The guitar work gets so much attention but Steve Shelly is one of my favorite rock drummers. Rock solid and so inventive, yet always playing what's best for the song and never showing off
Steve's timing I'd argue was the most consistent thing in the entire long history of the band (in his time in SY). If you watch live SY videos in like 1987 and 2010 he didn't really lose a step.
Unbelievable. Pitch perfect, after all those years too. It just amazes me how what sounds like an off-key, improv jam to a non-fan is in fact one of the most excellent and precise compositions of our times.
It's haunting. Imagine meeting a hot girl and she says she's schizo and it is taking her over, as you speak to her. It's a horrifying moment. This song is classic SY
Sonic Youth have been my favorite band since 1988, and you have it exactly right. Also through some Glenn Branca, Television and Velvet Underground into the mix.
So, so cool. That there is so much of the energy there still all these years later. It just means to me that these people were gut musicians all along.
I remember when they came to DC for a one-off show the week this LP was released. We had never heard these tunes. They opened with "Schizophrenia" - mind.officially.blown
[Thurston] I went away to see an old friend of mine His sister came over she was out of her mind She said Jesus had a twin who knew nothing about sin She was laughing like crazy at the trouble I'm in Her light eyes were dancing she is insane Her brother says she's just a bitch with a golden chain She keeps coming closer saying "I can feel it in my bones Schizophrenia is taking me home" My Future is static It's already had it I could tuck you in And we can talk about it I had a dream And it split the scene But I got a hunch It's coming back to me
I've listened to this performance so much times and could not stop, especially after I've found out the lyrics. Thanks a lot for uploading it! Love this song and the music of this band.
Jolly good. Actually it amazes me that I have never recognized this lot to be what they are before now. And now they are gone. Well. Nothing lasts forever.
Is this about Kims brother? I read the stories about him, breaks me , my best friend (my skate brother is) I wish I could just take that shit away he deserves better
chetrok1 no it's about Philip K. Dick (author of 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'.... later to become Blade Runner). Dick was born with a twin sister who died at birth, this influenced his whole life. Thurston was a real Philip K. Dick fan so he based the song loosely on him.
@@YG-qg1hs the twin who died at birth was a recurring feature of earlyish SY mythology. Elvis had Jessie Garon, and both Lydia Lunch and Nick Cave claimed at various times to be survivors of twins.

Try to check out the live take of Teenage Riot....Steve Shelly is fantastic...
Reminds me of Ringo...Just what is right for the song - nothing more or anything less
Whish he would hit those drums a bit harder.
He has some of the most precise and tight drumming I've heard. I don't even think Nirvana era Dave Grohl compares to Steve Shelley.

The guitar part right after Kim's vocals it's beautifully haunting
it is most beautiful part of the song
HARMONICS!
It really is
And the drums
It’s great but I have trouble listening to it prior to them changing Kim’s bass part, changing the harmonic solo to a minor key.
Unbelievable. Pitch perfect, after all those years too. It just amazes me how what sounds like an off-key, improv jam to a non-fan is in fact one of the most excellent and precise compositions of our times.
the first sonic youth song I ever heard and still one of my favorites.
same here :) along with tunic
Same! Along with The Diamond Sea
Schizophrenia is taking you
Same here. It was the first alongside Stereo Sanctity. Both songs blew me away and I’ve been a fan since.
It's haunting.
Imagine meeting a hot girl and she says she's schizo and it is taking her over, as you speak to her. It's a horrifying moment. This song is classic SY
This band is unreal - How they've remained relevant and urgent is enviable. High Art, this is.
Steve Shelley, you are always awesome. I don't know what those three would do without you keeping time. You're a VIP drummer in my books.
i love thurston and kim and lee singing equally, this band is and always will remain timeless, love Sonic Youth
Same here but I wish Lee sang more, I feel like he has some of the most intriguing lyrics
The guitars seem so much emotional on this performance
reading "girl in a band" while playing sonic youths entire discography! love Kim Gordon, she's a wonderful lady!!
Such a great reading! I did the same 👌👌👌
Indeed
Same here¡
Let's all start bands.
She’s all the band❤️
One of SY's songs that must have made even Television envious.
Playing drums for this song is SO fun

It's 2021 and this song gets better every year
Sonic Youth had the best TONES
Absolutely perfect performance... amazing

3:10 oh my God...like a music machinegun
This song providing me with chills 26 years after hearing it the first time
[Thurston]
I went away to see an old friend of mine
His sister came over she was out of her mind
She said Jesus had a twin who knew nothing about sin
She was laughing like crazy at the trouble I'm in
Her light eyes were dancing she is insane
Her brother says she's just a bitch with a golden chain
She keeps coming closer saying "I can feel it in my bones
Schizophrenia is taking me home"
My Future is static
It's already had it
I could tuck you in
And we can talk about it
I had a dream
And it split the scene
But I got a hunch
It's coming back to me
Tom Canpy thx
will never get over this
This is my first time hearing this song, and yes.

Jolly good. Actually it amazes me that I have never recognized this lot to be what they are before now. And now they are gone.

Sonic aun tu música vibra en el aire
Interesting that the guitars are the 'right' way round (thurston right and lee left) despite being the other way round on the stage.
Beautiful

Samari Luz somos dois kk

This band is genious. I listen to the them since late 80's. So, why they broke up??????????
Great great song
love this effect free version!

Mi banda favorita para siempre desde la ciudad de México la amo
Lee Ranaldo is one of my favorites. This Son is brilliant.

Thurston and Kim have both said the song is partially about/inspired by Kim’s brother who was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Analog>Digital>Digital
