... 244 bucks.
16bit gameplay videos in 5K, now we're talking :D
You're very very good at this game because it's brutally hard.

Fun game. It kind of reminds me of the old "Keystone Kapers" on the Atari 2600 for some reason.
