    I did my first ever 10km race today. Managed a 57 minute time which I’m so happy for and I have to say thank you Seth for being the inspiration to get me running when I found you on TH-cam a few months back 🙂. You’re an inspiration. I’ve booked my second 10km race for 2 weeks time! This one will be hills and trails, I live in the Scottish highlands so plenty of big hills and trails here! 😄

    Seth, you single handedly saved my training for my first marathon. From guiding me to the Hoka Rincon 2, to enforcing that you should take your easy days easy, to teaching me recovery methods. I could feel an injury coming on, but now I'm feeling good and ready to race!

    Fantastic review, thank you for sharing, I think I might wait for version 4 just in case they make some changes and actually improve the midsole.
    I still have the one but use it only for speedy workout and race day as well for 5km, 10km and half marathon.

    Thank you SJD for an honest review, when you first started this vlog it sounded like you were going to give the Rincon 3 a 9.5 overall score, but 7.5 is fair. I tried the original and was very disappointed that they were just too narrow in the toe box for me. I even went up a whole size and they just felt like narrow clown shoes, on me at least. The 2 & 3 are a bit wider, but then the durability has meant none of our local suppliers stock them so I can try them on, and the pandemic has presented major barriers to going to our capital city to try them. I think Hoka is moving in the right direction, but unless they develop an alternative to tradition EVA, they will struggle to make their shoes light enough and yet durable enough to go the distance without creating a rock, which is how our local stores described the CarbonX. Blown EVA is 1980s technology and Hoka needs to innovate to keep up in the road shoe market at least.

    I've been very impressed with these after about 30 miles. My last Hoka road shoe was the Clifton 1, whose upper was so bad it was almost unwearable for me. They've really come a long way in terms of comfort, and I'm amazed that they can make a midsole this soft also feel so springy.

    QD: Where to begin, considering I'm a car guy. I guess mine would be when my buddy and I went to the NASCAR race in Talladega, AL back in 2006. We didnt have a hotel near by, so we were driving back to his Air Force base in Fort Walton Beach, FL. He told me we needed to get back before shift change, or the guards would search my car, so on the highway I opened up my Mitsubishi Eclipse I owned at the time and far exceeded the speed limit to make up time. Mind you, its about 0100 time. As I'm driving at high speed, adrenaline rushing, I look over at my spotter/co-pilot/best friend and he's passed out asleep. Luckily, we never got stopped, but he didnt wake up until we were just outside the base entrance. He looks and me and looks at the clock with utter confusion. We made it before shift change at 0300. The next year, we went in a camper and rented a spot in the infield. Much less stressful...

    QD: group of friends and I were driving from Ohio to Myrtle Beach, SC. Big group so 3 cars/SUVs were needed…pulled over to get gas & snacks. I get in to drive after yelling it’s time to go, I look in my mirror as I’m driving away and see my other friends running and hopping into the car and pull off quickly to catch up….problem was the nozzle to the pump was still in the gas tank and proceeded to driveway ripping it off and it was hanging out the side…then see the gas attended come running out after them. They didn’t stop keep on driving lol

    Interesting callout about the durability. I noticed huge improvements in the longevity of the shoe compared to the Rincon 2. I went through six pairs of the Rincon 2, with 666.3 km being the most I got out of one pair. I just took my first pair of Rincon 3s to 1,008.1 km and did not notice the wear down as much as I did with the Rincon 2.

    I have a pair of Asics Kayano they have lasted several months I think going on 6 months just ordered some Nimbus because I'm going to compare stability and neutral shoes for my stride. Stability are very comfortable despite being a more neutral runner. But the Kayano are still going strong. Several months is over 1,000++ miles not 200 lol! Asics has quality. Lose weight in legs if really want to cut weight imo! Seriously though, Rincon look nice and comfy and I love the light weight but be sure to rotate them with other shoes! I may buy a pair just wont expect them to do what Asics can as far as durability.

    The foam on this shoe is significantly softer than 1/2, which had the exact same EVA. That’s why it’s breaking down/flattening faster. I got almost a thousand miles on the Rincon 1 until my foot broke through the inner lateral side of the upper 🤷‍♂️

    When my mom was teaching my sister to drive, my sis would get nervous and have little freak out moments. One day my sis is driving, Mom is in the passenger seat, I’m in the back…the car screeches to a stop, my sis threw it in park and dove over the backseat which felt and looked like one fluid movement. My mom, shocked as heck, said “lesson is done for today” and slid across the front seat and continued driving. We teased my sis about this for years always laughing so hard we would cry. Miss that girl so much.

    QD: went to college in the swiss alps. Went shopping and on the way back we noticed a burning smell, stopped the car, got out, saw the breaks were steaming from driving through the mountains. Looked through the car for some water but we had none, so we poured 2 bottles of beer on the breaks which we bought in the supermarket. It did the trick but we were sad about the wasted beer.

    Here’s a little tip or insight as too how I get around the low durability of the Rincons…..I get about 200 miles out of them before they start hurting my legs and lose their zest on my runs, then I simple rotate them in to my daily walking around/errand shoes. I’ve probably put close to 500 miles on the Rincon 1 after retiring them but they are still very comfortable for just daily walking around.🤘🏻🇺🇸

    QD: 2 stories...
    1. Boys night out on vacation in Portugal ended with us sleeping in the car until sober enough to return to the hotel. Woke up around 1PM on a very crowded beach looking directly at an inflated crocodile. Turned out we didn't fit in the car so went back to the beach and slept their. Never woke up so disoriented...
    2. Driving our rental Fiat 500 on a steep mountain in Greece. Halfway up we had to stop up one of the steepest hills because of a parked truck. The hand brake squeaked holding the car and the situation already felt quite tense. To make matters worse the 'stop&go' system turned on which basically turns off the car engine while going in a standby mode to lower emissions. Too turn on the engine I had to lower the clutch, while I was helping the handbrake with pushing the brakes too. Ended up pushing the clutch with my right foot. Eventually had to start with full gas still rolling backwards a bit.

    Hi Seth, great review, as always . I think the scoring system is functioning pretty well, and is improving as you've mentioned before. The only thing I disagree with in this particular review, is counting the durability in the score of the midsole, as durability is already a score itself. This way the shoe gets punished twice for one drawback. If you disagree, enlighten me ofc :). Keep up the good work!

  • @Bodhished
    @Bodhished 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I expect it to last longer. But regardless Rincon 2 is probably my favourite shoe I put on. That's comparing it to Clifton 7 and 8, Speed 2, rebel v2 (close but foam bottoms out after a few miles) and Rocket X.
    OK it's not as capable as the speed 2, Rocket X but has something intangible - can equality enjoy recovery, slow paces for low heart rate, steady medium runs and up tempo 5ks. Even find it easier for slow paces than clifton.

  • @bmsi5519
    @bmsi5519 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Choose the Rincon 3 for my easy pace days. Boy was I wrong. This pair is light and stable which excites you to got faster. But the energy return isn't the best especially when going fast and long. durability is questionable as only at 100km, I could see wears at the expose eva and rubber midsole. Now planning to get the Clifton or maybe a Saucony speed

    Hi Seth and viewers. My brand new Rincon 3 pair size US 10.5D is disappointingly heavier than claimed by Hoka, even considering their longer length. Right foot weighs 234g and left foot weighs 224g. I had never had such an inconsistency in a pair. Visually they are perfectly mirrored, no eye-spot difference. I've found online a few similar reviews about this issue, not on Rincon's but other Hoka models. Looks like they've been lacking some QC standards. Does anyone ever experienced it with Hoka? Seth, the Rincon 3 has been my primary shoe since November of last year. I don't do a great job of tracking the mileage for my shoes, but my estimate is about 750 miles in this shoe. Most of that's been short 5K training runs. Today I ran 13.5 miles in them and my feet took a beating. Upper is still good, but outsole has lost all that squish and hardened up. Way past time to retire these. Interesting that the price has gone up $10 for a new pair to $125. I will now pay much closer attention to mileage on shoes and retire them before they fatigue or injure me. Looking back, they probably still felt pretty good at 350 miles...
    God bless you and the growing DGR family!
    Steve

    Since 2018, I have purchased about 3 pairs of running shoes per year to replace my Adidas Supernova Glideride 8. All sorts of makes. None came close. Wasted my money. Recently I bought a pair of Rincon 3 for about $70. I have to say finally a pair that I can say is as comfortable as my 2017 version Adidas Supernova. I have glued my Adidas more than 50x because they were irreplaceable, my newer shoes were garbage until I found Rincon 3

    How soft is the midsole compared to the Mach 4's, after running in the Fuji Lite 2's? I almost find the Mach 4's a bit firm.

    • @roostermiller
      @roostermiller 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the Mach 4 and the Rincon 3, and the Rincon 3 is softer even. The two shoes are a great training partner, Mach 4 for tempo and the Rincon 3 for long runs, easy days, everyday. The Rincon 3 can handle faster paces, but the Mach 4 doesn't have as much sink in feeling. hope this helps.

    I think you'll be surprised with the Rincon durability, have had the Rincon 2 for over a year now and have done 1500+ km and have got to the point where they are being removed from the rotation now, am definately going to pick up the 3.

      I also have Rincon 2 and used 2 pairs of the original Rincon. That Rincon 3 looks way softer and more flexible than the Rincon 2. The softer midsole may not last as long

    A fair warning, if you have normal to wide feet this shoe will not work for you. I even bought the wide version and still got blisters on my pinky toes. This shoe is narrow and does not stretch in the upper at all. The rebel v2 is a better option for wider feet.

    Rincon v1 was a great shoe until about 250KM and the midsole in the mid/fore foot went flat as a pancake. Picked up the Mach4, and it's at 300KM and going strong. The ProFly/rubberized outsole in the Mach4 is amazing, for me. As a 190'ish lbs runner (86kg). As long as you don't drag your feet too much and overwork that rubberized outsole.
    I'd love to try the Rincon again, but until HOKA has proved that the shoe has can last until atleast 400KM without the midsole dieing, I'll just get another Mach4 for tempo/easy/long.
    Bring on the Rincon v3 long term reviews!
