    One of the things I love about Brian is how he doesn’t use complex terminology and how he even forgets what he’s used and certain musical definitions. He’s very laid back about it. It gives him a real innocence No showing off and no music theory. Anyone can learn and play and know music extremely well if they want to, but very rarely are people TALENTED with music and songwriting abilities.

    • @davidnissim589
      @davidnissim589 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Brian didn't need to know all those terms, he was just a natural master of harmony.

    Paul McCartney can't read notes and Brian Wilson doesn't know technical terms like 'inversion' and yet they're among the greatest songwriters of their time. I think this says something about the reductionist approach to music theory, and maybe to a lot of other things as well.

    • @raywalsh2190
      @raywalsh2190 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Eddie Van Halen couldn't read music, either. Seems like the great ones just use the instruments to express what they're feeling. (And, as opposed to the chicken/egg question, we know that instruments, however simple, came before sheet music. So ...)

      Learning everything there is to know about grammar and vocabulary doesn't mean you'll be able to write a great literary work. It's the same with music, it's a talent to be able to express yourself like that, which is why many studio musicians schooled in theory cannot actually write successfully

    • @allenjones3130
      @allenjones3130 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Beach Boys, led by Brian Wilson, basically created a new version of rock'n'roll music, using repeating rhythms, and phrases ... to the point that it caught the attention of the four lads from Liverpool, whom made a very specific point of recreating it on subsequent albums. And, yet, somehow, Brian Wilson had never heard the term "ostinato" before? Ok.

    Can anyone help me understand two bits of Carl's initial comments, here? I can't quite make them out (too many years standing in front of an amp line). The first comes at 0:16 while Carl's discussing his CO days. He says, "I guess that (....) really stood out to me." The other is at 0:25. The first one is "I guess that sort of really stood out to me" and the second sounds like "the sequences in Vietnam". I think he's alluding to the Vietnam scenes in Forrest Gump.
