I have read the series. At it's heart, it is actually a Dr. Manhatten redemption story, using the DC universe as a backdrop. Not sure why people didn't like it, I frankly loved it.
Most people liked it and a lot loved it like us. It’s just that there’s also a lot of people who misjudge this, unfairly compare it or pulled out by the delays.
What everyone thought: "Dr. Manhattan is gonna smack the crap out of Superman!" What we got: "Superman's ideals just bodied Dr. Manhattan's ideals!" This is the closest to an anime fight we'll ever get.
He didn't, the reasoning doesn't make sense at all with the original watchmen. Also it's fun that a being that can rebuild himself indefinitely could care about being hit.
"They can be a great people, Kal-El... they _wish_ to be. They lack only _the Light to show them the way._ For this reason above all others.... their capacity for _Good_ ... I have sent them _you._ Out last gift... my only son." That auote is over 40 years old, and yet still encapsulates the importance of Superman as inspiration. This series just showed how, in Canon and in the whole of comics, Superman *embodies* this truth!
I too am a huge Batman fan but reading Doomsday Clock made me realize just how important Superman is to the DC Universe. I had forgotten that Superman was the catalyst, the beginning of it all. Give it up to Geoff Johns for reminding us. Yes, this was awesome!
Can I just ask one question? Why does “a Batman fan” needs to realise what Superman is and why fanbases are divided in a way that a Batman fan will always ignore and refuse to accept the importance of Superman? It’s not like they both are opposite of each other, or it’s not like they are enemies. They are actually a team and work together for the same cause. And just to clear, I’m not hating on you. I just get a toxic vibe when someone supports Batman against Superman because first, it don’t make sense and second they always write nonsensical stuffs to support Batman. Don’t get me wrong tho Batman is my 3rd favourite superhero so I’m not hating.

His story has always been a motivation for me to be my best. Batman stories are always entertaining. Yes, Doomsday Clock reminded me that Superman is the inspiration for all heroes but at least I see that. I said it in the comments. As for the Batman/Superman debate, that's going to go on forever. You may as well get comfortable with that. One more thing, it's been proven that Batman is the most dangerous man in the universe. I love that.

Since the beginning, I never said anything to you, but you took it on yourself. Also, I gave an example of ZSJL, I'm very new to the whole DC superhero thing, and I don't have a comic bookstore anywhere near me, so don't sum up my whole liking based on a comment. And of course, someone who's new to a genre will seek out the most easiest way to know about the characters. I got to know about Batman and Superman when I was a child, but I never paid a single attention to any superhero. I knew about them but not in deep detail, and what I've witnessed since the rise of my eagerness to know about DC, I've encountered only toxic Batman fans who ignore other superheroes importance, *("NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU, BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU FEEL ABOUT OTHER CHARACTERS, DON'T TAKE IT ON YOURSELF")*. And if you've been collecting it for 40+ years, then you are clearly older than me, so don't argue with me like a fankid. I thought I was trying to ask a genuine question with a genuine fan. I've always thought that if Superman isn't relatable to your society, then he's more necessary than ever. Batman will always be relatable. We will always struggle with darkness. But a relatable Superman requires a society that doesn't focus on the darkness that holds them back, but instead celebrates the hope of being better than we think possible. DC should've never apologized for the bright blue tights, the underwear on the outside, or the outdated message of inspiration. Instead, they should never forget it, and always hope to earn his relevance with their audience.
I remember not liking Superman when I was really young. "He's too powerful, nothing is challenging for him" etcetera etcetera. Then I watched the Justice League animated series and saw Superman fight Darkseid. Superman is getting his ass handed to him by Darkseid and then Supes catches a punch, I feel like I live in a world made of Cardboard, but You big guy, you can take me at my best. (paraphrasing) Then he punches Darkseid and launches him through 6 or 9 building and proceeds to whoop Darkseid up right and center. That was the moment Superman earned my respect.
@@bludragon34 the Fact that Supes gets bested by Batman's Superpower, Proprietary Technology, albeit Darkseid's, made me laugh, but The World Made of Cardboard Speech is still my favorite Superman Moment.

It talked about the end of all worlds and showed what was pretty clearly superman, batman, green lantern and flash as streaks of their iconic colors rushing/ flying through a city to face this threat. And then that world also falls. To the black snow or whatever it's called. And thor and galactus are preparing for this ender of everything by pumping galactus up with what will probably be his greatest power boost so far. Apparently there are like 5 planets that had been hidden from him by the surfer, that if galactus were to consume would make him exponentially more powerful. Also this ties back around to Galactus' origin story. Apparently this same black snow thing is what ended his universe, way back before the marvel universe was a thing. Or something like that. Pretty cool. Sometimes these comics get so meta that it freaks me out. Like I start questioning my/our place in all of this as the reader. Just for fun. But also just imagine the interconnectivity of it all. If I start seeing black snow falling in places due to global warming or some shit I'm fucking done!
It doesn't "show" how powerful he is... It just writes him as that powerful. These characters aren't real, they're exactly as powerful as the most recent writer wants them to be. All of them. I don't know why people waste so much time debating who's more powerful than who. If I got a writing job at the comic company tomorrow and was put in charge of one of these series, I could write a story that says Jesus came back, and was more powerful that all the rest of them combined, and then the very next week I could write a story that Bozo the Clown got hit by a magic comet and became 1000 times more powerful than God himself. Bozo honked his nose once and every superhero ever in every universe in the multiverse disintegrates instantly, on the quantum level and can't be resurrected... It doesn't matter. Any power level of any character is totally dependent on writing an can be changed on a whim.
This was such a meta story. They not only explained the New 52, but also every revamp DC ever did and will do. I loved it. Supes is my favorite character for a reason, and that reason was captured perfectly here. His strength and abilities are off the chart, but they're still dwarfed by his empathy and morality.
I'm a Marvel fan and this just blew my mind. Superman is one character I've always held in high regard. I can see a DC/Marvel crossover happening sooner than you think.
Hey Fanboys, what if it’s a well rounded, pretty evenly matched fight? There’s always a chance both can win. Barely any fight is 100-0. I give Superman 60/40 odds over Thor, but If Thor hits hard with the hammer early, he’s in business. Location is also a factor. If they’re on Asgard, I give Thor a 50/50 chance of winning, but if they’re in space near a yellow star, Superman has 75/25. Anyone can beat anyone, I give Flash 22/88 with Superman, and Shazam 40/60. If Batman can do it, anyone can- the question is will they this time? Edit: essentially, no one needs to be destroyed. It can be a quick, match winning decision.
The miniseries took a while to get to the point, but damn, when they finally reached it, IT WAS PHENOMENAL! Didn't think they could but in one issue they explain the whole story around the New 52, connecting it with Rebirth is such a great way, validating the past and looking to the future in an EPIC fashion. PLUS they managed to tie EVERYTHING to Watchmen, which may not be the definitive ending for that story as Alan Moore would envision, but certainly gave an interpretation of life after Watchmen that encompasses what DC is all about. Honestly, this last issue was masterful. Can't wait for Three Jokers now!

I remember a scene in Infinite Crisis when Alexander Luthor discovered something about the metaverse and admitted he'd probably never know why, but he said that it all began with Superman. It was meta-commentary on the fact that the the superhero genre began with Superman. Doomsday Clock continued that, and again showed Superman as the gold standard in heroes.
That’s why Superman’s the best, he’s the most important character in DC. I’m so happy my uncle gave me my first comic, it introduced me to such awe, wonder, and imagination.
As a 62 year old fan I have to say I loved this issue& series because it made everything I`ve read since 1963 legitimate. Every iteration of these characters existed and mattered. We were just reading adventures in different timelines. Even at this late date I`m looking forward to that Marvel/ DC crossover Geoff has promised us. Geoff set out to correct the New 52 but ended up giving us one of the best series of the 2010`s.

That one line from Jay Garrick brought me to tears. I can feel the emotional connection between all these characters and the authors who’ve lovingly passed the torch to younger generations.
Honestly I have no emotional attachment to any of the character in the Marvel/DC/whatever universe, but I started reading comics looking for good stories, and I have to say that Doomsday Clock provided that in a way I never imagined. I now admire Geoff Johns.

For those who think when DC talks about Thor they talking about their own version of Thor, which could be true, HOWEVER I draw your attention to the fact the event will be called "Secret Crisis", a homage to how Marvel big events are called "Secret Wars" and DC's are also Crisis events. This term has always been used by fans in the past to describe a crossover between the two companies. Again, still not explicit, and more like hopeful thinking from Johns, but still cool nevertheless.

@@godbearxd no, it depends on how much of it is magic. Thor's hammer is magical to an extent. But even super strong beings have deflect and handled it. Superman is no exception, and would honestly be strong to easily break the spell... besides that, Superman is probably more worthy than Thor to wield it. And magic is not a "weakness" to Superman. He's just vulnerable to it like EVERYONE else. In fact, he has taken on magical beings powerful enough to wipe a planet out of existence...and he tanked the magical energy at that level.

Jon raises a kid named Clark who would be the savior of the world, he would be raised with love and compassion, he would be raised with hope and would carry on these ideals while fighting to save his world.
Superman represents the hope of a better tomorrow. Putting it against Dr. Manhattan is useless unless it is a battle of ideals. The hope against the ideal emptiness of a "god" hoping to find a motive in his life, is what I see in that combat.
well said, I don't read comics, but i have been following this story. It is such a eastern style aka anime/manga thing. Battle of ideals. But done in a very western style. Most of the time i see them brawling it out until one of the sides has a realization. This was pretty well done.

Loved this series from 1-12. This was never gonna be an actual "fight" from Dr. Manhattan and Superman. And if you believed that, not only did you fool yourself but may not know much about comics nor do you know about Superman. If you read Watchmen that was a series that barely threw a punch where DC mirrored that to some degree. This was a book telling us what happens when the most powerful man in the universe goes up against the most powerful alien in the universe. They talk it out. This was a Superman love letter from Geoff John's and why Superman is very RELATABLE and will always be DC golden child. A 9/10 score from me and the only reason why I'm taking a point away is because of the bullshit delays that really did hurt this event.
Never been at tears from a comic. Superman is inevitable. The very fact the S showed up from the blue smoke. Every alternate Universe superman is Hope. Before this video, I thought Dr. Manhattan was way beyond Superman. After this video, I realize that Superman in the DC multiverse, is way beyond Dr. Manhattan.
Dr Manhattan feels like this detached but extremely intoxicated guy appreciating and having deep insights on a work of art on LSD. But that particular work of art is absolutely everything everywhere at once at the same time. Just like a guy looking at an artwork on acid. He knows he's not in any real danger. But his mind is constantly making connections and trying to perceive things in the big picture. His brain is hyperconnected(like on acid) to not just a metahuman but a meta existence point of view. At the same time he's not above meta existence. He didn't create all of reality and is still searching and experiencing existence in the context of it. He's still a human subject within this context. Just with a massively privileged view far above everything existing within it. When everyone else is living their life. He's like a detached art critic trying to make sense of it all and find meaning in an extremely violent and disturbing piece of art. He's an overpowered character done the right way. He's really just beyond and above everything. But his perspective is still weirdly human. It's just that he's completely detached from all animal like emotional attachment. And has to justify any attachment and emotion he has from this metacosmic and intersubjective perspective. He's like the ultimate philosophical stoic in a sense.

I have to say I absolutely love this ending. Like the entire time we the reader along with Doctor Manhattan keep expecting the epic death battle between them. Only it never happens despite Manhattan telling superman every change he has caused, superman still defends him because its the right thing to do. After everything in watchmen and manhattans god like powers made him lose faith in humanity and watched his world tear itself apart he sees the same thing happening only Superman is still fighting for hope and a better future. Its just a beautiful ending that Superman the symbol of hope inspires docotr Manhattan and restores his faith in the world. Its just such a wonderful understanding of what superman is. He's just a kind hearted man trying to make the world a better place one day at a time. I have to say this might be one of the best Superman stories in my opinion.

I have read the series. At it's heart, it is actually a Dr. Manhatten redemption story, using the DC universe as a backdrop. Not sure why people didn't like it, I frankly loved it.

Why does “a Batman fan” needs to realise what Superman is and why fanbases are divided in a way that a Batman fan will always ignore and refuse to accept the importance of Superman? I've always thought that if Superman isn't relatable to your society, then he's more necessary than ever.
Batman will always be relatable. We will always struggle with darkness. But a relatable Superman requires a society that doesn't focus on the darkness that holds them back, but instead celebrates the hope of being better than we think possible.
DC should've never apologized for the bright blue tights, the underwear on the outside, or the outdated message of inspiration. Instead, they should never forget it, and always hope to earn his relevance with their audience.

I remember not liking Superman when I was really young. "He's too powerful, nothing is challenging for him" etcetera etcetera. Then I watched the Justice League animated series and saw Superman fight Darkseid. Superman is getting his ass handed to him by Darkseid and then Supes catches a punch, I feel like I live in a world made of Cardboard, but You big guy, you can take me at my best. (paraphrasing) Then he punches Darkseid and launches him through 6 or 9 building and proceeds to whoop Darkseid up right and center. That was the moment Superman earned my respect.
Then darkseid immediately gets up and hits Superman with an app. Moments before killing him luthor saves the day

It talked about the end of all worlds and showed what was pretty clearly superman, batman, green lantern and flash as streaks of their iconic colors rushing/ flying through a city to face this threat. And then that world also falls. To the black snow or whatever it's called. And thor and galactus are preparing for this ender of everything by pumping galactus up with what will probably be his greatest power boost so far. Apparently there are like 5 planets that had been hidden from him by the surfer, that if galactus were to consume would make him exponentially more powerful. Also this ties back around to Galactus' origin story. Apparently this same black snow thing is what ended his universe, way back before the marvel universe was a thing. Or something like that. Pretty cool. Sometimes these comics get so meta that it freaks me out. Like I start questioning my/our place in all of this as the reader. Just for fun. But also just imagine the interconnectivity of it all.

It doesn't "show" how powerful he is... It just writes him as that powerful. These characters aren't real, they're exactly as powerful as the most recent writer wants them to be. All of them. I don't know why people waste so much time debating who's more powerful than who. If I got a writing job at the comic company tomorrow and was put in charge of one of these series, I could write a story that says Jesus came back, and was more powerful that all the rest of them combined, and then the very next week I could write a story that Bozo the Clown got hit by a magic comet and became 1000 times more powerful than God himself. Bozo honked his nose once and every superhero ever in every universe in the multiverse disintegrates instantly, on the quantum level and can't be resurrected... It doesn't matter. Any power level of any character is totally dependent on writing an can be changed on a whim.

This was such a meta story. They not only explained the New 52, but also every revamp DC ever did and will do. I loved it. Supes is my favorite character for a reason, and that reason was captured perfectly here. His strength and abilities are off the chart, but they're still dwarfed by his empathy and morality.
I'm a Marvel fan and this just blew my mind. Superman is one character I've always held in high regard. I can see a DC/Marvel crossover happening sooner than you think.

Hey Fanboys, what if it’s a well rounded, pretty evenly matched fight? There’s always a chance both can win. Barely any fight is 100-0. I give Superman 60/40 odds over Thor, but If Thor hits hard with the hammer early, he’s in business. Location is also a factor. If they’re on Asgard, I give Thor a 50/50 chance of winning, but if they’re in space near a yellow star, Superman has 75/25. Anyone can beat anyone, I give Flash 22/88 with Superman, and Shazam 40/60. If Batman can do it, anyone can- the question is will they this time?
Edit: essentially, no one needs to be destroyed. It can be a quick, match winning decision.

The miniseries took a while to get to the point, but damn, when they finally reached it, IT WAS PHENOMENAL! Didn't think they could but in one issue they explain the whole story around the New 52, connecting it with Rebirth is such a great way, validating the past and looking to the future in an EPIC fashion. PLUS they managed to tie EVERYTHING to Watchmen, which may not be the definitive ending for that story as Alan Moore would envision, but certainly gave an interpretation of life after Watchmen that encompasses what DC is all about. Honestly, this last issue was masterful. Can't wait for Three Jokers now!

I remember a scene in Infinite Crisis when Alexander Luthor discovered something about the metaverse and admitted he'd probably never know why, but he said that it all began with Superman. It was meta-commentary on the fact that the the superhero genre began with Superman. Doomsday Clock continued that, and again showed Superman as the gold standard in heroes.

As a 62 year old fan I have to say I loved this issue& series because it made everything I`ve read since 1963 legitimate. Every iteration of these characters existed and mattered. We were just reading adventures in different timelines. Even at this late date I`m looking forward to that Marvel/ DC crossover Geoff has promised us. Geoff set out to correct the New 52 but ended up giving us one of the best series of the 2010`s.

That one line from Jay Garrick brought me to tears. I can feel the emotional connection between all these characters and the authors who’ve lovingly passed the torch to younger generations.
Honestly I have no emotional attachment to any of the character in the Marvel/DC/whatever universe, but I started reading comics looking for good stories, and I have to say that Doomsday Clock provided that in a way I never imagined. I now admire Geoff Johns.

For those who think when DC talks about Thor they talking about their own version of Thor, which could be true, HOWEVER I draw your attention to the fact the event will be called "Secret Crisis", a homage to how Marvel big events are called "Secret Wars" and DC's are also Crisis events. This term has always been used by fans in the past to describe a crossover between the two companies. Again, still not explicit, and more like hopeful thinking from Johns, but still cool nevertheless.

Superman is no exception, and would honestly be strong to easily break the spell... besides that, Superman is probably more worthy than Thor to wield it. And magic is not a "weakness" to Superman. He's just vulnerable to it like EVERYONE else. In fact, he has taken on magical beings powerful enough to wipe a planet out of existence...and he tanked the magical energy at that level.

It's inspiring that Superman would be the one that inspires Dr. Manhattan with hope. Dr. Manhattan's greatest weakness was always his fear of losing his humanity, and it was Superman that saved him.
My favourite page was showing the link between the atomic symbol on Manhattan’s forehead and Superman. Superman is the Nucleus. The Metaverse that all other versions grow from. Even Dr.Manhattan himself is in orbit around Superman.
The Dr Manhattan character can not have been created in the ‘80s without Superman coming first.

Jon raises a kid named Clark who would be the savior of the world, he would be raised with love and compassion, he would be raised with hope and would carry on these ideals while fighting to save his world.
Superman represents the hope of a better tomorrow. Putting it against Dr. Manhattan is useless unless it is a battle of ideals. The hope against the ideal emptiness of a "god" hoping to find a motive in his life, is what I see in that combat.

well said, I don't read comics, but i have been following this story. It is such a eastern style aka anime/manga thing. Battle of ideals. But done in a very western style. Most of the time i see them brawling it out until one of the sides has a realization. This was pretty well done.
This series was a waaaaay better follow up to Watchmen than the HBO Series.

Loved this series from 1-12. This was never gonna be an actual "fight" from Dr. Manhattan and Superman. And if you believed that, not only did you fool yourself but may not know much about comics nor do you know about Superman. If you read Watchmen that was a series that barely threw a punch where DC mirrored that to some degree. This was a book telling us what happens when the most powerful man in the universe goes up against the most powerful alien in the universe. They talk it out.
This was a Superman love letter from Geoff John's and why Superman is very RELATABLE and will always be DC golden child.
A 9/10 score from me and the only reason why I'm taking a point away is because of the bullshit delays that really did hurt this event.

Dr Manhattan feels like this detached but extremely intoxicated guy appreciating and having deep insights on a work of art on LSD. But that particular work of art is absolutely everything everywhere at once at the same time. Just like a guy looking at an artwork on acid. He knows he's not in any real danger. But his mind is constantly making connections and trying to perceive things in the big picture. His brain is hyperconnected(like on acid) to not just a metahuman but a meta existence point of view. At the same time he's not above meta existence. He didn't create all of reality and is still searching and experiencing existence in the context of it. He's still a human subject within this context. Just with a massively privileged view far above everything existing within it. When everyone else is living their life. He's like a detached art critic trying to make sense of it all and find meaning in an extremely violent and disturbing piece of art. He's an overpowered character done the right way. He's really just beyond and above everything. But his perspective is still weirdly human. It's just that he's completely detached from all animal like emotional attachment. And has to justify any attachment and emotion he has from this metacosmic and intersubjective perspective. He's like the ultimate philosophical stoic in a sense.

I have to say I absolutely love this ending. Like the entire time we the reader along with Doctor Manhattan keep expecting the epic death battle between them. Only it never happens despite Manhattan telling superman every change he has caused, superman still defends him because its the right thing to do. After everything in watchmen and manhattans god like powers made him lose faith in humanity and watched his world tear itself apart he sees the same thing happening only Superman is still fighting for hope and a better future. Its just a beautiful ending that Superman the symbol of hope inspires docotr Manhattan and restores his faith in the world. Its just such a wonderful understanding of what superman is. He's just a kind hearted man trying to make the world a better place one day at a time.
