You could find yourself facing criminal prosecution for doing your job, and there’s so much cop hate on the internet it’s just not worth the risk anymore. My greatest fear in my last few years was being forced into another deadly confrontation and the media destroying me & my family. Think long and hard before taking this major step.

I have felt little to no support from public as well as my department. i have been extremely unhappy, financially unstable, and feeling burn out. I am putting in my notice tomorrow. I am scared of the change, and I am worried naturally im making the wrong decision. However, I have prayed hard and thought for a few months about my decision. I worked with dogs prior to BLET. I absolutely love animals and caring for them. I feel as if that is my true passion. I would love to have my own dog grooming business, and i have the unique opportunity to have one. I am far past my time to leave (26 yrs in and 49 years old). I have stopped giving my agency 100%, it in the lazy way, just old enough to realize it didn’t pay off. You may love your agency, but it won’t always love you back. Now I am in it for selfish reasons and keep track of our pension fund, which is 100% funded and one of the few in the country that is. How do you turn it off? What I mean is, people tell me that I'm really intense and some find me intimidating (part of the job sometimes). I don't have many friends because when I'm off, I only want to go home and not be out anywhere. I don't know how to NOT conduct myself in that manner after doing it so long.
Thanks, I had the same concern as well. And honestly, after about a year it all faded away. As your familiar, while in uniform, your presence is the first force on that continuum. But, once I left and was just a little ol insurance salesman, I really started to notice that my presence really didn’t have the same effect anymore. For whatever reason, I stopped giving off such harsh, “I’m a cop” vibes. After a decent amount of time of not having the same effect AND not responding to calls or being put in similar situations for so long...it stopped being a big deal. Also, in social situations, people started seeing me as an insurance salesman, and stopped asking me about the craziest things I’ve ever seen, or vent to me about their political views on law enforcement. Of course, I still have above average situational awareness...I still have a few quirks, but...as far as being jaded, not wanting to be around people, all of that is gone. Similar to what you’re saying, I used to live out in the country on 17 acres...and as soon as I was off work, I tried to see as few people as possible. I now live in the city and my office is right in downtown...no issues. I don’t think you’re broken or have anything wrong with you, I think anyone that is put in sucky situations day after day would feel that way. And once you stop being put in those situations, it’ll start to fade....that’s my experience at least. Happy to talk more if you’d like.
Hey brother. On turning it off, it doesnt really "turn off" so much as you come to certain realizations. - Dont hang out explicitly with cops. "Normal People" let you see different aspects of the world, different angles, and they remind you that youre "just like everyone else". I would suggest a hobby that is social. I grew up doing martial arts (Judo, BJJ, Escrima, Boxing, Kickboxing), and I keep tried and true to it and it puts the focus on the task at hand, blows off steam and its not just a gym but a tight knit community. It works for me and a few of my guys. Plus if you roll/practice/spar/grapple before a shift you're always mellow, cool and calm. - "Whats a cool story?!" They want an action story where you and your guys are the heroes. Have 2 or 3 just on standby. A pursuit or just a really awesome act of humanity, bravery, or kindness shown by another human being. - "Whats the worst thing you've ever seen?" look dude. Most people dont think to go deep and dark. They're expecting car crashes and shootings, action movie kind of crap. I just tell them that the worst thing I ever saw was when I saw "Meet the Spartans" when I was stone cold sober. It was pretty awful. Still have nightmares about it to this day. I do more crisis response stuff rather than door kicking and hookin and bookin. Check this out brother. The old way of dealing with pain was that you are this canvas, and the blot is the pain or trauma. Spray that canvas with the waters of time and eventually that pain washes away. I actually am a fan of a more modern method of thinking. Think of yourself as real estate. The pain and trauma occupy an area, a significant area. But as time goes, you grow. The pain may stay the same but the emotional real estate that is you is growing and growing where the PERCENTAGE of space occupied by the pain becomes less and less. Also read Marcus Aurilius. Stoicism really is a mindset we should be adopting. No its not about cold hearted calculations, but it really is about love and growth. We LOVE life, and those around us that we have decided to take up the responsibility to take ownership of ourselves- our lives, feelings, emotions, thoughts, mindsets, and we move with a purpose. You recognize the issue. You recognize that it is an issue and it is a detriment to your life and well being. That means you are aware of it, and in time you will be on it. Another one I like is this. Your mindset, your "go to" place in your head is like a path. You want your mind to think a certain way, so you actively have to put your head in that space. Think of a destination. You want to get to that destination, but you have the jungle in your way. You have to cut your way through the jungle, in time the pathway to the destination is cleared. The more you consciously put your head in that desired space, the more a path forms. Eventually that foot path becomes a walk way, a sidewalk, a road way, and eventually a freeway- you default to the desired mindset. It just takes a lot of work and a little bit of time. Everyone is an expert in law enforcement, except the men and women who actually do the job.. I would never encourage the youth of today to become a member of the US military or law enforcement.. What a shame.
30 years and retired. We need good police officers out in the field. Life is tough and there are no free meals when it comes to law enforcement. You have to have that grunt mentality to work as a police officer. Everything was hard working as a police officer but I took it one day at a time. I now have a full pension with supplement attached. I have full health benefits as well. You keep God in your life and he will protect you. We need to promote the good and not the bad. Without police we will live in a lawless society. Due to the shortages around the country in law enforcement we are getting closer to that. There will come a day when everyone with a gun will take the law into their own hands because no one wants to go into l aw enforcement.

Following. I'm 8 years on. I can't take it anymore. It's literally eating me alive, destroyed my 4.5 year relationship. I just don't have anything to fall back on. Basically entry-level jobs making shit money. About a 3x pay cut id take going back to the civilian side, which is why I haven't left yet. I'm making 100k/yr as a basic street cop. Hard to give that up for a $17/hr part-time job.

I was active duty in the military for 4 years, did 3 years with corrections, and 45 years police patrol. With mandatory retirement in 3 months, I would stay if they let me. My most favorite assignment was running a midnight-basketball clinic with inner-city kids for 2 years. Was invited to many graduations and wedding afterwards. I was a cop for 24 yrs, sgt for 12 yrs, Lt for 8, and captain for 1. Wish I could stay for 10 more.
You weren’t exposed to the garbage on the streets cops are dealing with now. THAT is why you’d like to stay longer. I dare you to come to Philadelphia and say you’d like to stay 40 years. Every single cop I see has one foot out the door here.
Also…you was a street cop back when cops were allowed to be cops. See a group hanging on the corner? Make them leave or ELSE. I got a taste of the final years of that as a Rookie. 14 years later and we aren’t allowed to even chase criminals anymore. All cases get thrown out so what’s the point in arresting them?!
Been in the local S.O. for about 6 years now and keep looking to walk away. The local county commissioners and the sheriff can't keep up with the current pay and times. We just got a large Amazon Warehouse in Appling Ga. Most Deputies are only making $20 an hour, and Amazon is paying people starting at $15 and up. Why risk your life for $5 more an hour? It's time to hang up the boots, just having a hard time finding the right thing for me. Tired of security/law enforcement/military work. Love technology and building computers but difficult to find a start without capital. Built computers since I was 9 years old.
Hi I'm not a cop , I work as an accountant in a company but i feel the same way, i wan to put my efforts to be able to provide and live a successful life so i can relate.
I have 101 days left. 20 years keep health insurance and a pension. Insurance becomes secondary payor when Medicare kicks in. They will not get one more day of my time. I have things to do. I have been planning and saving for a long time.
I am ready to get out after 20 years, however NC has a 30 years retirement. I have PTSD and I am trying to figure out what I can do. I struggle being around crowds or groups of people when I am not on duty. I am trying to figure out how to fix my issues and will be seeking counseling. This is something I have never had to do my entire life. I already told my Chief if treatment does not help I will be getting out of it within 6 months. Any suggestions for someone like me? I do like wood working. I will watch more videos but any suggestions will help. I only know I have many crime scenes that visit my thoughts often and dealing with that is a big issue at this time. Any NC Officers that know about how our system works please reach out.
I was a cop in a major city with an extremely high crime rate. Went to multiple shootings a day. Chased bad guys kicked butt you know the deal. The agency policies changed to where our hands were tied. I was very proactive and good at getting the right people locked up. The hiring standards lowered command staff began calling themselves managers and the list goes on. I left after 10 years back in 2014. Financially I've well exceeded what I made as a cop and honestly I was with one of the higher paying agencies in the country. But with all that being said I have many flashbacks both good and bad. I keep it out my mind for a while then it all comes back. I do miss it alot. Some days I want to go back other days I say keep doing what iam doing. However iam board out of my mind. Now things are expensive and iam raising a family so there is some obligation to stay for the moment. My attitude when I left wasn't the best and now I see that. Perhaps a change of scenery is good for you a different area to work or different unit. Try and find something outside of work to keep you're mind busy. But the thoughts and flashbacks I don't think go away you just have to deal with them and try to look forward not backwards.

I don't associate with cops off duty. I don't shoot guns. I don't do anything related to cop work when I'm off. I even got rid of all my social media with cops added. I disassociated myself completely from LE. I hang out with civilians now. Do civilian acts of 'fun'. Let's just say that. This career is eating me up and I'm on the fence of saying dueces. I would not recommend any become a cop. 8 years on saying this.

I’m tired of being a city cop. It is worse than Sin City here. All the cops want to leave and just come for a check. No one’s heart is in it. Morale is in the toilet. Everyone is waiting for retirement or some job in another state.
You’re lucky you have 12s That means you have 2 days off every 2 days! 😂 I’m working 8s which actually means I’m working 12s becuase the shithole city I work in doesn’t have enough people….and my days off suck. Feels like only a few hours off a week.

Been in the local S.O. for about 6 years now and keep looking to walk away. The local county commissioners and the sheriff can't keep up with the current pay and times. We just got a large Amazon Warehouse in Appling Ga. Most Deputies are only making $20 an hour, and Amazon is paying people starting at $15 and up. Why risk your life for $5 more an hour? It's time to hang up the boots, just having a hard time finding the right thing for me. Tired of security/law enforcement/military work. Love technology and building computers but difficult to find a start without capital. Built computers since I was 9 years old.

I have 101 days left. 20 years keep health insurance and a pension. Insurance becomes secondary payor when Medicare kicks in. They will not get one more day of my time. I have things to do. I have been planning and saving for a long time.
I am ready to get out after 20 years, however NC has a 30 years retirement. I have PTSD and I am trying to figure out what I can do. I struggle being around crowds or groups of people when I am not on duty. I am trying to figure out how to fix my issues and will be seeking counseling. This is something I have never had to do my entire life. I already told my Chief if treatment does not help I will be getting out of it within 6 months. Any suggestions for someone like me? I do like wood working. I will watch more videos but any suggestions will help. I only know I have many crime scenes that visit my thoughts often and dealing with that is a big issue at this time. Any NC Officers that know about how our system works please reach out.
I was a cop in a major city with an extremely high crime rate. Went to multiple shootings a day. Chased bad guys kicked butt you know the deal. The agency policies changed to where our hands were tied. I was very proactive and good at getting the right people locked up. The hiring standards lowered command staff began calling themselves managers and the list goes on. I left after 10 years back in 2014. Financially I've well exceeded what I made as a cop and honestly I was with one of the higher paying agencies in the country. But with all that being said I have many flashbacks both good and bad. I keep it out my mind for a while then it all comes back. I do miss it alot. Some days I want to go back other days I say keep doing what iam doing. However iam board out of my mind. Now things are expensive and iam raising a family so there is some obligation to stay for the moment. My attitude when I left wasn't the best and now I see that. Perhaps a change of scenery is good for you a different area to work or different unit. Try and find something outside of work to keep you're mind busy. But the thoughts and flashbacks I don't think go away you just have to deal with them and try to look forward not backwards.

@@justacommenter4361 I thought that when I left but like I said I go back and forth on it. One day super glad to be done the other I want that rush again. Make too much money now so it makes it harder to go back even with another agency

I don't associate with cops off duty. I don't shoot guns. I don't do anything related to cop work when I'm off. I even got rid of all my social media with cops added. I disassociated myself completely from LE. I hang out with civilians now. Do civilian acts of 'fun'. Let's just say that. This career is eating me up and I'm on the fence of saying dueces. I would not recommend any become a cop. 8 years on saying this.
